Study of deposition characteristics of multi-nozzle near-field electrospinning in electric field crossover interference conditions

Han Wang,Minhao Li,Xin Chen,Junwei Zheng,Xindu Chen,Ziming Zhu

Nanostructured components have been receiving considerable attention in recent years. One advantage is the use of near-field electrospinning (NFES) in microdevice manufacture. Multi-nozzle NFES is offered as a technique to increase the high-precision production rate of components. The deposition characteristics of the multi-nozzles were observed and analyzed based on the mutual influence of the jets under varied conditions. It was discovered that the mutual distance of deposition becomes larger with increases in working distance and nozzle spacing, but the influence of voltage is not particularly apparent. This paper discusses the results and conclusions of the experimental investigation and theoretical derivation.

Research on Multinozzle Near-Field Electrospinning Patterned Deposition

Han Wang,Shenneng Huang,Feng Liang,Peixuan Wu,Minhao Li,Sen Lin,Xindu Chen

Multinozzle electrospinning systems are designed to increase productivity, while near-field electrospinning (NFES) systems are designed to deposit solid nanofibers in a direct, continuous, and controllable manner. In this paper, several multinozzle NFES setups are tested. The experiment reveals that the deposition distance becomes larger when working distance and needle spacing increase, and the influence of voltage is relatively weaker. The deposition of double nozzle NFES has been studied with Coulomb’s law and theoretical derivation has been verified by the experimental conclusion. The experiment result and theoretical derivation are helpful to get different distance of direct-written fibers by adjusting working distance or needle spacing to change distance of fibers largely and adjusting voltage to change distance slowly. Through these efforts, it is convenient to adjust the distance of straight fibers in multinozzle system.

Research on Electric Field Homogenization in Radial Multi-Nozzle Electrospinning

Jian Liu,Shoujun Dong,Chenghao Wang,Yanbo Liu,Shanshan Pan,Zhaosong Yin

Electrospinning is an effective method to prepare nanofibers at present. Aiming at problems such as low spinnable viscosity and the low productivity of the traditional multi-needle, a radial nozzle was proposed in this paper. In order to solve the problem of end effects in multi-nozzle electrospinning, COMSOL Multiphysics 6.0 software was used to simulate the electric field in electrospinning with seven radial nozzles. And the influence on the electric field intensity and distribution of the structural parameters of the radial nozzle, including the number, length, tip-shape, and tip-pointing direction of the vanes, were studied. Then, the electric field intensity of any point on the central axis of a radial nozzle was obtained based on the principle of electric field superposition, and then the rotation angle of the vanes corresponding to the minimum Coulomb repulsion force on the target point was deduced. At last, the method of electric field homogenization of a rotating vane arrangement was obtained. In the simulation, the strength and homogenization of the electric field were taken as the research objective, and the optimum structure parameters of the radial nozzle were obtained; the uniform theory of the electric field based on the orientation of the vanes was verified. Then, electrospinning with seven radial nozzles was performed, and it was found that each radial nozzle can produce multiple jets during electrospinning, and the prepared electrospun membranes have even thickness and high porosity. What is more, the fibers are relatively finer and more uniform.

3D multi-nozzle system with dual drives highly potential for 3D complex scaffolds with multi-biomaterials

Chen Zhichao,Zhang Xianglin,Chen Penghua,Li Wenchao,Zhou Kui,Shi Lei,Liu Kang,Liu Changqing

Recently, additive manufacturing is one of the most focused research topics due to its explosive development, especially in manufacturing engineering and medical science. In order to build 3D complex scaffolds with multi-biomaterials for clinical application, a new 3D multi-nozzle system with dual-mode drives, i.e. ejection and extrusion was developed. In this paper, much effort was made to gain fine control of droplet and excellent coordination during fabrication. Specifically, the parameters that influence the size and stability of droplet most was intensively studied. Considering that the biomaterials used in the future may have much difference in properties, the combination of parameters was investigated to facilitate the settings for certain-sized droplets, which are potentially eligible for bio-printing. The dispensing nozzles can work well both in independent and convergent mode, which can be freely switched. Outstanding to the most currently used 3D bio-printing techniques, this system can fabricate scaffolds with multimaterials of both low viscosity (by pneumatic dispensing) and high viscosity (through motor extrusion). It is highly expected that this system can satisfy clinical application in the near future.

Lattice-filler dual-gradient and hierarchical porous architectures customized by multiple-nozzle 3D printing towards excellent absorption-dominant electromagnetic interference shielding

Junfei Zhang,Lingjun Zeng,Xixia Liu,Dabin Zhang,Ang Gao,Bai Xue,Qiang Zheng,Yixiong Feng,Lan Xie

Exploiting high-performance absorption-dominant electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites is ungently desired yet challenging for minimizing the secondary electromagnetic radiation pollution. Herein, lattice-filler dual-gradient Fe 3 O 4 /carbon nanotube/polyurethane&MXene (Fe 3 O 4 /CNT/PU&MXene; DGFCP&M) composite frames with a positive gradient of functional filler and a negative gradient of lattice size were successfully fabricated by a powerful multiple-nozzle immersion-precipitation 3D printing (ip3DP) technology. The insulative top layer of DGFCP&M frames with larger lattice pores plays a role as an impedance matching layer to mitigate the reflection of electromagnetic wave (EMW). Nevertheless, the highly conductive bottom layer of MXene with non-lattice structure acts as a reflective layer to reflect EMW back to the interior of DGFCP&M frames. Moreover, hierarchical porous structures (lattice macropores and filament micropores) can prolong the transmitting path to enhance the attention of EMW energy. In consequence, excellent SE T of 72.7 dB and A of 0.62 are achieved for DGFCP&M-8 composite frame at EMW incident from top surface, both of which are superior to those of homogenous and single-gradient composite frames. Furthermore, visual simulations intuitively verify that the lattice-filler dual-gradient composite frame has an excellent absorption-dominant EMI shielding performance. The construction of lattice-filler dual-gradient architectures based on multiple-nozzle ip3DP provides a valuable insight into the fabrication and adjustment of absorption-dominant EMI shielding composites for the promising application in next-generation flexible and portable electronic devices.

Controllable deposition distance of aligned pattern via dual-nozzle near-field electrospinning

Wang Zhifeng,Chen Xindu,Zeng Jun,Liang Feng,Wu Peixuan,Wang Han

For large area micro/nano pattern printing, multi-nozzle electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing setup is an efficient method to boost productivity in near-field electrospinning (NFES) process. And controlling EHD multi-jet accurate deposition under the interaction of nozzles and other parameters are crucial concerns during the process. The influence and sensitivity of various parameters such as the needle length, needle spacing, electrode-to-collector distance, voltage etc. on the direct-write patterning performance was investigated by orthogonal experiments with dual-nozzle NFES setup, and then the deposition distance estimated based on a novel model was compared with measurement results and proven. More controllable deposition distance and much denser of aligned naofiber can be achieved by rotating the dual-nozzle setup. This study can be greatly contributed to estimate the deposition distance and helpful to guide the multi-nozzle NFES process to accurate direct-write pattern in manufacturing process in future.

Two-Photon Direct Laser Writing of Capillary-Coupled Nanosprayer Arrays for ESI-MS

Likai Xing,Daoxue Liu,Haohan Yu,Haibo Ding,Jie Sun,Guozhen Wang,Yuanyuan Deng,Wenya Chang,Zhuoying Xie

Electrospray is a widely recognized physical process and has various applications, such as in electrospinning, space propulsion, and mass spectrometry (MS). Particularly, electrospray emitters are integral to the exceptional performance of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). This study introduced a novel method for fabricating electrospray emitters using two-photon direct laser writing, resulting in the printing of nanosprayer arrays directly onto capillary tips. Utilizing a novel acrylic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane photoresist, a multinozzle sprayer with micrometer scale channels was designed and printed on a capillary that is compatible with both frontend liquid chromatography and typical MS inlets. The 3D-printed sprayers demonstrated exceptional resistance to organic corrosion and high temperatures. For the nanosprayer arrays, an increase in the total electrospray current was achieved by augmenting the number of electrosprays, while maintaining a constant liquid flow rate and voltage. Notably, the eight-nozzle sprayers exhibited a 2.7-fold enhancement in sensitivity as compared with single-nozzle sprayers. This approach offers a versatile and high-sensitivity nanoelectrospray solution for ESI-MS.

Microfluidic Bubble-Templating Multinozzle 3D Printing for Preparations of Macroporous Hydrogels with Ordered Pores of Large Size Ranges

Mingyang Su,Xiaobo Song,Nanyang Zhao,Zhongbin Xu,Xing Huang

A strategy for fabrication of macroporous hydrogels through 3D printing assisted by molding and multiple microfluidic bubble-templating nozzles is proposed here. This approach aims to address the challenges faced by methods for 3D printing macroporous hydrogels, such as difficulties in precisely controlling the spatial distribution of macropores, limited porosity, and low resolution of external boundaries due to the poor mechanical properties of hydrogel solutions as printing ink. In this method, fast-switching microfluidic bubble-templating nozzles of varying sizes allowed for precise control of target pore sizes over a wide range. Cavities of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molds were used to define the overall external shape of the hydrogels and enhance the resolution of the boundaries. During the printing process, the laminar shear force generated by a coaxial microfluidic system generated microbubbles which were then injected into the PDMS mold cavities. The spatial distribution of the microbubble clusters within the cavities was controlled by a 3D motion module. Finally, macroporous hydrogels with a pore size range of 238–930 μm were fabricated while avoiding millimeter round corners on the boundaries. A control precision of pore sizes was about 60 μm. Most importantly, this strategy broke through the space occupancy limitations of pores in traditional 3D printing methods for macroporous hydrogels. The space occupancy of pores could reach a maximum of about 87% within a single layer.

Programmable Deformations of Biomimetic Composite Hydrogels Embedded with Printed Fibers

Si Yu Zheng,Chen Yu Li,Miao Du,Jun Yin,Jin Qian,Zi Liang Wu,Qiang Zheng

Shape deformations are prevalent in nature, which are closely related to the heterogeneous structures with a feature of fibrous elements embedded in a matrix. The microfibers with specific orientations act as either passive geometrical constraints in an active matrix or active elements in a passive matrix, which generate programmed internal stresses and drive shape morphing under external stimuli. Morphing materials can be designed in a biomimetic way, yet it is challenging to fabricate composite hydrogels with well-distributed fibers by a facile strategy. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of microfiber-embedded hydrogels facilitated by the extrusion-based printing technology. Programmed deformations are achieved in these hydrogels with microfibers distributed in the upper and/or bottom layers of the gel matrix. Under external stimuli, the microfibers and the gel matrix have different responses that produce internal stresses and result in programmable deformations of the composite gel. Multiple shape transformations are realized in the hydrogel by embedding multiple types of responsive microfibers in the passive or active matrix, which is fabricated with the assistance of multinozzle printing. A soft hook is designed to show the capacity of the composite hydrogel to hold and move an object in a saline solution. This facile and versatile strategy provides an alternative way to prepare biomimetic hydrogels with potential applications in biomedical devices, flexible electronics, and soft robots.

Preparation of single-ion conductor solid polymer electrolyte by multi-nozzle electrospinning process for lithium-ion batteries

Texiong Hu,Xiu Shen,Longqing Peng,Yizheng Liu,Xin Wang,Haoshen Ma,Peng Zhang,Jinbao Zhao

In this work, a method for preparing solid polymer electrolytes with function of single ion conduction (SICs-SPEs) is developed and reported. A solid state ionic conduction path with three-dimensional interpenetrating network was constructed by multi-nozzle electrospinning technology and a followed hot pressed treatment. Here, two components of SICs-SPEs were chosen where one component is a single ion conducting lithium salt with polyanion structure, and the other component is a solid polymer electrolyte matrix with the function of conducting lithium ions in solid state. This stable three-dimensional interpenetrating network structure is beneficial to inhibit the separation of the two components. At the same time, the introduction of hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica (SiO 2 ) reduces the crystallinity of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and promotes the dissociation of lithium ions, respectively, thereby the ionic conductivity of the prepared single-ion conductor solid polymer electrolyte can be increased to 5.4 × 10 −5  S cm −1 at 60 °C, and the lithium-ion transference number (t Li+ ) can be increased to 0.96. This method can also adjust the performance of the solid state polymer electrolyte through balancing the ration of composition by controlling the number of spinning nozzle. It provides a practical way to develop functional solid polymer electrolyte by electrospinning technology with nozzle design.
