Passive radiative cooling (PRC) has the potential to reduce energy demand and mitigate global warming. Polymer-dielectric radiative cooling coatings have been widely studied because of their strong emittance as well as simplicity and low cost of preparation, while the low thermal transmission has restricted their capability of radiative cooling under elevated temperature conditions. In this paper, PRC coatings consisting of highly thermally conductive boron nitride (BN) particles with different morphologies were developed by a simple drop-coating method with acrylic matrix for subambient and above-ambient passive radiative cooling. Comparing plate-like BN based-coating (PBNC) and flower-like BN based-coating (FBNC), the rod-like BN based-coating (RBNC) exhibited the optimum cooling performance, with high solar reflectance (90.7 %) and superior mid-infrared emittance (90.9 %), achieving subambient cooling of 9.71 °C. More importantly, RBNC with high thermal conductivity demonstrated superior above-ambient cooling performance, by reducing the substrate heater temperature in sunlight of approximately 13.76 °C and 8.61 °C, respectively, compared to polymethyl methacrylate and acrylic coatings. This work offers an idea to regulate the morphology of BN particles for the current material design in the field of passive radiative cooling, and opens up a new way for the cooling in subambient and above-ambient applications.

Passive radiative cooling material of cellulose by coupling inorganic nanoparticles , have demonstrated competitive advantages in sustainably cooling buildings and constructions due to their voluminous availability, biodegradability, renewability, and natural origin. However, the weak stability of cellulose-inorganic nanoparticle materials when exposed to water or external forces remains a significant challenge that impedes their practical application. In this study, we proposed an easy-to-prepare, scalable, and robust cooling cellulose composite by coupling nano-SiO 2 and cellulose acetate (CA) within cellulose fibers , using the mature pulping and paper process (filling of inorganic particles of nano-SiO 2 and subsequent sizing of polymer of CA). More importantly, the CA molecules form the strong bonding with the cellulose molecules due to the high similarity of their molecular structure, which makes CA function as a “glue” to effectively fasten nano-SiO 2 on the cellulose fibers. Correspondingly, our cellulose composite features desirable robustness and structural stability even undergoing mechanical beating and water-soaking treatments, demonstrating its excellent robustness and desirable adaptability to natural environments, such as wind and rain. As a result, despite undergoing water-soaking (for 40 days) or environmental exposure (for 90 days), the cooling cellulose composite still exhibits excellent solar reflectance (>95 %) and infrared thermal emissivity (>0.95 at 8–13 μm), enabling sub-ambient temperature (∼6.5 °C during daytime and ∼8 °C at nighttime) throughout the day. Our cooling cellulose composite demonstrates promising potential as an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and stable cooling material in our low-carbon society.

Passive radiative cooling holds promise for achieving subambient cooling without consuming energy, facilitated by emitting thermal radiation into cosmic space. However, previous approaches, focusing heavily on aligning structural scales with optical properties, have struggled with effective anticondensation, thus limiting their applicability in high-humidity or supercooled conditions. Here, we demonstrate a design that enables efficient passive radiative cooling while maintaining robust anticondensation performance, underpinned by a triple-scale structure comprising microscale polymer particles, submicrometer-scale interparticle gaps, and nanoscale pores on the particle surfaces. This design achieves an efficient sunlight reflectance of 0.98 and high mid-infrared emissivity of 0.91 driven by the triple-scale structure-enhanced Mie scattering and chemical bond vibrations in polymer materials, respectively, enabling a 10.9 °C subambient cooling under direct sunlight at ∼40% relative humidity. Notably, even at a high relative humidity of ∼70%, our design still manifests an average cooling of ∼4 °C compared to ambient temperature, quite exceeding that of traditional radiative cooling materials. This is attributed to the robust anticondensation performance characterized by a maximum droplet shedding radius of ∼47.6 μm and a condensation droplet coverage of ∼32.4%, attributed to the triple-scale structure-induced larger Laplace pressure force and smaller adhesion. Moreover, our design demonstrates robust durability, encompassing self-cleaning performance via condensing droplets, thermal stability below 500 °C, and antiultraviolet radiation above 100 h, which exhibits potential applications in thermal management in various extreme scenarios.

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) technology has garnered significant attention as a sustainable cooling solution that enables subambient cooling without additional energy input. The current design strategy for PDRC films mainly relies on composite porous matrices containing inorganic nanoparticles, which have bottleneck problems, such as low material utilization, high process complexity, and high manufacturing costs. In contrast, herein we develop a self-embedded cooling film through nonsolvent-induced phase separation, where poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles spontaneously embed within a PMMA porous matrix. Through the synergistic interaction between particles and pores, an efficient broadband solar light scattering network was constructed, yielding a high solar reflectance of up to 95%. Meanwhile, the integrated structural design enhances the vibrational modes of intrinsic chemical bonds in PMMA, thereby improving mid-infrared radiative performance and enabling a high infrared emissivity of 96%. In addition, the fabrication process is fully scalable, requiring no filler doping or post-treatment. The film delivers a temperature reduction of 15.8 °C under direct sunlight, underscoring its strong potential for practical deployment in passive radiative cooling applications.

Optimizing high solar reflectance and infrared radiation in composites faces challenges like optical imbalance and instability. This study used efficient impregnation to uniformly disperse ZrO₂ onto ordered mesoporous SBA-15. First-principles calculations revealed robust covalent bonds and charge redistribution at the ZrO₂/SBA-15 interface, yielding exceptional stability (adhesion energy: 1.91 J/m 2 ). This multi-interface structure significantly enhanced optical and thermal radiation properties. With 10 wt% Zr loading, the composite pigment achieved ultra-high solar reflectance (96.8 %, 0.3–2.5 μm) and hemispherical emissivity (0.98, 8–13 μm). The work clarifies the link between atomic-scale interface interactions and macroscopic optical/thermal properties, providing foundational insights for designing stable, high-performance composites for optical and thermal management.

Traditionally, the passive radiative cooling materials (PRCMs) researches focus on optimizing the cooling power by spontaneously increasing sunlight reflectivity and infrared emissivity. However, the resultant overcooling in winter will increase the construction heating costs. Here, temperature-adaptive porous polymer radiative cooling coatings (TA-PRCMs) were developed from an all-season thermal management perspective, which can adaptively adjust the sunlight reflectivity according to ambient temperature. The fabricated porous polymer coatings switch from the colorless phase to the colored phase, when the ambient temperature is lower than the transition temperature, with the solar reflectance of black, rose red, orange, violet, blue and yellow coatings changed from 0.85, 0.9, 0.92, 0.9, 0.75 and 0.9 to 0.6, 0.7, 0.73, 0.67, 0.62, and 0.86, respectively. The outdoor temperature tests show that the average and maximum daily surface temperatures of the black sample are up to 2.7 °C and 4.7 °C higher than superior performance hierarchically porous radiative cooling (HPRC) film on a winter day. Energy consumption simulations show that the energy-saving performance of TA-PRCMs coatings outperforms the HPRC film in most cities of China with various climates. Such as in Lhasa, China, the black color coating can save up to 5000 ∼ 6000 kWh for a two-story office building.

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is an innovative and sustainable cooling technology that holds immense potential for addressing the energy crisis. Despite the numerous reports on radiative coolers, the design of a straightforward, efficient, and readily producible system remains a challenge. Herein, we present the development of a hierarchical aligned porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (HAP-PVDF) film through a freeze-thaw-promoted nonsolvent-induced phase separation strategy. This film features oriented microporous arrays in conjunction with random nanopores, enabling efficient radiative cooling performance under direct sunlight conditions. The incorporation of both micro- and nano-pores in the HAP-PVDF film results in a remarkable solar reflectance of 97% and a sufficiently high infrared thermal emissivity of 96%, facilitating sub-environmental cooling at 18.3 °C on sunny days and 13.1 °C on cloudy days. Additionally, the HAP-PVDF film also exhibits exceptional flexibility and hydrophobicity. Theoretical calculations further confirm a radiative cooling power of 94.8 W·m −2 under a solar intensity of 1000 W·m −2 , demonstrating a performance comparable to the majority of reported radiative coolers.

Passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) can dissipate heat to outer space with high solar reflectance ( R ¯ solar ) and thermal emittance ( ε ¯ LWIR ) in the atmospheric transmission window. However, for the non-contact heat dissipation, besides the high R ¯ solar , a high infrared transmittance ( τ ¯ LWIR ) is needed to directly emit thermal radiation through the IR-transparent coating to outer space. In this work, An IR-transparent porous PE (P-PE) coating with R ¯ solar = 0.96 and τ ¯ LWIR = 0.88 was prepared for non-contact heat dissipations. Under the direct sunlight of 860 W m −2 , the IR-transparent coating obtained a 4°C lower heater temperature than the normal PDRC coating under the same condition. In addition, the spectral reflectance of the P-PE coating after immersing in air or water changed little, which showed excellent durability for long-term outdoor applications. These results indicate the P-PE coating can be a potential IR-transparent coating for non-contact heat dissipations under direct sunlight.

Aerogel possesses the advantages of high specific surface area, low density, and high porosity, which have shown great application in thermal regulation due to its efficient light scattering capability. However, traditional polymer-based aerogels have poor mechanical properties and lack ductility in outdoor applications, the cooling efficiency of the material is easily affected by damage during transportation, installation, and environmental factors. In this work, combining the porous nature of aerogels and the high ductility of membranes, a polylactic acid-based porous membrane cooler was developed by combining a regular honeycomb surface porous structure design and physical/chemical modification to enhance flexibility, using a simple non-solvent induced phase separation method. This porous membrane exhibits both super-flexibility (116 % elongation at break) and porous characteristics. It achieves a sub-ambient temperature decrease of 4–6 °C under direct sunlight. The optimized porous membrane demonstrates high solar reflectance (94 % of peak reflectivity, 90 % of average reflectivity) and strong infrared emissivity (96 % of peak emissivity, 91 % of average emissivity), it also maintains a solar peak reflectivity of 91 % under 100 % tensile strain and 1000 bending cycles, the cooler still maintains a cooling effect of 2–5 °C below ambient temperature. This work paves the way for developing mechanical flexible and strong radiative coolers for thermal regulation.

The dynamic interplay between environmental temperature fluctuations and human thermal comfort calls for intelligent textiles capable of adaptive heat regulation. Herein, a complementary, dynamic-responsive, and environment-adaptive metafabric (DREAM) is reported that integrates radiative cooling (RC) with phase-change-driven thermal buffering within a gradient porous architecture. This synergistic design enables closed-loop management of cooling energy through a harvest–storage–release mechanism, achieving effective thermal modulation under diurnal-nocturnal cycles. The high solar reflectivity (≈95.6%) and mid-infrared emissivity (≈95.4%) of DREAM ensure efficient radiative cooling, while embedded high-latent-heat microencapsulated phase-change materials (PCMs) actively respond to thermal loads. Moreover, the engineered gradient porosity imparts directional heat conduction and thermal asymmetry, suppressing external heat gain. Compared to conventional RC textiles, DREAM demonstrates a significantly enhanced cooling capacity (124.4 W m −2 ) and a daytime temperature drop of up to 19.6 °C, while reducing nighttime temperature fluctuations by 84%. Beyond its thermal performance, DREAM exhibits robust mechanical strength, excellent air and moisture permeability, and wash durability, making it promising for wearable and building-integrated thermal regulation. This work offers a material–structure–function co-design strategy for next-generation climate-adaptive textiles.

Energy conservation in buildings has become a crucial approach to alleviating the energy crisis and reducing carbon emissions. Thermal insulation coatings are one of the effective methods for energy conservation in buildings. In this study, hollow polystyrene microspheres (HPMs) with varying particle sizes and enhanced thermal insulation performance were synthesized via seeded emulsion polymerization combined with alkali swelling. By adjusting the initiator content, core particle sizes were controlled between 142 and 354 nm, yielding HPMs with particle sizes ranging from 364 to 550 nm and cavity diameters from 127 to 370 nm. At a 40 wt% HPMs-0.775 loading, the composite coating exhibited enhanced solar reflectance (98.1% ± 0.7%) due to the synergistic effects of light reflection and thermal insulation from the hollow interiors. The coating's average transmittance was 6.5% ± 1.3%, and its average reflectance reached 43.1% ± 1.4%. The thermal conductivity of the coating (0.1098 ± 0.0056 W/m K) was found to be significantly lower than that of all other tested compositions.

To alleviate the urban heat island effect, reduce building energy consumption and improve the living environment for residents, the development of highly reflective pigments and coatings is of great significance for sustainable development. In this study, Mg 2.4- x Cr x TiO 4.4+δ (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) and Mg 2.4- x Co x TiO 4.4 (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4) pigments with intense green/sky blue colors were successfully synthesized through solid state method. The crystal structure, color development mechanism and optical properties of as-synthesized samples are analyzed. The as-prepared pigments demonstrate excellent NIR reflectance with the highest solar reflectance up to 83%. Furthermore, the color coatings with high NIR solar reflectance were successfully prepared by mixing the pigments with acrylic resin. A solar reflectance of 69.81% is achieved among the green/blue coatings. The thermal shielding effect of the coatings in practical applications was tested through chamber simulation experiments. The test temperature of the prepared coating was 8.8 ℃ lower than that of the blank stainless steel plate after radiating with a 250 W infrared lamp for 30 minutes, which proved its good heat insulation performance. Through pickling and alkali washing experiments, the color coordinates of the coatings are very stable, indicating the excellent acid-base resistance in the practical applications.
