Multimode stimulated luminescence of LiNbO3:Pr3+/ZnS:Cu/PDMS flexible films

Lidong Wang,Xueting Fu,Peng Du,Hai Jiang,Laihui Luo

The versatility of emission modes and colors in flexible films is essential for broadening their potential applications. This study presents the development of a multi-mode luminescent flexible film by integrating ZnS:Cu and LiNbO3:Pr3+ powders into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The ZnS:Cu and LiNbO3:Pr3+ powders are uniformly distributed in the PDMS matrix. The effect of the LiNbO3:Pr3+ content on the photoluminescence (PL), electroluminescence (EL), mechanoluminescence (ML), thermoluminescence (TL), and photostimulated luminescence (PSL) properties of the films has been investigated. The PL colors of the LiNbO3:Pr3+/ZnS:Cu/PDMS flexible films due to the distinct intrinsic emissions of ZnS:Cu and LiNbO3:Pr3+ can be changed by altering the excitation wavelength. An appropriate content of the LiNbO3:Pr3+ powder introduces PSL into the flexible films, while the films demonstrate excellent EL and ML performance, along with multicolored TL emissions, including red and green. This research offers a novel approach to enhancing flexible electronic displays, EL devices, and optical anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Visible and near-infrared emission of lead-free Cs3Cu2I5:Bi perovskite by valence state regulation for optical anti-counterfeiting coatings

Qi-Hua Yang,Han-Qi Wei,Shu-Juan Zhao,Gui-Hua Li,Xuan Liu,Le Fu,Zhi-Wei Luo,Jia-Yong Si,Ge-Mei Cai

In recent years, the proliferation of counterfeit products has led to increased concerns about anti-counterfeiting technology, with traditional single-mode fluorescence methods proving insufficient due to their susceptibility to replication. The new copper-based halide materials have shown great potential in the field of multi-mode anti-counterfeiting due to their unique structure, excellent luminescence performance, and high defect tolerance. In this work, near-infrared emission of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 was achieved for the first time through Bi doping. By exploiting the dual emission center characteristics of the resulting Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 :Bi, we demonstrated its excitation wavelength-dependent emission. It was then mixed with cyclohexane to prepare an advanced fluorescent anti-counterfeiting coating for screen printing, enabling high-precision pattern printing onto various substrates. The resulting anti-counterfeiting patterns exhibit excellent weather resistance, remaining virtually unchanged after 60 days at room temperature. This study lays the foundation for expanding the emission range of Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 and adjusting multi band emission, and confirms its potential application in the field of multi-mode anti-counterfeiting.

Zhenbin Wang,Zhidong Ma,Weisheng Liu,Hui Zhou,Wenxiang Wang,Jika Sang,Shanshan Zhao,Zhaofeng Wang

The performance and functionality of luminescent materials should be continuously developed to meet the demands of high-level information safety. In this work, a theoretical strategy for multi-mode luminescent color self-evolution in one structure was proposed by hierarchically utilizing the energy transfer processes from traps to luminescent centers. The strategy was further employed for experimental design, and an efficient luminescent structure of CaAl2O4:Eu2+,Mn2+,Er3+,Nd3+ with multi-mode luminescent color self-evolution behaviors was developed. The anticounterfeiting device based on CaAl2O4:Eu2+,Mn2+,Er3+,Nd3+ herein possessed extremely high security level with attractive performance. In addition, the CaAl2O4:Eu2+,Mn2+,Er3+,Nd3+ was confirmed to have energy storage and controllable release activities, based on which high-value encryption devices with dynamic information display were developed.

Multi-Mode Luminescence in Smart Near-Infrared Cr3+/Pr3+ Codoped SrGa12O19 Phosphors Induced by Three Distinct Excitation Mechanisms

Yaowu Wang,Nan Lin,Yiheng Yue,Jianfeng Wang,Yinyan Li,Zhenping Wu,Shiqing Xu,Gongxun Bai

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphors have emerged as novel luminescent materials across various fields due to their unique advantages of high penetration and invisibility. However, there is currently a lack of intelligent NIR phosphors that can achieve multimode stimuli responsive for sensing applications. In this study, we employed a high-temperature solid-phase reaction to incorporate Pr3+ into Cr3+-doped gallate magnetite SrGa12O19 phosphor, yielding a multimode luminescent intelligent NIR phosphor. Also, due to the inherent cation vacancies and defects in the matrix, the material not only exhibits brighter photoluminescence but also exhibits distinct NIR mechanoluminescence at a lower load. Notably, Pr3+-doped SrGa12O19:Cr3+ also demonstrates extended persistent luminescence and thermoluminescence effects. Finally, we combined the phosphor with the blue LED chip to develop a new multifunctional NIR pc-LED. Leveraging NIR’s unique penetrating ability, it can persist in biological tissues for prolonged periods, enabling optical inspection and offering a novel approach to password protection for anticounterfeiting measures. This intelligent NIR phosphor solution significantly expands the application potential of NIR light in food quality assessment and analysis.

Mn–Mn Dimers Induced Multimode Emitters in Mn2+-Activated AZn4(PO4)3 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with Unique [Zn4PO12] Chains and [ZnOn] Groups

Qin Liu,Peipei Dang,Guodong Zhang,Hongzhou Lian,Ziyong Cheng,Guogang Li,Jun Lin

Mn2+-doped luminescent materials play a significant role in a variety of fields, including modern lighting, displays, and imaging. Mn2+ exhibits a broad and adjustable emission, hinging on the local environment of the crystal field and the interaction of the 3d5 electrons. However, it is still a challenge to realize the precise control of the emission of Mn2+ ions due to site-prior occupation in a specific lattice. Here, the formation of Mn–Mn dimers is proposed to be an effective strategy to design a novel red emission. Multimode emitters in Mn2+-activated AZn4(PO4)3 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with unique [Zn4PO12] chains and [ZnOn] groups are observed to achieve regular green and unusual red emissions. KZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ shows broad dual emissions at 542 and 608 nm, attributed to [MnO4] and [Mn2O7] dimers, respectively. While K is replaced with Rb and Cs, the Zn ions form [ZnO4] tetrahedra and [ZnO5] octahedra. RbZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ exhibits a broad red emission at 618 nm, ascribing to [Mn2O7] and [Mn2O8] dimers. CsZn4(PO4)3:Mn2+ also displays a broad orange-red emission at 608–620 nm with increasing doping levels, deriving from energy transfer from [MnO5] to [Mn2O7] and [Mn2O8] dimers. This work provides a framework for creating novel red emissions from Mn2+-doped luminescent materials.

Stimuli responsive lanthanide ions doped layered piezophotonic microcrystals for optical multifunctional sensing applications

Yingjie Zhao,Gongxun Bai,Youqiang Huang,Yuan Liu,Dengfeng Peng,Liang Chen,Shiqing Xu

Multifunctional optical sensing devices are of decisive significance to the miniaturization and integration of optoelectronic devices. However, the development of stimuli responsive materials with multimode emission is still in the early stage, limiting the application of integrated optical sensing. Here, we report the multimode emission piezophotonic material fabricated by doping lanthanide ions into the quaternary piezoelectric semiconductor SrZnOS, achieving multimode emission under various stimulus/excitation sources (ultraviolet, near-infrared laser, X-ray, and force), due to its multifunctional optical properties . Particularly the mechanoluminescence has been realized covering both the visible and near-infrared spectral bands . Optical stress sensing was achieved by establishing a quantitative relationship between force and light conversion. Moreover, near-infrared mechanoluminescence can effectively resist the interference of ambient light. The temperature detection performance and the power-dependent color tunability of the sample were also evaluated for multifunctional applications. All the results indicate that the developed multifunctional optical materials with inherent multimode light-emitting characteristics have the potential in advanced optical sensing and anti-counterfeiting applications.

High-level information encryption based on optical nanomaterials with multi-mode luminescence and dual-mode reading

Lin Liu,Shanshan Peng,Peng Lin,Ruoping Wang,Hongyun Zhong,Xia Sun,Liang Song,Junpeng Shi,Yun Zhang

Diverse phosphors have received widespread attention because of their ability to provide enhanced information security. However, these phosphors usually emit in the visible region and the emissions are discernible with human eyes, which, along with the single luminescence mode and reading manner, adversely affects the information security. This work exhibits a novel series of optical nanomaterials, Mg8Lu2Ge6O23:Bi3+/Yb3+/Ln (MLGB–Yb/Ln, Ln = Tm3+, Ho3+, and Er3+), with multi-mode luminescence and dual-mode reading characteristics and their suitability for information encryption is demonstrated. MLGB–Yb/Ln displays visible down-conversion luminescence, visible up-conversion luminescence (UCL), and invisible ultraviolet-B (UVB) persistent luminescence (PersL). The visible luminescence is directly detectable by human eyes (visible reading method); however, because the invisible UVB PersL cannot be perceived by human eyes, it can be used for information encryption. Interestingly, the encrypted information can be read by a charge-coupled device camera to decode the optical information (invisible reading method). More importantly, the unique optical properties ensure that MLGB–Yb/Ln behaves similarly to common UCL materials when viewed by humans, which further enhances the level of information encryption provided by invisible UVB PersL. Based on MLGB–Yb/Ln, we designed deceptive information encryption patterns to show the advantage of using these materials for information encryption.

Achieving opto-responsive multimode luminescence in Zn1+xGa2−2xGexO4:Mn persistent phosphors for advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption

Dangli Gao,Qingqing Kuang,Feng Gao,Hong Xin,Sining Yun,Yuhua Wang

Optical characteristics of phosphors, e.g. color output, decay process and external field stimulation mode (including opto-, thermo- and mechano-stimulation), play an important role in the areas of information storage, anti-counterfeiting and bio-imaging applications. Persistent luminescence (PersL) phosphors are particularly suitable for such applications owing to their multimodal luminescence features such as photoluminescence (PL), PersL, photostimulated luminescence and mechanoluminescence. However, conventional PersL phosphors are suffering from a huge challenge to develop a single material for multicolor anti-counterfeiting. Herein, the Zn 1+ x Ga 2−2 x Ge x O 4 :Mn (0 ≤  x  ≤ 1) solid solution phosphors are synthesized, which can emit from green to yellow, golden, pink, and red PL. In addition, the phosphors also show the thermo-mechano-opto-stimulated green PersL after irradiation of a UV 254/365 nm lamp. Based on the multimode and multicolor luminescence features, the advanced anti-counterfeiting and optical data storage are designed. Results show that the multimodal luminescence feature with high information capacity can be conveniently identified by using a luggable ultraviolet lamp or NIR laser diode. This extraordinary material will make anti-counterfeiting more sophisticated and show advanced security in the applications of data encryption.

General Synthesis of Carbon Dot-Based Composites with Triple-Mode Luminescence Properties and High Stability

Ping Liang,Yihao Zheng,Fengru Liu,Huaiyu Shao,Chaofan Hu,Bingfu Lei,Xuejie Zhang,Yingliang Liu,Jianle Zhuang,Xingcai Zhang

Carbon dot (CD)-based luminescent materials have attracted great attention in optical anti-counterfeiting due to their excellent photophysical properties in response to ultraviolet-to-visible excitation. Hence, there is an urgent need for the general synthesis of CD-based materials with multimode luminescence properties and high stability; however, their synthesis remains a formidable challenge. Herein, CDs were incorporated into a Yb,Tm-doped YF3 matrix to prepare CDs@YF3:Yb,Tm composites. The YF3 plays a dual role, not only serving as a host for fixing rare earth luminescent centers but also functioning as a rigid matrix to stabilize the triplet state of the CDs. Under the excitation of 365 nm ultraviolet light and 980 nm near-infrared light, CDs@YF3:Yb,Tm exhibited blue fluorescence and green room-temperature phosphorescence of CDs and upconversion luminescence of Tm3+, respectively. Due to the strong protection of the rigid matrix, the stability of CDs@YF3:Yb,Tm is greatly improved. This work provides a general synthesis strategy for achieving multimode luminescence and high stability of CD-based luminescent materials and offers opportunities for their applications in advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Optical activity levels of metal centers controlling multi-mode emissions in low-dimensional hybrid metal halides for anti-counterfeiting and information encryption

Qiqiong Ren,Guojun Zhou,Yilin Mao,Nan Zhang,Jian Zhang,Xian-Ming Zhang

In-depth insight into the electronic competition principles between inorganic units and organic ligands proves to be extremely challenging for controlling multi-mode emissions in low-dimensional hybrid metal halides (LHMHs). Herein, an efficient blue emission from organic ligand was engineered in (DppyH)2MCl4 (Dppy = diphenyl-2-pyridylphosphine, M = Zn2+, Cd2+) due to the reverse type I band alignment constructed by optically inert units with nd10 shell electrons. By contrast, the optically active [MnCl4]2− with semi-fully filled 3d5 shell electrons prompts the band alignment of type II, resulting in the narrowband green emission of Mn2+, along with an energy transfer from DppyH+ to [MnCl4]2−. Beyond that, the band alignment of (DppyH)SbCl4 is further reversed to type I due to the strong stereochemical activity of 5s2 lone-pair electrons, resulting in the triplet-state (3P1 → 1S0) self-trapped exciton (STE) emission of [SbCl4]−. The conclusion is that the electronic configurations of metal centers govern the optical activity levels of inorganic units, which in turn controls the multi-mode emissions by maneuvering the band alignments. This research provides an enlightening perspective on the multi-mode emissions with tunable photoluminescence and resulting electronic transitions of LHMHs, whose derived emitters can be employed in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Scalable synthesis of phosphorescent SiO2 nanospheres and their use for angle-dependent and thermoresponsive photonic gels with multimode luminescence

Wang Changxing,Ning Yayun,Yue Yifan,Du Guoli,Xie Yuechi,Li Jianing,Bibi Nazia,Wen Xiaoxiang,Li Jianing,Yang Sen,Lu Xuegang

Developing room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials with microscale periodic structures presents a promising prospect for future optical applications but remains challenging due to the complex integration of luminescent and structural components. Herein, we present a strategy for large-scale production of RTP silica nanospheres (RTP SiO 2 NPs) with a low dispersity in size using a modified Stöber method, where organic molecules are embedded in silica networks and subsequently undergo in-situ carbonization, aggregation and crystallization to form phosphorescent carbon dots under high-temperature calcination. These NPs can self-assemble into photonic crystal (PC) structures, enabling the straightforward integration of structural color, fluorescence (FL) and RTP to achieve multimodal luminescent properties. The angle-dependent photonic bandgap (PBG) generated by the physical periodic structure modulates light propagation in RTP PC gels, creating FL and RTP angle-dependent chromatic responses. Temperature-induced refractive index changes between SiO 2 and the liquid matrix further enable dynamic control of light-scattering states, significantly altering transmittance and emission intensities of FL and RTP. This fusion of physical photonic structures with luminescence offers potential approach for constructing advanced multimodal luminescent devices.

Four-Dimensional Dynamic Multicolor Emission in MgGa2O4:Tb3+ Through Orthogonal Modulation of Excitation Wavelength, Time, Temperature and Pressure

Mingxin Zhou,Panlai Li,Xiaoxue Huo,Xue Meng,Hao Suo,Guodong Zhang,Xiaojun Wang,Zhijun Wang

Multimodal luminescence materials exhibiting multiple stimulus responses are highly favored in optical anti-counterfeiting and information encryption applications. However, this static luminescence under fixed stimuli remains vulnerable to replication. The development of dynamic multicolor luminescent materials offers an effective solution, yet integrating multidimensional dynamic luminescence within a single material remains challenge. Here, this work introduces Tb 3+ capture centers into the self-activated luminescent host MgGa 2 O 4 -featuring an alternating layered structure and abundant defects-to construct efficient energy transfer channels. This design enables not only static multicolor luminescence dependent on concentration and interplanar spacing, but also, for the first time, stable dynamic multicolor luminescence modulated by four independent dimensions: excitation wavelength, time, temperature, and pressure. In particular, the time domain reveals dynamic photoluminescence with tunable evolution rates, as well as visible–near-infrared dual-band persistent luminescence. These unique optical properties provide strong potential for advanced anti-counterfeiting and visual temperature/stress sensing. Moreover, this work proposes a 4D coupled dynamic encryption system that integrates self-destruction protection and memory fault-tolerance, thereby greatly reducing the risk of information leakage. Combined experimental and theoretical analyses further elucidate the underlying mechanisms, opening new avenues for the design of multidimensional dynamic multicolor luminescent materials.
