The Effect of Mirid Density on Volatile-Mediated Foraging Behaviour of Apolygus lucorum and Peristenus spretus

Han Chen,Honghua Su,Shuai Zhang,Tianxing Jing,Zhe Liu,Yizhong Yang

Simple SummarySince the widespread adoption of Bt cotton in the late 1990s, the green mirid bug,Apolygus lucorum(Hemiptera: Miridae), has become one of the most important pests in cotton fields and some other crops. To manage this destructive pest,Peristenus spretus(Hymenoptera: Braconidae) has been tested in augmentative biological control. In this study, after cotton plants were damaged by different densities ofA. lucorum, the behavioral responses ofA. lucorumandP. spretusto cotton plants volatiles were evaluated, and the quality and quantity of volatiles from cotton plants were analyzed. The results demonstrated that HIPVs emitted by plants in response toA. lucorumcould be influenced by the pest density and could be identified byP. spretusas a signal of the host. Our results would help understand howP. spretusplays a role in biological control againstA. lucorum.AbstractPlants would release herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) to repel herbivores and attract natural enemies after being damaged by herbivores. In this study, after cotton plants were damaged by different densities ofApolygus lucorum, the behavioral responses ofA. lucorumandPeristenus spretusto cotton plants volatiles were evaluated, and the quality and quantity of volatiles from cotton plants were analyzed. Only when cotton plants were damaged by four bugs did bothA. lucorumandP. spretusshow an obvious response to damaged cotton plants, which indicates that cotton defense is correlated with pest density. The collection and analysis of volatiles reveals that the increase in pest density results in the emission of new compounds and an increase in the total number of volatiles with an alteration in proportions among the compounds in the blend. These changes in volatile profiles might provide wasps and mirids with specific information on host habitat quality and thus could explain the behavioral responses of parasitoids and pests. Keywords:behavior;pest;natural enemy;HIPVs;density

Caterpillar-induced rice volatiles provide enemy-free space for the offspring of the brown planthopper

Xiaoyun Hu,Shuangli Su,Qingsong Liu,Yaoyu Jiao,Yufa Peng,Yunhe Li,Ted CJ Turlings

Plants typically release large quantities of volatiles in response to herbivory by insects. This benefits the plants by, for instance, attracting the natural enemies of the herbivores. We show that the brown planthopper (BPH) has cleverly turned this around by exploiting herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) that provide safe havens for its offspring. BPH females preferentially oviposit on rice plants already infested by the rice striped stem borer (SSB), which are avoided by the egg parasitoid Anagrus nilaparvatae, the most important natural enemy of BPH. Using synthetic versions of volatiles identified from plants infested by BPH and/or SSB, we demonstrate the role of HIPVs in these interactions. Moreover, greenhouse and field cage experiments confirm the adaptiveness of the BPH oviposition strategy, resulting in 80% lower parasitism rates of its eggs. Besides revealing a novel exploitation of HIPVs, these findings may lead to novel control strategies against an exceedingly important rice pest.

Volatiles of the Predator Xylocoris flavipes Recognized by Its Prey Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) and Oryzaephilus surinamensis (Linne) as Escape Signals

Shaohua Lu,Li Yang,Zonglin Wu,Mingshun Chen,Yujie Lu

Simple SummaryThe sense of smell helps insects perform essential behaviors like finding mates and food and avoiding dangers. Predators use unique smells to locate prey, but it is less understood if prey can recognize these predator odors and use them to escape. In this study, we examined howTribolium castaneum(Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) andOryzaephilus surinamensis(Coleoptera: Silvanidae), two common pests, react to the predatorXylocoris flavipes, widely used in pest control. We found that these pests avoidX. flavipesodors, particularly the volatiles, linalool and geraniol, which decrease their attraction to food sources. These compounds show strong potential as natural repellents for pest management. The olfactory sensory system plays vital roles in daily activities, such as locating mate partners, foraging, and risk avoidance. Natural enemies can locate their prey through characteristic volatiles. However, little is known about whether prey can recognize the volatiles of their predators and if this recognition can increase the efficiency of prey escaping from predators.Xylocoris flavipesis a predator ofTribolium castaneum(Herbst) andOryzaephilus surinamensis(Linne) that has been widely used in stored pest control. Herein, we analyze the volatile components ofXylocoris flavipesand their impacts on the olfactory behavior ofT. castaneumandO. surinamensis. We found thatT. castaneumandO. surinamensispreferred blank air rather than odors ofX. flavipesandX. flavipesemissions, which significantly decreased the orientation preference ofT. castaneumandO. surinamensisto wheat.X. flavipesemits three major volatiles, including linalool, α-terpineol, and geraniol. Y-tube bioassays showed thatT. castaneumandO. surinamensiscan recognize linalool and geraniol at certain concentrations, especially at 200 μg/mL. EAG recordings verified that linalool and geraniol elicit higher olfactory responses in the two pests, but very small EAG responses were observed in the insects to α-terpineol. A further repellency evaluation also proved that linalool and geraniol are repellent to the two pests, and this repellency can be slightly enhanced by mixing them together.T. castaneumandO. surinamensiscan recognize the predatorX. flavipesby perceiving its volatiles and using them as signals for escaping. The two most potent volatiles, linalool and geraniol, may have potential values as repellents in controlling pests in these two stored products.

Attraction behaviour of Anagrus nilaparvatae to remote lemongrass (Cymbopogon distans) oil and its volatile compounds

Guo-Feng Mao,Xiao-Chang Mo,Hatem Fouad,Ghulam Abbas,Jian-Chu Mo

Utilisation of Anagrus nilaparvatae is a promising and effective method for planthoppers manipulation. Twenty-seven components of remote lemongrass (Cymbopogon distans) oil were identified by GC/MS and nine volatiles were selected for behavioural experiments. In this study, we noted that the remote lemongrass oil was attractive to female A. nilaparvatae at concentrations of 0.1 and 1 mg/L. α-Pinene, β-pinene, eucalyptol, carveol and D-carvone attracted female wasps in the dose-dependent bioassays. Blend 1 (a mixture of eucalyptol, D-carvone, carveol, α-pinene, and β-pinene with ratios of remote lemongrass oil volatiles of 625:80:11:5:3) attracted female wasps at 10 mg/L, while blend 2 (a mixture of the same five volatiles at the same loading ratio) attracted them at 0.1 and 1 mg/L. These results suggested that plant essential oils could be attractants for natural enemies to control pests. The ratios of volatiles in the mixtures affect the attractiveness of the synthetic mixtures.

Combination of functional plants conserves predators, repels pests, and enhances biological control of Aphis spiraecola in apple orchards

Zhihui Liu,Fan Wang,Yunhe Zhang,Eresbek Temir,Xiaotong Zhou,Yilei Shangguan,Donghai Zhang,Zhiping Cai

Functional plants possess the ability to attract natural enemies or repel pests, and they play an important role in ecological regulation. While most studies have focused on the impacts of individual plants or plant combinations with similar functions on pests, there is a scarcity of research on the effects of combining plants with different functions, particularly in the case of orchard pests. In this study, we combined plants ( Cnidium monnieri (L.) or Brassica napus L.) that attract predators with plants ( Ocimum basilicum L. or Mentha haplocalyx Briq.) that repel pests to determine if these combinations can enhance biocontrol of Aphis spiraecola Patch on apple trees. All four combinations reduced the A. spiraecola population on apple trees. B. napus & M. haplocalyx achieved the highest reduction rate (88.58%), followed by C. monnieri & O. basilicum (88.06%), B. napus & O. basilicum (86.11%), and C. monnieri & M. haplocalyx (79.41%). Cage exclusion tests on 29 June and 4 July 2023 showed that biocontrol services index of all combinations was significantly higher than that of the control. Rubidium marking test showed that 61.90%–71.43% of Chrysoperla sinica (Tjeder) individuals in trees had transferred from functional plants. Behavioral responses and field trapping indicated that compounds such as cis -citral, nepetalactone, caryophyllene, beta-pinene, and eugenol, which are present in repellent plants, had significant repellency against A. spiraecola . The use of functional plant combinations in apple orchards can enhance biocontrol of A. spiraecola by promoting predators and by repelling aphid. This supports the potential of functional plant combinations in agroforestry ecosystems for pest biocontrol.
