Multi-crosslinking nanoclay/oxidized cellulose hydrogel bandage with robust mechanical strength, antibacterial and adhesive properties for emergency hemostasis

Tiange Zhao,Ruyi Ren,Shiyue Qiao,Xinyi Tang,Zhe Chi,Fei Jiang,Chenguang Liu

Emergency bleeding presents significant challenges such as high blood flow and rapid hemorrhaging. However, many existing hemostatic bandages face limitations, including the uncontrolled release of hemostatic agents, insufficient mechanical strength, poor adhesion, and complex manufacturing processes. To address these limitations, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel bandage for emergency hemostasis using a one-pot synthesis method. The hydrogel was composed of kaolin, N -hydroxysuccinimide-grafted oxidized microcrystalline cellulose (OMCC-NHS), and polyacrylic acid (PAA). Featuring a multi-crosslinked network, it exhibited favorable elasticity (∼942 %), tensile strength (∼220 kPa), fatigue resistance, and robust tissue adhesion (∼55 kPa)-3.9 times stronger than commercial wound-closure strips, and it maintained adhesion even underwater. In addition to its mechanical properties, the hydrogel also exhibited satisfactory antibacterial activity, cytocompatibility, and histocompatibility. In vivo evaluations revealed an impressive hemostatic performance in rat models of liver bleeding, femoral artery bleeding, and tail amputation. Specifically, in the liver bleeding model, the hydrogel reduced blood loss to only 0.1 g, which is just 32 % of the blood loss seen with medical gauze. Notably, in New Zealand rabbit models with cardiac punctures and liver injuries, the hydrogel achieved rapid hemostasis and stopped the bleeding within seconds. The effective hemostatic ability of this hydrogel is primarily due to its ability to facilitate multistep hemostasis, which includes sealing the wound, rapidly absorbing blood, promoting RBC and platelets adhesion, and activating the intrinsic coagulation cascade. Therefore, this study provides a promising approach for developing gel-based hemostatic bandages, specifically tailored for emergency compressible bleeding scenarios.

A multiple cross-linking strategy to develop an environment-friendly and water resistance wheat gluten protein wood adhesive

Zenghui Cheng,Ren Ye,Xiaoyu Shi,Chenhuan Lai,Shishuai Gao,Daihui Zhang,Yuzhi Xu,Chunpeng Wang,Fuxiang Chu

Wheat gluten (WG) shows great promise to synthesize environment-friendly wood adhesives. However, their weak bonding strength and poor water resistance have limited its application in the commercial wood-based panel industry. In this study, a novel WG-based adhesive was developed by constructing a multiple cross-linking network generated by covalent and non-covalent bonds. The potential mechanism was revealed by FT-IR analysis. Furthermore, their surface morphology, thermal stability , viscosity, and residual rate of adhesives with different compositions were systematically characterized and compared. The results showed that the hydrogen bonding, reactions between amine groups and tannin , and ring opening reaction of epoxy, synergistically contributed to generate a highly crosslinked network. The wet/boil water strength of the plywood prepared from WG/tannin/ethylene imine polymer (PEI)-glycerol triglycidyl ether (GTE) adhesive with the addition of 15 % GTE could reach 1.21 MPa and 1.20 MPa, respectively, and a mildew resistance ability was observed. This study provides a facile strategy to fabricate high-performance plant protein-based adhesives with desirable water resistance for practical application.

Reducing defects in hard carbon graphite domain: Employing a fully dynamic bonding with a multi-crosslinked biomass-based binder for enhanced sodium ion storage

Jiaqi Jiao,Han Lu,Conghua Yi,Dongjie Yang,Xuezhi Zeng,Jinxin Lin,Hongqiang Li

Binders are crucial for maintaining the integrity of an electrode and are confronted with the imperative for multifunctionality. Herein, we have developed and synthesized an entirely biomass-based water-soluble binder with outstanding adhesion, conductivity, flowability, and dispersibility for the hard carbon (HC) anode. Specifically, MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) reduces the amount of HC graphite domain imperfections, the cross-linked carboxymethyl chitosan (CCS) chain facilitates Na + movement, and the amphiphilic nature of lignosulfonate (LS) enhances the distribution of active material. As a result, the HC anode achieves an initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) of 88 % and high-capacity retention of 110 % after 100 cycles. This work promotes the progress of green energy in parallel with the promotion of the high-value utilization of biomass.

Boosting the loading dosage of cinnamon essential oil within edible packaging film via the multiple cross-linking strategy for effective shrimp preservation

Huijie Yang,Zhihang Xu,Leping Li,Chao Li,Yehan Tao,Jie Lu,Jinwen Hu,Xiaodong Xia,Mingqian Tan,Jian Du,Haisong Wang

Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) has been extensively employed as active compound in the active packaging film for food preservation, whereas its volatilization during the fabrication process restricted the loading and preservation effect. Herein, the multiple cross-linking strategy was proposed to design and construct the novel sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/cellulose nanofiber-cinnamon essential oil (CNF-CEO)/citric acid (CA) (CCEA) film. Experimental characterization revealed that the multiple intermolecular crosslinks ( e.g. hydrogen bond and ester bond etc. ) within the polymer network reinforced the network and enabled the film to reduce the thermal movement of the molecular chains, which in turn prevented the CEO volatilization during processing. The optimized CCE 0.2 A 0.2 with the mass ratio of 2:0.5:0.2:0.2 (g/g/g/g) possessed the highest CEO retention of 65.7%, which was much higher than the CCE 0.2 A 0 of 11.71%. The oxygen, moisture barrier and tensile strength were improved from 8.94 cm 3 μm/(m 2 · day · KPa), 1412.34 g m −2 · 24 h −1 and 10.55 MPa for CCE 0.2 A 0 film to 2.01 cm 3 μm/(m 2 · day · KPa), 1296.93 g m −2 · 24 h −1 and 25.93 MPa for CCE 0.2 A 0.2 , respectively. CCE 0.2 A 0.2 also presented well antimicrobial activity and antioxidation capacity (67.25%). When employed as packaging film, the CCE 0.2 A 0.2 film can effectively prolong the freshness of shrimp in refrigeration for 7 days. Our findings provided a novel perspective to suppress the volatilization of CEO during fabrication for effective food preservation.

Metal-assisted multiple-crosslinked thin film composite hollow fiber membrane for highly efficient bioethanol purification

Tengyang Zhu,Shutong Liu,Qing Xia,Ming Yi,Huan Liu,Hai Dong,Yan Wang

Polyamide (PA)-based thin film composite (TFC) membranes have been extensively applied in various membrane-based separations. However, research works for bioethanol purification are relatively limited due to insufficient hydrophilicity and chain packing density of the PA selective layer by conventional interfacial polymerization. In this work, a new TFC hollow fiber (HF) membrane is fabricated by metal-assisted multiple crosslinking strategy, that is, metal-coordinated crosslinking of the pristine PA layer and coordination complexation between metal ions and phytic acid (PhA) for advanced water/ethanol separation. By tuning coordination abilities of metal ions with PA and PhA and the cycle number of PhA/metal ion assembly, PA-based TFC HF membrane is perfected. Additionally, a joint experiment/simulation characterization is deployed to reveal the coordination abilities of various metal ions with the pristine PA and grafted PhA. Ultimately, the synergistic effect between PA layer and PhA-metal ion complexes (i.e., 1 + 1 > 2 effect) is embodied in the separation performance of water/ethanol separation. The resulting TFC-Fe 3+ -PhA membrane with the strongest PhA-metal ion coordination ability exhibits the best water/ethanol separation performance, i.e., the separation factor of 1703 (34 times higher than pristine PA TFC HF membrane) and total flux of 1705 g/m 2 h. This metal-assisted multiple crosslinking strategy is therefore believed to shed important lights on the development of next-generation high-performance TFC membranes for bioethanol purification.

Smart construction of metal chelating for enhancing waterborne polyurethane multi-crosslinked soybean meal adhesives

Zhicheng Zhang,Yanyan Bian,Zhi Li,Ao Zhang,Ying Zhang,Haijiao Kang,Jianzhang Li

Developing low-cost renewable bio-based adhesives with excellent properties remains a challenge. Soybean meal (SM) adhesives have gained widespread attention for being green. However, it still has the problems of poor water resistance, low toughness, and easy to mildew. Herein, a waterborne polyurethane (TWPU) with carboxyl side chains was synthesized from tartaric acid (TA). It was used as chelating ligands to form the metal chelating to synergistically modify (SM) adhesives. This overall improved the adhesives bonding strength , toughness and water resistance. The coordination interactions between the polyurethane molecules and the protein molecules of SM were formed by multi-crosslinking via metal chelating, covalent bonding, and hydrogen bonding to enhance the adhesive's toughness, bonding strength and water resistance. As a result, the wet bond strength and toughness of the modified SM adhesives were 166.7 % and 275.3 % higher than blank sample, respectively, reaching 1.29 MPa and 0.61 J. Considering of the used raw materials and synthesis method in our process are simple and widely available, this study provides an eco-friendly and effective method for green, low-cost, and high-performance wood-based composite adhesives.

Super Tough Anti-freezing and Antibacterial Hydrogel With Multi-crosslinked Network for Flexible Strain Sensor

Huimin Liu,Shiqiang Guan,Pengwei Wang,Xufeng Dong

Addressing the diverse environmental demands for electronic material performance, the design of a multifunctional ionic conductive hydrogel with mechanical flexibility, anti-freezing capability, and antibacterial characteristics represents an optimal solution. Leveraging the Dead Sea effect and the strong hydrogen bonding, this study exploits the CaCl 2 and the abundant hydroxyl groups in phytic acid (PA) to induce chain entanglements, thereby constructing a complex, multi-crosslinked network. Furthermore, PA and ternary solvent systems (CaCl 2 /Glycerol/H 2 O) synergistically impart excellent mechanical strength, toughness (with tensile strength of 8.93 MPa, elongation at break of 859.93%, and toughness of 39.92 MJ m −3 ), high electrical conductivity, antifreeze capability, antibacterial properties, and high strain sensitivity (gauge factor up to 2.10) to the hydrogels. Remarkably, the hydrogel structure maintains stability even after undergoing 6000 loading-unloading cycles, demonstrating its outstanding fatigue resistance. Upon receiving external stimuli, the hydrogel exhibits a response time of 126 ms, making it ideal for the dynamic monitoring of human motion signals. This study offers novel insight into the potential application of ionic conductive hydrogels as flexible sensors in challenging environments.

Preparation and Properties of Acrylic Acid-Modified Multicross-Linked Two-Component Waterborne Phase-Change Polyurethane

Tianhao Lu,Ying Qin,Yan Liu,Binjie Xin,Guankun Kuang,Haitao Zhou,Wulin Xia

Phase change materials (PCMs) are broadly adopted in buildings and other applications because of their excellent energy storage effect. However, aqueous phase change materials are less reported. In this article, a waterborne polyurethane with phase change functionality (WPU-A) was prepared and modified with trimethylolpropane (TMP) and hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA); and then allowed to cross-link with a waterborne polyurethane (WPU-B) with PTMG as the soft segment to produce a multicross-linked, two-component phase-change waterborne polyurethane (PCMWPU). It is discussed that the phase change properties, hydrophobicity, and tensile strength of PCMWPU films were improved with the addition of WPU-A. The data show that the highest enthalpy of PCMWPU films can reach 90.3 J/g, the static water contact angle can reach 108.3°, and the highest tensile strength is 27.4 MPa. In addition, PCMWPU film has shape stability at higher temperatures (100 °C), no liquid leakage, good thermal stability, and shows some reversible light transmission phenomenon, which has a wide range of application prospects.

Synthesis and performance evaluation of multi-crosslinked preformed particle gels with ultra-high strength and high-temperature and high-salinity resistance for conformance control

Jianan Deng,Haoyu Lian,Yuan Zhuang,Honghao Zhao,Zhanyi Wang,Yongjun Tian,Chao Lin,Haozhong Yuan,Miao Han,Guiwu Lu,Xiao Zhang

Preformed particle gels (PPGs) have been identified as an effective method to control conformance and mitigate excessive water production. However, the weak strength of swollen PPGs makes them susceptible to shear failure during formation migration in harsh reservoir conditions. To address this issue, a novel type of multi-crosslinked preformed particle gels (MC-PPGs) with ultra-high strength, exceptional temperature and salinity resistance has been developed. Vinyl silica nanoparticles (VSNPs) were first prepared and used as nano crosslinking agents and enhancing agents in constructing multiple cross-linking structures with macromolecules, functional monomers, and crosslinking agents. MC-PPGs have an elastic modulus up to 110,000 Pa, which is significantly higher than other existing PPGs. Additionally, when exposed to high-salinity environments (e.g., 20 % NaCl and 10 % CaCl 2  + 10 % MgCl 2 ), MC-PPGs remain for an extended period at elevated temperatures (80 °C for 24 months, 120 °C for 13 months, and over one month at 160 °C). Furthermore, the degradation products of MC-PPGs have minimal impact to reservoir permeability, with a core damage rate below 5 %. MC-PPGs are pH-adaptable (1 < pH < 12), which makes them a promising candidate for reservoirs with supercritical CO 2 flooding. Laboratory coreflooding tests have demonstrated that MC-PPGs provide excellent plugging efficiency (>99.9 %) for fractured cores and ultra-high breakthrough pressure gradients (>14 MPa/m) at varying test temperatures (20 °C, 80 °C, and 120 °C). Considering these unique features, MC-PPGs are ideally suited for oilfield applications.

Antimicrobial multi-crosslinking tamarind xyloglucan/protein-chitosan coating packaging films with self-recovery and biocompatible properties

Ruxia Ning,Xichuang Cheng,Fuhou Lei,Jiufang Duan,Kun Wang,Jianxin Jiang

Natural and high-quality biomass-based coating films are considered promising packaging to consumers. However, the poor mechanical properties and weak antimicrobial activity of biomass materials have limited their practical application. A cleaner and low-cost strategy is used to prepare antimicrobial, self-recovery, and biocompatible coating films using tamarind kernel powder (TKP) and chitosan (CS). The TKP protein and chitosan chains were covalently cross-linked with tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) to form a three-dimensional network based on THPC-amine dynamic bonds, and act as a sacrificial bond. Then, the hydrogen bond forms an interpenetrating network to build a strong multi-network film. Thus, the THPC multi-crosslinking TKP based films showed enhanced stretchable property (increased from 3.23 % to 77.54 %), and self-recovery after 30 min of recovery. Additionally, the film has been found to exhibit low water vapor permeability, low oxygen transmittance rate, and excellent antimicrobial efficiency (maximum inhibition zones: 24.39 mm). Moreover, the prepared films were demonstrated to be biocompatible and non-hemolytic based on cell viability and hemolytic activity assays. The method described herein could broaden the scope of biomass-based materials in the realm of antimicrobial coating films.

Nanocomposite Multi-Cross-Linked Hydrogels with High Strength, High Stretchability and High Conductivity for Multifunctional Wearable Sensors

Kang Du,Guoqiang Liu,Yuxin Zou,Zhuo Chen,Jinglun Guo,Nan Zhao,Ruisheng Guo,Feng Zhou,Weimin Liu

Conductive hydrogels have gained significant attention in advanced fields like wearable devices and soft robotics. However, the concurrent fabrication of wearable sensors based on hydrogels with both optimal mechanical properties and high conductivity remains a significant challenge due to the inherent brittleness of conventional hydrogels and the absence of conductive pathways within them. Addressing this challenge, this study successfully developed a nanocomposite multicross-linked hydrogel with high strength, high stretchability and high conductivity. The structure comprises a chemically cross-linked polyacrylamide (PAM) network and entangled gelatin chains induced by the Hofmeister effect. Multiple hydrogen bonds between gelatin, PAM, water molecules, carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs), and chitosan (CS) enhance the hydrogel’s crosslink density and stability. The hydrogel exhibits remarkable mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 0.83 MPa, stretchability over 1558%, and toughness of 5.04 MJ/m3, alongside excellent fatigue resistance and self-healing capabilities. The hydrogel also shows high conductivity (5.09 S/m), sensitivity (GF = 1.91), and durability (over 100 cycles), enabled by conductive pathways formed by c-MWCNTs and inorganic salt electrolytes. The prepared strain sensors show a wide range of applicability and high reliability in the field of human motion monitoring, where both large movements of joint bending (including elbow, wrist and knee) and small movements such as smiling and swallowing can be accurately monitored. Moreover, it can transmit information by analyzing electrical signal changes, suggesting innovative potential for communication applications. Thus, this nanocomposite hydrogel holds great promise for health monitoring and remote communication.

Multi-Crosslinked Strong and Elastic Bioglass/Chitosan-Cysteine Hydrogels with Controlled Quercetin Delivery for Bone Tissue Engineering

Qing Min,Ronghua Tan,Yuchen Zhang,Congcong Wang,Ying Wan,Jing Li

Chitosan-cysteine (CH-CY) conjugate with an optimal content of thiol groups was synthesized and combined with amino-functionalized mesoporous bioglass (ABG) nanoparticles (NPs) with radially-porous architecture to build multi-crosslinked ABG/CH-CY composite hydrogels. Besides the network formed by self-crosslinking of thiol groups in CY-derived side chains, difunctionalized PEG (DF-P) crosslinkers with varying lengths of PEG segments were used to crosslink amino groups on CH-CY or ABG NPs to form other networks in the composite gels. Quercetin (Que) was loaded into ABG NPs before these NPs were incorporated into the hydrogel, intending to achieve sustainable and controllable Que release from so-built ABG/CH-CY gels. The lengths of PEG segments in DF-P were found to impose remarkable impacts on the strength or elasticity of multi-crosslinked ABG/CH-CY hydrogels. Some ABG/CH-CY hydrogels had their elastic modulus of around 8.2 kPa or higher along with yielding strains higher than 70%, specifying their mechanically strong and elastic characteristics. In addition, these gels showed the ability to release Que and Si or Ca ions in controllable ways for various durations. The optimally achieved ABG/CH-CY hydrogels were injectable and also able to support the growth of seeded MC3T3-E1 cells as well as the specific matrix deposition. The obtained results suggest that these ABG/CH-CY gels have promising potential for bone repair and regeneration.Keywords:multi-crosslinked hydrogel;chitosan-cysteine conjugate;amino-functionalized bioglass nanoparticles;quercetin;strength and elasticity;controllable and sustainable release
