Conversion of high moisture biomass to hierarchical porous carbon via molten base carbonisation and activation for electrochemical double layer capacitor

Ishioma Laurene Egun,Bamidele Akinwolemiwa,Bo Yin,Hai Tian,Haiyong He,Kam Loon Fow,Honglei Zhang,George Z. Chen,Di Hu

Biomass-derived carbon for supercapacitors faces the challenge of achieving hierarchical porous carbon with graphitic structure and specific heteroatoms through a single-stage thermal process that minimises resource input. Herein, molten base carbonisation and activation is proposed. The process utilises the inherent moisture of Moso bamboo shoots, coupled with a low amount of KOH, to form potassium organic salts before drying. The resultant potassium salts promote in-situ activation during single-stage heating process, yielding hierarchical porous, large specific surface area, and partially graphitised carbon with heteroatoms (N, O). As an electrode material, this carbon exhibits a specific capacitance of 327F g −1 in 6 M KOH and 182F g −1 in 1 M TEABF 4 /AN, demonstrating excellent cycling stability over 10,000 cycles at 2 A/g. Overall, this study presents a straightforward process that avoids pre-drying of biomass, minimises base consumption, and employs single-stage heating to fabricate electrode carbon suitable for supercapacitors.

Three-dimensional ordered macroporous ZIF-8 nanoparticle-derived nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons for high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries

Xinxin Ji,Qian Li,Haoquan Yu,Xiaolin Hu,Yuanzheng Luo,Buyin Li

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted considerable attention due to their ultra-high specific capacity and energy density. However, there are still problems to be resolved such as poor conductivity of sulfur cathodes and dissolution of polysulfides in organic electrolytes. Herein, a novel ZIF-8-derived nitrogen-doped connected ordered macro–microporous carbon (COM-MPC) was developed by a dual solvent-assisted in situ crystallization method within a face-centered cubic stacking sphere template, which acts as an advanced sulfur host for enhanced Li–S battery performance. Compared with the conventional predominant microporous C-ZIF-8, the unique hierarchical macro–microporous structure with nitrogen doping not only renders polysulfide intermediates enhanced entrapment by confining the effect of micropores and chemisorption of doping N atoms, but also facilitates electrolyte accessibility and efficient ion transport owing to the ordered macroporous structure. Benefitting from this, the COM-MPC@S cathode delivers a high initial specific capacity of 1498.5 mA h g−1 and a reversible specific capacity of 1118.9 mA h g−1. Moreover, the COM-MPC@S cathode exhibits 82.3% of capacity retention within 10th to 50th cycle at 0.5C and a large capacity of 608.5 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles at a higher rate of 1C, and this enhanced cycling stability and rate capability demonstrate great practical application potential in Li–S battery systems.

Hierarchical porous carbon/selenium composites derived from abandoned paper cup as Li-Se battery cathodes

Shaocun Liu,Qingping Lu,Chenhao Zhao

Paper cup composed of crude cellulose is a common waste in daily life. In this paper, hierarchical porous carbons have been successfully prepared by an initial hydrothermal treatment and subsequent activation route from abandoned paper cup, and then paper cup derived carbons are used as scaffolds to fabricate serial carbon/Se composites. The optimal composite presents unique 3D porous structure, with amorphous selenium uniformly confined into the micropores of carbon. As the cathode materials of Li-Se battery, this composite reveals an initial reversible discharge capacity of 517.2 mAh g −1 at 0.2C, and a capacity value of 431.9 mAh g −1 can be retained after 60 cycles. Even at a high rate of 4C, a capacity value of 295.8 mAh g −1 can be obtained. By comparison, the improved electrochemical performance of the optimal composite should be attributed to reasonable porous structure and effective encapsulation of amorphous selenium.

Silkworm cocoon derived N, O-codoped hierarchical porous carbon with ultrahigh specific surface area for efficient capture of methylene blue with exceptionally high uptake: kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics

Genxing Zhu,Qi Liu,Fengyi Cao,Qi Qin,Mingli Jiao

Dyes are typical water contaminants that seriously affect water quality. In this study, silkworm cocoon derived N, O-codoped hierarchical porous carbon was successively developed via a facile pre-carbonization and chemical activation method, and characterized thoroughly by SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XRD, Raman, N2 adsorption and XPS. The as-prepared N, O-HPC showed a well-developed porous structure with an ultra-high specific surface area of 2270.19 m2 g−1, which proved to be a high-efficiency adsorbent. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that MB adsorption was highly dependent on contact time, initial MB concentration, temperature and initial solution pH. However, no remarkable effects of humic acid and ionic strength were observed. In the kinetic studies, the good applicability of a pseudo-second-order kinetic model was demonstrated. The adsorption isotherm study showed that a Langmuir isotherm model can describe the experimental data much more suitably with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity value of 2104.29 mg g−1, which is among the highest in previously reported adsorbents and ascribed to multiple adsorption mechanisms including pore filling, π–π stacking interaction and electrostatic interaction between MB and N, O-HPC. Thermodynamic analyses suggested that MB adsorption onto N, O-HPC was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, the as prepared adsorbent showed highly efficient adsorption for MB in tap water and synergistic adsorption performance toward MB and MO. Therefore, N, O-HPC derived from silkworm cocoon could be considered as an efficient, novel and advantageous material for wastewater remediation.

Interconnected hierarchical porous carbon synthesized from freeze-dried celery for supercapacitor with high performance

Yingying Ma,Jinyong Tian,Liang Li,Lingtong Kong,Song Liu,Kunkun Guo,Xuli Chen

Summary With the increasing challenge of energy, resource, and environment, it is highly desired to develop renewable energy and corresponding efficient energy storage technologies basing on reproducible materials. Recently, using biomass and biotechnology to prepare electrode material for energy storage devices is gaining growing attention. Here, we use biomass, celery, as a material source and developed a new way to prepare highly qualified graphitized porous carbon. Besides, instead of direct carbonization, the celery is first freeze-dried to protect the original elements and structure of biomass. Furthermore, to sculpture more nanoscale pores in the produced material, the following carbonization process is also greatly modified by investigating proper carbonization temperature and time. Therefore, the interconnected hierarchical porous structure can be formed based on the protected original pores with size of micrometers and the newly formed pores with size of nanometers. The resulted interconnected hierarchical porous carbon is used to prepare supercapacitor electrode and exhibit excellent energy storage properties. Without any extra activating or doping process, the specific capacitance of the resulted electrode reached 350.0 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , which is 5.28 times of that of directly carbonized material. And the power density reached 8.0 kW kg −1 with the energy density maintaining 16.3 Wh kg −1 .

Mechanochemical synthesis of carbon from CO2: Mechanism for milling process-dependent morphology of carbon

Kai Wang,Yun Chen,Yangfeng Wang,Chu Liang,Hui Huang,Yongping Gan,Jun Zhang,Yang Xia,Xinping He,Wenkui Zhang

Facile, efficient, energy–saving and environmentally benign synthesis of carbon from CO 2 is desirable and critical for the large–scale utilization of greenhouse gas and carbon materials. Herein, a green, energy–saving and facile route is provided to efficiently synthesize carbon with various morphology and porosity via mechanochemical reaction of CO 2 with NaH. After 1 min ball milling, CO 2 is converted into hierarchical porous carbon . The morphology and porosity of as–synthesized carbon is found to strongly depend on ball milling conditions. The gas blowing effect and self–template of product of Na 2 CO 3 are responsible for the formation of hierarchical porous carbon. The buffering effect of Na 2 CO 3 and pores in and between carbon particles in repeated ball milling process is revealed as the key factor in determining the morphology and porosity of carbon, resulting in the morphology and porosity of carbons associated with ball milling conditions. This study provides a new avenue for green and energy–saving synthesis of carbon and efficient utilization of greenhouse gases.

Study on the preparation and electrochemical behaviors of histidine-based N-doped hierarchical porous carbon as a supercapacitor material

Chengcheng Liu,Yufeng Wang,Zhentao Bian,Yanyan Zhu,Guangzhen Zhao,Dejin Zhang,Hongyan Wang,Cong Wang,Danhong Zhou,Fajun Li

Hierarchical porous carbon materials can be obtained by etching carbonaceous materials with potassium hydroxide at high temperature. In this work, we chose the environment-friendly biomolecular galactose as the source to prepare carbon materials, histidine as the nitrogen source to improve the surface properties, and potassium hydroxide as the pore-forming agent. A series of carbon precursors were obtained via simultaneous calcination of histidine and galactose with different weight ratios under the nitrogen atmosphere. The porous carbon materials with meso/micro pores were further prepared using KOH as the activation agent. The optimal carbon material G8H1 featured with a large pore volume (1.05 cm 3 ·g −1 ) and a high proportion of mesopores (V nonmicro /V micro =1.62), large specific surface area (2040.2 m 2 ·g −1 ), high content oxygen (12.6 at%) and nitrogen (2.32 at%), and good wettability. At three electrode system, G8H1 electrode material showed excellent specific capacitance performance 312 F·g −1 in the 6 M KOH electrolyte when the current density was 0.5 A·g −1 . While symmetric supercapacitors were further assembled using 1 M Na 2 SO 4 , a capacitance of 85.4 F·g −1 at 0.05 A·g −1 was achieved with a maximal energy density of 38.43 kW·kg −1 . Overall, the hierarchical porous carbon materials derived from biomolecules galactose and histidine showed excellent specific capacitance performance, which played a positive role in expanding the raw materials of synthetic carbon materials.

Embedding CoS2 nanoparticles within hierarchically porous carbon matrix for enhanced sodium-ion storage and cyclic stability

Yin Hong,Xiao Bo,Yu Zhi-Peng,Cunha Joao,Çaha İhsan,Zhang Tian-Qi,Hou Zhao-Hui,Li Gang-Yong

Cubic phase cobalt disulfide (CoS 2 ) is recognized as a potential negative material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of its low band gap, simple synthesis process, and high capacity. Nonetheless, the challenges of slow ion diffusion and substantial volume change during cycling, resulting in inadequate rate and cycling performances, remain unresolved. Here, a porous structure is fabricated by etching electrospun carbon nanofibers, subsequently facilitating the growth of CoS 2 nanoparticles at the pore locations. A nitrogen-doped carbon layer is then applied to the surface to buffer the volumetric expansion effect of CoS 2 . The findings indicate that the carbon nanofibers establish a stable conductive network, while the porous architecture of the carbon fibers, in conjunction with the carbon coating, efficiently mitigates volumetric expansion. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) studies show the presence of an interlayer van der Waals force between the sulfur atoms in CoS 2 and the carbon atoms, which reduces the band gap, enhances the conductivity of the structure, and lowers the energy barrier of Na + migration. The as-prepared anode achieves a reversible capacity of 302.6 mAh g −1 at 3.2 A g −1 and maintains a capacity of 384.6 mAh g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 over 800 cycles, demonstrating exceptional rate performance and improved cycling stability. This work shows that the combination of hierarchical porous architecture and a unique electronic structure offers valuable insights for designing high-performance negative materials for SIBs. Preparation of high-performance, three-dimensional, hierarchical porous carbon Supercapacitor materials and high-value-added potassium Humate from cotton stalks

Tao Liu,Hanfeng Zhou,Yingying Lan,Chen Qiu,Guangming Du,Xintai Su

Although the resource utilization of organic solid waste from biomass (OSWB) has been investigated, it is difficult to completely utilize such resources using the existing methods. Therefore, the development of a comprehensive application method would be very significant. Here, a simple process using chemical oxidation of H 2 O 2 was initially developed to prepare potassium humate (HA-K) from cotton stalk peels. Subsequently, we obtained three-dimensional hierarchical porous carbon (3D-HPC) materials by carbonizing and activating the residue after HA-K extraction. Chemical oxidation achieved the effect of “killing two birds with one stone” because it increased the HA-K yield by 40% and the capacitance of the electrode based on 3D-HPC (3OCA-500-650). Compared with the electrode without chemical oxidation, the obtained 3OCA-500-650 exhibited higher specific capacitance (420 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ), enhanced an energy density (58 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 1300 W kg −1 ). This work provides a green, facile technology to achieve full utilization of OSWB, which is expected to be effective and scalable for preparing HA-K and electrochemical energy storage materials exhibiting excellent performance.

Green conversion of Ganoderma lucidum residues to electrode materials for supercapacitors

Xu Manman,Huang Yunqing,Chen Ruwei,Huang Quanbo,Yang Yang,Zhong Linxin,Ren Junli,Wang Xiaohui

There is an urgent need to find green and efficient technologies for the sustainable reuse of the Chinese medicine residues due to their abundant annual production companied with serious environment problems. Herein, we synthesized a three-dimensional hierarchically porous carbon from Ganoderma lucidum residues for the application of supercapacitor electrodes via a molten alkali treatment activation/carbonization process. The resulting porous carbon samples had large surface areas (1347.7 m 2  g −1 ), a hierarchical pore structure, and excellent capacitance and were obtained using much less corrosive activator compared with other studies. When used for supercapacitor, the Ganoderma lucidum residues–derived porous carbon electrode presented outstanding electrochemical performance, with specific capacitances of up to 365.6 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 , and cycling stability of up to 99% after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 2 A g −1 . This work broadens the application of Chinese medicine residues in the field of energy storage and provides a new avenue for high value conversion of waste resources. Graphical abstract Using Chinese Medicine Residues as precursor, a convenient activation/carbonization process is proposed to synthesize porous carbon as supercapacitor electrode materials.

Construction of sugarcane bagasse-derived porous and flexible carbon nanofibers by electrospinning for supercapacitors

Wei Chen,Huihui Wang,Wu Lan,Di Li,Aiping Zhang,Chuanfu Liu

The biomass-based carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have been regarded as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors. However, the preparation of biomass-based hierarchically porous CNFs by electrospinning without any chemical and physical activation is still challenging, especially when using the whole components of lignocellulose. Herein, a feasible way to synthesize a hierarchically porous CNF by electrospinning of the blends of acetylated sugarcane bagasse (ASCB) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) followed by carbonization is proposed. Degradation of ASCB during carbonization induced multiscale defects that led to the formation of hierarchical pores and introduced flexibility for the CNFs. The specific capacitance and areal capacitance of CNFs respectively were 289.5 F g −1 and 64.2 μF cm −2 . The flexible all-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor (ASSC) derived from the CNFs showed high power density (1.26 kW kg −1 ) and energy density (56.0 W h kg −1 ), as well as high capacitance retention and great cycling stability. This synthetic strategy provides a practicable way to utilize the whole components of lignocellulosic biomass and explore its application on high-performance flexible electrode materials.

Co0.85Se Nanoparticles Encapsulated by Nitrogen-Enriched Hierarchically Porous Carbon for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Xiang Zhang,Jun Zhou,Yuying Zheng,Dongyang Chen

Coordination compound derivates (CCDs) have been widely applied in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the functionalization of CCDs with open structure and heteroatomic doping is still challenging. Herein, an effective functionalization strategy is presented to prepare a kind of CCD, where Co0.85Se nanoparticles are encapsulated by nitrogen-enriched hierarchically porous carbon (CS/NPC) based on the heat treatment of a cobalt-complexed hexamethylolmelamine-polyvinylpyrrolidone resin (Co2+/HPR). The abundant free volume and enriched N species of the HPR are responsible for the hierarchically porous configuration and high N-doping of the composites. By controlling the content of cobalt salt and the heating rate, high specific surface area (440.7 m2 g–1), high N-doping (8.54 atom %), and suitable mass loading of Co0.85Se (55.5%) were simultaneously achieved in CS-2/NPC-5, which delivers high reversible capacity (758.5 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), outstanding rate capability (401.7 mAh g–1 at 5 A g–1), and excellent cycling durability (638.4 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1 after 200 cycles), suggesting a promising candidate for LIB anode materials.
