The ever-increasing counterfeiting issues have triggered a research upsurge in multi-modal fluorescence anti-counterfeiting materials. All inorganic metal halide double perovskites possess the advantages of facile preparation procedures and high thermal stability, which also provide suitable doping sites to regulate the emission behavior and highlight the potential for serving as multi-modal fluorescence anti-counterfeiting materials. Herein, a series of Sb 3+ , Er 3+ , and Yb 3+ solely or codoped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 are successfully prepared, and the optical properties are dependent on the doping ratio of Sb 3+ and lanthanide ions (Ln 3+ ). Notably, due to the participation of energy-transfer and cross-relaxation processes, the tri-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 (0.3%Sb 3+ -20%Er 3+ -50%Yb 3+ -Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 ) shows luminescence responses to the excitation sources with different photon energies, which is employed to construct anti-counterfeiting fluorescence patterns by combining the Sb 3+ , Er 3+ , and Yb 3+ solely or codoped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 . Besides the multi-modal luminescence behavior, NIR emission from Er 3+ and Yb 3+ can be used in the night-vision device. Remarkably, the 20%Er 3+ -doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 shows an excellent light yield of 30767 photons MeV −1 and low limit of detection (LoD) of 108 nGy s −1 , highlighting the potential in X-ray imaging. This work provides a rational route to design multi-functional materials that can be used in anti-counterfeiting, night vision, and X-ray imaging.

The exploration of high-performance near-infrared phosphors has attracted widespread attention. In this work, a brand new Rb2LiAlF6:Cr3+ (denoted as RLAF:Cr) phosphor has been constructed by the substitution of Al3+ ions with Cr3+ ions. Evidence shows that two sets of near-infrared emission bands, which originated from two types of Cr3+ sites, were observed upon blue light excitation. These emission bands merged into a wide emission band locating in the region of 650 nm–1050 nm, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 125 nm. In addition, a high quantum efficiency of 77.7% and an excellent thermal stability at 417 K, with a retention rate of 90.5% of that at room temperature (RT), were witnessed. Profiting from the luminescence properties of the NIR phosphor, clear images of biological tissues and human palm veins were obtained using a light-emitting diode (LED) as a lighting source, which was constructed using an RLAF:Cr phosphor and a blue InGaN chip. These images showed the large potential of the RLAF:Cr phosphor for night vision and bioimaging in LED devices.

The advent of near-infrared (NIR) afterglow in Cr3+-doped materials has stimulated considerable interest in technological applications owing to the sustainable emission of light with good penetrability. However, the development of Cr3+-free NIR afterglow phosphors with high efficiency, low cost, and precise spectral tunability is still an open question. Herein, we report a novel Fe3+-activated NIR long afterglow phosphor composed of Mg2SnO4 (MSO), in which Fe3+ ions occupy the tetrahedral [Mg–O4] and octahedral [Sn/Mg–O6] sites, giving rise to a broadband NIR emission spanning 720–789 nm. On account of energy-level alignment, the electrons released from the traps show a preferential return to the excited energy level of Fe3+ in tetrahedral sites through tunneling, leading to a single-peak NIR afterglow centered at 789 nm with a full-width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 140 nm. The high-efficiency NIR afterglow, showing a record persistent time lasting over 31 h among Fe3+-based phosphors, is demonstrated as a self-sustainable light source for night vision applications. This work not only provides a novel Fe3+-doped high-efficiency NIR afterglow phosphor for technological applications but also establishes practical guidance for rational tuning of afterglow emissions.

To facilitate the development of near-infrared light sources for photovoltaic and night-vision lighting applications, it is crucial to obtain novel near-infrared emitting phosphors. Herein, a novel Eu2+-activated broadband near-infrared emitting phosphor CaScBO4: Eu2+ is reported. Under 558 nm light excitation, CaScBO4: Eu2+ exhibits broadband near-infrared emission centered at 780 nm with a full width at half maxima of 147 nm. The luminescence intensity is significantly enhanced by 7-fold through a cation modulation strategy using Ba2+ for Ca2+ substitution. The mechanism of the increase of the luminescence intensity is explained in detail by the change in the symmetric stretching force of the B-O bond before and after the substitution. Finally, the Ca0.85Ba0.15ScBO4: Eu2+ phosphor was encapsulated in a 558 nm chip to form a phosphor-converted light-emitting diode device, and exploratory experiments were performed to explore the applications in night vision lighting. The results show that the phosphor has great potential for application in the field of night vision lighting.

Broadband near-infrared (NIR) light sources play a critical role in widespread applications such as advanced spectroscopy analysis and nondestructive testing. One of the most promising techniques is the fabrication of broadband NIR phosphor-converted light emitting diode (pc-LED). However, the purposeful design of a tunable ultra-broadband NIR-emitting phosphor in a single host is still a challenge. In this work, Ga 2 GeO 5 with two sites of six-coordinated [Ga1O 6 ] and five-coordinated [Ga2O 5 ] is chosen to host Cr 3+ , successfully producing tunable broadband NIR luminescence (680–1350 nm). It can be tuned largely from 828 to 970 nm with the full-width at half maximum (FWHM) varied from 208 to 258 nm just by simply adjusting the Cr 3+ -doping content. The tailoring of the Cr 3+ NIR spectral emission is ascertained to the site occupation preference and competition. The encapsulation of a prototype of NIR pc-LED with an output power of 29.5 mW@390 mA is conducted for the implementation of night-vision application. This work provides a novel broadband NIR phosphor by Cr 3+ -doping in both the six- and five-coordination field, meanwhile, further demonstrating the feasibility of discovering new host material with more than one crystallographic site for Cr 3+ to trigger tunable broadband NIR emission. Laser-driven lighting technology is a remarkable innovation in the field of solid-state lighting. High-efficiency white light sources have been commercially produced, but laser-driven near-infrared (NIR) light source has not yet been captured, which hindered the numerous optoelectronic applications such as NIR spectroscopy and imaging techniques. Inspired by the observation that laser-driven lighting could break the limited power density and achieve effective output optical power density under higher incident optical power density, here, a novel NIR MgO:Cr3+,Ni2+ phosphor-in-glass film was prepared and combined on the sapphire substrate to fabricate laser-driven NIR light source. The results show that laser-driven NIR light source based on blue laser and MgO:Cr3+,Ni2+ phosphor-in-glass film combination could achieve a NIR output optical power density of 5.3 mW mm−2, which is 5 times higher than LED-driven NIR light source based on the same MgO:Cr3+,Ni2+ phosphor-in-glass film. Finally, we successfully demonstrated the potential applications of the as-fabricated laser-driven NIR light source in the field of night vision and high-penetration imaging. This finding provides an approach to achieving high-performance NIR light sources thereby opening up a new avenue for the exploration of NIR spectroscopy technology.

Near-infrared (NIR) light attracts attention because of its promising applications in night vision, anti-counterfeiting, biosensors, and measuring food composition and freshness. However, new NIR light sources with excellent thermal stability, higher efficiency, and superior photoelectric conversion efficiency are still a significant challenge. In this study, CaZrTaGaO7:0.01Cr3+, which can convert visible light into NIR light, was synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state method, and the crystal structure, morphology, site preference, and luminescence properties were investigated. Under 460 nm blue light excitation, the phosphor produces a broadband NIR emission in the 600–1100 nm region (λmax = 829 nm), with a full width at half maximum of 178 nm, an internal quantum efficiency of 90.7%, and an excellent thermal stability of 84.8% at 423 K. A NIR light emitting diode (LED) was prepared using a 460 nm LED chip and CaZrTaGaO7:0.01Cr3+, and the new compound can produce strong NIR emission (273 mW at 100 mA) with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 11.8%. Photographed phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs) with a regular camera and captured pc-LEDs in operation in the dark. The results indicate that this material may provide a new option for high power NIR night vision and other applications.

With the increasing role of near-infrared (NIR) light sources in many fields such as food and industry, NIR emitting phosphors have flourished in recent years. In addition to the widely reported Cr 3+ -activated NIR phosphors, environmentally friendly Fe 3+ can also produce tunable broadband NIR spectra, which are expected to enrich the next generation of intelligent NIR light sources. In this work, a series of Fe 3+ -activated perovskite-type Sr 2 ScSbO 6 (SSSO) NIR phosphors were successfully prepared and an emission wavelength of 900 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 110 nm was obtained. Through the crystal field engineering strategy, the lattice site of Sr 2+ was completely replaced by Ba 2+ and Ca 2+ to obtain Ba 2 ScSbO 6 (BSSO) and Ca 2 ScSbO 6 (CSSO), and the emission peak was continuously adjusted from 840 nm to 950 nm. When the temperature increased from 300 K to 400 K, BSSO:Fe 3+ , SSSO:Fe 3+ and CSSO:Fe 3+ could maintain 69 %, 82 % and 67 % of the original luminescence intensity, respectively. The opposite crystal field dependence between Fe 3+ and Cr 3+ was shown in double-layer perovskite-type antimonate materials, which could guide us to develop Fe 3+ -activated long-wavelength emission NIR phosphors. Benefiting from the long-wavelength emission of BSSO:Fe 3+ , SSSO:Fe 3+ , and CSSO:Fe 3+ , their application potential in the field of spectral analysis and rapid nighttime recognition were successfully demonstrated.

Near-infrared phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) offer numerous advantages, including compact size, tunable emission spectra, energy efficiency, and high integration potential. These features make them highly promising for various applications, such as night vision monitoring, food safety inspection, biomedical imaging, and theragnostics. All-inorganic halide double-perovskite materials, known for their large absorption cross section, excellent defect tolerance, and long carrier diffusion radius, serve as unique matrices for constructing near-infrared fluorescent materials. In this study, we successfully prepared the all-inorganic metal halide double-perovskite Cs2NaYCl6:Cr3+ using a grinding–sintering method. A small fraction of the [YCl6] octahedra within the host material’s lattice was substituted with Cr3+ ions, resulting in the creation of the Cs2NaYCl6:Cr3+ phosphor. When excited with λ = 310 nm UV light, the phosphor exhibited a broad emission range spanning from 800 to 1400 nm, covering the NIR-I and NIR-II regions. It had a broad bandwidth emission of 185 nm and achieved a fluorescence quantum yield of 20.2%. The unique broadband emission of the phosphor originates from the weak crystal field environment provided by the Cs2NaYCl6 host matrix, which enhances the luminescence properties of the Cr3+ ions. To create NIR pc-LEDs, the phosphor was encapsulated onto a commercially available UV LED chip operating at 310 nm. The potential application of these NIR pc-LEDs in night vision imaging was successfully validated.

Cr3+-activated near-infrared (NIR) phosphors are the most promising materials for commercialization. However, the emission of most Cr3+-activated phosphors is typically located in the NIR-I region and achieving luminescence towards the NIR-II region (>900 nm) via Cr3+ doping remains challenging. This study reports a novel Cr3+-activated NaBaScSi2O7 phosphor that exhibits broadband NIR emission centred at 974 nm with a full width at half maximum of 140 nm under 493 nm blue light excitation. The emission wavelength exceeds that of most Cr3+-activated NIR phosphors. The underlying mechanism for the encouraging phenomenon is attributed to the strong charge polarisation arising from the intrinsic local coordination environment of the Cr3+ ions, as confirmed by charge differential density (CDD) and the electron localization function (ELF) analyses. The photoluminescence properties of phosphors were systematically investigated, and the performance of the fabricated NIR pc-LED device was evaluated for night vision and non-invasive imaging. Notably, the NaBaScSi2O7 phosphor displayed a bright green colour with excellent colour properties and its potential as a stable green ceramic pigment was explored.

Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) are considered promising light sources for night vision, food analysis, biomedicine, and plant growth. Yet, the application potential of this technology is vulnerable to the function degradation of the phosphors used, such as thermal quenching, which needs to be addressed urgently. Herein, the NIR phosphors K2LiMF6:Cr3+ (M = Al, Ga, In) with a cubic double-perovskite structure synthesized by a green hydrofluoric acid-free hydrothermal method exhibit outstanding thermal stability. Under 450 nm excitation, the as-synthesized K2LiMF6:Cr3+ phosphors all exhibited broadband NIR emission covering 650–1000 nm peaking at 755–780 nm. The prepared K2LiAlF6:Cr3+ phosphor shows a unique zero-thermal quenching performance (I423 K/I298 K = 102%). The comprehensive effects of a wide band gap, large thermal energy barrier, weak electron–phonon coupling effect, and high structural rigidity are responsible for the suppression of thermal quenching in this material. The output power of the NIR pc-LED device reached 285 mW at 100 mA. This series of phosphors has promise in night vision and bioimaging applications.

In recent years, broadband near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has attracted widespread research attention. However, the development of broadband NIR-emitting phosphors with superior thermal stability under excitation by near-ultraviolet or blue LED chips remains a challenge. Furthermore, silicon nanostructured materials exhibit unique photoelectric properties and environmentally friendly characteristics. While the study of crystalline silicon nanoparticles has garnered significant attention, research on amorphous structures remains limited. In this study, we synthesized amorphous silicon nanoparticles (a-Si NPs) with a wide near-infrared emission ranging from 600 nm to 1000 nm, achieved through a sol–gel derived polymer and a subsequent heat treatment process. The surface of a-Si NPs was effectively passivated by secondary annealing, resulting in enhanced near-infrared emission. Additionally, these nanoparticles displayed a NIR fluorescence emission peak at 812 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 169 nm, alongside remarkable thermal stability. Consequently, the integrated NIR pc-LED device demonstrated outstanding night vision imaging capabilities. As an accurate fingerprint developer, it provides enhanced imaging on various substrates to reveal detailed features. The findings suggest that the a-Si NP phosphor has considerable potential for applications in night vision imaging and could make significant contributions to fingerprint detection technology. This research provides a valuable reference for the exploitation and further development of amorphous silicon-based optical materials.
