Applying natural dye is a green and available approach for the dyeing and simultaneous functionalizing of textiles. However, the commonly used mordant of metal ions to improve the dyeing effect results in massive toxic wastewater production, which decreases the environmentally friendly characteristics. In this work, the mordant and water substitute ability of choline chloride-ethylene glycol natural deep eutectic solvent (NADES), defined as the mixture of two or more primary metabolites at a particular composition becoming liquids via H-bond forces, was investigated during the dyeing process because it has been used as a green extraction and stability agent for the natural dye. To this end, the NADES and metal ion were used in three mordant dyeing wool and cotton processes of Platycodon Grandiflorus root dye, and the color and functionalization effect were compared to verify the method advance. The result indicated that natural deep eutectic solvent had a better effect as a mordant than the metal ion by enhancing the dye solubility, the dye uptake rate of fiber, and the dye polymerization trend via rich H-bonds among fiber, dye, and NADES. The dyed textile had an excellent functional performance, including UV resistance, antibacterial, antioxidation, and burning difficulty, with the preferable fastness. This method also showed good universality for other natural dyes and NADESs. Compared to the existing mordant dyeing technologies, the proposed technology had lower chemical reagent usage, cost, and energy consumption, whose residual solvent had good reusability for at least 10 times and better degradability. Overall, this paper supplied a potential and green approach using NADESs as alternatives to metal ions for the mordant dyeing textile using natural dye.

Summary Background The interest toward dyeing hairs with plant colorants has grown in popularity considering its low-toxic nature. However, researches reporting plant hair dyes are limited and the potential adverse effects of irritation are unclear. Objectives This study is aimed to provide an avenue by which to more accurately assess the dyeing efficiency and irritation potentials of plant hair dyes. Methods Four extracted plant colorants were incorporated in hydrogel hair dyes that were directly applied on unbleached gray human hairs. Their dyeing performances and the effect of an iron (Ⅱ) mordant were photometrically measured in CIELab coordinates and color strength. The eye and skin irritancy was assessed by combining various in vitro methods, including bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay in combination with histopathological analysis, Hen’s egg test on chick chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM) and a test on reconstructed human epidermis models. Results The investigated hair dyes exhibited desirable dyeing efficiency on human hairs. Post-treatment with the iron (Ⅱ) mordant caused a significant increase in color strength with subtle changes to the hue of dyed color. In the irritation testing, the four hair dyes were categorized as slight-to-mild eye irritants but possessed no skin irritation potential, while the mordant was determined as a non-irritant. Conclusions The results demonstrate the efficacy of a multi-analytical approach for in vitro assessment of various plant colorants for hair dyeing. The investigated plant extracts are suitable for producing viable colors on human hairs and may serve as a low-irritating alternative to the synthetic hair dyes.

To reuse camellia husk waste and expand the scope of natural dyes, this research proposes pigment extraction from camellia husks and investigates various properties when applied on silk fabrics. Single-factor experiments were used to screen and optimize the dyeing process. The extracted pigments and dyed fibers were analyzed and characterized by LC-MS, FTIR and SEM, respectively. Six metal mordants were compared with each other, and their possible mordanting mechanisms were proposed. Color fastness, UV resistance, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties were evaluated after dyeing. The results showed that the optimal dyeing process was as follows: dyestuff mass 50 g L−1, holding time 45 min, bath pH 3.0, holding temperature 100 °C. LC-MS and FTIR results showed that the pigments in the extracts were mainly dimeric and multimeric procyanidins. Metal ion addition increased the K/S value while the pre-mordanting method had a superior dyeing depth. The rubbing and washing fastness of the dyed fabric were all above grade 4.0. Meanwhile, the dyed sample exhibited favorable UV resistance, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties, including a UPF index of 63.4 and an inhibition rate of 98.74% and 97.39% for S. aureus and E. coli, respectively.

Dyeing and antibacterial properties of a natural dye extracted from Liriope platyphylla fruit applied on silk fabrics have been studied. The total phenolic content (1109.13±69.02 mg), total flavonoid content (530.60±89.44 mg), and total anthocyanin content (492.26±77.79 mg) were measured in 100 g fresh weight of L. platyphylla fruits. In addition, ten anthocyanins and four flavanols were identified in L. platyphylla fruits by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS). A broad variation in color shade and color depth can be achieved with mixtures of dye extracts and metal mordants. Purple, blue, and pale green were main color shades of silk fabrics dyed with the extracts. The fastness of dyed silk fabrics except for control dyed fabrics against light, washing, and rubbing were acceptable with at least a grey scale rating of 3. The antibacterial activities of L. platyphylla fruit extracts were retained on dyed silk fabrics even after home washing 30 cycles. Mordanting with metal salt mordant had a positive effect on antibacterial activity of dyed silk fabrics in this study. Among them, aluminum and copper were the most effective mordants for improving antibacterial activity of silk fabrics dyed with L. platyphylla fruit extracts. The costs of natural dyeing of per silk fabrics kg by the extracts from L. platyphylla fruit were also calculated on laboratory scale.
