The capture of the radionuclides strontium and cesium is of great importance to the environment, human health, and the sustainable development of nuclear energy, and zirconium phosphate with excellent ion exchange capacity has potential application in this field. In this work, we organically granulated zirconium phosphate to induce the formation of composite bead materials (CA@ZrP) with a calcium-containing phase with selectivity for Sr2+ and Cs+ higher than that of pure ZrP in low-pH environments and competing ionic environments. The adsorption performance of the material was systematically investigated. It was concluded that the adsorption performance of CA@ZrP improved with an increase in temperature, and under the dynamic adsorption experimental conditions, the treatment capacity of CA@ZrP for Sr2+ and Cs+ reached 404.79 and 302.2 bed volumes, respectively. The systematic study and characterization showed that the generation of the calcium-containing phase [Ca0.55ZrH0.9(PO4)2] promoted the exchange of Ca2+ with Sr2+ and Cs+, thus improving the selectivity of the composite beads. The highly selective composite bead material can be prepared in batches and easily recycled, providing a new idea for practical engineering applications.

Phase change materials (PCM) have emerged as an effective thermal management solution for addressing the heat dissipation challenges in electronic devices, particularly those with high heat flux and prolonged thermal shock duration. However, their commercial application has been hindered by issues such as low thermal conductivity, leakage, and assembly challenges. This paper introduces composite PCM (CPCM) that offer excellent thermal conductivity, flexibility, and stable shape, developed through a process of physical mixing and thermo-compression formation, and evaluates their performance in chip heat dissipation experiments. An olefin block copolymer (OBC) is used as a supporting material to encapsulate 1-hexadecanol (HD), effectively preventing melt leakage while providing thermal flexibility. Graphite is added to create interconnected heat transfer channels within the CPCM. The CPCM with 7.5 wt% expanded graphite (EG) and an HD/OBC mass ratio of 12:8 demonstrates optimal performance, achieving a thermal conductivity of 0.537 W∙m −1 ∙K −1 , a phase transition enthalpy of 152J∙g −1 , and a leakage rate of only 0.846 % after 200 thermal cycles. In simulated electronic chip heat dissipation experiments, the CPCM effectively stores and dissipates heat, maintaining the electronic device within a stable and reasonable operating temperature range, thereby proving its effectiveness in the thermal management of electronic devices. The composite is easy to process, exhibits excellent performance, and holds significant potential for widespread application in the temperature control of electronic devices.

Phase change materials are used in cementitious materials to reduce the hydration temperature rise and thus inhibit the temperature cracks generation. However, the influence mechanism of phase change materials on the hydration properties of cementitious materials is still unclear. In this study, ZIF-8-based composite phase change materials (CPCM) were added to the Portland cement (PC) clinker-anhydrite (C$)-calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement ternary system (PCCSA) in the form of admixtures. The effects of controlling the phase change temperatures, dosages of CPCM and hydration temperatures on the hydration exothermic characteristics, hydration products and the compressive strength development in the PCCSA composite system were investigated. CPCM addition reduced the hydration exothermic rate and cumulative heat release of the ternary system, especially when the phase change temperature of CPCM was 25.8 ℃, and the larger the dosage, the more obvious the reduction effect. In addition, CPCM did not participate in the hydration reaction of the system, but promoted the formation of CH and AFm. Simultaneously, the compressive strength of the PCCSA system paste containing CPCM decreased due to increased porosity in the paste. Furthermore, elevated hydration temperature significantly improved the hydration rate of the system, while reduced the hydration degree, and the hydration products types of the system were not affected by the hydration temperatures. This study results are fundamental for predicting the hydration behavior of cement systems containing CPCM and promoting the application of composite phase change materials in cementitious materials.

Lauric acid (LA) shows much potential as one organic phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage, owing to its suitable melting point, relatively high thermal/chemical stability and latent heat. However, the LA-based thermal storage method invariably suffers from the big challenges of liquid leakage tendency and low thermal conductivity of single lauric acid, limiting immensely its practicality. Herein, one encapsulation and modifying strategy to fabricate high conductive and low liquid leakage composite phase change materials (CPCMs) for photo-thermal storage was proposed by constructing novel graphene doped LA/g-C 3 N 4 CPCM. Firstly, LA is infiltrated into a novel two-dimensional porous matrix – the graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) to prevent liquid leakage in the solid–liquid phase change process. Then it is further incorporated with a certain amount of graphite nanoplatelets to further enhance thermal conductivity. The encapsulation and modifying strategy enable the graphene doped LA/g-C 3 N 4 to show excellent thermal storage performance for both heat and light energy, low liquid leakage, and high thermal stability. The hybrid LA/g-C 3 N 4 with 5 wt% graphene (CPCM3) modification has a melting temperature of 45.88 °C and enthalpy of 159.19 J/g. The corresponding solidification temperature and enthalpy are 43.36 °C and 144.40 J/g, respectively. Its thermal conductivity at 50 °C is enhanced to 0.9338 W/(m·K) (one time higher than single LA), also superior to the state-of-the-art LA-based CPCMs. After 100 thermal cycles, the composite phase change material only suffers low mass loss and latent heat loss of phase change, which proves the good thermal reliability. Furthermore, TGA and DTG data indicate that CPCM3 can maintain good thermal stability in the normal operating temperature range. In the whole, the joint effect of the porous g-C 3 N 4 matrix and graphene modification improve the thermal storage performance of LA through the improvement of liquid immobilization and thermal conductivity. This work provides a promising strategy for fabricating high conductive and low liquid-leakage CPCM toward enhanced photo-thermal storage.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), a new kind of metal–organic framework, has large surface area as well as outstanding thermal and chemical stability. In this paper, micro-sized ZIF-67 crystals were prepared and further employed as the reinforcing material to design novel paraffin-based composite phase change materials (PCMs) with a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) shell. The composite PCMs were fabricated by using a ZIF-67 crystal-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion as a template. Morphologies and thermal properties of the prepared composite PCMs with different contents of ZIF-67 crystals were determined by SEM, DSC and TGA. Results showed that the ZIF-67 concentration in the emulsion system has a significant effect on the microstructure, phase change behavior and thermal stability of the resultant composite PCMs. When adding 1.5 g of ZIF-67 crystals, the resultant composite PCMs achieved a stable sphere-like structure and had about 106.06 J g−1 of latent heat. The prepared composite PCMs also exhibited a good thermal stability. Compared with pure paraffin, the thermostability of the shape-stabilized paraffin was significantly enhanced at a low content of ZIF-67 crystals.

Paraffin based composite phase change materials (PCMs) have gained intensive attentions in low temperature thermal energy storage (TES) and management application domains because of its suitable melting temperature range and advanced thermoproperties. Seeking decent structural supporting materials (SSM) and the associated manufacturing approaches that capable of fabricating paraffin composites at appropriate temperatures to avert the thermal decomposition of the paraffin particularly for low-molecule ones are in high demand. Herein, we developed a low-molecule paraffin (RT18HC) composite through a simple blending approach by using styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) as SSM, and showed that such SEBS-paraffin composites could be able to fabricate at a low operation temperature of 80 °C, significantly lower than that required for the preparation of conventional high density polyethylene (HDPE)-paraffin composites. To enhance the composite effective thermal conductivity , a micro-sized graphite power as enhancer was also involved over the fabrication process. Owing to the desirable solubility of paraffin in SEBS, a crosslinking structure inlaying paraffin and graphite was formed, endowing the composite with ability to maintain the structure stabilization and eliminate the graphite sedimentation over the repeated thermal cycles. 10 wt% of SEBS gives the composite optimum formulation at which 10 wt% graphite can be involved, and also an excellent shape stability and thermal adjustment ability can be achieved.

In this study, octadecylamine/graphite foam composite phase change materials (ODA/GF CPCMs) were prepared by vacuum impregnation; octadecylamine (ODA) was used as the phase change materials (PCMs), and graphite foam (GF) was used as the support material. Polyurethane (PU) foam obtained after hydrolysis in 40 wt% NaOH solution at 80 °C for 30 min was the template for the GF; therefore, the prepared GF has many interpenetrating pore structures, providing many adsorption sites for PCMs. For the ODA/GF-3 CPCMs with 15 wt% graphite addition, the loading of ODA is as high as 92.3%, the thermal stability is excellent, the melting temperature is 52.1 °C, and the latent heat of fusion is 218. 1 J/g, which is 1.1 times that of pure ODA. The thermal conductivity of ODA/GF-3 CPCMs is 0.725 W/m•K, which is 2.2 times that of pure ODA. These results indicate that ODA/GF CPCMs have good thermal properties, and their competitiveness in the field of energy storage is greatly improved due to their excellent performance.

Designing and synthesizing the excellent heat storage and photothermal integrated composite phase change materials (PCMs) is an effective strategy for solar energy utilization. This work focuses on two kinds of CuS (cuboidal and 3D flower-shaped) with different morphology were designed as substrates and photothermal materials, and PA/F–CuS and PA/C–CuS composite PCMs have been prepared by melt-blending and vacuum impregnation method. Through SEM and pore structure characterization as well as leakage testing, it is proved that 3D layered flower-shaped CuS not only exposes the large specific surface area and rich adsorption sites, but also 2D thin layers can perform multiple reflections to improve the utilization rate of solar energy. The flower-shaped CuS is more suitable for the supporting material. Noteworthy, the latent heat of PA/F–CuS can reach 226.3 J/g, and the thermal conductivity is 0.3447 W/(m·K). Furthermore, compared with pure PA, the photothermal property of PA/F–CuS increased by 49.22–84.59%, and the photothermal conversion efficiency can reach 70.3%. This work provides an innovative idea for the design and manufacture of composite PCMs related to medium and low temperature solar energy storage, and has broad application potential in the field of thermal energy storage such as solar energy utilization and building insulation materials.

High-entropy rare-earth niobates have garnered significant attention in the field of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) due to their ultra-low thermal conductivity. However, the exceptional thermal properties of fluorite-phase high-entropy rare-earth niobates and the outstanding mechanical properties of monoclinic-phase high-entropy rare-earth niobates cannot be simultaneously harnessed. To address this limitation, this paper investigates and synthesizes five single-phase high-entropy rare-earth niobates: (RE 1/5 Ho 1/5 Er 1/5 Y 1/5 Yb 1/5 ) 3 NbO 7 (RE = Ce, Sm, Eu, Dy, Lu), and five composite-phase high-entropy rare-earth niobates with a molar ratio of (RE 1/5 Ho 1/5 Er 1/5 Y 1/5 Yb 1/5 )NbO 7 : (RE 1/5 Ho 1/5 Er 1/5 Y 1/5 Yb 1/5 )NbO 4 = 1:2 (RE = Ce, Sm, Eu, Dy, Lu). The objective is to fabricate niobate coatings that exhibit both outstanding thermal and mechanical properties. The test results reveal that the intrinsic thermal conductivity of the composite-phase samples stands at a mere 1.46 W m −1 ·K −1 at 1000 °C. Comparatively, the experimental thermal conductivity of the single-phase samples slightly surpasses that of the composite-phase at 1000 °C, registering a minimum of 1.57 W m −1 ·K −1 . Importantly, both values adhere to the TBC standard. The mechanisms behind the low thermal conductivity of the composite-phase and single-phase samples are elucidated by the phonon scattering mechanism and the Cahill model, respectively. Furthermore, the thermal expansion coefficient of the composite-phase samples exceeds that of the single-phase samples overall, and they demonstrate exceptional mechanical properties, offering nearly twice the fracture toughness of the single-phase samples while maintaining high hardness. Experimental evidence shows that composite-phase niobates exhibit enhanced thermodynamic properties compared to single-phase niobates. This work serves as a valuable reference for the utilization of high-entropy rare-earth niobates in the realm of thermal barrier coatings.

Microscale graphite (Gr) and nanoscale multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were chosen to modify the organic phase change material (PCM) of myristic acid (MA). The Gr/MA and MWCNTs/MA composite PCMs were prepared by adding the carbon materials at different mass fractions into MA. The experimental results indicated that both Gr and MWCNTs could enhance the thermal conductivity of MA. For the 3 wt% loading, the solid thermal conductivity of MA increased by 37.42% with Gr and 62.26% with MWCNTs. The FT-IR spectra showed that the reactions between carbon materials and MA were physical. The DSC results illustrated that the phase change latent heats of the composite PCMs decreased gradually with the additives increasing. Gr and MWCNTs strengthened the thermal stability of MA. The heat release rates of the composite PCMs accelerated. Three hundred thermal cycles of the chosen composite PCMs revealed that the prepared composite PCMs presented good thermal cycling stability.

Summary In this work, stearic acid/carbon nanotubes composite phase change materials (SA/CNTs composite PCMs) were fabricated by ball milling for the first time to enhance the heat conduction of SA and prevent the delamination of SA and CNTs components. The results of suspension stability study conducted using a gravity sedimentation method showed that polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) used as dispersant has the best effect on the stability of composite PCMs. Then, the thermal cycling test further proved the stability of prepared composite. The SEM and FT-IR results revealed that ball milling led to the formation of highly homogeneous composites. The thermal properties of the fabricated SA/CNTs composites with CNTs contents of 2, 6, and 10 wt.% characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that their phase change temperatures varied slightly while the latent heat decreased with the increased CNTs content. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity of the SA/CNTs composites were greater than that of pure SA by 61.5%, 92.3%, and 119.2%, respectively. The addition of CNTs also increased the thermal release rates of the prepared PCMs and decreased their storage rates. Therefore, the produced materials can be potentially used in thermal management.

A self-assembly method is introduced to prepare composite phase change materials (PCMs) consisting of 1-octadecanol (OD) and graphene. The shape stability and thermal properties of 1-octadecanol/graphene composite PCMs with three-dimensional network structure are investigated. Graphene is dispersed evenly in OD matrix and the three-dimensional network structure is getting tighter with increasing ratio of graphene. OD is completely encapsulated at relatively low amount of graphene about 1.5 wt%. XRD and Raman results show that the combination between OD and graphene is physical adsorption. The 1-octadecanol/graphene (OG) composite phase change materials possess excellent shape stability, which can prevent the leakage of molten OD during phase transition. In addition, around 99.3% phase change enthalpy of pure OD is maintained by connected network structure of graphene while the melting and solidifying temperature merely have small fluctuations. The thermal conductivity of composite phase change material with 1.5 wt% graphene increases to 0.358 W/(m K), which is 1.5 times higher than that of pure OD. Furthermore, the porous network of graphene can delay the evaporation and thermal decomposition point of the composite phase change materials, thus extending the operating temperature of OD efficiently. This work provides a promising way to encapsulate low-temperature organic phase change materials with little carbon additives, and enhance the thermophysical properties of base materials simultaneously.
