Electron beam in-situ ultrafast curing of loadable primer-free polydimethylsiloxane coatings for composite insulators

Keyan Sheng,Xiaohan Dong,Haozhe Li,Zijian Zhou,Wenchao Zhou,Tian Zeng,Xinwen Liu,Zhiyan Chen,Mianzhi Xiong,Zhenyi Zhang,Kai Ning,Yanlong Gu,Jiang Huang

In-situ curing is a scalable industrial modification technique for composite insulators that can provide significant economic benefits by eliminating numerous curing steps. In this work, we developed an efficient, environmentally friendly, simple and substrate-free curing method, namely electron beam irradiation in-situ curing polydimethylsiloxane ( e -PDMS). The fabricated e- PDMS coating has excellent adhesion and is particularly impressive because of its ultrafast cure time of only 30 s. The coating has excellent thermomechanical properties with almost no thermal weight loss at 300 °C. Two common nanoparticles were individually cured on a silicone rubber surface and successfully made the surface superhydrophobic, heat-absorbing and passive cooling, respectively. The results illustrate that the e -PDMS method developed in this study can be effectively functionalized, verified its great potential for applications in the electrical industry, which can vastly facilitate the industrial application of advanced coatings.

Improving surface performance of silicone rubber for composite insulators by multifunctional Nano-coating

Shuming Liu,Shuqi Liu,Qian Wang,Zhou Zuo,Lan Wei,Zhong Chen,Xidong Liang

Composite insulator is an important component of outdoor insulation systems. It works in complex environments and faces a series of problems such as surface contamination, loss of hydrophobicity, and accumulation of surface charges, which may eventually lead to flashover. Aiming to solve these problems in a simple and scalable method, we propose a multifunctional nano-coating based on SiO 2 /PDMS/EP. By the combination of multiscale structure and low surface energy modification, this coating shows excellent water-repellency performance, a large contact angle greater than 160° and a small rolling angle near 0° are achieved on coated silicone rubber, which enables the surface with excellent self-cleaning performance. Benefiting from the multiscale roughness, the heat transfer is inhibited by the reduced contact area, which further slows down the icing process on coated silicone rubber. The de-icing force on coated silicone rubber is also smaller than that on pristine silicone rubber. This coating also introduces many shallow traps to the surface, which is beneficial to the fast surface charge dissipation in a short time. Besides, the high water-repelling ability can promote the droplet to roll away under the action of electrical field force, which alleviates the electrical distortion caused by the droplets. As a result, the wet flashover voltage of coated silicone rubber is 60% higher than that of pristine silicone rubber. This multifunctional coating is a facile, scalable, and effective approach to improving the comprehensive surface performance of insulators.

Preparation and Super-Hydrophobic Mechanism Analysis of FAS-17-Modified SiO2/PDMS Coatings for High-Voltage Composite Insulators

Chengqian Li,Peng Dou,Ruyi Zhao,Yurou Shi,Gaojie Fu,Bin Shen

Pollution flashover on insulators is one of the greatest challenges affecting the smooth operation of high-voltage transmission lines. Demonstrating super-hydrophobic coatings on insulators’ interfaces is an effective measure to prevent insulator flashovers. In the present investigation, a super-hydrophobic FAS-17-modified SiO2/PDMS coating on a composite insulator was demonstrated by spraying. The coating had a contact angle of 159.2° and a sliding angle of 1.3° with better insulation properties. The prepared FAS-17-modified nano-SiO2nanoparticles were not easy to agglomerate; to illustrate this, the binding energy was calculated by the density functional theory. The super-hydrophobic mechanism of the coating was explained in terms of the adsorption energy between SiO2molecules and water before and after modification. This paper provides a new method to solve the pollution flashover problem of insulators and a new angle to explain the super-hydrophobic mechanism.Keywords:super-hydrophobic;composite insulators;FAS-17-modified SiO2nanoparticles;de-agglomeration mechanism;super-hydrophobic mechanism;density functional theory

GO-PPDA modified and aligned PBO fibers for high-performance insulating core-rod composites

Le Li,Chi Wang,Hang Gao,Heyu Wang,Tianqi Lai,Zhuangzhuang Li,Xingdou Li,Wenhua Wu,Lei Yang,Yunpeng Liu

Composite insulators for high-voltage power grids are subject to multiple constraints concerning thermal conductivity, mechanical load-bearing capacity, and electrical insulation reliability. Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers are considered an ideal reinforcement phase owing to their excellent mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, and electrical insulation properties, but their smooth and inert surface results in poor interfacial adhesion with the epoxy resin matrix. Moreover, the lack of PBO fibers alignment control limits the full exploitation of their thermal conductivity for high-voltage insulation equipment. In this study, a synergistic strategy was developed to modify the PBO fiber surface with aminated graphene oxide (GO-PPDA) and to align the PBO fibers to enhance the interfacial, mechanical, and thermal properties of the resulting fiber-reinforced composite. In experiments, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was increased to a maximum of 57.62 MPa, representing a 54 % improvement over untreated fibers. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed, at the atomic scale, that the interfacial binding energy was significantly enhanced after GO-PPDA modification. The thermal conductivity of the composite with aligned fibers reached 1.531 W m −1  K −1 , which is dramatically higher than that of its randomly oriented counterpart.Optimized amination also improved breakdown strength to 32.5 kV mm −1 while effectively suppressing dielectric loss. Moreover, electrostatic field simulations confirmed that the introduced uniform GO-PPDA contributes to electric field homogenization. Furthermore, the flexural and tensile strengths of the composite were enhanced by 147.9 % and 224.4 %, respectively. This study provides a systematic design strategy for the development of high-performance insulating core rods for composite insulators.

Evaluation of Dynamic Hydrophobicity Behavior of Silicone Rubber Insulators Filled With 2D Nanosheets Using a Direct Current Dynamic Drop Test

Mahmoud A. Ali,Xingliang Jiang,Ran Li,Ahmed S. Menesy,Waleed M. Hamanah,Muhammad Khalid

The growing use of composite polymer insulators in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems requires a thorough understanding of their dynamic hydrophobicity characteristics to ensure long-term reliability. This study investigates the retention, recovery, and transfer of hydrophobicity in silicone rubber (SiR) composites filled with two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, specifically molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and tungsten disulfide (WS2), under DC Dynamic Drop Test (DDT) conditions. The efficacy of these fillers is evaluated against traditional alumina trihydrate (ATH) and fumed silica (SiO2) fillers. The Weibull probability analysis of the hydrophobicity retention test indicates that MoS2-filled composites achieved the highest hydrophobicity retention time (773.4 min), representing a 324.3% increase compared to the unfilled sample (185.4 min), while WS2 composites showed a 223.1% increase (609.7 min). In terms of hydrophobic recovery after 24 hours, MoS2 composites demonstrated a 282.6% improvement (125.6 min), followed by WS2 with a 160.4% improvement ( $\eta =87.1$ min) relative to the unfilled reference (33.9 min). The hydrophobicity transfer test showed that fumed silica promoted faster low molecular weight (LMW) migration, while MoS2 and WS2 slowed LMW diffusion due to stronger filler-matrix interactions. Experimental improvements-such as optimized sample preparation, electrolyte control, and voltage ramping-significantly reduced test variability, improving DDT reproducibility. The findings confirm that MoS2 and WS2 nanosheets substantially enhance the long-term hydrophobic stability of SiR composites under HVDC stress, highlighting their suitability for outdoor insulation applications.
