Along with the surging demand for rechargeable alkali-ion (Li + , Na + , or K + ) batteries , cost and availability of the battery materials become critical. In this paper, we report the use of spent asphalt , which is widely available and even poses environmental risks, to produce a high-performing universal Li/Na/K-ion host material. Taking advantage of a nano-Fe 2 O 3 template, the spent asphalt is converted into mesoporous carbon with an interconnected three-dimensional porous structure , high surface area, and numerous crystal defects . As an anode material for Li-ion batteries, the mesoporous carbon exhibits a reversible capability of 674.2 mA h g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 as well as excellent rate and cycling performance (258.7 mA h g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 1000 cycles) owing to the shortened diffusion path of ion and easier penetration of electrolytes. The carbon anode also delivers superior reversible capacities and cycling stability in Na-ion and K-ion batteries. With the potential to simultaneously tackle energy and environmental problems, the spent asphalt-derived mesoporous carbon is promising for large-scale applications.

In this work, we fabricated vanadium/zinc metal–organic frameworks (V/Zn-MOFs) derived from self-assembled metal organic frameworks, to further disperse ultrasmall Zn 2 VO 4 nanoparticles and encapsulate them in a nitrogen-doped nanocarbon network (ZVO/NC) under in situ pyrolysis. When employed as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, ZVO/NC delivers a high reversible capacity (807 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ) and excellent rate performance (372 mAh g −1 at 8.0 A g −1 ). Meanwhile, when used in sodium-ion batteries, it exhibits long-term cycling stability (7000 cycles with 145 mAh g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 ). Additionally, when employed in potassium-ion batteries, it also shows outstanding electrochemical performance with reversible capacities of 264 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and 140 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 for 1000 cycles. The mechanism by which the pseudocapacitive behaviour of ZVO/NC enhances battery performance under a suitable electrolyte was probed, which offers useful enlightenment for the potential development of anodes of alkali-ion batteries. The performance of Zn 2 VO 4 as an anode for SIBs/PIBs was investigated for the first time. This work provides a new horizon in the design ZVO/NC as a promising anode material owing to the intrinsically synergic effects of mixed metal species and the multiple valence states of V.

To solve the agglomeration of Fe and low electronic conductivity of FeP anode, a simple route through metal organic framework (MOF)-derived phosphorization has been successfully explored for in-situ encapsulation of FeP nanoparticles in porous carbon framework (FeP@C). The MOF-derived FeP@C anode can substantially inhibit the coarsening of small Fe, improve the electroconductivity and moderate the volume expansion of electrode, leading to superior rate capability and excellent cycling performance for Li-, Na- and K-ions storage. For example, the FeP@C anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 700 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 over 180 cycles for Li-ion batteries, displays a high reversible capacity of 387 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 over 100 cycles for Na-ion batteries and achieve a high reversible capacity of 163 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 over 100 cycles for K-ion batteries. The kinetic analysis , calculated diffusion coefficient and partial density of states (PDOS) results also confirmed this i n-situ carbon encapsulated strategy improves the conductivity of FeP particles facilitating the alkali-ion/electron's transportation.

Li + /Mg 2+ hybrid-ion batteries (LMIBs), integrating the merits of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) are considered as an attractive alternative of next generation metal secondary batteries. Due to the sluggish solid-state diffusion kinetic induced by the strong Coulombic interaction between Mg 2+ and host materials, pristine MoS 2 with interplanar distance of 0.62 nm exhibits inferior electrochemical performance for LMIBs with only Li + intercalation. Herein, we report an oxygen-incorporated MoS 2 (O-MoS 2 ) nanoflower anchored on graphene (O-MoS 2 /G) with the interplanar distance of O-MoS 2 from 0.62 nm expanded to 0.885 nm. Even at 1000 mA g −1 , the expanded interlayer spacing can still ensure the Mg 2+ and Li + intercalation/deintercalation into/from the host material simultaneously. Meanwhile, this configuration can effectively reduce the diffusion barrier of metal ions , increase the intercalated number of ions, and enhance the stability of structure. In addition, we found and demonstrated the intercalated Li + had a boosting effect to the intercalation kinetics of Mg 2+ . Compared with the MIBs, the migration energy barriers of Mg 2+ under the existence of Li + intercalating into MoS 2 is reduced from 0.36 eV to 0.16 eV, meanwhile the corresponding intercalation capacity and diffusion coefficient of Mg 2+ are 1.38 and 7.1 times as large as MIBs. As expect, the O-MoS 2 /G exhibits superior rate capability and cycling performance with a reversible capacity of 123.3 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles charge–discharge processes at 1000 mA g −1 .

Phosphorus sulfide cage molecule based on P 4 S 3 was investigated for the first time as anode material for the storage of alkali metal ions (Li + , Na + , K + ). Such P 4 S 3 sample was obtained in a large scale by a simple heating reaction of low-cost rep P and S. X-ray diffraction refinement analysis indicates that P 4 S 3 sample possesses a defect rich molecule crystal structure with S/P atom ratio of 0.74. The P 4 S 3 anode delivered a high reversible capacity of 1266 mAh g −1 for lithium-ion batteries at 0.1 A g −1 and good cycling performance. Experimental results demonstrated that the P 4 S 3 anode undergoes a reversible Li-storage reaction of P 4 S 3 + 11 Li + + 11 e − ↔ 0.5 Li 4 P 2 S 6 + 3 Li 3 P during cycling. It also exhibited a high capacity of 1002 and 378 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 for Na + and K + storage, respectively. These properties suggest the promising application of P 4 S 3 anode in high energy batteries.

Rechargeable alkali-ion (Li + , Na + , and K + ) batteries with high conversion efficiency have attracted much attention for portable and sizeable energy storage. Deriving valuable battery materials from valueless waste materials is highly desirable to meet the surging demand of energy storage. However, waste-derived carbon materials often show low specific capacity and poor reversibility due to untamed physiochemical properties. In this paper, nitrogen doped meso-macroporous carbon (NMPC) materials are produced from waste asphalt with the assistance of nano-Fe 2 O 3 template and melamine modification. The products show interconnected three-dimensional meso-macroporous structures and tunable nitrogen contents. As an anode material for Li-ion batteries, the NMPC with optimum nitrogen content delivers a reversible capacity of 602.3 mA h g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 . Furthermore, it also discharges a reversible capacity of 210.8 mA h g −1 after 200 cycles and 201.5 mA h g −1 after 500 cycles for Na-ion batteries and K-ion batteries, respectively. The excellent and versatile electrochemical properties enable the concept of waste recovery and resource utilization, which can be used for the manufacture of environmentally friendly energy storage systems .

Organic cathodes for alkali-metal-ion batteries attract great attentions in recent years, but the ion storage sites are limited to some finite functional groups. This is because an organic cathode must have proper lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) to accept electrons at high potential. Herein, a novel type of organophosphate-based cathode has successfully been explored by tuning the LUMO energy level of organophosphates through metal ions with an inert electron pair. For the first time, the P=O of phytate (PA), N,N,N′,N′-ethylenediaminetetrakis(methylene phytate) (EDTMP), and diethylenetriaminepentakis(methyl phytate) (DTPMP) is activated by lead/bismuth (with 6s 2 electron pair) to storage Li/Na/K ions reversibly. Typically, density functional theory calculations indicate that the LUMO energy of Bi-PA is greatly reduced from − 0.99 (PA) to − 4.61 eV, which shows the first discharge capacity of 173, 182 and 206 mAh·g −1 and the reversibly capacity of 102, 102 and 101 mAh·g −1 with the discharge platform of 2.4, 2.1 and 2.4 V for Li/Na/K-ion battery cathodes, respectively. Similarly, with proper LUMO energy level, Pb-PA (− 4.63 eV), Pb-EDTMP (− 3.71 eV), and Pb-DTPMP (− 4.45 eV) all exhibit admirable performance. This unique strategy of organic materials to alkali-metal-ion battery cathodes offers a new avenue for future energy storage systems. Graphical abstract

The construction of anode materials for alkali-ion batteries with high capacity and a long life span is significant and remains challenging. With the increasing interest in vanadium sulfide, V 3 S 4 possesses unique a structure and shows great promise for application in alkali-ion batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). However, it still faces the problems of large volume changes and low electronic conductivities, which limits its practical application. Herein, ultrafine V 3 S 4 nanocrystals evenly integrated within three-dimensional (3D) porous N-doped carbon (N–C) by V–C bond are rational designed to address these issues. The interconnected N–C coating provides bi-continuous electron/ion transport pathways. Also, the 3D porous structure ensures a large surface area, as well as robust structural integrity, boosting reaction kinetics. Moreover, the strengthened interface coupling not only enhances the electron transfer at the interface, but also markedly strengthens structural stability. As expected, the as-prepared electrode showed superior lithium storage capacity, including a high specific capacity of 1021 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , superior rate performance of 698 mA h g −1 at 2.0 A g −1 and excellent cycling stability and prolonged cycling stability of 635 mA h g −1 capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 2 A g −1 . Additionally, it also shows good electrochemical performance as an anode material for SIBs and PIBs. This work demonstrates the superiority of ultrafine crystal confined in a 3D porous carbon network to boost the electrochemical performance in various fields.

Metal sulfides, one kind of electrode material with very high theoretical capacity, have been widely studied for use in lithium and sodium ion batteries. However, there are some problems hindering their applications in electrodes, such as low conductivity and volume expansion. The MOF introduces metals with different coordination strengths into an existing MOF structure, which improves the performance of the electrode to a certain extent. In this paper, Fe/Zn bimetallic MOF rod-like superstructure was prepared based on Ostwald theory. Accompanied by sulfuration, the MOF was effectively combined with MoS2 and GO, and the objective materials Fe7S8-C/ZnS-C@MoS2/rGO composites were successfully prepared. The MOF material provides a good frame and an efficient electron transport path, while the robust rGO wall effectively inhibits the pulverization of materials during the lithium/sodium intercalation/escalation courses. This particular material exhibited excellent cycling and rate capability performance when used in Li/Na-ion batteries. When used in Li-batteries, the electrode material delivered a specific capacity of 1598.3 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and remained at 1196.7 mA h g−1 even after about 100 cycles and further exhibited a specific capacity of 368.68 mA h g−1 at the current rate of 5 A g−1 even after 1000 cycles, respectively. As for sodium batteries, these electrode materials exhibited an initial reversible capacity of 1053.6 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and the reversible capacity was still as high as 592.2 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles. It is perhaps that this composite material with its particular architecture and composition is greatly beneficial for electron transfer and Li/Na ion diffusion. In the repeated physicochemical/nutrifying process, the appropriate distance between adjacent MOFs is of great help in preventing volume changes and thus improving the electrochemical performance.

Dual-ion batteries are attracting much attention due to the joint participation of anions and cations in the energy storage process. However, this unique battery configuration imposes high demands on the cathode, which typically presents an inferior rate performance. Herein, we employ graphite in different microcrystalline sizes as cathodes, associated with high concentration electrolyte to construct sodium dual-ion batteries. The results of in-situ XRD and Raman evidence that the surface effect is enhanced by suitably small graphite microcrystals, where a greater surface involvement affords more electro-activated regions for the ions. Furthermore, the analysis of sputtering XPS confirms that the PF6- is accompanied by the co-intercalation of Na+ into cathodes by constructing the model of concentration effect, thus accelerating the kinetic process. In conclusion, the co-intercalation of PF6- together with Na+ is demonstrated under the influence of enhanced surface concentration effect in cathodes, and thus the cathodes exhibit a superior rate performance with a capacity of 103.6 mAh g-1 at a rate of 2 C and a rate retention of 94.8% even at 50 C. This work provides new insights to explain the mechanism of ion intercalation in dual-ion batteries and offers a perspective for the construction of high energy storage systems.

Metal-organic framework (MOF-5) material was synthesized by solvothermal method. Porous carbon (C) and sulfur-doped porous carbon (S/C) were fabricated by calcining and vulcanization of MOF-5. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the crystal structure and morphology of the samples. The electrochemical performance of C and S/C materials were tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium ion batteries (SIBs). The S/C exhibits the high reversible capacity (1114.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and 485 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 ), as anode for LIBs. It behaves a reversible discharge capacity of 268.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 and a capacity of 157 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 , as anode for SIBs. Compared with C, the electrochamical performance of S/C material is significantly improved. This is mainly because the bigger specific surface area and the doping of sulfur atoms increases the layer spacing and facilitates the kinetics of the intercalation and deintercalation of Li + and Na + ions, especially Na + ions.

The nature of vanadium oxides with multiple valence states and a rich species of oxides facilitates the construction of high performance batteries. Among these, vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ), despite offering several advantages, is seldom reported in anode materials due to its inferior cycling stability and rate performance caused by large volume changes. Herein, we employed a rational structural strategy to assemble VO 2 -NTs/Ti 3 C 2 anode with a multidimensional cross-linked structure using VO 2 nanotubes (VO 2 -NTs) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene . Specifically, the abundant multidimensional channels of VO 2 -NTs/Ti 3 C 2 reduce the diffusion impedance of the ions, and the enhanced intrinsic conductivity and highly robust structure solve the problems originally present in VO 2 , which are verified in characterization and density functional theory calculations. Consequently, the composite electrode shows ultra-high reversible capacity (1425 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 ), excellent cycling performance (516 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 after 2000 cycles) and superior rate performance (703 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 ), and also exhibits decent sodium storage performance, representing the best comprehensive battery performance of VO 2 -based anodes to date.
