Natural rubber was commonly endowed with antimicrobial activity by adding low molecular weight biocidal agents . Herein we report a new antimicrobial rubber prepared by chemical modification. Quaternary phosphonium salt (QPs) groups were covalently immobilized onto the molecular chains of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) using halogenated acid as an intermediary. The structures of modified rubbers were confirmed while the antimicrobial activity of QP modified ENR was investigated. Results show that the ring-opening ENR and the QP modified ENR are successfully prepared. The proliferation of microorganisms tested can be effectively inhibited by using QP modified ENR. Meanwhile, the modified ENR illustrates better antimicrobial activity toward Gram-negative E. coli than Gram-positive S. aureus . This method can provide potential applications in preparing permanent antimicrobial rubbers.

Graphene is an excellent filler for natural rubber (NR) with its unique properties. However, how to improve the reinforcing effect of graphene and at the same time go green was still a great challenge. Herein, an effective green method was proposed by selecting ENR synthesized in situ as a functionalized modifier of GO, and then EGO/NR composites were produced by blending ENR/GO (EGO) with NR in the aqueous phase. The ENR as an interfacial modifier improved the polarity difference between GO and NR, which achieved a good bonding between GO and NR in the latex stage, reduced GO agglomeration, and excellent water dispersibility. In addition, the carbon-carbon double bond contained in ENR could participate in cross-linking, which enhanced the interfacial interaction between GO and rubber macromolecules. Thanks to the excellent dispersion of GO and the interfacial interaction with NR, the prepared EGO/NR composites have high comprehensive performance. When the epoxy degree of ENR was 20%, the tensile strength and tear strength of the EGO/NR composites were increased to 28.2 MPa and 32.2 N/mm, respectively. It also featured a reduced heat build-up value of approximately 2.9°C. This study is expected to provide a new thinking for improving the interfacial properties between rubber and nanomaterials.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is a potential additive for rubber enhancement. However, its poor dispersion and weak interaction with matrix limit its further application. To improve the dispersion of MoS 2 in natural rubber (NR) and enhance the interaction of MoS 2 with matrix, single-layered MoS 2 nanosheets are prepared and further modified by cysteine. The modified MoS 2 nanosheets and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) are premixed and then added into a NR/carbon black compound to obtain a NR/carbon black/ENR-modified MoS 2 nanosheets composite. The reaction between modified MoS 2 nanosheets and ENR is proved by FT-IR spectra. The modified MoS 2 nanosheets can improve the dispersion of carbon black in NR, and ENR can significantly improve the dispersion of modified MoS 2 nanosheets in the composite. The addition of ENR-modified MoS 2 nanosheets premixture can improve the abrasion resistance, increase the crosslink density and control the dynamic mechanical properties of NR. These improved properties can be attributed to the good filler dispersion and enhanced filler–matrix interaction in NR matrix.

The structures and properties of natural rubber (NR) obtained from latex with small and large rubber particles (SRP and LRP) are obviously different, while carbon black (CB)/SRP or CB/LRP composites have rarely been reported. In this work, SRP and LRP are separated from natural rubber latex (NRL). The properties of obtained NR/CB composites are systematically investigated as a function of SRP and LRP mass ratios. It shows that the nitrogen content of SRP (1.32%) is much higher than that of LRP (0.10%). Mechanical properties increase with the increase of LRP content because plenty of agglomerates exist in SRP/CB composite whereas LRP/CB composite shows a homogeneous dispersion. Furthermore, a possible model is proposed to illustrate the transformations of agglomerates during stretching and dynamic compressing process. This study provides a new perspective for the design of NR materials through the selection of rubber particles in NRL.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is widely used as an activator in the vulcanization process of natural rubber. However, due to its poor compatibility with natural rubber, a large amount of ZnO needs to use, and the unreacted ZnO can precipitate in various ways, posing significant harm to aquatic organisms and microorganisms. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the dosage of ZnO in order to minimize its environmental impact. In this study, we applied ZIF-8, a zinc-based metal–organic framework, as a vulcanization additive in natural rubber. and it was found that ZIF-8 could promote the rubber vulcanization reaction by adsorbing sulfur, promoting sulfur ring-opening, and providing different ligand interactions of Zn 2+ . Moreover, even at low usage levels of ZIF-8, it effectively reduces the amount of ZnO while simultaneously improving the mechanical properties of the samples. This work provides an effective method to reduce the amount of ZnO without sacrificing the rubber properties and provides a new idea for the application of ZIF-8 in rubber materials. Highlights ZIF-8 enhances properties of natural rubber composites with low ZnO dosages. Revealing the reason why ZIF-8 promotes the vulcanization of natural rubber. Investigation of the effect of ZIF-8 on the vulcanization properties of natural rubber.

The development of natural rubber (NR) gloves with superior antibacterial and enhanced mechanical properties is critical for safeguarding healthcare personnel. In this study, Ti-based MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets were employed for the first time as an antibacterial agent to improve the antimicrobial performance of NR. Through SiO₂ intercalation via electronic assembly, the antibacterial efficacy of MXene was significantly boosted, achieving 100 % lethality against E. coli and 90.95 % against S. aureus . Mechanistic studies revealed that silica nanoparticles primarily enhanced MXene's ability to induce physical damage and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). The positively charged MXene-SiO₂ nanosheets were then incorporated into negatively charged natural latex to form NR nanocomposites with a hierarchical MXene structure. Compared to pristine NR, the nanocomposites exhibited 100 % lethality against E. coli and 74.72 % against S. aureus with the addition of just 0.5 phr MXene-SiO₂. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of NR were enhanced, with the modulus at 50 % and 100 % strain increasing by 22 % and 15 %, respectively, while elongation at break improved to 790 %. This work not only presents a novel approach for enhancing the antibacterial and mechanical properties of NR, but also deepens the understanding of MXene's antibacterial mechanism and its potential applications in healthcare materials.

Natural rubber (NR) is in high demand due to its excellent elasticity and physical and mechanical properties, but production is limited and NR is in short supply. There is an urgent need to find new alternative rubber sources.Taraxacum kok-saghyz(TKS), as a green, renewable, widely planted and high content rubber producing plant, has shown broad application prospects. The extraction process is the key to developing efficient, green, and high-purityTaraxacum kok-saghyzNatural Rubber (TKNR) to replace NR in various applications. In this study, TKS roots were processed through repeated boiling to remove inulin, followed by alkaline treatment with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to isolate lignin and facilitate cell wall disruption. Subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis using pectinase and cellulase enabled the dissolution of root-structure carbohydrates, thereby obtained TKNR. Structural characterization of TKNR was conducted and compared with that of NR. The results showed that the combined alkaline and enzymatic extraction methodology effectively isolates TKNR from TKS roots. Structural analysis reveals that TKNR closely resembles NR, having comparable molecular weight and distribution, crystallinity, and crosslinking networks, with both polymers primarily consisting of cis-1,4-polyisoprene.

Though the non-rubber components have long been recognized to be a vital factor affecting the network of natural rubber (NR), the authentic role of non-rubber components on the network during accelerated storage has not been fully illuminated. This work attempts to clarify the impact of non-rubber components on the network for NR during accelerated storage. A natural network model for NR was proposed based on the gel content, crosslinking density, and the non-rubber components distribution for NR before and after centrifugation. Furthermore, the effect of non-rubber components on the network was investigated during accelerated storage. The results show that terminal crosslinking induced by non-rubber components and entanglements are primary factors affecting the network formation during accelerated storage. By applying the tube model to analyze the stress-strain curves of NR, we found that the contribution of the entanglements to the network formation is larger than that of terminal crosslinking during accelerated storage. The work highlights the role of non-rubber components on the network during accelerated storage, which is essential for understanding the storage hardening mechanism of NR.Keywords:natural rubber;non-rubber components;network;storage hardening

Tannic acid (TA), natural phenolic compounds abundant in many plants, exhibit low flammability and good absorbility because of multidentate properties. Based on it, a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system (AGT) that consists of ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/TA functionalized graphene (TGE) presents synergistic flame retardant and smoke suppression for natural rubber (NR) due to the dual flame retardant functions of each component. The novel AGT system is of interest to a variety of fields because of its distinct flame retardant and relatively good mechanical properties in comparison to traditional IFR system. Cone calorimeter results reveal that the AGT system could clearly change the decomposition behavior of NR and form a highly graphitized and phosphorous-containing carbonaceous structure char layer on the surface of the composites, consequently resulting in synergistic effects on the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties. Moreover, TGE endows NR composite excellent mechanical properties within an effective additive mass of AGT system.

Mechanical strength and toughness are usually mutually exclusive, but they can both appear in natural rubber (NR). Previous studies ascribe such excellent properties to highly cis stereoregularity of NR. To our surprise, after the removal of non-rubber components (NRC) by centrifugation, the strength and toughness of NR decrease dramatically. It is still a challenge for us to make out for the problem of how NRC affect the properties of NR. Our group ascribes the superior mechanical robustness of NR to NRC. To further verify such a viewpoint, we add phospholipids (phosphatidylcholines) into NR without NRC. Phosphatidylcholines construct a sacrificial network, which ruptures preferentially upon deformation to dissipate energy. Moreover, some of phosphatidylcholines participate in the vulcanization reaction, which further improves the mechanical strength and energy dissipation. As a result, the mechanical strength and toughness of samples are as high as 21.1 MPa and 49.6 kJ/m2, respectively, which have reached the same level as that of NR. Therefore, this work not only imitates the excellent mechanical robustness of NR but also further provides a rational design for elastomers with excellent mechanical robustness.

Carbon black (CB) is a principal filler in rubber industry due to its excellent reinforcing effect and low-cost. It is of significant importance but challenging to modify the inert CB for addressing the dilemma of increased energy loss raised by the addition of CB. In this work, we reported the functionalization of CB through redox polymerization of rhodanine on its surface, and utilized the modified CB as a novel reinforcement for natural rubber (NR). Polyrhodanine coated on CB can covalently couple with NR chains by capturing macroradicals and serve as an intelligent interfacial bridge between CB and NR, which greatly improves CB dispersion and strengthens interfacial adhesion in the composites. As a consequence, the energy loss of the resultant composites is remarkably decreased, showing great advantages in reducing the rolling resistance and heat build-up for tire applications.

Sulfur-cured natural rubber (NR) commonly accompanies reversion, which severely impacts the properties as well as service life of NR products. Introducing anti-reversion agents is one of the most effective ways to counteract reversion. In this work, five structurally different bis-citraconimides have been synthesized and used as anti-reversion agents for sulfur-cured NR. In detail, the differences of anti-reversion agents in the cure characteristics, cross-linked structure, physical-mechanical properties, heat build-up, and dynamic mechanical properties of sulfur-cured NR are investigated in order to elaborate on the differences in reactivity and cross-linking chemistry of anti-reversion agents. The results show that N,N′-p-phenylene-biscitraconimide (BCmB) provides the best anti-reversion performance for compound cured at 150°C, with N,N′-p-phenylene-biscitraconimide (BCpB) following closely behind. Although Perkalink 900 (1,3-bis(citraconimidomethyl)benzene: BCDB), 1,3-bis(citraconimido)isobutane (BIB), and 1,6-bis(citraconimido)hexane (BCH) are less effective than BCmB and BCpB in improving the anti-reversion performance of compound cured for a short period of time or cured at 150°C, they show better anti-reversion performance of compound cured for a longer time or cured at higher vulcanization temperature.
