During Bayer alumina production with high-sulfur bauxite, the sulfide ions in the sodium aluminate solution caused serious corrosion to Q235 steel, which is the material of the tank equipment. This study investigates the effect of corrosion time on Q235 steel synergistic corrosion in sodium aluminate solution using the weight-loss method and electrochemical measurements. The results indicate that the corrosion rate decreases sharply, the rate equation satisfies the mathematical model of power function at the initial stage of corrosion, and the transformation of unstable iron sulfide to stable iron oxide at the later stage results in the decrease in sulfur content in the corrosion products and surface pseudo-passivation. There are two main types of corrosion products, as follows: one is the octahedral crystal particle, which is composed of Fe2O3, Fe3O4, Al2O3and NaFeO2, and the other is the interlayer corrosion between the surface layer and the matrix, which is composed of FeS, FeS2and MnS2. At day 3, the dynamics of the Q235 steel electrode is controlled by charge transfer and ion diffusion. However, at other times the dynamics are mainly controlled by charge transfer.Keywords:Q235 steel;sulfide;corrosion time;weight loss;electrochemistry;EIS;potentiodynamic polarization curve

The corrosion inhibition performance of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBTH) for carbon steel in a CO 2 -H 2 O system was investigated by weight loss, surface analysis, electrochemical measurements, and quantum chemical calculations. Results showed that MBTH could effectively protect carbon steel from CO 2 corrosion and inhibition efficiency of MBTH in supercritical CO 2 was higher than that in non-supercritical CO 2 situation. The differential capacitance curves revealed that excess positive charges would be on the surface of carbon steel in the supercritical-CO 2 system while negative charges accumulated on carbon steel surface in non-supercritical CO 2 condition. The adsorption model was proposed to explain the inhibition mechanism of MBTH.

In the realm of postcombustion carbon capture, diethylenetriamine (DETA), recognized for its substantial CO2 absorption capacity, presents a formidable challenge due to its corrosive impact on equipment. This study delves into the corrosion behavior of 20# carbon steel immersed in DETA solutions under varying conditions, employing weight loss and electrochemical methods. The investigation incorporates scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses for characterization. Corrosion experiments were also conducted in monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions for a comparative analysis. Results from the corrosion tests in DETA solutions mirror the temperature-dependent corrosion rate (CR) observed in MEA. However, a distinctive trend emerges as the CO2 loading of DETA increases from 0.2 mol CO2/mol amine to 1.2 mol CO2/mol amine, leading to a continuous decrease in the CR of carbon steel─contrary to MEA solutions. This anomaly is attributed to DETA’s robust complexing ability with metal ions and its elevated solubility of Fe2+ in solution. Additionally, an examination of the corrosion mechanism in the presence of oxygen was conducted through characterizing the specimen surface and solution precipitates postexperiment. The absence of a protective FeCO3 layer can be attributed to insufficient concentrations of free Fe2+ and CO32– in the solution, failing to achieve the minimum saturation required for protective film formation. The insights gained from studying the corrosion behavior of carbon steel in DETA solutions lay the groundwork for subsequent developments in corrosion inhibitors.

The inhibition effect of 4,6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine (DAMP) as a copper corrosion inhibitor in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was investigated by weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization. The inhibition efficiency increased with increasing DAMP concentration in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 mM DAMP and decreased with increasing temperature. The obtained results showed that DAMP inhibited both the anodic and cathodic currents and the maximum inhibition efficiency reached 93.2% at 2.0 mM DAMP. The inhibition performance of DAMP was confirmed by SEM and EDS. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the DAMP molecule was adsorbed on the copper surface in a paralleled way through S and N atoms and the pyrimidine ring. Adsorption of DAMP was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm.

s Background Exploring effective and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors is critical for Metal protection against an aggressive environment. This work investigated the performance of a newly synthesized menthone (5-methyl-2-(1-methyl-ethyl) cyclohexanone) and chitosan Schiff base for Q235 carbon steel in 1.0 M HCl. Methods The newly synthesized structure of MCS is confirmed using the FT-IR and 1H NMR spectrum. The inhibitor performance was evaluated using the weight loss. technique across a 298 – 328 K temperature range, electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Potentiodynamic Polarization (PDP). SEM, AFM images, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is employed to analyze the Q235 carbon steel Surface. Additionally, the adsorption behavior of MCS was studied using the Langmuir model isotherm and computational studies, including DFT, Fukui functions, and molecular dynamics simulations. Significant findings The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the MCS inhibitor. Achieving the highest inhibition efficiency of 95.9 % at an optimized concentration of 600 mg. L -1 . The electrochemical investigations suggest a mixed mechanism for the inhibitor. Surface analysis indicates that the adsorption of MCS molecules on the metal surface reduces corrosion. The adsorption mechanism of the inhibitor on the surface of the Fe metal occurs through physio-chemisorption, as inferred from the Gibbs free energy (ΔG ads ) value of -34 kJ. mol -1. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the stable adsorption of the inhibitor on the Fe (110) surface, with an adsorption energy of –941.564 kcal/mol for the neutral form.
