Effective and Efficient Porous CeO2 Adsorbent for Acid Orange 7 Adsorption

Yaohui Xu,Liangjuan Gao,Jinyuan Yang,Qingxiu Yang,Wanxin Peng,Zhao Ding

A porous CeO2was synthesized following the addition of guanidine carbonate to a Ce3+aqueous solution, the subsequent addition of hydrogen peroxide and a final hydrothermal treatment. The optimal experimental parameters for the synthesis of porous CeO2, including the amounts of guanidine carbonate and hydrogen peroxide and the hydrothermal conditions, were determined by taking the adsorption efficiency of acid orange 7 (AO7) dye as the evaluation. A template−free hydrothermal strategy could avoid the use of soft or hard templates and the subsequent tedious procedures of eliminating templates, which aligned with the goals of energy conservation and emission reduction. Moreover, both the guanidine carbonate and hydrogen peroxide used in this work were accessible and eco−friendly raw materials. The porous CeO2possessed rapid adsorption capacities for AO7 dye. When the initial concentration of AO7 was less than 130 mg/L, removal efficiencies greater than 90.0% were obtained, achieving a maximum value of 97.5% at [AO7] = 100 mg/L and [CeO2] = 2.0 g/L in the first 10 min of contact. Moreover, the adsorption–desorption equilibrium between the porous CeO2adsorbent and the AO7 molecule was basically established within the first 30 min. The saturated adsorption amount of AO7 dye was 90.3 mg/g based on a Langmuir linear fitting of the experimental data. Moreover, the porous CeO2could be recycled using a NaOH aqueous solution, and the adsorption efficiency of AO7 dye still remained above 92.5% after five cycles. This study provided an alternative porous adsorbent for the purification of dye wastewater, and a template−free hydrothermal strategy was developed to enable the design of CeO2−based catalysts or catalyst carriers. Keywords:porous CeO2;template−free;adsorption;adsorption efficiency;acid orange 7

Oxygen vacancies-enriched porous CeO2-Co3O4 hybrid nanosheets for high-efficiency toluene catalytic oxidation

Xiaocong Qin,Qi Xue,Changluo Su,Yuan Dang,Xiaoqin Sun,Yuanzhen Zhou

Catalytic oxidation is an efficient method for mitigating toluene emissions, but enhancing catalytic performance for toluene oxidation remains a challenge. To enhance the oxidation capacity of catalysts, appropriate morphology and composition adjustments are required. Herein, the porous CeO 2 -Co 3 O 4 hybrid nanosheets (CeO 2 -Co 3 O 4 HNSs) have been designed and prepared by the hydrothermal method . Compared with single composition CeO 2 and Co 3 O 4 , the CeO 2 -Co 3 O 4 HNSs exhibit superior performance, achieving a remarkable 90% toluene conversion at a reaction temperature of 215°C with a space velocity of 36,000 mL/(h·g). Their enhanced activity can be attributed to the unique morphology and multi-component synergistic effect. The introduction of Co can significantly increase the content of oxygen vacancy  and optimize the electronic structure, which can enhance the formation of surface-active oxygen and accelerate the cycle of the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox pair. This work establishes a promising avenue for treating volatile organic compounds in exhaust emissions.

The controlled preparation and performance of Fe, Co-modified porous ceria nanorods for the total oxidation of propane

Qi Song,Rui Ran,Jiancai Ding,Xiaodong Wu,Zichun Si,Duan Weng

Porous ceria nanorods modified with Fe or Co were prepared via a hydrothermal method. The structural properties, catalytic activities for the total oxidation of propane, and catalytic mechanisms of these materials were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption–desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, catalytic activity measurements and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Co-modified ceria exhibited the best catalytic activity during propane oxidation as well as enhanced reducibility due to the synergistic interactions between the Co and the CeO 2 support. Variations in the activating ability and reducibility of the catalysts resulted in the formation of distinctive intermediates during the catalytic process, and this explained the observed differences in catalytic performance.

Porous CeO2 nanorods loaded with indocyanine green for enhanced tumor-specific therapy

Sheng Wu,Renlu Han,Yuyan Yan,Wei Chen,Wenqing Gao,Yafei Hou,Keqi Tang

Recently, catalytic therapy on the basis of Fenton reaction represents a very promising paradigm for potential cancer therapy, which has inspired great research interest and got fast progress. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to fabricate nanocatalytic systems that can precisely perform catalytic activity in tumor tissues without causing toxicity to adjacent normal tissues. Herein, we designed and fabricated a porous CeO 2 nanorods that can selectively perform therapeutic activity in the weakly acidic tumor microenvironment via converting H 2 O 2 into •OH to kill cancer cells, meanwhile, the normal tissues are protected by decomposing H 2 O 2 into O 2 in the physiological environment. Specifically, benefiting from the porous structure, such CeO 2 nanorods could be loaded with Indocyanine green (ICG) that could both contribute itself to generate singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and convert near-infrared (NIR) light to hyperthermia. Once exposed to NIR light, on the one hand, the catalytic activity of CeO 2 was significantly enhanced by photothermal effect of ICG for highly efficient tumor catalytic therapy; on the other hand, the generated hyperthermia and 1 O 2 by ICG can further synergistically enhance the therapy efficiency via directing killing cancer cells. The current study provides a proof-of-concept demonstration of tumor-specific therapy with minimal non-targeted toxicity.

Dual-responsive dithio-polydopamine coated porous CeO2 nanorods for targeted and synergistic drug delivery

Ying Zhang,Xiaowen Wu,Chenxi Hou,Kun Shang,Kui Yang,Zhimin Tian,Zhichao Pei,Yongquan Qu,Yuxin Pei

Objective The aim was to produce the first report of assembling degradable stimuli-responsive dithio-polydopamine coating with a cancer target unit for synergistic and targeted drug delivery. Methods A multifunctional drug delivery system was constructed by coating a dual-responsive dithio-polydopamine (PDS) on porous CeO2 nanorods and subsequent conjugation of lactose derivative, where the PDS was formed by self-polymerization of dithio-dopamine (DOPASS).Results The multifunctional drug delivery system displayed excellent cancer targeted ability resulting from the conjugation of lactose derivative, which could specifically recognize the overexpressed asialoglycoprotein receptors on the surface of HepG2 cells. It also showed a dual-responsive property of glutathione and pH, achieving controllable drug release from the cleavage of disulfide bond and subsequent degradation of PDS in cancer cells. Moreover, the degradation of PDS led to the exposure of CeO2 nanorods, which has a synergistic anticancer effect due to its cytotoxicity to cancer cells. Conclusion This work presents a good example of a rational design towards synergistic and targeted DDS for cancer chemotherapies.
