Dual-Band Electrochromic Smart Window for Dynamic Switching Between Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating

Xinyu Zhao,Qixiang Chen,Fan Fan,Qiliang Wang,Yuehong Su,Minsu Liu,Fahua Zhu,Dongliang Zhao

Electrochromic smart windows can actively modulate their reversible transition between transparent and opaque states, adapting to varying climatic conditions and thereby offering a sustainable solution for energy-efficient buildings. However, the operational range of current electrochromic smart windows is mostly limited to the solar spectrum. Expanding this range into the mid-infrared spectrum could significantly enhance their energy-saving capabilities. In this study, a dynamic electrochromic (EC) glass that integrates silver electrodeposition/dissolution with mechanical flipping of the glass panel is designed. This design enables bidirectional dynamic modulation of both the solar spectrum (0.3–2.5 µm) and mid-infrared spectrum (2.5–20 µm), with solar reflectance varying between 87.9% and 19.9%, and mid-infrared emissivity varying between 90.6% and 10.8%. Consequently, the EC glass can dynamically switch between radiative cooling and solar heating modes. The simulation results show that the architectural application of this EC glass, with climate-specific operating modes, can achieve a maximum of over 50% annual heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) energy savings, contributing to carbon neutrality and sustainable development.

Advanced Janus Coatings for Thermal Management and Synergistic Flame Retardancy in Textiles

Liangyuan Qi,Wei Cai,Jiajun Li,Tianyang Cui,Liang Chen,Jing Gao,Bin Fei,Yuan Hu,Lei Song,Zhou Gui,Weiyi Xing

In the context of low-carbon and energy conservation initiatives, smart thermal management textiles for the human body, which operate without energy consumption and pollution, are gaining increased attention. However, conformal to human skin, ensuring the fire safety of these textiles remains a critical challenge for their practical application. Meanwhile, complicated and changed environments demand a high self-adaptation for designed textiles. This study introduces a dual-mode textile designed for freely switching radiative cooling (RC) and solar heating (SH). The textile is created by applying a high-white flame retardant and black phosphorus to both sides using a convenient scrape coating method. The combination of the cooling layer (90.0% solar reflectance and 95.9% infrared emissivity) and the heating layer (80% solar absorptivity) provides a comfortable thermal environment for the human body. Furthermore, the Janus coating, consisting of advanced flame retardants, synergistically enhances the textile's fire safety, confirmed by a limiting oxygen index of 28.0%, a reduction of 40.1% in peak value of heat release, and self-extinguishing properties. This research presents a simple and available approach to creating dual-mode smart textiles for maintaining a comfortable micro-environment towards changed seasons and weather, significantly contributing to the development of fire-safe personal thermal management technology.

Hierarchical-Morphology Metal/Polymer Heterostructure for Scalable Multimodal Thermal Management

Zhangbin Yang,Yu Jia,Jun Zhang

The cooling and heating energy consumption of buildings poses a serious threat to the energy supply and increases greenhouse gas emissions, thus adversely impacting global warming and the long-term climate change trends. Here, inspired by the structure of the louver, this work demonstrates a multimodal device that integrates radiative cooling, natural lighting, and solar heating to deal with the grand challenge of building energy consumption. The blades integrate a selective radiative cooling material with a solar heating material. The selective radiative cooling material (solar reflectance ∼97%, selective emittance ∼0.82 in the 8–13 μm waveband) combines a solar reflective melt-blown polypropylene film and a solar transparent mid-infrared emitter polyethylene/silicon dioxide film. In addition, the heating material (solar absorptance ∼91%, thermal emittance ∼0.04) is zinc (Zn) film deposited with copper (Cu) nanoparticles, based on the Cu–Zn galvanic-displacement reaction. Hence, by rotating the blades, the conversion of radiative cooling, solar heating, and natural lighting functions can be realized. In the daytime, the multimodal device displays a subambient temperature of 4 °C, a superambient temperature of 2 °C, and a superambient temperature of 5 °C for the cooling mode, transmitting mode, and solar heating mode, respectively. On the basis of the energy-savings simulation, integrating these modes and dynamic converting these modes in the corresponding climate could save ∼746 GJ in the contiguous United States for one year (38% of the baseline energy consumption), which is equivalent to ∼147 tons of carbon dioxide emission reduction. Because of its excellent multimodal thermal management performance, this multimodal device will push forward the transformative change of building thermal management toward decarbonization and sustainability and being more green.

Multifunctional Janus-Coated Metafabric for Personal Thermal Comfort and Energy Efficient Buildings

Yiqi Dong,Lindai Sun,Yujie Guo,Jianping Xu,Zheyu Jin,Zhongwei Wang,Wenkui Zhang,Yang Xia,Hui Huang,Xinhui Xia,Jun Zhang

Space cooling and heating consume huge energy resources globally, while existing cooling/heating equipment can only address indoor temperature control. In this work, we report a multifunctional layered Janus-coated fabric (JCF) with radiative cooling/solar heating/Joule heating, which can utilize space and the sun as a source of cooling and heating. By adjusting the reflectivity, emissivity, and absorptivity of the coating, the fabric performs a thermal management function in a complex and changeable environment without consuming energy. In cooling mode, the cooling layer achieves a high solar reflectivity of 96% and an infrared emissivity of 96%, resulting in a 3.1 °C reduction in ambient temperature without any convective shielding. In addition, it reduces temperatures by 1.6 °C on human arms and by 5.1 °C inside houses, respectively. In the heating mode, the heating layer demonstrates excellent light-to-heat conversion efficiency under direct sunlight, achieving a 13.3 °C radiation warming ability, 16 °C heating effect on the surface of the arm, and a 12.8 °C temperature increase in the house. Furthermore, when switched to active heating for temperature regulation, JCF exhibits fast electrical response, high-efficiency electrical heat conversion capability, and stable electrical heat circulation capability. Building energy simulations indicate that widespread deployment of JCF across China could lead to a reduction in cooling and heating energy consumption by more than 25 MJ/m2 in 80% of cities. This multifunctional Janus-coated fabric not only provides a viable engineering path for the practical application of radiative heat management technology but also demonstrates its potential applications in human thermal comfort, smart wearable and building energy efficiency.

Phase-Change Material-Integrated Dual-Mode Thermal Management Janus Films with Enhanced Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating

Zilin Yu,Fang Wang,Wenqing He,Yuanfeng Wang,Bing Dai,Xueji Zhang

Passive radiative cooling (PRC) and solar heating (SH) are highly desired in a variety of areas such as personal thermal regulation and thermal control of a building’s macroenvironment. However, most current thermal management materials are usually a single function with static temperature regulation, resulting in a poor feature with environment adaption. Here, a phase-change material-integrated dual-mode Janus film with enhanced radiative cooling and SH for thermal management is demonstrated. The Janus film is developed by integrating a paraffin-type phase-change material (PCM) and carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), enabling both PRC and SH. The cooling mode of Janus film is achieved by infrared ray thermal radiation of PDMS and absorbing heat of PCM. The heating mode of Janus film is achieved by SH of the CNTs@PDMS layer, and solar energy is converted into heat energy stored and released by PCM@PDMS. The introduction of PCM enhances the practical effects of radiation cooling and SH. The energy storage of PCM can be released at night, avoiding unwanted overcooling. In addition, the PCM@PDMS features self-cleaning and self-repair abilities. This work provides a PCM-enhanced dual-mode thermal management strategy toward applications in a practical scenario with dynamic ambient temperature variations.

Solar heating assisted rapid cleanup of viscous crude oil spills using reduced graphene oxide-coated sponges

Wang XinZhi,Liu Dan,Cheng Gong,Huang YuDong,He YuRong

The rapid cleanup of heavy crude oil spills is challenging due to the poor mobility of highly viscous oil. Traditional absorption strategies involve heating oils to a relatively high temperature to reduce their viscosity, but this method is expensive. Herein, a solar-heated reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-wrapped melamine sponge (MS) was proposed to rapidly absorb oil. The prepared rGO-MS exhibited good hydrophobicity and oleophilicity and could be used for the rapid cleanup of oil spills from water. In addition, the excellent photothermal conversion effect of rGO enabled the rGO-MS composite to achieve a solar energy absorption efficiency of 91%. Due to the localized solar energy collection and wetting properties of rGO-MS, viscous oil near the contact region was effectively heated, enabling rapid heavy oil recovery under solar light illumination. This proposed solar heating-assisted viscous oil sorbent has great promise for use in heavy oil spill cleanups in the future.

Fast Solar-to-Thermal Conversion/Storage Nanofibers for Thermoregulation, Stain-Resistant, and Breathable Fabrics

Tingting Xu,Shudong Zhang,Shuai Han,Yi Qin,Cui Liu,Min Xi,Xinling Yu,Nian Li,Zhenyang Wang

Flexible/foldable, self-supporting, porous, and wearable bifunctional fabrics for sunlight heating and phase change temperature control are designed and constructed for wearable thermal management. In this study, coaxial fibers with polyvinylidene fluoride polymer solution uniformly doped with Cu7S4 as sheath and n-eicosane as core components are fabricated by electrospinning technology. Remarkably, based on the fast solar-to-thermal conversion of the photothermal conversion material, the as-obtained fabric provides sunlight heating for an extra warmth of 25 °C within 1.5 min. Besides, active temperature control via fabric internal phase transformation reduces the daily temperature fluctuations, which is superior to that of the normal and traditional cotton fiber. Impressively, the present bifunctional fabric possesses both better thermal comfortability, including breathability, sweat wicking, and stain resistance, and high durability against wash and soak over 120 h, suggesting its great potential in wearable technologies for thermal regulation.

Mechanically Switchable Multifunctional Device for Regulating Passive Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating

Shuang Tao,Jingtian Han,Ying Xu,Zhenggang Fang,Yaru Ni,Liang Fang,Chunhua Lu,Zhongzi Xu

Energy consumption during cooling and heating poses a great threat to the development of society. Thermal regulation, as switchable cooling and heating in a single platform, is therefore urgently demanded. Herein, a switchable multifunctional device integrating heating, cooling, and latent energy storage was proposed for temperature regulation and window energy saving for buildings. A radiative cooling (RC) emitter, a phase-change (PC) membrane, and a solar-heating (SH) film were connected layer by layer to form a sandwich structure. The RC emitter exhibited selective infrared emission (emissivity in the atmospheric window: 0.81, emissivity outside the atmospheric window: 0.39) and a high solar reflectance (0.92). Meanwhile, the SH film had a high solar absorptivity (0.90). More importantly, both the RC emitter and the SH film displayed excellent wear resistance and UV resistance. The PC layer can control the temperature at a steady state under dynamic weather conditions, which could be verified by indoor and outdoor measurements. The thermal regulation performance of the multifunctional device was also verified by outdoor measurements. The temperature difference between the RC and SH models of the multifunctional device could reach up to 25 °C. The as-constructed switchable multifunctional device is a promising candidate for alleviating the cooling and heating energy consumption and realizing energy saving for windows.

Spray-Applied MXene Coatings on Metal–Organic Framework Monoliths for Adaptive All-Day Atmospheric Water Harvesting at Mitigated Energy Cost

Qiannan Wu,Zhiqiang Feng,Xingfu Zhou,Haiqing Li

All-day atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) presents an appealing approach for achieving high-yield water production in arid regions. However, current all-day MOF-based AWH strategies often involve intricate material preparation procedures and high energy input for water desorption, raising concerns about the water production cost. Leveraging the naturally abundant solar energy available in arid areas, herein, sprayable Ti3C2 MXene/silane-decorated hyperbranched polymer solutions (Ti3C2/sHBP) are presented. These solutions enable easy formation of robust, spray-applied coatings on monolithic MOFs upon exposure to sunlight, resulting in monolithic Ti3C2/sHBP-coated MOFs (TCM). The presence of Ti3C2/sHBP coatings equips TCMs with dual solar and electrical heating capabilities, enabling adaptive all-day AWH based on sunlight availability: solar heating-driven AWH when sufficient sunlight is present, combined solar/electrical heating-driven AWH when sunlight is insufficient, and electrical heating-driven AWH during periods without sunlight. Compared to traditional electrical heating-driven AWH, this adaptive all-day AWH delivers a similar water production performance with a 28.8% reduction in energy consumption for water desorption. Imparting MOF monoliths with dual heating functionality through a straightforward spray-applied coating demonstrates a novel, facile, and cost-effective strategy for enabling adaptive all-day AWH with excellent water productivity at a significantly mitigated energy cost.

A Solar-Heated Phase Change Composite Fiber with a Core–Shell Structure for the Recovery of Highly Viscous Crude Oil

Chenxin Lin,Yifan Wang,Cenyu Liu,Kaiyue Meng,Endong Chang,Xiaowen Wu,Jiancheng Wang

Due to the high viscosity and low fluidity of viscous crude oil, how to effectively recover spilled crude oil is still a major global challenge. Although solar thermal absorbers have made significant progress in accelerating oil recovery, its practical application is largely restricted by the variability of solar radiation intensity, which is influenced by external environmental factors. To address this issue, this study created a new composite fiber that not only possesses solar energy conversion and storage capabilities but also facilitates crude oil removal. PF@PAN@PEG was obtained by coaxial electrospinning processing, with PEG within PAN fibers, and a coating layer was applied to the fiber surface to impart oleophilicity and hydrophobicity. PF@PAN@PEG exhibited a high latent heat value (77.12 J/g), high porosity, and excellent photothermal conversion and oil storage capabilities, significantly reducing the viscosity of crude oil. PF@PAN@PEG can adsorb approximately 11.65 g/g of crude oil under sunlight irradiation. Notably, due to the encapsulation of PEG, PF@PAN@PEG can continuously maintain the crude oil at a phase change temperature by releasing latent heat under specific conditions, effectively reducing its viscosity with no PEG leakage at all. When solar light intensity varied, the crude oil collection efficiency increased by 21.99% compared to when no phase change material was added. This research offers a potential approach for the effective use of clean energy and the collection of viscous crude oil spill pollution.

Outdoor adaptive temperature control based on a thermochromic hydrogel by regulating solar heating

Na Guo,Shanquan Liu,Chouxu Chen,Caixia Song,Songhan Mo,Hongjie Yan,Meijie Chen

In outdoor environments, solar heating in summer leads to the overheating of equipment or buildings while in winter these objects would overcool and would necessitate heating to maintain their suitable operating temperature. Temperature regulation based on cooling and heating accounts for global energy consumption and global greenhouse gas emissions. In this work, a strategy based on a high emittance polymer, thermochromic hydrogel, and black solar absorber was proposed to passively control temperature by regulating solar heating under sunlight. The system can seamlessly transition between “cooling” and “heating” modes based on the critical temperature T c of the thermochromic hydrogel. T c can be adjusted within a range of 25 °C to 45 °C to accommodate diverse temperature control requirements. When the temperature of the coating material stack increased from 20 °C to 60 °C, the heating/cooling power ranged from 675.0 W·m −2 to − 86.2 W·m −2 , switching from the “heating” to “cooling” modes, respectively. The designed coating demonstrated a potential energy-saving capability, with approximately 20.3 % reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional coatings. Outdoor experiments revealed that the temperature of the coating remained more stable and was approximately 10 °C or 7 °C lower than that of reference coatings. These results indicated combining solar heating and radiative cooling with thermochromic hydrogels can provide a potential approach to achieving outdoor adaptive temperature control for energy saving.

Thermal Homeostasis Enabled by Dynamically Regulating the Passive Radiative Cooling and Solar Heating Based on a Thermochromic Hydrogel

Zhen Fang,Liyun Ding,Lintao Li,Kun Shuai,Boyu Cao,Yetao Zhong,Zhenghua Meng,Zhilin Xia

Thermal homeostasis can maintain body temperature of warm-blooded organisms in a narrow range to avoid hypothermia, ensuring the normal operation of life activities. Thermal homeostasis can make the internal temperature of target relatively insensitive to temperature changes of surrounding environment, which is of great significance to the efficient operation of equipment and the service life of material. The current systems that maintain thermal homeostasis need to consume electricity, which is very detrimental to energy consumption and global warming. Here, we propose a novel thermal homeostasis program by means of tunable sunlight-scattering behaviors of thermochromic hydrogel, without external energy input such as electrical energy and mechanical energy. A sandwich structure thermal homeostasiser (SSTH) generated by the thermal homeostasis program consists of three parts: the radiative cooling part at the top, the thermochromic part in the middle and the solar heating part at the bottom. The feasibility of thermal homeostasis based on SSTH has been verified theoretically and experimentally. With the ambient air temperature difference of more than 6 °C, SSTH can maintain its own temperature difference within 1.2 °C. The SSTH is a simple-feasible paradigm for achieving thermal homeostasis. This new thermal homeostasis method we proposed can fill the vacancy of the current thermal homeostasis control means and show great potential as a complementary mean of the existing building environment control system to go a step further toward zero-energy building.
