Natural locomotion such as walking, crawling, and swimming relies on spatially controlled deformation of soft tissues, which could allow efficient interaction with the external environment. As one of the ideal candidates for biomimetic materials, hydrogels can exhibit versatile bionic morphings. However, it remains an enormous challenge to transfer these in situ deformations to locomotion, particularly above complex terrains. Herein, inspired by the crawling mode of inchworms, an isotropic hydrogel with thermoresponsiveness could evolve to an anisotropic hydrogel actuator via interfacial diffusion polymerization, further evolving to multisection structure and exhibiting adaptive deformation with diverse degrees of freedom. Therefore, a dynamic mortise-and-tenon interlock could be generated through the interaction between the self-deformation of the hydrogel actuator and rough terrains, inducing continual multidimensional locomotion on various artificial rough substrates and natural sandy terrain. Interestingly, benefiting from the powerful mechanical energy transfer capability, the crawlable hydrogel actuators could also be utilized as hydrogel motors to activate static cargos to overstep complex terrains, which exhibit the potential application of a biomimetic mechanical discoloration device. Therefore, we believe that this design principle and control strategy may be of potential interest to the field of deformable materials, soft robots, and biomimetic devices.

Multimodal and controllable locomotion in complex terrain is of great importance for practical applications of insect-scale robots. Robust locomotion plays a particularly critical role. In this study, a locomotion mechanism for magnetic robots based on asymmetrical friction effect induced by magnetic torque is revealed and defined. The defined mechanism overcomes the design constraints imposed by both robot and substrate structures, enabling the realization of multimodal locomotion on complex terrains. Drawing inspiration from human walking and running locomotion, a biped robot based on the mechanism is proposed, which not only exhibits rapid locomotion across substrates with varying friction coefficients but also achieves precise locomotion along patterned trajectories through programmed controlling. Furthermore, apart from its exceptional locomotive capabilities, the biped robot demonstrates remarkable robustness in terms of load-carrying and weight-bearing performance. The presented locomotion and mechanism herein introduce a novel concept for designing magnetic robots while offering extensive possibilities for practical applications in insect-scale robotics.

There is a consensus that the prevention of wound infection should be achieved in the following ways: (1) closing the wound to protect it from extra infection; (2) an antibacterial agent that could kill endogenous bacteria. However, existing bulk two-dimensional antibacterial materials show inefficient adhesion to wounds with complex morphology and thus cause the prevention of wound closure. Reducing the thickness of bulk two-dimensional materials to less than 100 nanometres endows them with great flexibility, which could allow them to adhere to wounds with complex morphology by only physical adhesion. Herein, a broad-spectrum and efficient antimicrobial peptide (AMP) was introduced to biocompatible methacrylated gelatine (GelMA) with multiple modification sites, which served as an inner antibacterial layer. After being combined with a biodegradable and good mechanical poly-l-lactide (PLLA) outer layer through plasma-treatment-assisted spin coating, we finally constructed bilayered antibacterial nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 80 nm. These bilayered nanosheets possess good adhesion to surfaces with complex topography and thus achieve better wound closure than other bulk two-dimensional materials. Moreover, this AMP-grafted conjugation shows minimal cytotoxicity compared with Ag + antibacterial agents, and the antibacterial rate of nanosheets is dependent on the graft rate of AMP. We suggest that this bilayered antibacterial nanosheet might be an advanced anti-infection dressing for wound treatment in clinical settings.

Magnetoactive soft millirobots have made significant advances in programmable deformation, multimodal locomotion, and untethered manipulation in unreachable regions. However, the inherent limitations are manifested in the solid-phase millirobot as limited deformability and in the liquid-phase millirobot as low stiffness. Herein, we propose a ternary-state magnetoactive millirobot based on a phase transitional polymer embedded with magnetic nanoparticles. The millirobot can reversibly transit among the liquid, solid, and viscous-fluid phases through heating and cooling. The liquid-phase millirobot has elastic deformation and mobility for unimpeded navigation in a constrained space. The viscous-fluid phase millirobot shows irreversible deformation and large ductility. The solid-phase millirobot shows good shape stability and controllable locomotion. Moreover, the ternary-state magnetoactive millirobot can achieve prominent capabilities including stiffness change and shape reconfiguration through phase transition. The millirobot can perform potential functions of navigation in complex terrain, three-dimensional circuit connection, and simulated treatment in a stomach model. This magnetoactive millirobot may find new applications in flexible electronics and biomedicine.
