Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) offer numerous advantages, including compact size, tunable emission spectra, energy efficiency, and high integration potential. These features make them highly promising for various applications, such as night vision monitoring, food safety inspection, biomedical imaging, and theragnostics. All-inorganic halide double-perovskite materials, known for their large absorption cross section, excellent defect tolerance, and long carrier diffusion radius, serve as unique matrices for constructing near-infrared fluorescent materials. In this study, we successfully prepared the all-inorganic metal halide double-perovskite Cs2NaYCl6:Cr3+ using a grinding–sintering method. A small fraction of the [YCl6] octahedra within the host material’s lattice was substituted with Cr3+ ions, resulting in the creation of the Cs2NaYCl6:Cr3+ phosphor. When excited with λ = 310 nm UV light, the phosphor exhibited a broad emission range spanning from 800 to 1400 nm, covering the NIR-I and NIR-II regions. It had a broad bandwidth emission of 185 nm and achieved a fluorescence quantum yield of 20.2%. The unique broadband emission of the phosphor originates from the weak crystal field environment provided by the Cs2NaYCl6 host matrix, which enhances the luminescence properties of the Cr3+ ions. To create NIR pc-LEDs, the phosphor was encapsulated onto a commercially available UV LED chip operating at 310 nm. The potential application of these NIR pc-LEDs in night vision imaging was successfully validated.

In recent years, broadband near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has attracted widespread research attention. However, the development of broadband NIR-emitting phosphors with superior thermal stability under excitation by near-ultraviolet or blue LED chips remains a challenge. Furthermore, silicon nanostructured materials exhibit unique photoelectric properties and environmentally friendly characteristics. While the study of crystalline silicon nanoparticles has garnered significant attention, research on amorphous structures remains limited. In this study, we synthesized amorphous silicon nanoparticles (a-Si NPs) with a wide near-infrared emission ranging from 600 nm to 1000 nm, achieved through a sol–gel derived polymer and a subsequent heat treatment process. The surface of a-Si NPs was effectively passivated by secondary annealing, resulting in enhanced near-infrared emission. Additionally, these nanoparticles displayed a NIR fluorescence emission peak at 812 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 169 nm, alongside remarkable thermal stability. Consequently, the integrated NIR pc-LED device demonstrated outstanding night vision imaging capabilities. As an accurate fingerprint developer, it provides enhanced imaging on various substrates to reveal detailed features. The findings suggest that the a-Si NP phosphor has considerable potential for applications in night vision imaging and could make significant contributions to fingerprint detection technology. This research provides a valuable reference for the exploitation and further development of amorphous silicon-based optical materials.

Broadband near-infrared light (NIR) near 800 nm has broad application prospects in food detection and night vision monitoring. Compared with NIR chips, NIR phosphors have distinct advantages, including low cost, a mature synthesis process, and tunable combination. However, at present, oxide NIR phosphors have some disadvantages, such as a narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM), poor thermal stability, and low photoelectric efficiency. Herein, K 3 ScF 6 :Cr 3+ NIR phosphors with a cubic structure were synthesized using the hydrothermal method. These phosphors can be effectively excited by blue light (430 nm) and red light (630 nm), leading to a broadband Cr 3+ emission from 650 nm to 950 nm with a large FWHM of 430 nm. They also exhibit excellent thermal stability and retain 87.3% of their initial intensity at 150 °C. Under a driving current of 100 mA, their photoelectric efficiency can reach 9.315% of that of fabricated NIR light-emitting diodes (NIR-LED). An NIR-LED device based on this phosphor can thus be implemented in night vision imaging systems.

Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has the advantages of instant responsiveness, non-destructiveness and high signal-to-noise ratio, and has broad application prospects in night vision security monitoring, indoor agriculture, biomedical imaging and photodynamic therapy, etc. NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) as a NIR light source, have the advantages of compact size, broadband emission, high efficiency, readily available LED chips as excitation light sources, tunable emission spectrum, and excellent prospects for industrial manufacture. However, the service life of traditional organic packaging materials is greatly reduced over time due to heat accumulation and accelerated aging, especially when operated under high-power irradiation. To overcome this drawback, we successfully prepared Ba 2 NaNb 5 O 15 :Cr 3+ ,Yb 3+ nanocrystals embedded in stable and transparent glass-ceramics by a two-stage process that involves an melt-quenching followed by a re-crystallization heat-treatment. Under 460 nm excitation, the glass-ceramics exhibited a 700–1200 nm broadband NIR emission that originated from the Cr 3+ -activating centers and a sharp line emission near ∼980 nm that originated from the Yb 3+ -activating centers, with a PLQY was ∼43.7 %. A NIR pc-LED light source device with a direct contact structure between transparent glass-ceramic and a blue chip was prepared, and the application potential of the NIR light source in night-vision imaging was verified.

Nowadays, near-infrared (NIR)-emitting luminescence materials with broad application prospects have drawn great attention. SrGa12O19:Cr3+ is a new type of solid light source material that emits NIR light with wide application prospects. However, the narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) restricts its further multifunctional applications. Therefore, we propose a novel methodology to increase the FWHM by artificially adjusting the strength of the crystal field by doping Sc3+ ions. By employing Rietveld refinement results, parameters evolution and Raman spectra, Sc3+ ions are proved to successfully occupy the Ga3+ crystallographic sites. Combining the spectroscopy characteristics, it was confirmed that the FWHM was increased from 78 nm (127 977 cm−1) to 104 nm (96 739 cm−1) with the optimum quantum efficiency of 96.55%. In addition, the excellent thermal stability and unprecedented suitability to a 450 nm blue-chip indicate that it is a potential luminescent material candidate for fluorescence conversion NIR light-emitting diode (LED). Finally, the successful implementation of the night vision on vegetation, biological imaging of human tissue and food inspection for different pork portions illustrate the strong commonality of the method.

In this work, Li 3 Mg 2 TaO 6 :Cr 3+ phosphors were designed and synthesized by solid-phase method. Spectra show that the Cr 3+ -doped phosphors exhibit broadband emissivity in the range of 700–1200 nm, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of approximately 165 nm at wavelength excitation at 462 nm. The internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of phosphors is 63.1 %. Under a driving current of 270 mA, the output power of the device can achieve 36.2 mW. Combining Li 3 Mg 2 TaO 6 :Cr 3+ phosphor and a 460 nm blue chip, a near-infrared pc-LED was fabricated and demonstrated for night vision of objects, as well as rapid imaging of the veins of a fist.

The growing demand of high-performance near-infrared (NIR) phosphors has sparked significant globe interest. In this study, we present a thermally stable NIR-emitting fluoroperovskite phosphor, KMgF 3 :Cr 3+ , synthesized via a hydrothermal method through substitution of Mg 2+ with Cr 3+ . The physicochemical and spectroscopic properties, including crystal structure, bandgap, morphology, spectral feature, and photoluminescence thermal stability, were systematically investigated. Results reveal that KMgF 3 :Cr 3+ exhibits a broadband NIR emission spanning 600-1000 nm (peaking at 780 nm) under blue light excitation and demonstrates exceptional thermal stability, retaining 86% of its room-temperature emission intensity at 423 K. Leveraging these properties, we fabricated a prototype light-emitting diode by coupling the KMgF 3 :Cr 3+ phosphor with a blue InGaN chip. The resulting device enabled high-contrast night vision imaging and clear visualization of human palm veins, highlighting its potential for advanced spectroscopic applications.
