Highly sensitive SERS substrates with multi-hot spots for on-site detection of pesticide residues

Tianhua Xie,Zijin Cao,Yuejing Li,Zhiyan Li,Fan-Li Zhang,Yingqiu Gu,Caiqin Han,Guohai Yang,Lulu Qu

Pesticide residues will be a huge threat to food security and ecological environment; therefore, there is an urgent need to achieve rapid and on-site detection of pesticide residues. Herein, a plasmonic substrate with multiple “hot spots” was fabricated by transferring three-dimensional (3D) Au nanoparticles (NPs) onto the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membrane for highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of pesticide residues. In combination with 3D-FDTD simulations, high SERS enhancement (EF = 1.2 × 10 8 ) and high detection sensitivity (LOD = 6.3 × 10 -10 M) were achieved, mainly due to the enhanced electromagnetic fields around the “hot spots”. Additionally, the PDMS-based SERS substrate held good transparency and flexibility, enabling conformal contact with non-planar surfaces and allowing the laser to penetrate the back of the analytes. Combined with a portable Raman spectrometer, the substrates holds great potential for rapid, high-sensitive, and on-site detection of contaminants in food, especially for the analyte on the nonplanar surfaces.

Ultrasensitive determination of lipid soluble antioxidants in food products using silver nano-tripod SERS substrates

Qian Zhang,Zhenglin Liu,Lingfeng Duan,Zijin Cao,Bin Wu,Lulu Qu,Caiqin Han

Lipid soluble antioxidants can effectively prevent the oxidative deterioration of oils and fat-containing foods. However, long-term consumption of foods containing antioxidants may damage human health. Herein, a highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method was explored for the detection of antioxidants by constructing multi-hot silver nano-tripod (AgNT) substrates. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) calculation demonstrated that the “hot spots” of AgNT structures are widely spread, which endows the substrate with excellent detection ability. The enhancement factors (EFs) for trans -1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPE) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) were 1.08 × 10 9 and 4.46 × 10 8 , respectively. Combined with density functional theory, AgNT substrates achieved rapid detection of four common antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and propyl gallate (PG). The limit of detection (LOD) of BHA , TBHQ and PG was 1 mg/L, and the LOD of BHT was 2 mg/L. Moreover, the substrate combined with principal component analysis can effectively identify antioxidants in fried potato chips. This substrate-based SERS method does not require complex sample pretreatments, and can identify and analyze types and contents of antioxidants added in food in a short time (2 min), providing a portable means for food safety control.

Engineered Plasmonic multi-hot spots on magnetic Nanospheres for quantitative detection of pesticide residues on food surfaces via SERS tagging analysis

Ming-Jie Wan,Yu-Ting Wu,Yan-Hui Wang,Xiao-Hang Wu,En-Ming You,An Wang,Sheng-Hong Liu,Jin-Chao Chen,Yue-Jiao Zhang,Shangzhong Jin,Fan-Li Zhang

Pesticide application ensures the yield of crops and reduces the harm of pathogenic microorganisms to the human body. However, excessive use of pesticides leads to their residues on the surface of foods, thus posing a threat to human health and the ecological environment. Herein, Fe₃O₄@Au@1,4-BDT@Au nanoparticle, as a novel three-dimensional surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, was constructed enabling the rapid and quantitative detection of pesticide residues of food surfaces combined with a portable Raman spectrometer, which integrates the advantages of multiple components, such as magnetic effect enrichment, Raman internal standard, and strong electromagnetic fields via coupling of gold nanoparticles. In practical detection, the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of thiram and malachite green are 2.5 × 10 −7  M and 10 −10  M, respectively. Furthermore, the proportion of mixed pesticides is determined by principal component analysis (PCA), which provides an effective solution for the simultaneous detection of multiple pesticide residues in complex detection conditions.
