Pt-Nanoparticle-Loaded Porous SnO2 for Optimizing H2S-Sensing Performance at Room Temperature

Peijin Zou,Zhuangzhuang Ma,Zihuan Tang,Xiaotong Gao,Xiaoxiong Hou,Lichao Jia

Achieving the real-time detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) based on metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors is of great significance for rapid disease diagnosis. However, the high-power consumption and poor selectivity severely limit its practice application. In this study, a platinum nanoparticle (Pt NPs)-loaded porous metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived SnO2 material was successfully synthesized to optimize the H2S-sensing performance at room temperature. The optimized Pt-loaded porous SnO2-based gas sensor exhibited remarkably high sensitivity (712–10 ppm), fast response (21 s), good selectivity, and extremely low detection limit for H2S (10 ppb) at room temperature. The in-depth analysis demonstrated that the porous structure of Sn-MOF can provide adequate active reaction sites for gas molecules. Moreover, the uniform distribution of surface-loaded Pt NPs can initiate electron and chemical sensitization effects, thereby improving the sensing performance. The successful application of Pt NPs provides a novel approach to improve the room-temperature (RT) sensing performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors.

Preparation of porous SnO2-based ceramics with lattice structure by DLP

Guoan Qi,Yong Zeng,Jimin Chen

Porous tin oxide-based (SnO 2 -based) ceramics with lattice structures were prepared by digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology. A 57 wt% SnO 2 -based DLP slurry was prepared by rheological experiments. By optimizing the exposure time, the DLP process for preparing SnO 2 based ceramics had better molding accuracy. The printing size error could be controlled at about 1.8%. The degreasing and sintering curves were obtained by thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) analysis, and the SnO 2 -based porous ceramics with porosity of 50%–71% were prepared. The SnO 2 -based ceramics with high densification could be obtained by sintering at 1300 °C for 2 h. The relative density of printed SnO 2 -based ceramics was about 92%. In this paper, zinc oxide (ZnO) was selected as a sintering additive to promote the densification of SnO 2 ceramics. According to the characterization methods of scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and relative density, the optimum doping amount of ZnO was 9 wt%. The influence of pore structure on compressive strength was analyzed by finite element simulation and compressive test. The compressive strength of porous ceramics could be reduced from 1.56 MPa to 0.27 MPa by controlling the porosity of the porous lattice from 50% to 71%. The compressive strength of the solid block was 160 MPa. In this study, the porous SnO 2 -based ceramics prepared can be used in porous electrodes, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors , catalysts, sensors and other fields in the future.

Porous SnO2 nanoparticles based ion chromatographic determination of non-fluorescent antibiotic (chloramphenicol) in complex samples

Muhammad Nadeem,Rahman Abdul,Younis Muhammad Adnan,Subhani Qamar,Shehzad Khurram,Cui Hairong,Zhu Yan

Nowadays, there are rising concerns about the extensive use of the antibiotics such as chloramphenicol (CAP), has threatened the human life in the form of various vicious diseases. The limited selectivity and sensitivity of confirmatory techniques (UV and electrochemical) and non-fluorescence property of CAP make its determination a challenging task in the modern pharmaceutical analysis. In order to redeem the selective, sensitive and cost-effective fluorescence methodology, here by the dual role of synthesized porous SnO 2 nanoparticles were exploited; (i) a porous sorbent in a µ-QuEChERS based sample preparation and as (ii) a stimulant for the transformation of non-fluorescent analytes namely CAP and p-nitrophenol (p-NP) into their respective fluorescent product. We report a green, simple, selective and cost effective ion chromatographic method for CAP sensitive determination in three complex matrices including milk, human urine and serum. The synthesized sorbent not only selectively adsorbed and degraded the matrix/interferences but also selectively reduced the non-fluorescent antibiotic CAP into a fluorescent species. This developed ion chromatographic method exhibited good selectivity, linearity (r 2  ≥ 0.996) and limit of detection (LOD) was in the range 0.0201–0.0280 µg/kg. The inter- and intraday precisions were also satisfactory having a relative standard deviation (RSDs) less than 14.96% and excellent recoveries of CAP in the range of 78.3–100.2% were retrieved in various complex samples.

Porous SnO2 nanospheres coated with reduced graphene oxide for formaldehyde gas sensor: Synthesis, performance and mechanism

Zhou F. Y.,Xu J. C.,Hong B.,Peng X. L.,Zeng Y. X.,Li J.,Ge H. L.,Wang X. Q.

Mesoporous SnO 2 nanospheres are synthesized by template-free solvothermal method, and then reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets are anchored on SnO 2 nanospheres (SnO 2 @rGO nanocomposites) by hydrothermal method. The gas-sensing results indicate that rGO nanosheets greatly affect the formaldehyde (HCHO) gas-sensing properties, which the response to 100 ppm HCHO gas increases with the rGO content and reach the maximum of 113.56 at 190 °C for SnO 2 @0.5%rGO sensor. Owing to the huge surface area and conductivity, rGO nanosheets absorb more oxygen molecules and extract electrons from SnO 2 nanospheres, leading to the thicker electron depletion layer of SnO 2 nanospheres. Furthermore, p-n heterojunctions at the interface of rGO nanosheets and SnO 2 nanospheres further increase the thickness of electron depletion layer. However, SnO 2 @0.8%rGO sensor presents the lower response for the new conductive pathways between the surface rGO nanosheets due to the excess of rGO content. Graphical abstract

Porous SnO2 nanospheres as sensitive gas sensors for volatile organic compounds detection

Zhipeng Li,Quanqin Zhao,Weiliu Fan,Jinhua Zhan

Porous SnO2 nanospheres with high surface areas have been synthesized through a solvothermal method in the absence of any templates. The structure and morphology of the resultant products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption–desorption technique. The as-prepared SnO2 porous nanospheres with the diameters ranging from 90–150 nm are composed of small nanocrystals with average sizes of less than 10 nm. Results demonstrated that the formation of porous SnO2 nanospheres is ascribed to etching the center part of the nanospheres. It was found that hydrochloric acid and NaClO played important roles in determining the final morphologies of the porous SnO2 nanospheres. The gas sensing properties of the as-prepared porous SnO2 nanospheres were investigated. By the comparative gas sensing tests, the porous SnO2 nanospheres exhibited a superior gas sensing performance toward ppb level 2-chloroethanol and formaldehyde vapor, implying promising applications in detecting toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

3D ordered porous SnO2 with a controllable pore diameter for enhanced formaldehyde sensing performance

Dan Sun,Huixiao Guo,Yu Li,Haiying Li,Xiaosong Li,Chunxia Tian,Jianxia Zhang,Li Liu

This paper reports the preparation of 3D ordered porous SnO 2 with different diameters (103, 546, and 1030 nm) by a simple template method. We find that 103 nm porous SnO 2 nanomaterials have the highest response (30) and fastest response/recovery time (3/10 s) for 100 ppm HCHO (formaldehyde) compared with the response and response/recovery times for 546 nm (20 and 3/17 s, respectively) and 1030 nm (10 and 6/20 s, respectively) porous SnO 2 nanomaterials at a low working temperature (220 ∘ C). All three sensors show good long-term stability, repeatability, and linearity. The results show that decreasing the diameter of the porous SnO 2 materials effectively increased the gas sensitivity to HCHO. The increase in the gas sensitivity was attributed to the ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, and additional oxygen vacancies on the surface.

Available surface electronic transmission of porous SnO2/NiO hollow nanofibers for the enhanced gas-sensing performance toward n-butanol

Qian Ma,Hang Li,Jia Guo,Shushu Chu,Qi Zhang,Ziqiong Lin

Porous SnO 2 /NiO hollow nanofibers with effective surface transmission behavior have been prepared through a facile modified electrospinning method . The introduction of Ni component into the precursor solution can not only regulate the morphological evolution together with the nucleation and crystallization of oxide heterostructures at the elevated temperature action, but also significantly contribute to the enhancement of the gas-sensing performance for testing n-butanol gas. SnO 2 /NiO composites can present the highest response of 199 at the optimum operating temperature of 280 °C toward 100 ppm n-butanol gas, which is 4.5 times than that of pure SnO 2 nanofibers. Meanwhile, the response/recovery times of the sensors can be immensely decreased from 57/16 s of pure sample to 36/10 s as the adding amount of Ni component increasing to 5%, along with the superior selectivity and long-term stability toward n-butanol. The excellent gas-sensing properties of the sensors can be mainly attributed to the flourishing porous one-dimensional (1D) microstructure containing the closely connected p-n heterojunctions of SnO 2 and NiO, which can provide large specific surface areas with a mass of active sites to promote the reaction between n-butanol molecule and O δ− on the surface.

Ga-Doped 3D Ordered Porous SnO2 for Enhanced Formaldehyde Sensing Performance

Dan Sun,Xiaonian Tang,Shuo Li,Li Liu

Pure and Ga-doped 3D ordered porous SnO2 (3DOPS) nanomaterials were synthesized by a simple template method, and SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by an annealing process. The presence of Ga in 3DOPS and the structure of 3DOPS were determined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface areas of the porous structure were measured by the BET method using a middle-high pressure physical gas adsorption instrument. Due to the porous structure and dopant effects on the SnO2 nanomaterials, 3 at % Ga-doped 3DOPS has the largest specific surface area (61.58 m2/g) compared with pure particle tin dioxide (38.60 m2/g). The 3 at % Ga-doped 3DOPS-based sensor exhibits a lower detection limit (2/0.1 ppm) and improved sensitivity (55/50 ppm) to formaldehyde (HCHO) at a low temperature (210 °C), and the response is 6.5 times higher than that of the pure SnO2 NP-based sensor (8.5/50 ppm). However, the response of pure 3DOPS (18/50 ppm) is only twice as high as that of the pure SnO2 NP-based sensor. In addition, the 3.0 at % Ga-doped level of the SnO2 sensor showed a fast response time (2 s) and excellent selectivity. The high sensitivity of SnO2 can be explained by the increase in the specific surface area and porosity brought by the 3D ordered porous structure, and the modified suface structure by precious metals.

Improve the Formaldehyde Gas-Sensing Performance of 3D Porous SnO2 by Controlling the Calcination Time and the Amount of Holmium Doped

Tian Chunxia,Tian Xi-ang,Li Yu,Wang Zhijun,Liu Li

Porous SnO 2 with high sensitivity and fast response has attracted much attention. Herein, we prepared 3D porous SnO 2 using carbon balls as a template and studied the effects of sintering time (1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 4 h) at a certain calcination temperature of 500℃ and Ho doping on the gas-sensing performance of 3D porous SnO 2 . The gas-sensing test results show that, compared with the samples obtained under other sintering time, the gas-sensing property of 3D porous SnO 2 calcined for 2 h has the highest gas sensitivity of 31 in the 50-ppm formaldehyde environment. Among the samples doped with Ho, 3D porous SnO 2 with a doping amount of 3.5% has the highest sensitivity of 65 at operating temperature of 230℃, which is twice as long as pure 3D porous SnO 2 with a calcination time of 2 h. Moreover, the sample has good selectivity, low detection limit, and good linearity. These excellent gas-sensing characteristics are mainly due to the unique morphology of 3D porous SnO 2 , more oxygen vacancies, and the influence of Ho doping. Therefore, the gas-sensing performance of the metal oxide semiconductor material can be further improved by forming the porous nanocomposite material. Graphical Abstract (a) Response recovery time of SnO 2 obtained under different calcination times; (b) Response recovery time of SnO 2 doped with different Ho content.

Porous SnO2/Co3O4 nanocubes anchored onto reduced graphene oxide as a high-performance anode for lithium-ion batteries

Liming Chen,Bin Tang,Haoyue Li,Bohan Wang,Bin Huang

Microstructure design and constructing heterojunctions are of great value for transition metal oxides to realize a high-performance electrode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this paper, monodisperse porous SnO 2 /Co 3 O 4 nanocubes anchored onto graphene is fabricated. The SnO 2 and Co 3 O 4 phases in the composite are detected by X-ray diffraction. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are employed to gain insight into the microstructure of the nanocubes, which are composed of tightly contacted SnO 2 and Co 3 O 4 particles with a size range from 100 to 200 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that SnO 2 and Co 3 O 4 are chemically bound together. Four samples of pure SnO 2 , pure Co 3 O 4 , SnO 2 /Co 3 O 4 nanocubes, and SnO 2 /Co 3 O 4 /rGO composite are compared in electrochemical properties . The excellent rate performance, cycling stability, and reversible specific capacity result from the synergistic effect of the unique microstructure and the function of the high conductive graphene framework in Li ion storage.
