Enhancing proton conductivity of proton exchange membrane with SPES nanofibers containing porous organic cage

Xianlin Xu,Zhufeng Shao,Lei Shi,Bowen Cheng,Xuan Yin,Xupin Zhuang,Youbo Di

Effective proton conducting sites and establishing proton channels are two critical factors in developing high-performance proton exchange membranes. This study first establishes a strategy in designing effective proton conducting channels for Nafion by using solution blowing of sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) nanofibers containing CC3, which is an emerging porous organic cage that possesses the advantages of dissolvable organic solvents and high proton conduction from its interconnected three-dimensional pore structure. Our strategy results in SPES nanofiber networks with CC3 uniformly involved in and composite membranes with Nafion-filled interfiber voids. Benefiting from such structural features, the composite membrane exhibits high proton conductivity (0.315 S cm −1 at 80°C and 100% RH), low methanol permeability (0.69 × 10 −7 cm 2 S −1 ), excellent water absorption, thermal and dimensional stability, and single-cell performance. This study provides not only a valuable reference for the application of CC3 but also a new idea for establishment of proton transfer channels.

Amino-Functionalized Porous Organic Cages Assembled Pebax Mixed Matrix Membranes for Enhanced CO2/N2 Separation

Yanling Liu,Xiao Peng,Yuan Li,Fei Wang,Xue Ai,Yuxi Huang,Xin Sun,Jie Zhao,Kai Li

Membrane separation technology has garnered significant attention for CO2 separation and purification, with mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) emerging as promising candidates due to their advantages of ease of processing, high mechanical strength, and thermal stability. The development of effective fillers for separation performance becomes one of the key foci in this area. In this work, CC3, a type of porous organic cages (POCs), was synthesized and functionalized with two amino-containing materials of different chain lengths. Polyethylenimine (PEI) and diethylenetriamine were used as modification agents to successfully graft amino groups onto the CC3 crystals to form defect-free Pebax mixed matrix membranes containing amino-functionalized CC3. The special porous structure of CC3 increases the gas permeability of the mixed matrix membrane by providing extra channels for the transportation of CO2. Besides, amino groups on functionalized CC3 interact with the chains of Pebax through hydrogen bonding, thus improving the compatibility between filler and matrix. The amino groups can further facilitate the transport of gases across the membrane through reversible reactions with CO2, which is further enhanced under humid conditions. Under optimal conditions, at 1 bar and 30 °C, the CO2 permeability of Pebax/PEI@CC3-MMMs was 342.33 Barrer with a selectivity of 33.38, while Pebax/DETA@CC3-MMMs exhibited a CO2 permeability of 273.34 Barrer and a selectivity of 35.77. This work demonstrates that amino-functionalized POCs (CC3) can effectively enhance the CO2 permeability and the CO2/N2 selectivity, which may provide a way to develop high-performance mixed matrix membranes with superior separation properties.

Loose nanofiltration membrane constructed via interfacial polymerization using porous organic cage RCC3 for dye/salt separation

Anan Zhao,Min Zhang,Yuemei Bao,Lingfeng Zhao,Guanhua Liu,Yanjun Jiang,Peng Zhang,Xingzhong Cao

Fabricating loose membranes with well-tailored porosity for effective molecular separations remains challenging. Here, we introduce RCC3, a soluble porous organic cage (POC), as an amine monomer to fabricate polyamide (PA) membrane with loose structure via interfacial polymerization and evaluate the membrane performance in dye/salt separation. RCC3 is a [4 + 6] amine molecular cage with ideal stability and sub-nanometer macrocyclic cavity (∼7 Å). The intrinsic porosity and large interchain pores formed by its participation in interfacial polymerization provide extra transport channels in membrane and contribute to realizing precise aperture sieving with high permeation flux. Meanwhile, the unique structure of RCC3 (molecular-level size, organic framework and rich –NH– groups) helps to achieve molecular-level mixing between polymer chains and individual caged molecules in the membrane, thus overcoming the problem of interfacial defects. Under the condition of optimal RCC3/PIP mass ratio, the as-prepared membrane exhibited favorable water permeability of 52.55 LMH/bar (5.2 times of PIP/TMC membrane) with good dye rejection (98.6% for MEB) and salt permeability. Due to the extremely low surface roughness (Ra = 12.5 nm), the membrane exhibited outstanding anti-fouling capacity with high and stable flux recovery rate. Furthermore, the membrane possessed excellent long-term stability, which underlined the promising potential in practical application.

Polyarylate membrane constructed from porous organic cage for high-performance organic solvent nanofiltration

Zhe Zhai,Chi Jiang,Na Zhao,Wenjing Dong,Peng Li,Haixiang Sun,Q. Jason Niu

Preparation of highly permeable and selective organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes is desired for precise chemical separations. Although the emerging nanomaterials and novel preparation methods have significantly boosted the membrane performance, it still requires much effort to drive them toward scale-up production with lower cost and easier preparation process. Herein, we constructed a polyarylate membrane from one kind of porous organic cage, namely Noria through traditional interfacial polymerization technique. Under the catalysis of triethylamine, Noria in aqueous phase would react with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) in hexane to form a dense nano-film. The inner cavity of Noria molecule provided nano-channel for both polar and non-polar solvents to transport through the membrane. Specially, the Noria + TPC membrane exhibits a high permeance for methanol up to 18 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . This is resulted from the low interaction energy between methanol and Noria as revealed by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In addition to the excellent performance, the simple preparation process with low-cost materials suggests the great potential of Noria + TPC membrane for practical application. Moreover, it would inspire the exploration of other molecules with tailored chemical structures for the assembly of high-performance membranes in future.

Porous organic cage for enantiomeric fluorescence recognition of amino acid and hydroxy acid

Yang Liu,Jia Jia,Tong Liao,Jin Luo,Xinfeng Zhang

A new method based on the enantioselective recognition of porous organic cages CC3-R was established for the first time. Porous organic cages are widely used for separation, adsorption and host–guest interaction sensing, but are rarely used for fluorescence sensing. Based on the inherent chiral environment of CC3-R and the inherent fluorescence properties of the organic ligands constituting the cage, when different chiral monomers diffuse into the cage, different effects occur to produce changes in fluorescence. We found for the first time that the fluorescence of CC3-R can be enhanced and quenched by tyrosine and mandelic acid, respectively, and that different chiral monomers are enhanced or quenched differently at the same concentration. Unlike the chiral recognition of other composite luminescent materials, the chiral porous organic cage not only utilizes its own host–guest effect for chiral recognition, but also utilizes the organic ligands constituting the cage for luminescence recognition. This work provides an alternative method to accomplish chiral recognition other than chromatography, that is using porous organic cages (POC), but it can show the advantages of simplicity, low cost and high sensitivity. We believe this work could provide valuable thoughts in the exploration of POC in chiral recognition as new FL probes for the future.

Self-healing anticorrosive coatings inspired by the biomimetic porous organic cage nanocontainer for mussels

Lu Shen,Weiping Xie,Chengbo Ni,Yuxiao Xie,Lijing Miao,Wenjie Zhao

In harsh corrosive environments such as deep sea, it cannot meet the requirements of long-term anticorrosion by uniquely increasing the physical barrier property of a coating with lamellar Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets . Thus, it is quite desirable to acquire exciting anticorrosion applications through a skillful combination of a self-healing property with the physical barrier property of lamellar nanosheets. Inspired by the adhesion mechanisms of mussels, we successfully fabricated a porous organic cage (HNQ-EN) with adhesive nature as a nanocontainer. It could easily combine with Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and advance the compatibility between Ti 3 C 2 T x and organic resin. Meantime, the porous structure of HNQ-EN enables it to accommodate various guest molecules, such as green cerium nitrate corrosion inhibitor . The introduction of HE-Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ce in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution made the inhibition efficiency from the initial 7.8% increase to 91.1% after immersion for 36 h. It derived from the successful release of Ce 3+ from HNQ-EN and forming cerium deposited film. For the composite coating containing HE-Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ce (EP/HE-Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ce), the LEIS results demonstrated it showed self-healing performance provided by Ce 3+ . Moreover, the lowest Z f = 0.01 Hz value for EP/HE-Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ce coating reached 4.41 × 10 6  Ω cm 2 after immersion for 36 h, which was one magnitude larger than that of EP coating.

High performance reverse osmosis membrane with a separation layer consisting of highly selective polyamide networks and porous organic cages

Yanan Yao,Tianyi Xia,Jiaci Wang,Zhuan Yi,Wentao Yan,Yong Zhou,Congjie Gao

Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology has widespread applications in many fields, such as desalination and organics removal. A long-standing goal for RO membrane technology is developing highly permeable RO membranes with high rejection. Upgrading of the separation layer microstructure is the key. One ideal design for the separation layer microstructure is that the layer is rich in fast water transport channels and meanwhile the polyamide (PA) networks are highly selective. The simplest strategy to increase fast water transport channels is introducing functional materials into the separation layer via the aqueous or organic phase addition. The organic phase addition method is more effective. However, most functional materials reported cannot be dissolved or dispersed well in the organic phase, which are not suitable for this method. Besides, the attentions that PA network received were less than functional materials in the past, though it is crucial for the rejection. This work proposes to construct the kind of separation layer mentioned above via introducing a porous organic cage (CC3), which is an intrinsically porous organic molecule with oil solubility, in the separation layer as the supplier for fast water transport channel by the organic phase addition method, and with the aid of an oil-soluble surfactant, which contributes to the formation of highly selective PA networks through surfactant-assembly regulated interfacial polymerization. Our strategy is efficient. By using a tiny amount of CC3 (0.005 %  w / v ) and surfactant (0.0025 % w/v), a flux of 93.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 (an increase of 43.1 %), a salt rejection of 98.82 % and a water/salt selectivity of 7864 can be achieved. This performance is at high level for a desalination RO membrane. Simultaneously, the developed RO membrane exhibited an improved removal performance for organic compounds with low molecular weight (<300 Da). The organics rejection exceeded 91.00 %.

Composite Proton-Exchange Membrane with Highly Improved Proton Conductivity Prepared by in Situ Crystallization of Porous Organic Cage

Ruiyi Han,Peiyi Wu

Porous organic cage, a kind of newly emerging soluble crystalline porous material, is introduced to proton-exchange membrane by in situ crystallization. The crystallized Cage 3 with intrinsic water-meditated three-dimensional interconnected proton pathways working together with Nafion matrix generates a composite membrane with highly improved proton conductivity. Different from inorganic crystalline porous materials, like metal–organic frameworks, the organic porous material shows better compatibility with Nafion matrix due to the absence of inorganic elements. In addition, Cage 3 can absorb water up to 20.1 wt %, which effectively facilitates proton conduction under both high- and low-humidity conditions. Meanwhile, the selectivity of Nafion–Cage 3 composite membrane is also elevated upon the loading of Cage 3. The proton conductivity is evidently enhanced without obvious increased methanol permeability. At 90 °C and 95% RH, the proton conductivity of NC3-5 reaches 0.27 S·cm–1, highly improved compared to 0.08 S·cm–1 of recast Nafion under the same condition. This study offers a new strategy for modifying proton-exchange membrane with crystalline porous materials.

Enantiomeric Separation on a Homochiral Porous Organic Cage-Based Chiral Stationary Phase by Gas Chromatography

Li Hong-Xing,Xie Tian-Peng,Xie Sheng-Ming,Wang Bang-Jin,Zhang Jun-Hui,Yuan Li-Ming

Porous organic cages (POCs) are an emerging class of porous molecular materials which self-assembled by discrete, shape-persistent, cage-like molecules and have recently received intensive interest in diverse fields. In this work, a hydroxyl-functionalized homochiral POC was synthesized by [4 + 6] condensation of 2-hydroxy-1,3,5-triformylbenzene with (1 R , 2 R )-diaminocyclohexane and coated on a capillary column for gas chromatography (GC) separations. Forty-one pairs of enantiomers belonging to various classes have been resolved on the column, including alcohols, diols, esters, lactones, halohydrocarbons, ethers, epoxides, ketones and sulfoxides. Compared with β-cyclodextrin derivative-based commercial β-DEX 120 column, previously reported chiral POCs- (CC9 and CC10) based columns, there are 12, 27 and 19 pairs of studied enantiomers cannot be resolved on β-DEX 120 column, CC9 column and CC10 column, respectively. Besides, both separation factors and resolution values of some racemates are higher on this column than those on β-DEX 120 column, CC9 column and CC10 column. The results demonstrate that the column exhibits good chiral recognition complementarity or superior chiral resolution capability to those columns which used for comparison, and the introduction of hydroxyl group enhances hydrogen-bonding interaction to some racemates, leading to better enantioselectivity. The column also shows excellent separation performance toward positional isomers of dichlorobenzene, dibromobenzene, nitrotoluene, chlorotoluene, nitrobromobenzene and nitrochlorobenzene. The retention time and selectivity of analytes have no significant changes after more than 500 injections and 260 °C conditioned for 6 h, showing the good repeatability and thermal stability of the column. This work indicates the promising prospect of POCs for GC separation, especially for the separation of enantiomers and also demonstrates the significance of design and synthesis of more functionalized chiral POCs for GC enantioseparation that broaden the enantiomer separation scope and applicability of POCs-based columns through their chiral recognition complementarities.

Homochiral porous organic cage used as stationary phase for open tubular capillary electrochromatography

Jun-Hui Zhang,Peng-Jing Zhu,Sheng-Ming Xie,Min Zi,Li-Ming Yuan

Porous organic molecular cages, as a new type of porous materials, have in recent years attracted a tremendous amount of attention for their potential applications. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no attempt to utilize porous organic molecular cages as stationary phases in capillary electrochromatography (CEC). We report herein the use of a homochiral porous organic cage (POC) (CC3-R) as a stationary phase in open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) for the separation of chiral compounds and positional isomers. The column was fabricated using CC3-R as the stationary phase by a static coating method. Separation of furoin, benzoin , and alprenlol were achieved on the CC3-R coated column, with the highest resolution value ( R s  = 3.35) for the separation of benzoin. The influences of pH and buffer concentration on separation have been investigated. Besides, the CC3-R column also exhibited good selectivity for the separation of positional isomers, including those of nitrophenols , phenylenediamines , aminophenols , and ionones . The run-to-run ( n  = 5), day-to-day ( n  = 5), column-to-column ( n  = 3), and batch-to-batch ( n  = 3) relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the analyte migration time were in the range of 0.5–1.5%, 0.2–1.8%, 1.2–2.1% and 1.5–2.8%, respectively. The RSDs for the migration time and enantioselectivity of the analyte were less than 5.9% and 2.2% (inter-day, n  = 5) after a week of continuous use. This work also indicates that porous organic molecular materials are promising for enantioseparation in CEC and look set to become more attractive in separation science .

Phosphine-Built-in Porous Organic Cage for Stabilization and Boosting the Catalytic Performance of Palladium Nanoparticles in Cross-Coupling of Aryl Halides

Zhaozhan Wang,C. Bal Reddy,Xin Zhou,Jessica Juweriah Ibrahim,Yong Yang

Herein, we report first a novel phosphine-containing porous organic cage (PPOC) from a [2 + 3] self-assembly of triphenyl phosphine-based trialdehyde and (S,S)-1,2-diaminocyclohexane via dynamic imine chemistry, which was employed as a porous material for the controlled growth of palladium nanoparticles (NPs) due to the strong affinity of Pd to the phosphine ligand based on the principle of hard and soft acids and bases. Comprehensive characterizations including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, NMR, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal that ultrafine Pd NPs with narrow size distribution (1.7 ± 0.3 nm) and enhanced surface electronic density via a strong interaction between NPs and phosphine were homogeneously dispersed in the PPOC. The resultant catalyst Pd@PPOC exhibits remarkably superior catalytic activities for various cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides, for example, Sonogashira, Suzuki, Heck, and carbonylation. The catalytic activity of Pd@PPOC outperforms the state-of-the-art Pd complexes and other Pd NPs supported on N-containing porous cages under identical conditions, owing to the enhanced surface electronic density of Pd NPs and their high stability and dispersibility in solution. More importantly, Pd@PPOC is highly stable and easily recycled and reused without loss of their catalytic activity. This work provides a new functional POC with extended potentials in catalysis and material science.
