Pore-Size-Tuned Pd Films Grown on Ni Foam as an Advanced Catalyst for Electrosynthesis of Ammonia

Ziqiang Wang,Zechuan Dai,Hongjie Yu,Hugang Zhang,Wenjing Tian,You Xu,Xiaonian Li,Liang Wang,Hongjing Wang

Electrochemical ammonia synthesis is considered as an alternative sustainable method to the traditional Haber–Bosch process because of the reduced energy consumption and mild operation conditions. The key is to design efficient electrocatalysts for facile adsorption and activation of nitrogen. Herein, a nanoporous Pd film with a tunable pore size has been in situ grown on Ni foam (nPd/NF) via a micelle-assisted replacement method using NF as a reductant and substrate, where polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) and 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene serve as a pore-forming agent and a swelling agent, respectively. Combining the continuous large nanoporous structure and self-supported properties, the obtained nPd/NF exhibits excellent catalytic performance for ammonia synthesis with a high NH3 yield of 18.27 μg h–1 mgcat–1 and a faradaic efficiency of 10.36% in 0.1 M Na2SO4. This work provides a fascinating route for the rational design of self-supported porous noble metals with a tunable pore size for effective electrosynthesis of ammonia.

Highly Hydrophobic and Superoleophilic Nanofibrous Mats with Controllable Pore Sizes for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Botao Song,Qing Xu

Both the wettability and pore size of filtration materials are of great importance in oil/water separation. However, conventional strategies have mainly focused on the fabrication of filtration materials with special wettability, regardless of the pore size. Herein, we demonstrated the design and construction of special wettable nanofibrous mats with tunable pore sizes as filtration materials for selective and efficient separation of oil from oil/water mixtures. The nanofibrous mats with different pore sizes were prepared by the electrospinning approach using a stainless steel wire mesh as the collector, and the results indicated that the pore size of the nanofibrous mats gradually increased with the decrease in the mesh number. The results of the wettability behavior demonstrated that all of the nanofibrous mats showed highly hydrophobic and superoleophilic properties. Owing to the special wettability and the porous structure, the nanofibrous mats were sequentially applied for oil/water separation, and they showed excellent ability to separate both layered oil/water mixture and water-in-oil emulsion; moreover, it was also found that the oil flux could be highly improved by controlling the pore size of the nanofibrous mat and that the oil flux of the nanofibrous mat with the largest pore size was about 10 times higher than that of the conventional nonwoven mat that had the smallest pore size. The nanofibrous mats developed with controllable pore sizes can therefore be practically used as highly efficient filtration materials in the management of oily water.

Tailoring pore size and interface of superhydrophobic nanofibrous membrane for robust scaling resistance and flux enhancement in membrane distillation

Guangming Tan,Di Xu,Zhigao Zhu,Xuan Zhang,Jiansheng Li

Electrospun nanofibrous membrane with ultrafine nanofibers , high porosity, and interconnected pores has attracted significant attention in high-flux membrane distillation (MD). However, the comparatively large pore size and low liquid entry pressure (LEP) of nanofibrous membranes often result in severe membrane scaling and wetting. In this work, superhydrophobic nanofibrous membranes with tailored membrane pore size and interface were successfully fabricated via sequential electrospinning and electrospraying approaches. Results revealed that the decreased membrane pore size and increased interface evaporation area could synchronously mitigate membrane scaling and improve water flux. Besides, the water recovery of the membrane could be further increased with the aid of antiscalant, e.g., polymer polyacrylic acid, toward treating a nearly saturated gypsum solution. The excellent concentration performance was attributed to the cooperation of the antiscalant that inhibits the nuclei formation and the engineered surface that reduced the adhesion between the membrane interface and gypsum crystals. Notably, the resultant membrane also showed a high initial flux of ∼40 L m −2  h −1 and high salts rejection efficiency of ∼100% in a continuous concentration process for over 100 h. Our study provides a promising methodology for preparing novel membrane surfaces to treat hypersaline wastewaters meeting the minimal/zero liquid charge target.

Tailoring Emulsification-Functional SnO2–Metal Composite Membranes with Robust Blade-Shaped Pore Walls for Uniform and Size-Controlled Metal Microspheres

Yuying Jiang,Shilong Li,Luyi Chai,Sinuo Cao,Rongxin Zhu,Xingwei Liu,Yu Guo,Wenheng Jing

Liquid metal microspheres are pivotal in biomedicine, catalysis, and microfluidics, yet their synthesis via membrane emulsification remains hindered by high surface tension and poorly controlled pore sizes in conventional metal membranes, leading to nonuniform microspheres. Addressing this, we developed a ceramic–metal composite membrane using 2D SnO2 with blade-shaped pore walls and tunable pores (0.68–7.92 μm) via in situ hydrothermal synthesis. The blade-shaped pore walls reduce liquid metal surface tension, enabling smooth extrusion through pores while suppressing aggregation. This design leverages the membrane’s large metal contact angle and structural robustness to enhance emulsification under harsh conditions. The resultant microspheres exhibit precise size control (average particle size: 8.79–35.89 μm) and narrow distribution (Span: 0.41–0.84), outperforming traditional methods. By integrating adjustable pore engineering with ceramic–metal interfaces, this work establishes a scalable strategy for fabricating functional membranes tailored to high-surface-tension systems.

Improving Proton-Conducting Stability by Regulating Pore Size of MOF Materials through Mixed Grinding

Jie Liu,Wenxuan Yan,Yingying Ma,Xinran Li,Jiajun Zhong,Xiaofeng Zheng,Zhe Liu

An effective strategy to improve the proton conductivity of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is to regulate the pore size of composite materials. In this work, composite materials of MOF-808@MOG-808-X (X is the mass ratios of MOF-808 to MOG-808) was successfully prepared by grinding and blending. MOF-808@MOG-808-1:2 was optimal for its suitable pore structure, which facilitates the practical construction of hydrogen bonding networks, promotes rapid and stable proton conduction, and enables the proton conductivity, achieving a 1 + 1 > 2 effect. At 353 K and 93% relative humidity (RH), the maximum proton conductivity of MOF-808@MOG-808-1:2 reaches 1.08 × 10–1 S·cm–1. Next, MOF-808@MOG-808-1:2 was blended with chitosan (CS) to obtain composite proton exchange membranes (PEMs), namely, CS@MOF-808@MOG-808-1:2-Y (Y = 5%, 10%, or 15%) with the maximum proton conductivity reaching 1.19 × 10–2 S·cm–1 at 353 K and 93% RH for CS@MOF-808@MOG-808-1:2-10% with additional stability. The conductive mechanisms of the composite materials were revealed by activation energy calculation. This investigation not only proposes a simple grinding–blending method for the development of MOF-doped composite materials for proton conductivity but also provides a producting material basis for future applications of MOFs in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Ultrathin nanofilm with tailored pore size fabricated by metal-phenolic network for precise and rapid molecular separation

Chun-Er Lin,Ming-Yong Zhou,Wei-Song Hung,Bao-Ku Zhu,Kueir-Rarn Lee,Li-Ping Zhu,Li-Feng Fang

The tailored nanofilms have attracted a rapidly growing interest in various separation processes. Recently, microporous materials have provided a promising way to meet this requirement due to their distinct structures. However, suffering from the uncontrollable heterogeneous nucleation, crystalline materials are difficult to form the ultrathin and defect-free nanofilms. Herein, tannic acid (TA)/Fe 3+ complex, which was microporous amorphous material, was fabricated on the ultrafiltration membrane via the layer-by-layer technique. Interestingly, in addition to the pH value mentioned in the literature, the aggregation of Fe 3+ in the aqueous solution was also found to have significant influence on chemical composition and physical structure of the complex. Through the strict control on the Fe 3+ aggregation, the defect-free TA/Fe 3+ nanofilm has an average pore size of 0.7 nm, which was the smallest among the reported TA/Fe 3+ nanofilms. More importantly, the pore size of nanofilm was in accordance with our expectation, and the molecular dynamic simulation further confirmed the result. It demonstrated that the tailored pore structure of the nanofilm can be designed on the basis of the molecular structure. Moreover, the nanofilm has an ultrathin thickness of 5 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the nanofilm was the thinnest nanofilm used for liquid separation. Compared with the nanofilms made by various materials, the TA/Fe 3+ nanofilm obviously broke through the selectivity-permeability trade-off of the nanofilms, with the ultrathin thickness and the narrow pore size distribution. Additionally, the TA/Fe 3+ nanofilm can precisely separate molecules that were close in size. This work provides a facile method to fabricate tailored nanofilms with high performance designed at a molecular level.

Low-crystallinity ZIF-8/dcIm membranes for CO2 sieving

Yali Zhao,Xitai Cai,Wufeng Wu,Libo Li,Yanying Wei,Haihui Wang

Metal-organic framework membranes have shown great potential for efficient separation applications. However, unavoidable grain boundary defects and the inconstant pore size due to framework flexibility hinder the application of MOF membranes for gas separation. Herein, low-crystallinity ZIF-8/dcIm-x membranes are synthesized via fast current-driven synthesis. The competitive coordination of 4,5-dichloroimidazole (dcIm) linker leads to the formation of a low-crystallinity MOF with reduced grain boundary defects for better gas separation performance. Meanwhile, the in-situ substitution of the mIm linker by dcIm narrows the pore size and transforms the ZIF-8 structure in the stiffened Cm polymorph, allowing precise CO 2 sieving. Consequently, the low-crystallinity ZIF-8/dcIm-14 membrane exhibits a promising CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 32.4 with a CO 2 permeance of 1.73 × 10 −8  mol m −2  s −1 Pa −1 , which surpasses other membranes. Furthermore, the membrane presents a remarkable pressure resistance up to 3 bar and stable temperature-swing operation between room temperature and 125 °C over 120 h.

Cobalt and nitrogen-doped carbon with enlarged pore size derived from ZIF-67 by a NaCl-assisted pyrolysis strategy towards oxygen reduction reaction

Suo Yange,Zhang Zihan,Zhang Zhiguo,Hu Guilin

In this work, a facile method is reported for the synthesis of ZIF-67-derived cobalt and nitrogen-doped carbon (Co-N-C) materials with enlarged average pore sizes as electrocatalysts towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The pore diameters of the Co-N-C can be greatly enlarged using NaCl as an additive during the pyrolyzing process. Thermo-gravimetry (TG) results suggest that NaCl could facilitate the structural decomposition of ZIF-67, resulting in the adjusted physiochemical properties of the obtained Co-N-C materials. The CoNC-1NaCl-700 and CoNC-1NaCl-800 materials derived from ZIF-67 in the presence of NaCl at relatively high pyrolyzing temperatures (i.e., 700 °C, 800 °C) exhibit superior catalytic activity compared with the CoNC materials derived from pure ZIF-67, which could be due to their unique structures of larger average pore sizes, higher surface areas, higher contents of pyridinic-N and graphitic-N. The onset potential of the CoNC-1NaCl-800 towards ORR is 0.94 V (vs. RHE) and the half-wave potential is 0.84 V (vs. RHE), which are comparable with that of commercial Pt/C.

3D Janus sponge with controllable pore size for stable separation of oil-water emulsion and dye contaminants

Yiyan Gao,Xiaojuan Yan,Ying Chen,Ying Sui,Ning Wang,Tianyu Wang,Guanghui Gao

The development of separation materials with high flux, anti-oil fouling, long-term stability, and the ability to remove various pollutants is an urgent requirement in the field of oil-water separation. Herein, we designed a Janus sponge with multiple separation functions. Specifically, we first prepared the PCA-CS gel coating on the polyurethane (PU) sponge through the co-deposition of protocatechuic acid (PCA) and chitosan (CS), and then Janus sponge was obtained through bottom-up approach of adsorbing stearic acid (SA) and an ethanol suspension of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ). The prepared Janus sponge exhibits excellent wetting behavior and oil adhesion resistance, and can maintain stable performance in acidic, alkaline, saline solutions and ultrasonic environment. The pore size of the Janus sponge can be adjusted by mechanical compression to efficiently separate various types of emulsions, dyes and mixed wastewater. Among them, the emulsion and dye separation efficiency can both be above 99.6 %, and can maintain the high flux with 15372.7 L m −2 h −1 . More importantly, the prepared Janus sponge can effectively remove the emulsified oil droplets from the wastewater generated by the automotive final assembly shop. Consequently, it can be predicted that Janus sponge exhibits great application potential in emulsion and dye wastewater treatment.

Controlling the size of a Zn-MOF through ligand exchange and pore-tailored ZnO assemblies for size-selective gas sensing

Rui Zhang,Wanqing Song,Mingjing Wang,Huiming Ji

Metal–organic framework (MOF) materials with controlled microstructures have become popular in the last few decades. In this study, Zn-MOF precursors with diverse crystallinity and particle size (20–800 nm) were synthesized using an accelerating or retarding nucleation process by introducing various secondary ligands, which were employed as modulators in the coordination and ligand exchange equilibria according to their different acidity coefficients. Thus, the pore size of MOF-derived ZnO clusters was different, resulting in diverse gas sensing properties. Moreover, large precursor-derived ZnO-(2 and 3) assemblies with the micropore sizes of 1 nm and 0.75 nm showed size-selective sensing and better performance, which exhibited a higher and fast response (4 s) to butanone and n-butanol with the lengths of 0.664 nm and 0.499 nm, respectively, and a low limit of detection (0.1 ppm). This simple method of controlling the nucleation of MOFs and the pore size of ZnO assemblies paved a new way towards the design of the microstructure of MOF-based functional materials.

Rational Design of Mesoporous Silica (SBA-15)/PF (Phenolic Resin) Nanocomposites by Tuning the Pore Sizes of Mesoporous Silica

Hongxia Liu,Yijia Lao,Jiayi Wang,Junjie Jiang,Chuanbai Yu,Yuanli Liu

The development of composite materials with functional additives proved to be an effective way to improve or supplement the required properties of polymers. Herein, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with different pore sizes were used as functional additives to prepare SBA-15/PF (phenolic resin) nanocomposites, which were prepared by in situ polymerization and then, compression molding. The physical properties and structural parameters of SBA-15 with different pore sizes were characterized by N2adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal properties of the SBA-15/PF hybrid were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical, friction, and dynamic mechanical properties of SBA-15/PF nanocomposites were also studied. The results revealed that the pore sizes of SBA-15 have a significant effect on the resulting SBA-15/PF hybrid and SBA-15/PF nanocomposites. The thermal stability of the SBA-15/PF hybrid was dramatically improved in comparison with pure PF. The friction and dynamic mechanical properties of the SBA-15/PF nanocomposites were enhanced significantly. Specifically, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the nanocomposite increased by 19.0 °C for the SBA-15/PF nanocomposites modified with SBA-15-3. In addition, the nanocomposite exhibited a more stable friction coefficient and a lower wear rate at a high temperature. The enhancement in thermal and frictional properties for the nanocomposites is ascribed to the confinement of the PF chains or chain segments in the mesopores channels.Keywords:SBA-15/PF;nanocomposites;pore expanding;thermal properties;frictional properties

Enhancing Cytochrome C Recognition and Adsorption through Epitope-Imprinted Mesoporous Silica with a Tailored Pore Size

Dandan Cheng,Xin Han,Jiawen Zou,Zhenyu Li,Meiru Wang,Yuqing Liu,Kexuan Wang,Yan Li

We have reported the synthesis of epitope-imprinted mesoporous silica (EIMS) with an average pore size of 6.2 nm, which is similar to the geometrical size of the target protein, cytochrome C (Cyt c, 2.6 × 3.2 × 3.3 nm3), showing great recognition and large-scale adsorption performance. The characteristic fragment of Cyt c was used as a template and docked onto the surface of C16MIMCl micelles via multiple interactions. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the successful preparation of EIMS. Due to the ordered pore structure, larger pore size, and high specific surface area, the prepared EIMS show superior specificity (IF = 3.8), excellent selectivity toward Cyt c, high adsorption capacity (249.6 mg g–1), and fast adsorption equilibrium (10 min). This study demonstrates the potential application of EIMS with a controllable pore size for high-effective and large-scale separation of Cyt c, providing a new approach for effective biomacromolecular recognition.
