3D printed bone nails loaded with ceftriaxone sodium for localized drug delivery

Zhang Liwen,Zhao Jinhong,Zhang Jie,Lou Bang,Li Huijie,Guo Fangyuan,Yang Gensheng,Hong Weiyong

The convergence of advanced materials science and additive manufacturing technologies has revolutionized medical applications ranging from orthodontic devices to patient-specific bone fixation systems. Despite these advancements, the clinical translation of 3D-printed orthopedic implants remains constrained by suboptimal biocompatibility of conventional manufacturing materials. This study systematically evaluates dental resin-based composites as alternative biomaterials for bone fixation devices, hypothesizing that their rapid photopolymerization kinetics, mechanical robustness, and inherent biocompatibility can address current limitations. Through stereolithography technology, ceftriaxone sodium-loaded bone fixation devices were developed with customized geometries tailored to diverse anatomical requirements. Material optimization revealed that a 7:3 ratio of ethoxylated bisphenol A dimethacrylate (BPA2EODMA) to triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) achieved optimal mechanical performance. Cytocompatibility assessment using L929 fibroblasts demonstrated > 70% cell viability, confirming minimal cytotoxicity. The drug-eluting implants exhibited potent antimicrobial efficacy in 8-h elution assays, showing inhibition rates of 49.14 ± 4.89% ( Staphylococcus aureus ), 48.38 ± 5.88% ( Escherichia coli ), and 26.79 ± 2.69% ( Candida albicans ). These results validate the dual functionality of antibiotic-loaded dental resin constructs, positioning them as promising candidates for patient-specific orthopedic solutions that simultaneously address mechanical stability, osseointegration, and infection prevention.

An Integrated Electrochemiluminescence Microfluidic Device For Detecting Ultra-low Concentration of Ceftriaxone

Xiansu Liu,Hanwen Ren,Biao Wang,DongDong Zhao,Haolin Xiao,Qunfeng Tang,Hongli Huang,Feijun Zhao,Zhencheng Chen

Ceftriaxone sodium, a widely used third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, poses significant health risks when residues accumulate in clinical or environmental settings. However, conventional detection techniques, including high-performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis, are limited by complex procedures, poor sensitivity, and a lack of real-time capability. To address these challenges, we report a sensitivity-enhanced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) microfluidic device for the rapid and label-free detection of ultra-low concentrations of ceftriaxone. Au 25 (Capt) 18 gold nanoclusters were served as a novel ECL luminophore to boost detection sensitivity, while a 3D-printed circulating microfluidic channel was designed to enrich ceftriaxone via inertial centrifugation. The device achieved a wide detection range of 4–400 μg/mL, a low detection limit of 0.522 μg/mL, and an average recovery of 99.1% in real sample tests. This integrated platform offers a promising strategy for simple, sensitive, and on-site monitoring of ceftriaxone contamination.

Freeze-drying of ceftriaxone sodium solution frozen with prefabricated porosity

Wei Wang,Dapeng Hu,Yanqiu Pan,Hengle Li,Guohua Chen

Initially unsaturated material frozen with prefabricated porosity was prepared to experimentally investigate its effect on freeze-drying of liquid material. Ceftriaxone sodium, a kind of commonly used antibiotic, was selected as the primary solute in an aqueous solution. The liquid nitrogen ice cream-making method was employed to prepare frozen materials with different initial porosities. Results showed that freeze-drying was significantly enhanced with the initially unsaturated frozen material and substantial drying time was saved compared with conventional freeze-drying. Drying time for the unsaturated sample (0.3 of saturation or 0.67 of initial porosity) was more than 20 % shorter than that required for the saturated one (1.0 of saturation without initial porosity). SEM images displayed that the dried products of the unsaturated frozen material had a pierced solid skeleton and uniform pore space with a fine and tenuous structure compared with those of the saturated one. The freezing rate exhibited little influence on the freeze-drying process. Annealing can be moderately beneficial to shortening the drying time and further improving the energy utilization. An appropriate increase in operating temperature was able to enhance the freeze-drying rate while changes in chamber pressure had a negligible effect on the process.

Preparation and performance of g-C3N4/g-C3N5 homojunction photocatalyst activated peroxymonosulfate for ceftriaxone sodium degradation

Jingle Zhang,Huihu Wang,Yangliu Ou,Hao Tu,Ziguan Zhang,Chenhuinan Wei,Xing Xiang,Ming Bao

As the overuse of antibiotics increasingly contaminates the environment, one of modern chemistry's objectives is to identify high-performance photocatalytic materials to degrade antibiotics. This study initially utilized NH 4 Cl as a gas template to synthesize porous lamellar g-C 3 N 4 (CNS) through a high-temperature calcination process. Building upon this, a homojunction catalyst, CNS/g-C 3 N 5 (S-CN), was developed via a secondary sintering technique using different amount of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole addition to evaluate its efficacy in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading the antibiotic ceftriaxone sodium. Under neutral conditions, the photocatalytic system composed of S-CN catalysts prepared by 50 mg of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole addition and PMS (S 3 -CN/PMS) exhibited degradation rates that were 3.37 and 8.11 times higher than those of the CNS/PMS and g-C 3 N 5 /PMS, respectively. At a pH of 8, the S 3 -CN/PMS system attained a 99.7 % degradation efficiency within 75 min. Based on results from UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), photoluminescence spectroscopy and radical scavenging experiments, this high efficiency is attributed to a homojunction Z-type charge transfer mechanism that enhances the separation of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, the study found that the optimal PMS addition was 20 mg and the optimal pH was 8. Chloride ions promoted the reaction, while other ions decreased the reaction rate. In conclusion, this paper provides valuable insights for the morphological modification of carbon nitride homojunction materials and the efficient activation of PMS for pollutant degradation.

Synthesis of MoBTx@SF@PA composite for efficient and rapid adsorption of indomethacin and ceftriaxone: Unveiling exceptional adsorption performance and potential mechanisms

Irfan Ijaz,Aysha Bukhari,Ammara Nazir,Ezaz Gilani,Hina Zain,Attia Shaheen,Mohammed Rafi Shaik,Mujeeb Khan

Designing effective adsorbents for adsorption of the threatening level of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) pollution is an immediate challenge for wastewater treatment. In the current work, molybdenum borides (MoBT x ) were first composited with silk fibroin (SF) through ultrasonic self-assembly. Then, the MoBT x @SF composite’s surface was modified with phytic acid (PA) to create MoBT x @SF@PA composite. The as-synthesized MoBT x @SF@PA adsorbent was developed to effectively remove indomethacin (IDM) and ceftriaxone (CEF). Due to the abundance of functional groups, highly exposed available active sites, and higher BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area (786.8 m 2 /g), MoBT x @SF@PA demonstrated an outstanding adsorption capability for IDM (549.89 mg/g) and CEF (959.18 mg/g), exceeding the earlier reported adsorbents. A kinetic study revealed that the interaction between the MoBT x @SF@PA adsorbent and PPCPs obeyed a pseudo-second-order model (PSO), implying that chemisorption controls the adsorption process. The Langmuir isotherm model and thermodynamic study indicated that IDM and CEF adsorption followed monolayer adsorption and were endothermic and spontaneous. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to explore the adsorption mechanism. Multiple hydrogen bindings, electrostatic interactions, high surface area, and porosity of the composite were primarily responsible for remarkable adsorption capacity. These results highlight a versatile approach for MoBT x -based adsorbent preparation with exceptional adsorption qualities appropriate for real-world PPCPc-polluted wastewater treatment.

Phosphate-adsorbed metal organic framework as a recycled material for catalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium via peroxymonosulfate activation

Zaimei Li,Hongmei Zhang,Qiangyi Deng,Che Han,Conglu Zhang

In this study, the zirconium-based metal organic framework (Zr-MOF) was applied as the adsorbent for phosphorus (P) pollution in water. Then the phosphate-adsorbed metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were used as a recycled raw material and calcined to obtain P-doped MOFs-derived carbon material (ZrP@Zr-BTC). Next, the ZrP@Zr-BTC was used for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the ceftriaxone sodium degradation. The doping of P species in the MOFs-derived carbon material led to a 31 % increase in the degradation rate compared to the material without P doping (ZrO 2 @Zr-BTC). The characterization results confirmed that ZrP@Zr-BTC contained zirconium phosphate, ZrP and ZrO 2 in addition to inorganic carbon. P doping could affect the morphology of zirconium species and the bonding state of oxygen element in the catalyst. The degradation of ceftriaxone sodium by the ZrP@Zr-BTC/PMS system could reach 96 ± 0.82 %. The ZrP@Zr-BTC material also had strong resistance to water quality interference and reusability. The electron spin resonance spectrometer (ESR) analysis indicated singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) played an important role and other free radicals (SO 4 − •, •OH, O 2 − •) were auxiliary. The Fukui function calculated by density functional theory explained the sites susceptible to attack by reactive species, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) results allowed for the inference of the degradation pathway of ceftriaxone sodium. This study not only provides a simple and effective method for the disposal and recycling of waste adsorbents but also offers valuable insights into the role of MOF-derived carbon in activating PMS for pollutant degradation.

Anaerobic co-metabolic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium: Performance and mechanism

Haoran Chen,Zongping Wang,Yuxin Huang,Junchi Wei,Gang Guo,Lei Miao

Ceftriaxone sodium (CTX) is a typical β-lactam antibiotic in pharmaceutical wastewater. Although traditional biological treatments are low-cost and eco-friendly, antibiotics usually inhibit microorganisms , resulting in limited treatment performance. The biological co-metabolism process provides carbon sources and energy for microorganisms through co-substrate addition, thereby producing enzymes or cofactors to enhance the degradation of refractory pollutants. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the degradation performance of CTX through anaerobic biological co-metabolism. A simple co-metabolic substrate (i.e., glucose, 80 mg L −1 ) was added into an anaerobic-activated sludge system, and its mechanism was explored in terms of the variations in extracellular polymeric substances , microbial structure, and resistance genes. Additionally, the possible degradation pathways of CTX were described. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of CTX (200 mg L −1 ) was only about 35% within 8 h in the control group, while it increased to 67.6% in the experimental group with glucose. Chloroflexi , Actinobacteria , Bacteroidetes ADurb.Bin123, and Bacteroidales were the predominant bacterial species in the system. Additionally, the types of enzymes and the relative abundance of β-lactam resistance genes in the co-metabolic system significantly increased by 7 and 0.77%, respectively. Furthermore, nine primary anaerobic CTX biodegradation products were detected, indicating the existence of three possible degradation pathways. Overall, the study results provide a novel approach to treating CTX-containing wastewater.

Synthesis of novel Fe0-Fe3O4/CeO2/C composite cathode for efficient heterogeneous electro-Fenton degradation of ceftriaxone sodium

Jie Chen,Jiafeng Wan,Chi Li,Yuhan Wei,Haolin Shi

Fe 0 -Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and cerium dioxide hollow spheres as efficient heterogeneous electro-Fenton reagents were rationally designed to be embedded in porous carbon derived from skimmed cotton for the electrocatalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium. Skimmed cotton porous carbon material has a hollow tubular structure, and cerium dioxide is dispersed on the surface of the carbon material in a hollow sphere structure of uniform size. Fe 0 -Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were wrapped in irregular particle shapes on the surface of cerium dioxide hollow spheres, and the remaining part was laid flat on the surface of porous carbon material. The as-synthesized Fe 0 -Fe 3 O 4 /CeO 2 /C showed excellent degradation efficiency of 95.59 % for ceftriaxone sodium within 120 mins and obtained a COD removal rate of 95.21 % at 240 mins. The zero-valent iron as a reducing agent effectively accelerated the Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycle, allowing the composites to exhibit higher catalytic activity and further reducing the possibility of secondary contamination. Moreover, the existence of cerium dioxide further promoted the redox cycle of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and accelerated the electron transfer in the interface of the catalyst. The synergistic effect of iron and cerium greatly facilitated the production of hydroxyl radicals and increased the yield of hydroxyl radicals in the reaction system.

Flower-like Ni/Mn/MC microspheres derived from metal-organic frameworks for electrocatalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium

Xinyue Feng,Haolin Shi,Wei Liu,Fangwei Ma,Pan Liu,Jiafeng Wan

This study demonstrated the design and fabrication of flower-like Ni/Mn-MOFs materials, and three-dimensional ultrathin flower-like Ni/Mn/MC microspheres were fabricated by embedding metal or metal oxide nanoparticles into a porous carbon skeleton via high-temperature pyrolysis at 600 °C and used for the electrocatalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium. This unique ultrathin porous flower-like structure can expose more active sites, provide rapid ion/electron transfer, and improve electrocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, the excellent electrical conductivity of the carbon skeleton, as well as the rational composition and synergistic effect of the two components, can promote the generation of active radicals (•OH and •O 2 − ) in the reaction system, which accelerates the electrochemical degradation process and improves the electrocatalytic degradation performance. The results showed that the Ni/Mn/MC-5:1 composite prepared when the molar ratio of Ni: Mn was 5:1 exhibited the best electrocatalytic degradation performance for the degradation of sodium ceftriaxone. The composites showed 98.2% degradation of ceftriaxone sodium in 120 min and maintained sound degradation after 20 cycles. Therefore, we concluded that this novel multicomponent composite has good electrocatalytic activity and stability for the degradation of antibiotic wastewater.

Insights into the formation of environmentally persistent free radicals during photocatalytic degradation processes of ceftriaxone sodium by ZnO/ZnIn2S4

Jianhua Yang,Lu Fang,Zhengkui Li,Guanhua Meng,Yong Jia,Yongbin Jiang,Jianjun Lian,Xinhong Gan

At present, the researches on photocatalysis were mainly focused on the design, improvement and development of catalysts, and less attention was paid to the existing characteristics of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) during the process of photocatalytic oxidation. In this study, A flower-like Z-type heterojunction ZnO/ZnIn 2 S 4 (ZnO/ZIS) and typical antibiotic ceftriaxone sodium (CS) were taken as study objects, concentrating on the generation characteristics of EPFRs during the degradation of CS by ZnO/ZIS, and clarifying the degradation mechanism of CS in which EPFRs participated. The results showed that the degradation efficiency of 10 mg/L CS by 0.40 g/L ZnO/ZIS reached 85.3% in 150 min under the irradiation of 500 W xenon lamp . It was clear that ·O 2 − and h + play major roles in CS degradation by ZnO/ZIS under visible light, and ·OH plays an auxiliary role. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of EPFRs during photocatalytic degradation processes of CS by ZnO/ZIS were first investigated thoroughly via experimental analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The concentration level of EPFRs centered on oxygen atoms is 10 11 spin/mm 3 , which were generated in the process of degradation of CS by ZnO/ZIS under visible light. The production of EPFRs chiefly includes two procedures: chemical adsorption and transfer of electrons. The adsorption energy of precursor P8 on ZnIn 2 S 4 side is −1.91 eV, the electrons transferred from precursor P8 and P11 to ZnO/ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction. Surprisingly, EPFRs have little negative effects on the degradation process of CS by ZnO/ZIS. The study was not only a key field in the development of photocatalysis technology , but also a new way to study the removal mechanism of antibiotics.

Controllable synthesis of porous boron nitride fibers modified by cobalt and nickel oxides for efficient ceftriaxone sodium adsorption from aqueous solution

Dong Wang,Shaobo Yang,Song Yan,Yaxin Gu,Yi Fang,Chaochao Cao,Chengchun Tang

Antibiotics can easily enter the water environment through direct or indirect approach, causing environmental pollution and endangering the health of organisms. Therefore, development of highly efficient adsorbent materials to adsorb and remove antibiotics is necessary. Here, cobalt oxide and nickel oxide are uniformly and tightly bonded on the surface of porous boron nitride fibers (PBNFs-NiCo), increasing the number of functional groups (B–O and N–H) and hydrogen bond receptors within PBNFs. The total pore volume and specific surface area of resulting PBNFs-NiCo can reach up to 0.48 cm3 g−1 and 720.3 m2 g−1, respectively. Encouraged by the unique micromorphology and chemical composition mentioned above, PBNFs-NiCo exhibits excellent ceftriaxone sodium (CS) adsorption ability, showing the adsorption capacity and removal efficiency up to 410.9 mg g−1 and 96.5%, respectively. Chemical adsorption plays an important role in their adsorption behavior, abiding by Langmuir adsorption theory and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Importantly, PBNFs-NiCo exhibits fascinating adsorption effects in surroundings with pH ranging from 4 to 6, 25 °C and varying salt concentrations. This work would establish a practical and feasible foundation for the practical application of PBNFs-NiCo for CS adsorption in aqueous solution.

Impacts of ceftriaxone exposure during pregnancy on maternal gut and placental microbiota and its influence on maternal and offspring immunity in mice

Ruyue Cheng,Jiawen Guo,Yujie Zhang,Guo Cheng,Wei Qian,ChaoMin Wan,Ming Li,Francesco Marotta,Xi Shen,Fang He

This study aimed to investigate the association between microbiota found in the maternal gut and placenta, and whether ceftriaxone exposure during pregnancy could alter these microbiota, and consequently affect the immunity of the mothers and their offspring. The microbiota in the feces and placenta of the dams were comprehensively analyzed using16S rRNA sequencing. Furthermore, viable bacteria in the placentas and blood of pups were also isolated by plate cultivation then taxonomically identified in detail by clone sequencing. Serum cytokines collected from dams and pups were quantitatively profiled using Luminex. The spleen organ index of dams was significantly lower and the offspring serum interleukin-6 levels were significantly higher in ceftriaxone-treated mice compared with the control group. The maternal fecal microbiota community was drastically altered in ceftriaxone-treated mice with significantly decreased diversity, depletion of Bacteroidetes and the blooming of Tenericutes. However, the placenta microbiota was dominated by Proteobacteria especially characteristically by Ralstonia, which was distinct from the maternal gut microbiota, regardless of whether ceftriaxone treatment or not. Viable bacteria have been found in placenta and blood cultures. These results indicated that ceftriaxone exposure in pregnancy could dramatically alter maternal intestinal microbiota, which affected the immunity of the mothers and their offspring at least partly, characteristically by enhanced pro-inflammatory responses. This study also indicated that the placenta might harbor its own microbes and the microbes were distinct from maternal gut microbiota, which may not be affected by oral administration of ceftriaxone during pregnancy.
