From “white carbon” to “black carbon”: Upcycling discarded plastic bottles into shining porous chars for the removal of sulfamethoxazole from water

Yuxin Qi,Ying Bi,Chao Kong,Changyin Zhu,Hu Cheng,Yinlong Zhang,Jiangang Han,Jianming Xue,Ziyan Li,Yang Song,Dongmei Zhou

Recycling difficult-to-degrade plastics, also known as “white pollution”, is currently being researched in the fields of materials and the environment, which is an extremely challenging topic. In this study, a pyrolysis-activation method combined with multiple activators was developed to prepare stable porous plastic chars (PPCs) from discarded plastic bottles for removing the typical antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Micro/mesopores were formed in the PPCs, with the specific surface area reaching 961.20 m 2 /g. C, O, and N were the main elements in the PPCs, and their atomic ratios showed the hydrophobicity and aromaticity. Graphite-like structures and abundant surface functional groups were generated in the PPCs. Unlike conventional char materials, impurities, such as aluminum oxide, have high reflectivity, resulting in the appearance of many shining spots. PPCs display a high sorption capability for SMX, with the maximum sorption quantity determined reaching 487.52 mg/g. Multilayer sorption is dominated by physical processes, and pore filling, partitioning, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and electrostatic interactions are the main sorption processes. Chemical-like sorption and mass transfer control the sorption rate. Furthermore, PPCs have stable performance and good recyclability and could be used for practical applications. This study provides a novel strategy and an example of the upcycling of discarded plastic as an excellent char material for environmental remediation.

Hypophosphite tailored graphitized hierarchical porous biochar toward highly efficient solar thermal energy harvesting and stable Storage/Release

Pan-Pan Zhao,Cong Deng,Ze-Yong Zhao,Peng Lu,Shuang He,Yu-Zhong Wang

Utilization of renewable solar energy is a promising pathway to relieve the severe energy shortage in current fossil fuel society, for which phase change materials (PCMs) based on sustainable porous biomass carbon materials represent an attractive and enormously potential option. However, structural tailor of hierarchical pores independent of biomass natural structure is still difficult for these carbon materials, thus seriously limiting their efficiency in solar thermal energy harvesting and stable storage/release. In this work, hierarchical porous carbons (HPCs) derived from chestnuts were fabricated by using aluminum hypophosphite (AP) as a multifunctional (dehydrating, blowing, and crosslinking) activator. Different measurements confirmed that unique interpenetrating HPC network structures with continuous channels were tailored via the triple effects of AP. The resulting HPC displays high pore volume and high thermal conductivity. The HPC-stabilized composite PCM with 85 wt% octadecane (Octadecane 85 @HPC) possesses the high transition enthalpy of 216.2 J g −1 and shows high reliability in thermal cycle test. Compared with currently reported similar bio-based PCMs, the Octadecane 85 @HPC shows higher energy storage capacity. Interestingly, the solar thermal energy conversion efficiency of the Octadecane 85 @HPC reaches 96.1%, presenting excellent solar energy harvesting capacity. This work provides a promising strategy to tailor biomass HPC for highly efficient solar thermal energy harvesting and storage/release.

Zn²⁺-urea synergistic enhance hydrothermal carbonization of PVC: Dechlorination with Zn loading, photocatalytic performance

Cheng Liao,Dachao Ma,Qisong Zhong,Wenfeng Ya,Mengyue Chen,Dongbo Wang,Zheng Liu,Qingge Feng

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising approach for dechlorination of PVC plastic wastes. However, the high dechlorination temperature is one of the key obstacles to the application of it. This work introduced Zn 2 + and urea into the hydrothermal process to lower the dechlorination temperature of PVC plastic and investigated the photocatalytic performance of the derived zinc-loaded solid products. It was revealed that Zn 2+ and urea acted synergistic effects to open up the porous structures and prevent PVC particle agglomeration, so as to facilitate the penetration of hydroxyl and Zn 2+ in to the particles, catalyzing the elimination and substitution of PVC. Particularly, it achieved a remarkable dechlorination efficiency of 99.96 % by HTC at 200 °C in 120 min. By modulating the hydrothermal parameters, the Zn 5 (OH) 6 (CO 3 ) 2 was simultaneously loaded onto the PVC-derived porous hydrochar. After that, the zinc-loaded hydrochar was pyrolyzed into a porous ZnO-C composite material. Serving as a carbon dopant source, the PVC-derived hydrochar reduced the band gap of ZnO, broadening its light absorption range. Benefiting from this bandgap narrowing and extended light absorption, the ZnO-C composite achieved 92.22 % degradation efficiency for TMX in aqueous solution under simulated natural light and maintained high activity over 5 cycles (retaining ∼70.17 % efficiency). This work pioneered a pathway for low-temperature hydrothermal dechlorination of PVC and demonstrated the potential practical application of the derived ZnO-C composites in photocatalysis.

Synergetic regulation mechanism of K-assisted bamboo gasification for porous char and H2-rich syngas poly-generation

Wang Lu,Mingwei Xia,Ziyue Tang,Yingquan Chen,Xianhua Wang,Haiping Yang,Hanping Chen

Poly-generation of porous char and H 2 -rich syngas is a key technology for the full and high-value use of carbon and hydrogen elements in biomass. In this study, the synergistic evolution and regulation mechanisms of H 2 and porous carbon during K-assisted bamboo gasification were investigated using fixed-bed pyrolysis-gasification system. The results show that, due to steam activation, both the H 2 production rate and the physicochemical properties of char initially increase and then decline with prolonged gasification time, reaching their peak in the middle stage of the process. The hydrogen conversion rate further indicates that partial gasification achieves higher production efficiency, which is favorable for the poly-generation. K accelerates the evolution of both char and H 2 , enhancing their quality and ultimately enabling the poly-generation of 31.5 mmol/g H 2 and porous carbon with a S BET of 1917 m 2 /g. Moreover, K promotes oxygen enrichment in char, particularly the incorporation of O=C-OR and C=O groups on the char surface, thereby improving the functional applicability of the carbon.
