A N-doped hollow copolymer tube (NHCT) was fabricated via template-free one-pot asynchronous polymerization strategy. Discrepancies of monomer polymerization speed and their hydrophilic–hydrophobic interaction resulted in the assembly of a hollow tube having inner diameter and double wall thickness of ∼230 and 40 nm, respectively. The formation and growth mechanism of NHCT analyzed via advanced characterization revealed that the unique growth processes tuned a demarcating surface layer between inner (hydrophilic) and outer (hydrophobic) layers. The screening and recognition ability of NHCT were determined for two specific dipeptides (WW and RR) possessing great discrepancies in hydrophilicity and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory (ACE-I) activity. NHCT realized high adsorption capacity (1.57 mmol/g) and selectivity (∼1274) for hydrophilic dipeptide RR (low ACE-I activity) from the mixture of RR/WW. As a result, ACE-I activity for residual solution were enhanced about 4.1 times as compared to original solution from natural silkworm pupae protein hydrolysate. Awarding to these results and its facile and discerning ability, NHCT can be envisioned to be of great value for the separation of small functional peptides from a natural edible source.

Rationale: Diabetic wound treatment remains a central issue in global healthcare due to the unitary nature of clinical dressings, which lack systemic multifunctionality in terms of tissue adhesion, shape adaptation, hemostasis, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial abilities and promotion of tissue repair. Methods: A hydrogel dressing loaded with active molecules of traditional Chinese medicine has been developed for the treatment of infected diabetic wounds. The naturally derived multifunctional hydrogel dressing (abbreviated as CTP) composed of Carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), 3,4,5-Trihydroxybenzaldehyde (THBA), and Phlorizin (PHL) was fabricated by a simple mixing process avoiding the use of any additional cross-linking agents or functional modifications. Results: The developed hydrogel demonstrated adhesiveness, shape adaptability, swelling, photothermal responsiveness, and other desirable biological functions, including hemostatic behavior and antibacterial, antioxidant and proangiogenic activities. In a diabetic wound model, compared with Hydrosorb Gel (a commercial hydrogel wound dressing), the CTP hydrogel in combination with NIR treatment accelerated diabetic wound healing by effectively preventing infection, decreasing inflammatory response, promoting re-epithelialization, enhancing both regeneration of skin attachments (e.g., hair follicles) and deposition of collagen. It also reduced scar formation and improved the overall healing process. Conclusions: As a functional wound dressing, CTP hydrogel shows great promise in diabetic wound repair.

Chinese herb medicines own potential values in breast tumor postsurgical treatment because of their abundant resources and mild health regulating effect; while it is still a challenge to enhance their utilization and effectiveness in breast tumor therapy. Here, we propose novel natural origin microfibers by using microfluidic spinning technology for potential values in breast tumor postsurgical treatment. Premna microphylla (PM), a traditional herbal medicine from natural plant, was chosen as the main component of the microfibers, while curcumin (Cur) with good anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties was applied as the encapsulated drug. Due to chemical ion cross-linking in PM, natural origin microfibers could be continuously spun through microfluidics, which would be further woven into a mesh structure. The resultant mesh was endowed with excellent biocompatibility and inhibited properties on breast tumor cell proliferation. By further applied in in vivo experiments, it was demonstrated that the PM microfibers can effectively inhibit the breast tumor recurrence and metastasis after tumor resection surgery. Based on these features, we believe that the natural origin microfibers will broaden the way of postsurgical tumor treatment and play a unique role in biomedical fields.
