Hierarchical Janus membrane with superior fouling and wetting resistance for efficient water recovery from challenging wastewater via membrane distillation

Shanshan Zhao,Zhu Tao,Muqiao Han,Yu-xi Huang,Bin Zhao,Liang Wang,Xuelin Tian,Fangang Meng

Conventional hydrophobic membranes are susceptible to membrane fouling and pore wetting, impeding the applications of membrane distillation (MD) processes for water recovery from complex wastewater. To address these challenges, we herein developed a novel Janus membrane by a hybrid plant-derived polyphenols coating and polyelectrolytes layer-by-layer assembly strategy. Through alternative deposition of catechol/chitosan and polyethylenimine (PEI) on top of a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) substrate, a Janus membrane with a superhydrophilic and defect-free top layer was achieved. The synergistic effects of covalent bonding, non-covalent interactions, and electrostatic interactions between neighboring coatings endowed the membrane with robust chemical stability in the pH range of 2–12. In comparison with the pristine PVDF membrane, the Janus membrane exhibited remarkably stable water vapor flux and high quality of effluent during long-term treatments of non-ionic/cationic surfactants and Tween® 20-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion in the bench-scale direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) experiments. The excellent anti-fouling and anti-wetting properties of the Janus membrane were attributed to its hierarchical structured superhydrophilic surface, in which a strong hydration layer was formed and served as an energetic barrier to prevent adsorption of surfactants and oil droplets. Moreover, the electrostatic repulsion between the protonated amino groups on the membrane surface and cationic surfactant molecules also contributed to the robust long-term performance (nearly one-week operation) of the Janus membrane in the treatment of saline water containing cationic surfactant. Our findings reveal the significant role of surface functionality in fouling and wetting resistance of MD membranes and the as-developed Janus membrane shows great potential for water recovery from saline wastewater containing challenging contaminants via DCMD.

Smart Janus membrane for on-demand separation of oil, bacteria, dye, and metal ions from complex wastewater

Jietao Hu,Lishuang Gui,Mingning Zhu,Kuiliang Liu,Ya Chen,Xiaopan Wang,Jing Lin

Oil spills and oily wastewater discharged from industries and households have resulted in environmental and economic concerns. Therefore, emerging Janus membranes with anisotropic wettability have attracted significant attention as next-generation oil/water separation membranes owing to their specific, on-demand separation ability. However, the one-step separation of complex wastewater has not yet been achieved. Herein, a pH-responsive siloxane modified polystyrene microsphere/zinc oxide/carbon nanotube/polyvinylidene fluoride (S/PS/ZnO/CNTs/PVDF) membrane was rationally designed with Janus surfaces for providing hydrophilicity/underwater lipophobicity and lipophilicity/underoil hydrophobicity functionality. This study demonstrates that the underlying mechanism of on-demand separation of water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsion is related to wettability, adhesive forces, and intrusion pressure. The proposed Janus membrane can achieve one-step separation of complex wastewater comprising oil, bacteria, organic dye, and metal ions. The effective removal of dyes is due to synergistic effects of electrostatic adsorption and photodegradation. This facile strategy for fabricating smart Janus separation membranes has application potential in on-demand oil/water separation and practical complex wastewater separation.

Selective adsorption of Congo red and Cu(II) from complex wastewater by core-shell structured magnetic carbon@zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 nanocomposites

Zikang Xiong,Huaili Zheng,Yadan Hu,Xuebin Hu,Wei Ding,Jiangya Ma,Yisen Li

Efficient and convenient removal of   organic dyes and heavy metals   from complex wastewater is still a challenge for human health and ecosystem remediation. Novel adsorbent, Fe 3 O 4 @Carbon@ZIF-8 with specific core-shell structure was synthesized by layer-by-layer self-assembly. The hydrophilic carbonaceous shell acts as both a linker and stabilizer between Fe 3 O 4   and ZIF-8. The characteristics of self-made adsorbent were comprehensively identified by numerous characterization methods. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and the influence of various reacting parameters on its adsorption capacity of Congo red (CR) and Cu(II)   were systematically investigated. Compared with other reported adsorbents, the maximum adsorption capacities of Fe 3 O 4 @Carbon@ZIF-8 towards CR (806.45 mg g −1 ) and Cu(II) (234.74 mg g −1 ) were much higher. Moreover, the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Selective adsorption of CR was investigated in the presence of cationic   and anionic dyes, and the same as Cu(II) in the existence of competitive ions, which revealed that it was appropriate for selective adsorption toward CR and Cu(II) in complex wastewater. On the basis of FT-IR and XPS analyses, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, π-π bonding and ion exchange were involved in the mechanism of adsorption.   Fe 3 O 4 @Carbon@ZIF-8 is suitable for practical application because of its   good stability and reusability.

Multifunctional cellulose paper-based materials and their application in complex wastewater treatment

Shan Jiang,Jianfeng Xi,Hongqi Dai,Weibing Wu,Huining Xiao

The rapid and efficient treatment of complex wastewater remains challenging. Herein, green paper-based materials with high wet strength, good oil-water separation property and high heavy metal ion adsorption capacity were prepared via a facile, cost-effective process. The introduction of amphoteric functional groups not only met the requirements for heavy metal ion adsorption, but also maintained the stable underwater superoleophobic properties of materials a wide pH range. The covalent crosslinking between cellulose fibers induced by polyethyleneimine and citric acid significantly improved the wet strength (up to 26.0 Nm/g) and the porosity. The membrane flux was increased up to 3515 L/(m 2 ·h) and the separation efficiencies were higher than 98%. Moreover, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacities for Cd(II) and Pb(II) reached 73.29 and 93.75 mg/g, respectively. Combined with filtration technology, the materials can realize the continuous and efficient purification of complex wastewater.

A versatile β-cyclodextrin and polyethyleneimine bi-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent for simultaneous capture of methyl orange and Pb(II) from complex wastewater

Bo Chen,Sijiang Chen,Huinan Zhao,Yang Liu,Fengxia Long,Xuejun Pan

Ascribing to their significant differences in physicochemical properties , it is extremely challenging to treat complex wastewater containing more than one class of pollutants via one-step treatment. Here, we focused on disposal of complex wastewater bearing organic dye and heavy metal by using adsorptive method. Thus, by combining the advantages of polyethyleneimine (PEI), β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as well as Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles , a versatile β-CD and PEI bi-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent (Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD) with spatially separated sorption sites was successfully constructed for simultaneous capture of methyl orange (MO) and Pb(II) in complex wastewater. In this setting, β-CD cavities and positively charged N-containing groups of PEI were mainly responsible for removal of MO via host-guest inclusion and electrostatic attraction, respectively, and oxygen-bearing groups on the edge of β-CD as well as the free amino moieties in PEI acted as the active sites for Pb(II) uptake. In their individual mono-pollutant system, the adsorption processes can be better described via applying pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Interestingly, presence of MO in Pb(II)-MO binary system significantly promoted the uptake of Pb(II). But the coexisting Pb(II) had almost no effects on MO uptake. Such results demonstrated that both MO and Pb(II) could be simultaneously and synergistically removed by Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD through multiple mechanisms (such as electrostatic attraction, host-guest inclusion, chelating, etc.). Particularly, the excellent regeneration and stability make Fe 3 O 4 -PEI/β-CD an ideal integrative adsorbent for purification of actual wastewater contaminated by MO and Pb(II). Thus, this study provides some insights into designing a well-performed and easily recyclable adsorbent for simultaneous and synergetic capture of both organic and inorganic contaminants in complex wastewater.

A novel Fe3+-stabilized magnetic polydopamine composite for enhanced selective adsorption and separation of Methylene blue from complex wastewater

Bo Chen,Yangrui Cao,Huinan Zhao,Fengxia Long,Xiang Feng,Juan Li,Xuejun Pan

Herein, a novel Fe 3+ -stabilized magnetic polydopamine composite (Fe 3 O 4 /PDA-Fe 3+ ) was facilely constructed, systematically characterized, and subsequently applied for the first time as a versatile adsorbent for treatment of Methylene blue (MB) in complex wastewater. Results showed that as-prepared material had prominent adsorption ability toward MB in its single dye solution over a wide pH range (3–10) with q max value of 608.8 mg/g at 318 K. More interestingly, MB could be selectively captured by resulting adsorbent from mixed dye solutions (MB-cationic dye and MB-anionic dye) and complex aqueous solution with high ionic strength up to 0.5 mol/L NaCl. It was eventually revealed that the enhanced and selective adsorption of MB by as-resultant adsorbent was due to the synergistic effects between multiple uptake mechanisms. What's more, its adsorption efficiency toward MB in simulated wastewater still maintained higher than 80 % of its original uptake performance after several runs of adsorption-desorption. Additionally, it exhibited more superior uptake performance toward MB than commercial powder activated carbon (PAC) in column adsorption system. Thus, the outstanding sorption ability, unique capture selectivity, as well as excellent stability and recyclability for model wastewater endow it a promising candidate adsorbent for selective adsorption and separation of MB from complex wastewater.

Enhanced selective adsorption of lead(II) from complex wastewater by DTPA functionalized chitosan-coated magnetic silica nanoparticles based on anion-synergism

Yaoyao Huang,Huaili Zheng,Xuebin Hu,Yuyang Wu,Xiaohui Tang,Qiang He,Shangyu Peng

Simultaneously removing heavy metal and dye from complex wastewater is of great significance to industrial wastewater treatment . Herein, a novel magnetic adsorbent, DTPA-modified chitosan-coated magnetic silica nanoparticle (FFO@Sil@Chi-DTPA), was successfully prepared and used to enhance the Pb(II) selective adsorption from multi-metal wastewater based on anion-synergism. In the competitive experiment conducted in a multi-ion solution, the type of selective adsorption of metals was changed by the adsorbents before and after amidation, in which FFO@Sil@Chi-DTPA exhibited an excellent selectively for capturing Pb(II), while FFO@Sil@Chi demonstrated highly selective adsorption of silver. More importantly, the selective adsorption of Pb(II)S by FFO@Sil@Chi-DTPA was enhanced from 111.71 to 268.01 mg g −1 when the coexisting MB concentrations ranged from 0 to 100 mg L −1 at pH 6.0. In the Pb(II)-MB binary system, Pb(II) and MB exhibited a synergistic effect, in which the presence of MB strengthened the adsorption effect of Pb(II) due to the sulfonic acid groups in MB molecules that create new specific sites for Pb(II) adsorption, while MB adsorption was also enhanced by the presence of Pb(II). This work provides a new strategy for exploring novel adsorbents that can enhance the selective removal of heavy metal in complex wastewater based on anion-synergism.

Highly efficient capacitive removal of Cd2+ over MoS2-Carbon framework composite material in desulphurisation wastewater from coal-fired power plants

Taozhu Yin,Yongsheng Zhang,Duo Dong,Tao Wang,Jiawei Wang

Cadmium (Cd 2+ ) is the main toxic heavy metal in desulphurisation wastewater for coal-fired power plants. Here, a novel carbon skeleton/molybdenum disulphide composite material (MoS 2 /AC) with expanded layer spacing was synthetized in one step for Cd 2+ removal through the capacitive deionization method. As the results showed, the Cd 2+ removal capacity of the MoS 2 /AC cell was 22.15 mg g −1 , and the concentration of Cd 2+ in the simulated wastewater was effectively reduced from 10 ppm to <0.1 ppm. According to the characterisation, the layer spacing of MoS 2 nanosheets in MoS 2 /AC increased by 58.06% compared with the original commercial MoS 2 , which could provide more active sites for Cd 2+ adsorption. Moreover, the XPS results showed that electrosorption and complexation on the surface of MoS 2 /AC were the main routes for Cd 2+ removal, especially the complexation between Cd 2+ and metal-sulphur. In addition, the selective adsorption efficiency of MoS 2 /AC was more than 98% under the coexistence of other ions, such as Na + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ . The regenerated MoS 2 /AC also had a high adsorption capacity for Cd 2+ even after 5 cycles. The MoS 2 /AC material also exhibited excellent removal capability for heavy metal ions in the actual desulphurisation wastewater from coal-fired power plants (<1 ppb). The results indicated that MoS 2 /AC may be a prospective material for heavy metal ion removal from wastewater.

Construction the soil-root-like heterostructure of Fe(Ⅲ)-MOF/AgNWs composite membrane with photo-Fenton antifouling performance towards complex wastewater remediation

Lan Ma,Teng Wang,Yan Wan,Guilan Zhang,Xinyan Li,Minghang Jiang,Liyun Zhang

Developing a novel type of high-performance catalytic separation membrane with multifunctional remediation towards efficiently complex wastewater has been an anticipated goal. Inspired by the natural soil filtration system, we successfully constructed a soil-root-like Fe(Ⅲ)-MOF/AgNWs heterostructured membrane (AgNWs/CMC@NMB) with photo-fenton degradation property through a facile self-assembly approach under vacuum. Herein, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) acted as the root, which were boned with the soil-like of the nubbly NH 2 -MIL-88B(Fe) aggregation by electrostatic force and hydrogen bonding interaction to form a stable soil-like heterostructured membrane. The resultant AgNWs/CMC@NMB membrane revealed remarkable selective wettability (water contact angles (WCAs) ∼0°, underwater oil contact angles (UWOCAs) > 155°), and exhibited splendid removal efficiency (>99 %) for insoluble oils under separation flux of 1343 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . Profiting from a soil-root-like porous filter structure, AgNWs/CMC@NMB membrane achieved concurrent treatment of the insoluble oils and soluble dyes by one-step efficient filtration, notably, the disposal efficiency for anionic and cationic dyes by soil-root-like structure reached above 96.7 %. Moreover, acting like roots in the soil to transport water and stabilize the soil, AgNWs facilitated electron transfer of the photo-Fenton system of Fe-MOF and enhanced the photocatalytic degradation capacity of composite membrane for the organic contaminant , which also endowed the photo-induced regeneration of fouled membrane. Overall, the construction of Fe(Ⅲ)-MOF/AgNWs composite membrane with a Soil-Root-like heterostructure emerged as a feasible route to achieve the complex sewage remediation.

Removing miscellaneous heavy metals by all-in-one ion exchange-nanofiltration membrane

Zheng-Jun Fu,Shang-Kun Jiang,Xin-Yi Chao,Chun-Xu Zhang,Qixun Shi,Zhen-Yuan Wang,Mei-Ling Liu,Shi-Peng Sun

The composition of wastewater containing heavy metal mixtures is often complex and poses a serious threat to human and environmental health. Effective removal of a variety of heavy metal ions with a single technology is challenging, and the conventional split integrated technologies require multi-step processing and a massive footprint. For the first time, we achieve hierarchically integrating ion exchange and nanofiltration into all-in-one “iNF” membranes. The iNF membrane has a hierarchical structure with an interfacial polymerization layer and an ion exchange layer, which can achieve highly efficient indiscriminate heavy metal ion removal, overcoming the defect that traditional nanofiltration membranes can only remove single metal cations or oxyanions. The ion exchange layer can remove heavy metal ions through sulfonic acid groups and quaternary amine groups. In addition, the ion exchange layer can be regenerated by electro-deionization, which is meaningful for sustainable membrane usage. This facile, scalable, and compact integrated process shows outstanding potential and universal applicability in complex wastewater treatment.

Mechanistic Insights into the Removal of Surfactant-Like Contaminants on Mesoporous Polydopamine Nanospheres from Complex Wastewater Matrices

Lingyue Zhang,Mingchun Li,Chu Tang,Huijing Wang,Xunming Zhang,Jianchao Wang,Hongxin Li,Mohd Salim Mahtab,Dongbei Yue

The detrimental environmental effects of surfactant-like contaminants (SLCs) with distinctive amphiphilic structures have garnered significant attention, particularly since perfluorooctanesulfonate was classified as a persistent organic pollutant. Despite the numerous absorbents developed for SLCs removal, the underlying interaction mechanisms remain speculative and lack experimental validation. To address this research gap, we elucidate the mechanistic insights into the selective removal of SLCs using mesoporous polydopamine nanospheres (MPDA) fabricated via a novel soft-template method. We employed low-field nuclear magnetic resonance to quantitatively characterize the hydrophilicity of the absorbents using water molecules as probes. The results demonstrated that MPDA with uniform mesopores exhibited a remarkable threefold enhancement in SLCs’ adsorption capacity compared to conventional polydopamine particles via intraparticle diffusion. We further demonstrated the dominant effects of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions on the selective removal of SLCs with MPDA by regulating the isoelectric pH value and performing a comparative analysis. The mechanism-inspired SLC-removal strategy achieved an average removal rate of 76.3% from highly contaminated wastewater. Our findings offer new avenues for applying MPDA as an efficient adsorbent and provide innovative and mechanistic insights for targeted SLC removal in complex wastewater matrices.

Synergistic electronic modulation via Sn/P dual-doping engineering enables robust bifunctional electrocatalysis in complex wastewater systems

Zhaoxiang Qi,Yan Zhang,Junzi Huang,Wenjun Zhang,Ying Wang,Ying Qi,Shu Yin,Hongyu Mi,Yahong Xie

The integration of environmental remediation with green hydrogen production bifunctional water electrolysis in hypersaline industrial effluents requires catalysts that simultaneously address efficiency-stability trade-offs. This study presents a self-supported P-SnCoFe-LDH/NF architecture engineered through dual-ion co-doping, demonstrating unprecedented performance in chloride-rich alkaline oilfield wastewater. The optimised catalyst achieves overpotentials of 253 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 187 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at 10 mA cm −2 with 12-h stability, representing a 4 and 41 % performance retention improvement over conventional CoFe-LDH in aggressive media. Mechanistic studies reveal dual electronic modulation: Sn-doping induces d-band center downshifting while P-incorporation generates electron-deficient metal centers. This synergy establishes optimal adsorption–desorption equilibrium, evidenced by 21 % reduced OER charge transfer resistance and 56 % enhanced HER Volmer kinetics. The symmetric electrolyser (P-SnCoFe-LDH/NF||P-SnCoFe-LDH/NF) maintains <2 % voltage decay during continuous operation. This work presents a new paradigm for multifunctional electrocatalysis in complex aqueous matrices.
