Interface interaction-mediated design of tough and conductive MXene-composited polymer hydrogel with high stretchability and low hysteresis for high-performance multiple sensing

Wang Xinliang,Li Na,Yin Juanjuan,Wang Xiaoming,Xu Linli,Jiao Tifeng,Qin Zhihui

Conductive hydrogels based on two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, MXene, have emerged as promising materials for flexible wearable sensors. In these applications, the integration of high toughness, ultrastretchability, low hysteresis, self-adhesiveness, and multiple sensory functions into one gel is essential. However, serious issues, such as easy restacking and inevitable oxidation of MXene nanosheets in aqueous media and weak interfacial bindings between MXene and the gel network, make it almost impossible to achieve the multiple performances mentioned above. Here we present a conductive MXene-composited polymer (MCP) hydrogel by incorporating gelatin-modified MXene into polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel for the fabrication of multifunctional sensors. The presence of gelatin not only greatly improves the stability of the MXene nanosheets by forming a protective sheath, but also largely enhances the interfacial interactions between the MXene and the hydrogel network as molecular glues. Thus, the MCP hydrogel exhibits a high strength (430 kPa), remarkable stretchability (1100%), low hysteresis (<10% at 500% cyclic tensile), and excellent repeatable adhesion. The resultant MCP hydrogel-based versatile sensors display a high strain sensitivity with a broad working range (gauge factor (GF) = 8.83, up to 1000%), realizing the detection of various human motions. Moreover, the prepared sensors possess superior thermosensitive capacities (1.110/°C) for the measurement of body temperature. This strategy opens horizons to designing high-performance MXene-based hydrogels for advanced sensing platforms.

Machine learning-assisted three-dimensional fluorescence for heavy metal multi-sensing

Jiao Chen,Xiaolong Xiong,Jingru Ye,Xinjia Shuai,Jun Zhou,Qingqing Liu,Chengzhi Huang,Hui Liu

Heavy metal pollution is pervasive, complex, and diverse, causing lasting and potentially toxic effects on human health. Therefore, it is necessary to develop high-throughput detection of heavy metals. In this work, we proposed a machine learning-based three-dimensional fluorescent sensor strategy for effective detection of heavy metal pollution. Specifically, a multi-emitting fluorescent "chemical nose/tongue" sensor was first constructed with two different colored CDs and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-trimethylamino) phenyl porphyrin (TAPP) for discriminating nine heavy metals, and then the fluorescence fingerprints were obtained based on the changes in the three-dimensional fluorescence spectra influenced by various heavy metals. The results demonstrated that the sensor easily and rapidly discriminated the categories and concentrations of multiple single heavy metal ions and binary mixed heavy metal ions within the concentration range of 10 μM–0.5 mM. Subsequently, the data input way was optimized, and the results showed that the accuracy of image recognition in predicting categories and concentrations of heavy metal ions was 75.1 % and 64.4 %, and the accuracy of data recognition was 97.8 % and 100 %. After optimizing the learning model, the Random Forest (RF) model can predict the categories and concentrations of a binary heavy metal mixture with accuracies of 100 % and 91.8 %, respectively. In addition, machine learning-assisted fluorescent sensors showed promising applications in real tap water and river samples. In conclusion, compared to previous analysis methods, this approach achieved qualitative and quantitative analysis of heavy metals in complex environments through three-dimensional fluorescence spectra combined with the ML strategy. Notably, the sensor did not involve cumbersome synthesis of multiple sensing channels, making it easy to construct and cost-effective.

A cellulose-based self-healing composite eutectogel with reversibility and recyclability for multi-sensing

Ying Wang,Shiyu Fu,Lucian Amerigo Lucia,Hui Zhang

Flexible sensors have been widely applied in wearable devices recently. These devices are prone to abrasion, crack, and accidental damage, which result in function failure or even abandonment aggravating environmental degradation. Therefore, it is a huge challenge to endow the flexible sensors with self-healability, recyclability as well as high mechanical property. Herein, a novel recyclable, highly stretchable, self-healing eutectogel was fabricated by freeze-thaw of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), gelatin and dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DCMC) in a deep eutectic solvent (DES) with strain rate , humid and temperature sensing capability. The composite eutectogel consisted of imine bond and hydrogen bond reversible networks, which endowed the eutectogel with faster self-healability, as well as the green and simple recyclability. It performed satisfying tensile strength (up to ∼1.25 MPa) with unexceptionable fracture elongation (∼1400%). By leveraging the DES to inhibit freezing and dehydration, the eutectogel was fabricated with a wide working temperature (−20.9 to 64.1 °C) while its weight and sensing performance remained stable after 30 days in open air. The composite eutectogel sensor manifested reliable mechanical and electrical properties under repetitive deformation operation and sensitive responsiveness to real-time variation of rate, temperature, and humidity, which well mimics human breathing in time. Amazingly, based on the hydrolysis of the imine and hydrogen bonds, the recyclable eutectogels retained vast majority of mechanical strength , adhesion, and conductivity. Compared to most synthetic soft materials, the composite eutectogels provide a promising strategy for the development of sustainable multifunctional soft materials that have high environmental adaptability and practical applications.

Squid-inspired photonic-ionic skin with anti-freezing, drying-tolerance, and antibacterial abilities for wirelessly interactive multi-sensing

Yunpeng Wang,Huimin Zhang,Shufen Zhang,Wenbin Niu

Squid skins can actively transduce complex environmental information into bioelectrical and color-change signals. Here, inspired by squid skins, we present a novel photonic-ionic skin (PIskin) capable of outputting electrical/optical signals synergistically, featuring anti-freezing, drying-tolerance and antibacterial abilities. The PIskin was developed by hierarchical self-assembly strategy of antibacterial glycerol monolaurate (GML) in a poly-(diacetone acrylamide- co -acrylamide) gel matrix, followed by solvent displacement method of introducing PEG200 and ionic liquids (ILs). It demonstrates dual-signal reporting and intelligent identification capabilities for strain, pressure and temperature, using mechanochromism, ionic mechanotransduction and ionic thermosensitivity respectively. Furthermore, PIskin possesses long-term stability (>20 d) in ambient air and maintains high stretchablility, bright structural color and outstanding conductivity even stay at extreme conditions (-20 °C–80 °C). Notably, the GML and ILs endow the PIskin with significant antibacterial ability for Gram-positive bacteria and fungus (>99.9% antibacterial rate). Based on these remarkable capabilities, the PIskin is integrated with Bluetooth transmission system to build an interactive wearable sensor for real-time remote digital/visual feedback of joint motion and tactile sensation (such as temperature and pressure), realizing wirelessly visual multi-sensing. This investigation provides a general and enlightening design strategy for constructing high-performance interactive skins based on photonic gels, and opens up more possibilities for meeting specific requirements in practical applications of wearable flexible devices, soft intelligent robots, human–machine interfaces and so on.

Wireless, Multisensor Integrated Bioelectronics for Real-Time Monitoring and Assessment of Muscle Atrophy

Shuai Zhang,Shuo Meng,Renjie Tan,Ke Zhang,Zhuang Wang,Xiaoyun Xu,Chuanwei Zhi,Xinshuo Liang,Jinlian Hu

Real-time monitoring and evaluation of muscle atrophy are vital for efficient treatment and effective diagnosis. Although some systems have been developed to monitor loss of muscle mass or strength, they are bulky and nonspecific, cannot be applied to the body, and cannot assess the degree of muscle atrophy. Our research focuses on developing a wireless multisensor wearable system (WMWS) for on-body monitoring and assessment of atrophy, which utilizes a single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (S-TENG) and electrochemical creatinine (CREA) sensor to achieve real-time acquisition of plantar pressure and interstitial fluid (ISF) CREA concentration. In addition, LSTM (long short-term memory) and SVM (support vector machine) machine learning (ML) algorithms also prove that our multisensor strategy can effectively improve the recognition rate of different degrees of atrophy (the highest accuracy reached 92.32%). Overall, our work makes it possible to monitor and grade muscle atrophy remotely in real time.

Wearable multiple sensing platform for enhanced biomolecules monitoring in food

Junlin Ma,Yixiang Fei,Jianxin Zhang,Haixia Wu

Monitoring of biomolecules in food plays a crucial role in safeguarding human health. Prevalent biomolecule monitoring systems are constructed predominantly from rigid materials and have inherent limitations in detection capabilities. Wearable sensors have increasingly captured attention, significantly propelling the evolution of biomolecular detection process. However, most studies concentrate on the single sensing core that catalyze individual biomolecule, primarily for healthcare applications. This study introduces multiple biomolecules sensing platform based on a single-sensor core of hollow Prussian blue (h-PB), enabling efficient food detection. By utilizing varied potentials and leveraging excellent conductivity of MXene, this platform selectively and effectively tracks biomolecules including hydrogen peroxide, ascorbic acid, and glucose. Notably, the origin of electrochemical activity in this sensing system is demonstrated. This research provides a novel pathway for multi-sensing platforms design, leveraging a single catalytic core as active layer, thereby offering a promising trajectory for wearable electronics endowed with enhanced sensing capabilities.

Multifunctional tension–compression conversion sensing structure inspired by rotating stairs

Pengyang Li,Xu Zhao,Qian Yan,Jinhua Xiong,Renjie Ding,Haowen Zheng,Fuhua Xue,Zhong Chen,Zonglin Liu,He Chen,Zhigong Tang,Qingyu Peng,Xiaodong He

Developing sensors that combine sensitivity and range while detecting multiple physical stimuli is crucial for advancing human–computer interaction. To create a sensor that combines high sensitivity and wide detection range, and can respond to multiple signals, we designed a tension–compression conversion structure (TCS) inspired by the rotating stairs and used the stretchable strain sensor as the sensing unit to realize the detection of pressure and torsion signals. The performance of the multifunctional sensing structure can be designed and predicted by theoretical calculations. The variable stiffness design strategy enables the sensing structure to have satisfactory sensitivity (2.27 N −1 ) and detection range (0.003 ∼ 25.55 N). In addition, the sensing structure can detect the torsion angle within 30° and the torque within 86.4 N·mm, and can work stably in the underwater environment. This tension–compression conversion sensing structure inspired by rotating stairs will provide new ideas for developing multifunctional sensors with both sensitivity and range.

Multifunctional Hydrogel Sensor with Curved Macro Cracks: A Strategy for High Sensitivity and Wide Detection Range

Yuhan Guo,Haoyu Guo,Yuwei Han,Xi Chen,Jinyuan Liu,Meng Yang,Tongqing Lu,Junrong Luo,Ran Tao,Qingsheng Yang,Kun Jia

Multi-sensing in simple devices, but with a high sensitivity and a large detection range, is desirable for soft machines. Stretchable sensors based on the resistance changes of bulk ionic hydrogels are inherently limited by the single function and low sensitivity at small deformations. Here, a design enabled by a highly cracked hydrogel (HCHG) that is hypersensitive to tensile strain, bending, and tactile force in a wide range is proposed. The mechanism relies on the continuous sharp changes of the cross-sectional area flowing ionic current when pre-cut curved cracks are closed/opened by external load. The high fracture toughness of the hydrogel inhibits the crack propagation, making the sensing robust. By designing the crack patterns, sensitivities of 80 for 0–20% tensile strain and 0.45 kPa −1 for tactile force are achieved. Compared to the sensor made from bulk hydrogel, the sensitivities are enhanced by two and three orders of magnitude, respectively, meanwhile the detectable strain range is maintained (up to 215%). A sandwich design is also developed to distinguish elongation, compression, and bending. Applications of HCHG sensors in manipulating a robotic arm and nondestructive grasping an even softer object by a soft gripper are demonstrated.

Wireless Human–Machine Interface Based on Artificial Bionic Skin with Damage Reconfiguration and Multisensing Capabilities

Yanting Gong,Yi-Zhou Zhang,Shiqiang Fang,Yadong Sun,Jian Niu,Wen-Yong Lai

Human–machine interfaces (HMIs) enable users to interact with machines, thus playing a significant role in artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the metaverse. Conventional HMIs are based on bulky and rigid electronic devices, seriously limiting their ductility, damage reconfiguration, and multifunctionality. In terms of replacing conventional HMIs, artificial bionic skins with good ductility, self-reparation, and multisensory ability are promising candidates. Still, they in their present form require innovations in mechanical and sensory properties, especially damage recovery and environmental stability, which seriously affect the service life and result in tons of electric waste. Herein, we present a new type of artificial bionic skin with excellent mechanical performance (>13,000% strain), high environmental stability (−80 to 80 °C), and multiple sensory properties toward strain, stress, temperature, solvent, and bioelectricity. Besides, this new type of artificial bionic skin also exhibits effective reconfiguration ability after damage and recyclability. The as-prepared artificial bionic skin was used as an interactive HMI to collect and distinguish the different sensory stimuli. The electronics assembled by HMI with artificial bionic skin can adhere compliantly on the human body for wireless motion capturing and sensing via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and the Internet. With simple programming, complex human motions can be mimicked in real-time by robots.

Mechanically robust, degradable and conductive MXene-composited gelatin organohydrogel with environmental stability and self-adhesiveness for multifunctional sensor

Xiaoming Wang,Xinliang Wang,Juanjuan Yin,Na Li,Zhenlin Zhang,Yawen Xu,Lexin Zhang,Zhihui Qin,Tifeng Jiao

MXene-based conductive hydrogels have attracted immense interest as sensing materials for flexible wearable sensors due to their mechanical flexibility and high sensitivity. However, the low stability of MXene in aqueous media severely deteriorates the performances of MXene-based conductive hydrogels. Meanwhile, for their applications in advanced sensors, high mechanical strength , good environmental stability, self-adhesiveness, multiple sensory function combined with biodegradability are vital but can be rarely met in one platform. Herein, we first prepare stable MXene/gelatin dispersion by encapsulating MXene with gelatin to hinder restacking and oxidation of MXene nanosheets in water. Based on the MXene/gelatin dispersion, a high-strength and conductive MXene-composited gelatin (MCG) organohydrogel with excellent environmental stability and self-adhesiveness is fabricated by simply soaking the MCG pre-hydrogel in tannic acid (TA) water/glycerol solution. This design allows the formation of both multiple supramolecular crosslinked interactions and water/glycerol binary solvent system. The prepared MCG organohydrogel derived from natural constituents exhibits outstanding mechanical properties (such as high tensile strength and stretchability), excellent freezing resistance, moisturizing retention properties and self-adhesiveness, yet degrades fully when disposed. The resultant MCG hydrogel-based versatile sensors exhibit both high strain-sensitivity and thermosensitive capacities, realizing the application in the measurement of human motion and body temperature, providing a promising route to fabricate degradable sensing materials combined with all the favourable attributes for advanced electronics.

Multi-sensorized pneumatic artificial muscle yarns

Chiyu Fu,Kai Wang,Wenyang Tang,Azadeh Nilghaz,Christopher Hurren,Xungai Wang,Weilin Xu,Bin Su,Zhigang Xia

Soft actuators, particularly pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs), have been widely applied to construct soft robotics owing to their superiorities of inherent compliance, lightweight, and high force density. However, it is still challenging to endow the PAMs with sensing capabilities towards unknown and complex environments due to their compliant mechanism and system. Herein, inspired by the skeletal muscle and skin, a novel multi-sensorized pneumatic artificial muscle yarn (mPAMy) is fabricated for multimodal proprioceptive sensing by a combination of textile braiding technology and hierarchical manufacturing method. The results and finite-element analysis reveal that the soft mPAMy have the endowed sensing capabilities towards diverse forces, including self-contraction, strain and vertical pressure. The mPAMy can detect force changes ranged from 0 N to 14 N by the yarn relative resistance change from 0 to 14.0%. Contractile sensing exhibits an increased range of resistance change (0–20.1%) compared with force sensing (0–14.0%), resulting in a greater resolution of 0.34% pressure to present change in resistance. In addition, the strain of mPAMy ranged from 0 to 57% can be stably detected. The excellent and durability pressure sensing merits of mPAMy can be ascribed from the change in resistance due to the PPy layer fracture. Furthermore, in several proof-of-concept attempts, the prepared mPAMy successfully detected precise signals of human motion and provided effective feedback during actuation. This approach opens a reliable strategy for PAMs towards multimodal sensing strategies in the healthcare, transportation and wearable electronics.
