Bioinspired crawling robots fabricated from flexible materials have received considerable attention in recent years. However, existing solutions for crawling robots capable of multi-directional locomotion primarily focus on the complex driving mode. This study explores invertebrate reptiles inspired soft crawling robots driven by near-infrared (NIR) light. A composite hydrogel with excellent photo-responsive properties is prepared by ingeniously combining poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The crawling robot, when driven by NIR light, achieves an average speed of 0.17 mm/s. It can perform complex tasks such as crawling along a predefined trajectory, crossing obstacles, and traversing mazes via remote control with NIR light. This design holds significant significance for advancing flexible crawling robots and provides valuable insights for the research of bionic robots driven by NIR light.

Electrospinning technology is an effective and simple approach to prepare nanofiber films, which has been widely used in the wearable electronics based on energy harvesting. However, their application in the field of thermoelectrics is rarely reported mainly due to the ultralow performance and difficulty in maintaining temperature difference. Herein, we have designed highly aligned organic/inorganic hybrid nanofiber films with excellent stretchability and thermoelectric performance via electrospinning technology and surface coating methods. The aligned structure is beneficial to fast carrier transportation, in which a sevenfold increase in power factor is achieved as compared with the random structure. Additionally, novel radiative-cooling photothermal-heating electrodes are successfully designed to fabricate solar-driven thermoelectric generators based on the unique aligned nanofiber structure, providing a new concept to build in-plane temperature difference for ultrathin-film-based thermoelectrics. Furthermore, two highly aligned organic/inorganic hybrid nanofiber films are stacked orthogonally to assemble multidirectional strain sensors, which can distinguish the complex motion of human joints. These findings will inspire the future development and application of electrospun nanofiber-based thermoelectrics in the next-generation wearable electronics.

Piezoresistive metamaterials fabricated via 3D printing have gained increasing attention due to their high flexibility and stability, making them suitable for a wide range of applications. However, conventional isotropic and planar designs of these metamaterials restrict their sensing capabilities to uniaxial detection, significantly limiting practical utility. In this study, a 3D piezoresistive metamaterial inspired by the 3D structure of dendrites beneath human skin, achieving multidirectional and multifunctional sensing capabilities is presented by controlling the distribution of different lattice micro cell types. These anisotropic piezoresistive metamaterials can be successfully fabricated by one-step digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. When integrated with augmented reality (AR) systems, these customizable metamaterials enable seamless object interaction workflows encompassing 3D spatial localization, capture, and recognition through real-time virtual feedback. Furthermore, a digital twin system is implemented to enhance real-time visual feedback in AR and deliver an immersive operating experience for the user. This synergistic combination of anisotropic design and one-step 3D printing establishes a novel paradigm for developing metamaterials with multifunctional, multiregional, and multidirectional sensing capabilities.

Flexible strain-sensitive sensors have been receiving intensive attention in many aspects ranging from human motion capture to health-related signal monitoring. However, the fabric strain sensor with multi-directional sensing capability, besides having a wide strain range and high response sensitivity, is still very challenging and deserves further exploration. Here, we have prepared a wearable cotton fabric strain sensor uniformly decorated with single-walled carbon nanotubes through a facile solution process. The unique hierarchical architecture of the cotton fabric woven from twisted yarns combined with the conductive carbon nanotube network endows the fabric strain sensors with attractive performance, including low detection limit, large workable strain range, fascinating stability and durability, excellent direction-dependent strain response, and good air permeability. The strain sensor without polymer encapsulation can not only monitor subtle and large multi-directional motions but also fit well to the human body with satisfactory comfort, demonstrating its potential application in wearable electronics and intelligent clothing.

Flexible bending sensors are crucial components of flexible/wearable electronics. However, their broad application is restricted by their difficulty in sensing different bending directions and, more importantly, their significant output attenuation after long cycles. Herein, a new design of an All-in-One piezoelectric bending sensor is proposed, in which double-deck, cross-over 3D interdigital microelectrodes (silver nanowires (Ag NWs)) are embedded in a piezoelectric polymer film (poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (P(VDF-TrFE))). The piezoelectric film with the embedded 3D microelectrodes exhibits a high anisotropy coefficient ( η 90 ∘ ${{\eta }_{90^\circ }}$ > 1) based on dual piezoelectric modes ( d 31 and d 33 ), which renders it more sensitive to different bending directions. More importantly, the homogeneous interconnected interface and heterogeneous microinterlocked interface formed inside the sensor significantly enhance its interface mechanical properties, with at least a tensile strength of 51 MPa, a shear strength of 28 MPa, and an interfacial toughness of 300 J m −2 , which are nearly two orders of magnitude greater than those of conventional sandwich architectures. The prepared All-in-One sensor shows an extremely stable piezoelectric output over as many as 16 00 000 bending cycles, which represents a remarkable breakthrough. Furthermore, a single sensor can be used to remotely control the multidirectional motion of a smart car, demonstrating enormous potential in practical applications.

Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are promising materials for soft actuations . LCE composites (LCECs), via the inclusion of fillers into LCEs, bring diverse functionalities and stimuli-responsive capabilities. It is still a challenge to improve the mechanical properties of LCEC and ensure that the material can perform reversible transformations. Here we present a cost-effective LCEC design and fabrication method by dispersing continuous carbon fibers and carbon nanotubes into LCEs, forming a new type of LCEC actuator. We found that through adjusting the angle (such as 45° and 90°) between the carbon fiber and the stretching axis of LCEC matrix, complex deformable geometries can be easily achieved including bending and twisting structures with enhanced storage modulus (400.9 MPa at 25 °C). Furthermore, the LCEC actuators could be driven by various stimuli including heat (120 °C), light (800 mW cm −2 ), and electricity (2.0 V). As a result, our new LCEC actuator outperforms other LCE actuators by having the largest number of morphing geometries and stimulus-responsive modes. Our LCEC design and manufacturing strategy represents a promising general methodology that can be easily extended to other continuous fibers (such as glass fiber, aramid fiber , etc.) filled LCECs, bringing even rich shape-changing capabilities that are needed for soft robots and beyond.

Hydroxide exchange membranes (HEMs) are important materials for energy conversion devices in hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFCs). This study details a series of multi-directional branched HEMs containing octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane (OCSi). The OCSi structure allows for the establishment of continuous OH − conducting channels within the membrane while addressing the prevailing trade-off between ionic conductivity and size/mechanical stability. Thanks to the formation of fine microphase-separated morphologies, the quaternized poly(octaphenylcyclotetrasiloxane-terphenyl-piperidinium) (QPOCSi-TP-2) membrane has high conductivity (152.9 mS cm −1 at 80 °C), excellent mechanical stability (tensile strength of 76.5 MPa) and outstanding chemical stability (1500 h in 5 M NaOH at 80 °C). In H 2 /O 2 cell tests at 80 °C, the peak power density of the QPOCSi-TP-2 membrane reaches 1.26 W cm −2 . During 120 h of operation at 100 m A cm −2 , the voltage degradation rate of the cell is 1.02 mV h −1 .

Owing to the multi-dimensional complexity of human motions, traditional uniaxial strain sensors lack the accuracy in monitoring dynamic body motions working in different directions, thus multidirectional strain sensors with excellent electromechanical performance are urgently in need. Towards this goal, in this work, a stretchable biaxial strain sensor based on double elastic fabric (DEF) was developed by incorporating carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes(c-MWCNTs) and polypyrrole (PPy) into fabric through simple, scalable soaking and adsorption-oxidizing methods. The fabricated DEF/c-MWCNTs/PPy strain sensor exhibited outstanding anisotropic strain sensing performance, including relatively high sensitivity with the maximum gauge factor (GF) of 5.2, good stretchability of over 80%, fast response time < 100 ms, favorable electromechanical stability, and durability for over 800 stretching–releasing cycles. Moreover, applications of DEF/c-MWCNTs/PPy strain sensor for wearable devices were also reported, which were used for detecting human subtle motions and dynamic large-scale motions. The unconventional applications of DEF/c-MWCNTs/PPy strain sensor were also demonstrated by monitoring complex multi-degrees-of-freedom synovial joint motions of human body, such as neck and shoulder movements, suggesting that such materials showed a great potential to be applied in wearable electronics and personal healthcare monitoring. Keywords:double elastic fabric;carbon nanotube;polypyrrole;multidirectional;strain sensor;complicated human motions detection

Multimodal tactile perception is crucial for advancing human–computer interaction, but real-time multidimensional force detection and material identification remain challenging. Here, a finger-shaped tactile sensor (FTS) based on the triboelectric effect is proposed, capable of multidirectional force sensing and material identification. The FTS is composed of an external material identification section and an internal force sensing section. Three materials are embedded into the surface of the silicone shell in the fingerpad, forming single-electrode sensors for material identification. In the force sensing section, the silicone shell's outer surface is coated with conductive silver paste as a shielding layer. The inner wall has four silicone microneedle arrays and a silicone bump, while five silver electrodes are coated on the internal polylactic acid skeleton. The components connect via interlocking structures near the fingernail, allowing localized contact and separation between the silicone shell and skeleton, enabling force direction detection through signals from the five electrodes. Additionally, the outer sensors achieve 98.33% accuracy in recognizing 12 materials. Furthermore, integrated into a robotic hand, the FTS enables real-time material identification and force detection in an intelligent sorting environment. This research holds great potential for applications in tactile perception for intelligent robotics.

Multidirectional monitoring is highly expectable for stretchable strain sensors by which the randomly orientated cracks or the maximum strain of all directions need to be accommodated. Many current types of research exploit laminated sensors and rosette designs to obtain the desired behavior in several discrete directions. However, this can lead to complex fabricating and resolving processes, as well as significant measurement errors. Our work proposes an isotropic stretchable strain (ISS) sensor that utilizes the in-plane curved sensing film from graphene/silver nanowires (AgNWs), which exhibits uniform sensitivity in all directions within 30∘ and the potential extending to 360∘. The ISS sensor, whose curved shape is optimized based on splines and the quantitative sensing model, is fabricated by a flash stamp machine and followed by vacuum filtration. Experimental results show that the ISS sensor possesses equivalent sensing properties in 30∘ with excellent linearity and durability. Thus our customized sensor is applied to multidirectionally monitor the stretchable surface without consideration for the sensor orientation and the resolving process. Most importantly, the ISS sensor and its design method provide an efficient route for future sensor design with expected properties, not limited to isotropy.

Multidirectional strain sensors are of technological importance for wearable devices and soft robots. Here, we report that flexible materials capable of multidirectional anisotropic strain sensing can be constructed leveraging diffusion-induced infiltration of monomers and in situ polymerization of metal ion-containing double network hydrogels in and on the surface of micro-corrugated chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystal/glucose films. Integrating the micro-corrugated cellulose nanocrystal/glucose chiral nematic films with ionic conductive hydrogels of PAA-co-AAm/sodium alginate/Al 3+ endows the materials with multidirectional mechanoelectrical resistivity and mechanochromism anisotropy. The anisotropic responses to multidirectional stress, which are sensitive, swift and reversible, are owing to the synergistic effects of micro-corrugation, helicoidal arrangement, one-dimensional photonic bandgap, mobility of Al 3+ ions, and water-rich architecture. These flexible materials hold promises as multidirectional and multimodal anisotropic strain sensors in wearable electronics and soft robotic applications.

Flexible force sensors are of great interest in the fields of healthcare, physiological signals, and aircraft smart skin applications because of their compatibility with curved surfaces. However, the simultaneous detection of multidirectional forces remains an engineering challenge, despite the great progress made in recent years. Herein, we present the development of a flexible capacitive force sensor capable of efficiently distinguishing normal and sliding shear forces. A two-layer electrospun polyimide/graphene oxide (PI/GO) nanofiber membrane is used as the dielectric layer, which is sandwiched between one top electrode and four symmetrically distributed bottom electrodes. This composite membrane has an improved dielectric constant, a reduced friction coefficient, and good compressibility, leading to superior performance that includes high sensitivity over a wide operational range with measured results of 3 MPa−1 for 0–242 kPa (0–2.2 N) and 0.92 MPa−1 for 242–550 kPa (2.2–5 N) in the normal direction; and better than 1 N−1 for 0–3 N in the x- and y-axis directions. The system also has a low detection limit of 10 Pa, fast response and recovery times of 39 ms and 13 ms, respectively, a good cyclic stability of 10,000 cycles at a pressure of 176 kPa, and promising potential for use in high-temperature environments (200 °C). Moreover, a prototype 4 × 4 sensor array has been fabricated and successfully used in a robotic system to grasp objects and operate a wireless toy car. As such, the proposed system could offer superior capabilities in simultaneous multidirectional force sensing for applications such as intelligent robots, human–machine interaction, and smart skin.
