Tunicate cellulose nanocrystal reinforced multifunctional hydrogel with super flexible, fatigue resistant, antifouling and self-adhesive capability for effective wound healing

Yijie Liu,Yujie Zhang,Qin Yang,Zhongrui Yu,Mingtao He,Yifei Zhu,Xin Fu,Fanjun Meng,Qinglin Ma,Lingming Kong,Shihui Pan,Yuju Che

Hydrogels as skin wound dressings have been extensively studied owing to their good flexibility and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the mechanical performance, adhesive capability, antifouling and antibacterial properties of conventional hydrogels are still unsatisfactory, which hinder the application of hydrogel for cutaneous healing. Here, we developed a novel biocompatible multifunctional hydrogel with super flexible, fatigue resistant, antifouling and self-adhesive capability for effective wound healing, where naturally rigid polymers including quaternized chitosan (QCS) and Tunicate cellulose nanocrystals (TCNCs) are used as bioactive cross-linkers and reinforcers to endow the hydrogel with excellent mechanical and antibacterial property, and the synergistic contributions from the poly(acrylic acid/methacrylate anhydride dopamine/sulfobetaine methacrylate) (poly(AA/DMA/SBMA)) chains and QCS endow the hydrogel with excellent adhesive property, antioxidant, antifouling and pH-responsive sustained drug release capabilities. The optimized hydrogel exhibited high tensile strength (77.69 KPa), large tensile strain (889.9 %), large toughness (307.51KJ.m −3 ), high adhesive strength (35.57 KPa) and ideal compressive property. The in vivo infected full-thickness skin model demonstrated that the hydrogel with vanvomycin sustained release ability efficiently improved the granulation tissue formation, facilitating collagen deposition and reducing inflammatory expression, thus effectively accelerating wound healing. This superiorly skin-adhesive antibacterial biocompatible hydrogel appears to be a promising candidate for wound therapy.

Xingkui Guo,Songlin Zhang,Shubham Patel,Xiaolu Sun,You-Liang Zhu,Zechang Wei,Rongguo Wang,Xiaodong He,Zuankai Wang,Cunjiang Yu,Swee Ching Tan

Artificial skin is essential for bionic robotics, facilitating human skin–like functions such as sensation, communication, and protection. However, replicating a skin-matched all-in-one material with excellent mechanical properties, self-healing, adhesion, and multimodal sensing remains a challenge. Herein, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel by establishing a consolidated organic/metal bismuth ion architecture (COMBIA). Benefiting from hierarchical reversible noncovalent interactions, the COMBIA hydrogel exhibits an optimal combination of mechanical and functional properties, particularly its integrated mechanical properties, including unprecedented stretchability, fracture toughness, and resilience. Furthermore, these hydrogels demonstrate superior conductivity, optical transparency, freezing tolerance, adhesion capability, and spontaneous mechanical and electrical self-healing. These unified functions render our hydrogel exceptional properties such as shape adaptability, skin-like perception, and energy harvesting capabilities. To demonstrate its potential applications, an artificial skin using our COMBIA hydrogel was configured for stimulus signal recording, which, as a promising soft electronics platform, could be used for next-generation human-machine interfaces.

Multi-Functional Hydrogels Simultaneously Featuring Strong Fluorescence, Ultralong Phosphorescence, and Excellent Self-Healing Properties and Their Use for Advanced Anti-counterfeiting

Xin Jiang,Menglin Wu,Lu Zhang,Jingyang Wang,Mingyue Cui,Jinhua Wang,Xueke Pang,Bin Song,Yao He

Herein, we present a class of multi-functional hydrogels, which simultaneously features strong fluorescence, ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), and excellent self-healing properties. In particular, the as-prepared hydrogels could produce strong fluorescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) value of 22.4%, as well as ultralong RTP (lasts for ∼20 s with phosphorescence lifetime of ∼264 ms). In addition to the superior optical performance, the as-prepared hydrogels possess excellent self-healing property, with ∼91.5% self-healing efficiency at room temperature and an increased elasticity of ∼281%. Taking advantages of these unique merits, we further exploit such high-performance hydrogels for advanced anti-counterfeiting applications. Significantly, the hydrogel-based anti-counterfeiting tags are capable of realizing multi-color static information in the spatial scale and more than five kinds of dynamic information during 15 s of the phosphorescence decay process in the temporal scale.

Stretchable, tough, self-healing, antifreezing, and multifunctional nanocellulose-based hydrogel for wearable monitoring of human motion

Kejin Yu,Lina Yang,Siyu Zhang,Ning Zhang,He Liu

Hydrogels are among the most promising flexible sensing materials, exhibiting extensive applications in wearable devices, human health monitoring, robotics, etc. Currently, hydrogels that are stretchable, self-healing, antifreezing, and conductive have become the focus of research on wearable sensors. However, integrating high tensile strength, self-healing, frost resistance, and satisfactory mechanical properties into a conductive hydrogel remains challenging. Herein, soy hull nanocellulose, graphene oxide, and CaCl 2 were integrated into a polyvinyl alcohol–chitosan framework through green physical-crosslinking and ionic-crosslinking methods to build a porous three-dimensional network structure and develop a strong, tough, self-healing, antifreezing, and multifunctional hydrogel. This hydrogel benefits from abundant hydrogen, ester, and metal coordination bonds and electrostatic interactions, which contribute to its exceptional tensile strength (709.48 %), viscoelasticity (1081.71 kPa), mechanical strength (tensile strength = 4.91 MPa and compressive strength = 5.11 MPa), conductivity (5.11 S/m), and frost resistance (−35 ℃). Moreover, it exhibits high sensitivity with a measurement factor of 7.14 and maintains impressive electrical stability after 800 cycles of stretching at room temperature (25 ℃) and a low temperature (−35 ℃). Further, this hydrogel is used for applications such as human limb bending and heart rate monitoring. Overall, this research offers a promising approach for developing sustainable and multifunctional hydrogels as well as provides notable insights with regard to flexible wearable sensors.

A Multifunctional Hydrogel for Infected Chronic Wounds Management: Integrated pH Sensing, Photothermal Therapy, and Ion Release

Ziqi Zhou,Liyan Zhang,Muyan Qin,Xu Cui,Deping Wang

Chronic wound healing is often compromised by bacterial infection, and wound pH changes strongly correlate with infection. Therefore, the development of wound dressings capable of real-time pH monitoring, antimicrobial activity, and tissue repair is crucial for the effective management of infected chronic wounds. This study reports a novel multifunctional composite hydrogel (GM-C-mBG@P) synthesized by incorporating microwave-synthesized carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and polydopamine-modified mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (mBG@P) into modified gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA). The incorporated polydopamine (PDA) confers excellent photothermal properties to the hydrogel, enabling effective antimicrobial activity. Under 360 nm UV excitation, the fluorescence intensity of CQDs in GM-C-mBG@P exhibits a strong linear correlation with pH, enabling real-time wound pH monitoring. Furthermore, mBG@P can gradually dissolve calcium, silicon, boron, and other functional ions to enhance the bioactivity and functionality of the hydrogel and accelerate wound healing. These findings suggest that the GM-C-mBG@P hydrogel has the potential to serve as a promising wound dressing for the treatment of infected chronic wounds.

Temperature-Sensitive Anti-Inflammatory Organohydrogels Containing Janus Particle Stabilized Phase-Change Microinclusions

Haoguan Gui,Tiantian Yang,Li-Li Li,Fuxin Liang,Zhenzhong Yang

A fabrication strategy for multifunctional organohydrogels is proposed, which combines phase-change microinclusions within a double-network (DN) hydrogel under the stabilization of Janus particles. Janus particles possess reactivity and colloidal stability for more robust organohydrogels, while the interstice among Janus particles enhances the mass transfer between the phase interfaces. Moreover, DN hydrogels are achieved through dynamic cross-linking networks, endowing organohydrogels with injectability and self-healing performance. Phase-change microinclusions are beneficial to the organohydrogels with temperature-responsive mechanical property and temperature-programed shape-memory performance. Organohydrogels can be employed for temperature therapy through the melting-crystallization process of phase-change microinclusions. Simultaneously, the payloads within microinclusions can be released for antibacteria upon melting the encapsulated wax. The organohydrogels can be served as an ideal dressing with temperature-responsive mechanical property, temperature therapy effectiveness, and temperature-triggered antibacterial ability.

Multifunctional Organohydrogel with Ultralow-Hysteresis, Ultrafast-Response, and Whole-Strain-Range Linearity for Self-Powered Sensors

Jian Zou,Xin Jing,Zhuo Chen,Sheng-Ji Wang,Xiang-Shu Hu,Pei-Yong Feng,Yue-Jun Liu

The conductive hydrogels always suffered from high internal friction, large hysteresis, and low capability of accurately predicting physical deformation, which seriously restricted their application in smart wearable devices. To address these problems, solvent molecules are directionally inserted into the polymer molecule chains via bridge effect to effectively reduce the molecular internal friction. Moreover, swelling is also combined to eliminate the temporary entanglements in the hydrogel system. The cooperation between the bridge and swollen effect endows the prepared polyacrylamide (PAM)/laponite/H 3 BO 3 /ethylene glycol (Eg) organohydrogel (PLBOH) ultralow hysteresis (1.38%, ε = 100%), ultrafast response (≈10 ms), and high linearity in the whole-strain-range ( R 2 = 0.996) with a great sensitivity ( GF = 2.68 at the strain range of 0–750%). Meanwhile, the prepared PL 10 B 30 OH exhibits long-term stability, excellent stretchability, and low dissipated energy. Furthermore, the assembled triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) displays an outstanding energy harvesting performance with an output voltage of 200 V with the size of 20 mm × 20 mm. The assembled strain sensors can monitor the small strain of facial expressions and large strain of human movements, indicating the tremendous applications in self-powered intelligent and flexible wearable electronics under harsh environmental conditions.

Stretchable multifunctional hydrogels for sensing electronics with effective EMI shielding properties

Mingming Hao,Yongfeng Wang,Lianhui Li,Qifeng Lu,Fuqin Sun,Lili Li,Xianqing Yang,Yue Li,Mengyuan Liu,Sijia Feng,Simin Feng,Ting Zhang

Hydrogel-based soft and stretchable materials with skin/tissue-like mechanical properties provide new avenues for the design and fabrication of wearable sensors. However, synthesizing multifunctional hydrogels that simultaneously possess excellent mechanical, electrical and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness is still a great challenge. In this work, the freeze-casting method is employed to fabricate a multifunctional hydrogel by filling Fe3O4 clusters into poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite aqueous solution. The hydrogel possesses superior electrical and mechanical properties as well as great electromagnetic wave shielding properties. Benefiting from the high stretchability (∼904.5%) and fast sensing performance (response time ∼9 ms and self-recovery time ∼12 ms within the strain range ∼100%), the monitoring of human activities and manipulation of a remote-controlled toy car using the hydrogel-based stretchable strain sensors are successfully demonstrated. In addition, a great EMI shielding effectiveness with more than 46 dB in the frequencies of 8–12.5 GHz can be obtained, which provides an alternative strategy for designing next-generation EMI shielding materials. These results indicate that the multifunctional hydrogels can be used as flexible and stretchable sensing electronics requiring effective EMI shielding.

Multifunctional double network hydrogel with multi-directional actuation and high-precision sensing

Yuerui Li,Liang Liu,Chunxia Zhao,Min Guo,Yuanpeng Wu,Siyu Chen,Jinbo Cheng,Dong Xiang,Hui Li,Li Wang

Conductive hydrogels have gained great attention for applications in flexible electronics, electronic skins, and as human-machine interfaces. However, poor environmental tolerance of traditional hydrogels and defects in hydrogel actuator make them unfit for use in certain environments. Herein, a small natural molecule, proline (ZP), was introduced into the PAA/CS dual network system to prepare multifunctional hydrogel materials with high concentration of physically crosslinked metal coordination points. The elongation at break and mechanical strength of the hydrogel with optimized structure were 1277 % and 202 kPa, respectively. The effect of ZP on the destruction of hydrogen bonds of free water in the hydrogel provided the hydrogel with excellent temperature resistance. Multiple reversible interactions endowed the PAA/CS/Al 0.5 /ZP 8 hydrogel with excellent self-healing properties at room temperature and even at −40 ℃. The PAA/CS/Al 0.5 /ZP 8 hydrogel sensor with excellent comprehensive performance could be applied for the monitoring of a variety of human motions, small shape changes of flexible objects, and detection of vibrations in rigid pipes. The interactions between Fe 3+ , ascorbic acid, and -COOH groups on the hydrogel surface were used to record information and erase it repeatedly at low temperature and showed excellent shape memory. Based on the self-healing property, the hydrogel with gradients of swelling rates and water loss rates was assembled into a double-layer actuator, which could complete the actuation process in opposite directions in air and also underwater. This work provides a new idea for the design of soft robots and intelligent switches.

ZnCur nanoparticle-enhanced multifunctional hydrogel platform: Synergistic antibacterial and immunoregulatory effects for infected diabetic wound healing

Yan-Wen Ding,Zhi-Wei Zhang,Xin-Yu Cui,Rui-Yang Hu,Yang Li,Si-Da Huang,Si-Qi Du,Jin-Wei Dao,Dai-Xu Wei

Treating diabetic wounds poses significant challenges due to the complex wound microenvironment, including bacterial infection, oxidative stress, inflammation, and impaired angiogenesis. We developed a novel curcumin nanoparticle formulation (ZnCur NPs) with excellent water dispersibility and stability, showcasing strong antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. By encapsulating these ZnCur NPs along with RL-QN15 short peptides (with the function of promoting tissue repair and angiogenesis) into a hydrogel (CSA-OHAMA hydrogel, CO) based on chitosan and hyaluronic acid, we created a multifunctional hydrogel platform (Z/P/CO) that integrates antibacterial and immune-modulating functions. The Z/P/CO hydrogels are self-healing and adhesive, adapting to wound shapes while providing a protective barrier that minimizes bacterial invasion and maintains a moist environment. They effectively deliver ZnCur NPs and RL-QN15 peptides, enhancing antibacterial action and reshaping the adverse wound microenvironment. In vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that Z/P/CO significantly reduced inflammation, promoted angiogenesis, and facilitated collagen deposition, accelerating the healing of infected diabetic wounds within 17 days. This integrated hydrogel platform offers a promising strategy and effective method for treating diabetic wounds by reshaping the immune microenvironment.

Environmentally adaptive and durable hydrogels toward multi-sensory application

Youyou Chen,Chen Zhang,Rui Yin,Ao Yin,Qiang Feng,Feihua Liu,Jian Shao,Tong Su,Haoran Wang,Guoqing Chen,Weiwei Zhao

Ionic conductive hydrogels are emerging materials applied in flexible electronics due to their integrated conductivity and mechanical flexibility. However, daunting challenges still remain in developing ionic hydrogels with desirable conductivity and mechanical properties in harsh environments. Herein, a series of environmentally adaptive multifunctional hydrogels were synthesized by the in situ polymerization of polyzwitterions in the presence of inorganic nanoclays and LiCl. Their intrinsic and synergetic features rendered the hydrogels excellent environmental adaptivity. They not only displayed superior stretchability (up to 2167%) and considerable conductivity (17.1 mS cm −1 ) at atmospheric conditions, but also maintained robust electromechanical properties under extreme environments (-60–95 °C, or under vacuum). Moreover, their strong adhesion strength (up to 0.28 MPa on glass), autonomous self-healing capacity (up to 90% recovery efficiency), outstanding injectability and 3D printability enabled them as promising candidates for all-temperature wearable devices. The assembled hydrogel sensors exhibited exceptional multi-sensory capabilities, including strain (1–500%), pressure (0.5–50 kPa), temperature (-20–95 °C), and proximity (0–160 mm). They also functioned reliably at bending tests from −40 to 80 °C, and showed outstanding durability over 10 000 uninterrupted cycles (upon 50% strain and 20 kPa pressure, respectively). The overall merits of the hydrogels provide new insights towards next-generation flexible electronics for healthcare monitoring, human–machine interfaces, and biomedical prostheses.

Tri-state recyclable multifunctional hydrogel for flexible sensors

Ruonan Liu,He Liu,Tong Lyu,Kun Chen,Zhaoyang Wang,Ye Tian

Recent developments in hydrogel functional materials have created opportunities for building flexible sensors with multiple kinetic properties. Despite this, the research of multifunctional hydrogels for sensor applications is still a challenge. Herein, we present a recyclable multifunctional hydrogel synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), glycerin, and borax with three different states (named PHG, PHG-F, and PHG-S, respectively). Among them, PHG hydrogels have unique transparency, plasticity, self-healing, injectability, electrical conductivity and thermal sensitivity, and can be used to detect temperature changes with high accuracy and fast response. PHG-F hydrogels are obtained by cryogenic freezing of PHG hydrogels, which have strong mechanical properties and toughness (up to 0.66 MPa) and can provide excellent performance for human motion monitoring applications. PHG-S hydrogels, obtained by swelling of dried PHG hydrogels, have stronger mechanical properties and toughness (up to 1.31 MPa), and high conductivity (up to 2.3 S m −1 ) obtained by immersion in ionic salt solutions, making them very suitable for strain sensing. The tri-state and recyclable multifunctional hydrogels we developed might even prove useful for practical/smart materials, wearable devices, soft machines, and biomedical uses.
