Pressure-enhanced thermopower of ionic thermoelectric gelatin for identifying materials with different thermal conductivities

Jiabin Wang,Suwen Xu,Weiqi Qian,Md Al Mahadi Hasan,Zilin Ren,Ya Yang

As the human body's most vital environmental interface, the skin integrates diverse sensory receptors enabling simultaneous perception of multiple stimuli through multisensory processing. However, the realization of multifunctional sensing system on robots or prosthetics remains a huge challenge. Here we report a multifunctional tactile sensor fabricated from ionic thermoelectric gelatin that achieves simultaneous pressure and temperature detection. The thermoelectric effect of this ionic thermoelectric gelatin is mainly achieved through the synergy of the thermodiffusion effects and the thermogalvanic effect of ions. In addition, by applying pressure, the thermoelectric effect of this ionic thermoelectric gelatin can be changed (the thermopower of the ionic thermoelectric gelatin increases from 1.21 mV/K to 1.67 mV/K, representing a 38 % increase), so as to enable the sensor to sense external forces. By comparing the thermoelectric effect driven by temperature difference and the thermoelectric effect driven by pressure-temperature difference, there is a difference in the voltage response time. This allows for the decoupling of signals at the backend with only a simple algorithm. Using this sensor, we achieved a 95.31 % accuracy rate in identifying different materials. The multifunctional tactile sensor can promote the development of robots and better assist the disabled in restoring their sensory abilities.

Tough and super-stretchable conductive double network hydrogels with multiple sensations and moisture-electric generation

Peng He,Runsheng Guo,Kui Hu,Kai Liu,Shan Lin,Hui Wu,Liulian Huang,Lihui Chen,Yonghao Ni

The rapid development of artificial skin, flexible sensors, and soft robotics proposes more requirements on conductive hydrogels, which should integrate more functions. However, it remains a great challenge to develop an integrated conductive hydrogel combining multiple sensations and self-powered properties. Herein, we develop a conductive MXene-cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)-tamarind gum (TG)-polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel containing conductive ions by a facile fabrication process. A unique double network structure in the composite hydrogel was assembled by employing TG with an ionically cross-linked network and PAM with a UV photoinitiated cross-linked network, which imparted this hydrogel with toughness (38.8 KJ/m 2 ) and high stretchability (2000% strain). The hydrogel also possessed high sensitivity (gauge factor = 5.23, 248% strain) due to the introduction of MXene and mobile ions, thus exhibiting multiple sensations towards pressure, strain, humidity, and temperature. More importantly, the hydrogel is self-powered and can generate an open-circuit-voltage of up to 164 mV from moisture flow in a very short time (18 s). We believe that the hydrogel not only shows great potential applications in artificial skin, flexible sensors, and soft robotics, but also contributes to the development of next-generation artificial intelligence.

Keyuan Pan,Chen Chen,Xiujuan Li,Duoyi Zhu,Kang Chen,Kaili Wang,Xinkai Qian,Xuemei Dong,Min Xu,Hongchao Sun,Zifan Li,Fei Xiu,Zhe Zhou,Wei Huang,Juqing Liu

Multisensory fusion allow artificial neurons to capture and process abundant signals for perceptual enhancement. Apart from the extensively studied visual-tactile fusion, reports on visual-humid perception remains a challenge, which plays a crucial role for living organism in activities such as foraging, weather detection and locating water source. Here we demonstrate a bee-inspired multisensory spiking neuron (MSN) that comprise a capacitive humidity synapse, a resistive photodetector and a threshold- switching memristor. The MSN encodes visual and humidity inputs into a sequence of spike events, mimicking the quintessential function of a bio-neuron, including action potential, threshold-driven spiking, refractory period, and intensity-modulated spike- frequency. The fused spikes can distinguish between humidity and visual signals by decoupling the output frequencies and amplitudes. Simulation results depict that the cross-modal sensing approach achieves a heightened accuracy (96.67%) in object recognition for verifying flower authenticity. This research opens up a new avenue for constructing humid-visual spiking neurons to advance multisensory perception and intelligent recognition capabilities.

A Multisensory Tactile System for Robotic Hands to Recognize Objects

Guozhen Li,Rong Zhu

Multisensory tactile systems play an important role in enhancing robot intelligence. A competent robotic tactile system needs to be simple in structure and easily operated, especially with multiple sensations, and have good coordinate ability like human skin. A novel multisensory tactile system for humanoid robotic hands is proposed, allowing the hand to identify objects by grasping and manipulating them. Robotic multifunction sensors based on skin-inspired thermosensation and structured with micro platinum ribbons partially covered with piezo-thermic silver-nanoparticle-doped porous polydimethylsiloxane membrane simultaneously and independently detect contact pressure, local ambient temperature, and thermal conductivity and temperature of an object. Multiple tactile information which is obtained by the robotic sensors is fused comprehensively based on neural network classification to identify diverse objects in uncertain and dynamic gripping with an object recognition accuracy of 95%. This multisensory system enables robotic hand to better interact with its environment, enhances robotic intelligence, and makes various complex tasks feasible for robots, such as sorting material or rescuing from fire or other disasters.

Environmentally adaptive and durable hydrogels toward multi-sensory application

Youyou Chen,Chen Zhang,Rui Yin,Ao Yin,Qiang Feng,Feihua Liu,Jian Shao,Tong Su,Haoran Wang,Guoqing Chen,Weiwei Zhao

Ionic conductive hydrogels are emerging materials applied in flexible electronics due to their integrated conductivity and mechanical flexibility. However, daunting challenges still remain in developing ionic hydrogels with desirable conductivity and mechanical properties in harsh environments. Herein, a series of environmentally adaptive multifunctional hydrogels were synthesized by the in situ polymerization of polyzwitterions in the presence of inorganic nanoclays and LiCl. Their intrinsic and synergetic features rendered the hydrogels excellent environmental adaptivity. They not only displayed superior stretchability (up to 2167%) and considerable conductivity (17.1 mS cm −1 ) at atmospheric conditions, but also maintained robust electromechanical properties under extreme environments (-60–95 °C, or under vacuum). Moreover, their strong adhesion strength (up to 0.28 MPa on glass), autonomous self-healing capacity (up to 90% recovery efficiency), outstanding injectability and 3D printability enabled them as promising candidates for all-temperature wearable devices. The assembled hydrogel sensors exhibited exceptional multi-sensory capabilities, including strain (1–500%), pressure (0.5–50 kPa), temperature (-20–95 °C), and proximity (0–160 mm). They also functioned reliably at bending tests from −40 to 80 °C, and showed outstanding durability over 10 000 uninterrupted cycles (upon 50% strain and 20 kPa pressure, respectively). The overall merits of the hydrogels provide new insights towards next-generation flexible electronics for healthcare monitoring, human–machine interfaces, and biomedical prostheses.

High-Performance Heterojunction Nanofibers Synaptic Transistors for Sensory Integration in Bionic Systems

Gaoliang Zhou,Gang He,Jiawei Yang,Wentao Su,Can Fu,Huanhuan Wei,Bo He

The development of high-performance thin-film-transistors (TFTs) is of paramount importance for human-computer interaction and neuromorphic computing. Therefore, this work presents an arrayed nanofibers (NFs) heterojunction (InSnO/ZnO) synaptic transistor; the introduction of array heterojunction (AH) architectures significantly enhances the overall performance of NF transistors. The arrayed heterojunction NFs synaptic transistor demonstrates excitatory postsynaptic current (EPSC), paired-pulse facilitation (PPF), and the transitions from short-term to long-term potentiation (STP-LTP). These features suggest potential applications in neuromorphic computing, including constructing artificial neural network (ANN) models for image recognition. Additionally, to study memory behavior in multisensory integration, an artificial audio-visual integration device was developed, successfully mimicking bionic behaviors such as the cocktail party effect and its memory aspects in various environments. These results indicate that the as-prepared synaptic transistor has promising applications in future circuit designs and artificial intelligence chips.

Hierarchically engineering of bioinspired sweat-resistant interlock-structured piezoelectric sensor for self-powered physical rehabilitation and healthcare

Xiaohua Liu,Baolin Jiang,Yanfeng Feng,Can Yang,Shunyao Liang,Dai Li,Xiaohong Yin

Wearable devices for real-time health monitoring face significant challenges due to their sensitivity, long response time and reliance on external power sources. Herein, we present a hierarchical interlock-structured piezoelectric sensor designed with flexible stacked microstructures, composed of an electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride–graphene oxide/polyvinylidene fluoride–barium titanate (PVDF-GO/PVDF-BTO) nanofibrous membrane and Au-sprayed double-sided, bioinspired superhydrophobic PDMS electrodes. These components provide the device with superhydrophobic outer surface (contact angle of ∼160°) and multisensory capabilities, allowing for simultaneous pressure and stretch sensing with high sensitivity (367 mV kPa −1 ), low detection limit (800 Pa), broad operational range (up to 100 kPa), rapid response and recovery times (26 ms and 22 ms, respectively), and remarkable stability (5000 cycles). The sensitivity benefits from the unique design of the piezoelectric hierarchical nanofibrous membrane with manifold microstructures interlocked by electrodes with microdome arrays, enabling large-range deformation at multipoint contacts between sensing layer and electrode under different level of applied pressure, thereby generating sufficient amount of electric power to indicate slight difference in pressure and stretching. A robust electrospinning process combined with hollow-carved template stacking demonstrates that various microstructure geometries, such as microsquares, microcolumns, and microgrooves and dimensions of these structures can be precisely tuned to optimize the electrical performance of the piezoelectric sensor. This work proposes a cost-effective tunable approach to fabricating flexible sweat-resistant sensors with significant potential for precise joint movement tracking and physiological signal detection in physical rehabilitation and self-powered healthcare.

A no-crosstalk multi-functional tactile sensor for precise physiological monitoring

Haifeng Ji,Peihuan Lv,Liming Zhang,Lanyue Shen,Zhenqiu Gao,Zhen Wen,Xuhui Sun

Tactile sensors with multifunctional sensing characteristics enhance people’s perception of external stimuli and have become an indispensable part of human–computer interaction. However, constructing a multi-functional tactile sensor that is able to respond to multiple stimuli without signal crosstalk still remains challenging. Here, we proposed a temperature–pressure integrated multi-functional tactile sensor (TP-MTS) by coupling thermoresistive and contact-electrification effects, which can simultaneously detect human body temperature and physiological motion. A sensing electrode model was validated by using a PVDF/PEG/Gr (polyvinylidene difluoride/Polyethylene terephthalate/graphene) composite thermoresistive film instead of the traditional metal as the electrode of the pressure sensing unit. The multi-functional tactile sensor converts temperature and pressure stimuli into two independent output signals from different paths, realizing simultaneous detection of temperature and pressure without signal crosstalk. The TP-MTS can achieve real-time temperature monitoring with a minimum resolution of 0.1℃ and a sensitivity of 1.51 % ℃ -1 and it could also detect pressure in a wide pressure range (0.25 kPa ∼ 253.87 kPa) with the sensitivity of 3.73 kPa −1 . Through the structure design and the huge impedance difference between the thermosensitive film and the triboelectric unit, the real-time monitoring of temperature and pulse is realized simultaneously in a single device without crosstalk.

A sandwich-structure, low-temperature sensitive and recyclable liquid metal organic hydrogel for a wearable strain sensor

Yiwei Dong,Chen Wang,Zhirui Hu,Shujuan Mao,Xiaotong Wei,Yueqing Fu,Jie Li,Jing Han

Currently, sensors based on hydrogels are less sensitive at low temperatures, and discarded sensors are prone to generate e-waste. Thus, it is challenging to design and prepare novel hydrogels with good properties for wearable sensors. Herein, we report a sandwich-structure liquid metal organic hydrogel with low-temperature sensitive, recyclable and multiple sensation properties. Liquid metal (LM)/cross-linked chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CHACC) composite is prepared by evaporating ethanol and water co-solvent as the core layer. CHACC is used as the top and the bottom layer respectively. The optimal performance of the organic hydrogel is obtained when the volume ratio of ethanol to water is 1:3. The LM/CHACC organic hydrogel exhibits excellent stretchability (strain: 428.37%). Importantly, it has fast responsiveness, recyclability and excellent low-temperature sensitivity (GF = 8.29) at −20°C. The sensors possess stress-temperature sensation with high sensitivity. Moreover, LM as the conductive filler is recyclable under acidic conditions. We demonstrate the functionality of the LM/CHACC organic hydrogel to detect human joint movements and fine movements at low temperatures. It is anticipated to open up new sensing applications based on LM organic hydrogel-based wearable sensors.

Organic Photoelectrochemical Multisensory Integration

Yu-Ting Huang,Zheng Li,Cheng Yuan,Yuan-Cheng Zhu,Wei-Wei Zhao,Jing-Juan Xu

Neuromorphic perception capable of multisensory integration (MSI) in electrolytes is important but remains challenging. Here, the aqueous implementation of artificial MSI is reported based on the newly emerged organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) by representative visual (light)-gustatory (sour) perception. Under the co-modulation of light and H + /OH − , multisensory synaptic plasticity and several typical MSI characteristics are mimicked, including “super-additive response,” “inverse effectiveness effect” and “temporal congruency.” To demonstrate its potential usage, different types of multisensory associative learning and corresponding reflex activities are further emulated. The chemical MSI system is also utilized to control artificial salivation by a closed loop of real-time perception, processing, integration, and actuation to emulate the biological responses toward external stimuli. In contrast to previous solid-state operations, this work offers a new strategy for developing neuromorphic MSI in aqueous environments that are analogous to those in biology.

A multisensory-feedback tactile glove with dense coverage of sensing arrays for object recognition

Ye Qiu,Zhiqiang Wang,Pengcheng Zhu,Binbin Su,Chang Wei,Ye Tian,Zheng Zhang,Hao Chai,Aiping Liu,Lihua Liang,Huaping Wu

Somatosensory networks that provide sophisticated sensory feedback and enable the dexterous manipulation of the human grasp remain difficult to replicate in robots, which is attributed to the grand challenge of densely covering the hand with tactile arrays. Here, a multisensory tactile glove is reported that is capable of object recognition with dense coverage of pressure and temperature sensing arrays. The synergistic effect of the multimodal configuration allows the tactile arrays to perceive contact pressure and thermal conductivity of an object involved in grasping motion, thus enhancing the accuracy via the combination of the mechanical features with thermal properties. By leveraging the multiple scanning technology and wireless transmission system, the tactile glove achieves a recognition accuracy of 94.2% in differentiating 20 types of objects with a modified deep learning algorithm. The large-area sensing arrays with high spatiotemporal resolution and multimodal sensing capabilities, which paves the way for the development of robot grasping tools, human–machine interfacing, and advanced prosthetics.

Self-Powered, Flexible, and Multi-Sensory Artificial Synaptic Devices for Intelligent Object Recognition

Tongzhou Cai,Jiahao Fan,Yifei Yan,Yanfang Zha,Yufan Gu,Xiaohui Hu,Mingchao Li,Shijie Gao,Yunsong Di,Shibiao Wei,Zhihui Chen,Zhixing Gan

The burgeoning fields of artificial intelligence and bio-inspired robotics necessitate the development of advanced artificial synapses that transcend the limitations of conventional unitary and rigid systems. This study presents a self-powered, flexible, multi-sensory artificial synaptic device based on a heterojunction structure of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and sulfur vacancy-rich ZnIn 2 S 4 (Sv-ZIS), which ingeniously integrates optical perception and tactile sensing capabilities within a single platform. By engineering interfacial voids and defect states, the dynamic photo-carrier trapping and releasing enable the emulation of fundamental synaptic behaviors under optical stimulation, with relaxation time reaching 200 s. Concurrently, the device exhibits a quantifiable mechanical response to strain and external force, originating from the contact potential difference between the Sv-ZIS and rGO layers. Remarkably, all functionalities are achieved at zero bias, ensuring minimal energy consumption. Leveraging the multi-sensory ability, an artificial neural network is constructed for intelligent object recognition based on their optical transmittance and weight characteristics, achieving a high accuracy of 97.67%. This work establishes a novel paradigm for the development of energy-efficient, flexible, and multi-modal neuromorphic devices, paving the way for advanced applications in soft robotics, wearable electronics, and human-machine interfaces.
