In this study, we screened out the dominant spoilage microorganisms during the cold storage of morels, prepared composite paper with a targeted selection of antimicrobial active substances, applied the composite paper to morels for cold storage and preservation, and investigated the changes of physicochemical indexes, flavor-presenting nucleotides and enzyme activities throughout the process of storage, and evaluated the freshness preservation effect. The pathogenic microorganisms during the natural spoilage of Morels were isolated and purified at 4 °C. The dominant spoilage microorganisms obtained were: bacterium B1 ( Lelliia amnigena ), fungi F2 ( Paecilomyces penicillatus ) and F3 ( Mucor hiemalis ). Inhibition experiments were carried out by selecting various active antimicrobial agents—lemon essential oil, clove essential oil and nisin (NI)—against the dominant spoilage microorganisms B1, F2 and F3. Comparing the inhibitory effects, NI was selected as an inhibitor for the dominant spoilage microorganisms following comprehensive consideration. The antimicrobial system (NI/C-CNC) was prepared by incorporating NI into carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (C-CNC), and it exhibited a strong blocking effect on ultraviolet rays, which became more pronounced with the increase of NI addition. The composite paper NI-C was prepared using the NI/C-CNC antimicrobial system and absorbent paper (100 % virgin wood pulp), which showed better mechanical properties and reduced water vapor transmission rate (WVP). NI-C composite paper was applied to the preservation of morels, which effectively inhibited the dominant pathogenic bacteria. The flavor 5′-nucleotides were effectively protected, and it significantly slowed down the change in hardness during storage of morels. It also inhibited lipid peroxidation, as evidenced by the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MAD) content and reactive oxygen species (ROS), and had a positive effect on the control of enzyme activity. NI-C antimicrobial composite paper has good application prospects in the field of packaging of morels.

Petroleum-based plastics are useful, but they pose a huge threat to the environment and human health. The development of sustainable cellulose paper materials with excellent mechanical and water-resistance properties to replace plastics is highly desirable but also challenging. Herein, we report a new kind of rosin-based modifier synthesized from fully hydrogenated rosin and (3-glycidoxypropyl)triethoxysilane, which can covalently bind with cellulose fiber networks to improve the hydrophobicity and weaken the capillarity of cellulose paper. The rosin-grafted cellulose composite paper shows a unique combination of water resistance (water absorption of 19.2% and 37.9% in 25 and 90 °C water, respectively) and high strength (tensile strength of 47.9 MPa and Young's modulus of 2.32 GPa). Moreover, the rosin-grafted cellulose composite paper can be completely degraded when buried in soil for up to 100 days, and it can be recycled when treated with an alkali. These impressive performances make rosin-grafted cellulose composite paper a promising eco-friendly alternative material to replace plastics in straws, boxes, cups, bags and so on.

Herein, the asymmetric and multilayered structure Ag-MXene/ANFs composite papers (AMAGM) were fabricated based on Ag-MXene hybrids and aramid nanofibers (ANFs) via a self-reduction and alternating vacuum-assisted filtration process. The resultant AMAGM composite papers exhibit high electrical conductivity of 248,120 S m−1, excellent mechanical properties with tensile strength of 124.21 MPa and fracture strain of 4.98%, superior EMI shielding effectiveness (62 dB), ultra-high EMI SE/t (11,923 dB cm2g−1) and outstanding EMI SE reliability as high as 96.1% even after 5000 cycles of bending deformation benefiting from the unique structure and the 3D network at a thickness of 34 μm. Asymmetric structures play an important role in regulating reflection and absorption of electromagnetic waves. In addition, the multifunctional nanocomposite papers reveal outstanding thermal management performances such as ultrafast thermal response, high heating temperatures at low operation voltage, and high heating stability. Encouraged by the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emission by 2050, the exploration of insulating material becomes one of the core projects to the electrical equipment innovations. The rise of composites enables the insulating material to be endowed with more functions. By this concern, adopting the coupling agents is one of the effective methods to improve the compatibility of composites, which highly strengthens the desired properties. The functional groups of coupling agents, nevertheless, could not always show a positive impact to access enhanced properties. In this work, four types of silane coupling agents including amino-propyl, glycidyletheroxy-propyl (GP), vinyl, and methacryloxy-propyl functional groups are employed to modify the aluminum nitride (AlN) fillers, and the modification effects on the insulating and thermal conductivity of the AlN/poly(m-phenylenedicarbonyl-m-phenylenediamine) (PMIA) composite paper are systematically investigated and compared. The results show that a proper coupling agent is beneficial to the uniform dispersion of the inorganic filler in the organic matrix and highly contributes to their interface quality, where the heat transfer path is established that boosts the heat dissipation. By tailoring the trap depth and density toward deeper and higher, the carrier transport is highly confined which enhances the breakdown strength to a large extent. Therefore, high breakdown strength and thermal conductivity of 182.9 kV mm−1 and 0.302 W (m·K)−1, respectively, are achieved in the GP modified AlN/PMIA paper, which are 16.7% and 167.4% higher than that of pure PMIA paper.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used for sterilization due to their broad-spectrum bactericidal properties. However, there exist the problems of premature releasing and accumulative toxicity when free AgNPs are applied. This study proposed a one-pot hydrothermal strategy to synthesize carbon spheres immobilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@CS). The synthesis involves with silver ammonia solution as Ag precursor, and corn stalk as green reducing agent and carbon precursor. Furthermore, AgNPs@CS was anchored by cellulose nanofibers (CNF) to obtain the antibacterial composite paper. The obtained CNF/AgNPs@CS paper exhibited superior antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus . Notably, the accumulative release rate of AgNPs from AgNPs@CS was 10.2% in 9 days, while that from CNF/AgNPs@CS paper was only 6.7% due to the anchoring effect of both CS and CNF, which was low for avoiding the cumulative toxicity problem. In addition, the mechanical and barrier properties of CNF/AgNPs@CS paper were also improved by 29.4% (tensile index), 2.7% (tear index), 7.4% (burst index), 10% (folding endurance), 0.8% (water vapor transmission) and 9.4% (oxygen transmission rate), respectively. Therefore, the composite paper has potential application as a medical antibacterial material.

Cellulose-based materials find extensive applications in sound absorption due to their high porosity, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness. However, these materials also suffer from some limitations such as hydrophilicity and low thermal stability that restrict their applicability and lifespan. Herein, we report a cellulose/basalt fiber (CBF) broadband sound absorption composite paper with excellent thermal insulation and hydrophobic properties fabricated by wet forming and silane vapor treatment. Benefiting from the introduction of eco-friendly basalt fibers, the composite paper has an adjusted pore structure and thermal conduction pathway, leading to enhanced sound absorption and thermal insulation performance. Particularly, the composite paper with 50 wt% basalt fiber shows remarkable sound absorption coefficient (0.71 on average) and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.034 W/m·K). As a novel application of eco-friendly materials for sound absorption, the CBF composite paper is an ideal candidate for indoor architectural decoration.

Highly efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are critical for portable hardware and flexible electronics, where mechanical durability often poses challenges. Here, the excellent wear resistance and flexibility of thermoplastic polyurethane are utilized to provide a “protective layer” for EMI equipment. A carbon nanotube/cellulose/thermoplastic polyurethane (CNT/paper/TPU) composite paper with a three-layer structure was prepared using a coating method. Strong hydrogen bonds between CNTs, cellulose, and TPU ensured robust integration. The composite, with a thickness of 0.54 mm and conductivity of 1040 S/m, achieved exceptional EMI shielding effectiveness of 69.0 dB. It demonstrated durability against water, solvents, bending, and friction while maintaining shielding performance. Furthermore, its excellent mechanical properties and fatigue resistance significantly enhance equipment lifespan. Therefore, it is expected that this work will open a simple strategy for developing materials with excellent durable EMI shielding properties.

It remains a challenge to prepare special engineering paper with excellent mechanical properties, high temperature resistance and chemical resistance. The emergence of high-performance fiber provides support for the technical progress of special engineering paper. Herein, a novel method to obtain a novel self-reinforced poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composite paper (SR-DI-PEEK/paper) by vacuum filtration, impregnation and hot pressing. Specially, PEEK fibers were used as the skeleton fiber and a small amount of aramid pulp was added as the decanted fiber. By optimizing the process of SR-DI-PEEK/paper preparation, the best mechanical properties of SR-DI-PEEK/paper was presented. Compared with the composite paper prepared with Phenolic solution (PF-PEEK/paper) and Polyimide solution (PI-PEEK/paper), the mechanical properties of SR-DI-PEEK/paper was significantly improved. In particular, when the concentration of impregnation was 3 wt%, the tensile index of SR-DI-PEEK/paper reached 51.10 N m g −1 (tensile strength 47.16 kN m −1 ), which is 16.48 times than that of the un-impregnated PEEK/paper (2.86 kN m −1 ). SR-DI-PEEK/paper also exhibited excellent chemical resistance among acid, alkali, and polar solvents, while the tensile index maintained 96.3% after 40 wt% H 2 SO 4 treatment. Besides, SR-DI-PEEK/paper showed superior thermal performance, while the temperatures corresponding to the weight loss of 5% were 574 °C. Graphical abstract

Cellulose has gained popularity in the energy and chemical industries due to its abundant resources, low cost, and biodegradability. However, traditional cellulose paper exhibits deficiencies in strength, flame retardancy, and hydrophobicity, thereby limiting its application in packaging materials as well as posing safety hazards. In this work, multifunctional cellulose nanofiber composite papers (AS-LAB) were fabricated via a combination of charge difference design and vacuum filtration technology, followed by the double coating of mixed micro-scaled and nano-scaled particles. The strength of the AS-LAB composite paper was enhanced by 2.2 times compared to that of pure cellulose paper, attributed to the multiple interactions (including hydrogen bonding, covalent cross-linking, and electrostatic attraction) between the components and the perfect match of particles with different scales. Moreover, the simultaneous utilization of different ammonium polyphosphates with high and low polymerization degrees offers the AS-LAB composite paper with remarkable flame retardancy, and the rough surface in the sandwich structure caused by the multiscale particles renders the composite paper with desirable hydrophobicity (water contact angle 138.1°) and self-cleaning properties. Therefore, the design and fabrication of cellulose nanofiber composite paper shed light on the paper performance improvement and suggest its potential application in the packaging field.

The structural design of material significantly influences its electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance, providing an intelligent approach to attain desirable EMI shielding performances. Inspired by the ultra-large distance of the middle layer in corrugated paper, we proposed a novel composite paper with corrugated paper-like structure via the assembling of two pieces of surface-modified filter paper and an aerogel film. Specifically, a conventional filter paper was modified with the conductive hydrogel film consisting of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF), cationic starch (CS) and Ti 3 C 2 T x . The TOCNF and CS rapidly formed a composite hydrogel when mixed, due to their electrostatic interactions. The aforementioned aerogel film was produced through the freeze-drying of TOCNF/CS hydrogel, and it enlarged the distance between two conductive hydrogel film modified papers when inserted. The assembled composite papers demonstrated a maximum EMI SE of 71.0 dB, improved by 19.7 % as compared to the control without the aerogel film (59.3 dB). The expansion of the distance between conductive layers likely facilitated the enhancement in the multiple reflections and absorptions of electromagnetic waves. This novel composite paper showed better EMI shielding performance than many previously-reported materials considering the thickness and conductive filler dosage. In addition, the composite paper also showed exceptional infrared stealth capabilities since it effectively shielded the thermal radiation from human body. The composite paper still exhibited good infrared stealth ability at high temperature conditions (up to 120 ℃). Therefore, this research could inspire innovative concepts in designing high-performance and multifunctional EMI shielding materials in an economical way.

Due to the rapid industrialization, heavy metals contamination in the aquatic environment has become more serious. Thus, it is urgent to develop enhanced removal technology for heavy metals. Graphene oxide (GO) based composite paper-like materials have been widely applied for adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater. Herein, we fabricated for the first time an advanced, highly-ordered and homogenous PVC/PPD/GO paper-like material using a resin-infiltration technique. This process is complimentary to layer-by-layer assembly, where the assembling components are required to interact strongly (e.g., via hydrogen bonding or electrostatic attraction). The results showed that the composite papers could achieve high removal efficiency of the heavy metals from water. The amount of Pb(II) adsorbed at equilibrium as achieved by GO, PVC/GO-0.05, PVC/GO-0.08, PVC/PPD/GO-0.05 and PVC/PPD/GO-0.08 buckypapers were 17.61, 22.17, 25.41, 33.57 and 44.80 mg g −1 , respectively. In addition, the effects of experimental factors (e.g. GO content, ionic strength of heavy metal ions , temperature and solution pH) on heavy metal adsorption were discussed. Furthermore, the as-prepared PVC/PPD/GO-0.08 composite papers exhibited superior stability and could be recycled more than 900 h based on their 15 regeneration cycles. The improved heavy metal removal efficiency was attributed to the enhanced morphology and the formation of micro- and nano-channels created by the entangled PPD/GO. The findings indicated that the PVC/PPD/GO composite buckypapers could be used as promising materials for the adsorption of heavy metals from wastewater.
