Corrosion behaviour of magnesium alloy AZ80 alloyed with Nd in simulated concrete pore solutions

Qi Zou,Qichi Le,Liang Ren,Chunyan Ban,Chenglu Hu,Yunchang Xin,Qing Liu,Wenyi Hu,Songhua Chen,Andrej Atrens

The corrosion behaviour of Nd alloyed magnesium alloy AZ80 in three simulated concrete pore solutions (SCPs) was studied using corrosion immersion tests and electrochemical tests. The study investigated the effects of the composition and pH of the SCPs on the corrosion properties of AZ80 and AZ80-1.0Nd using aluminum alloy AA6061 as a reference. The SCP1, SCP2, and SCP3 solutions were the simulated concrete pore solutions with different carbonation stages at pH 13.5, 12.5, and 9.7 respectively. The corrosion mainly in the form of localized corrosion, developed significantly along the transverse direction, and less in the vertical direction. AZ80 and AZ80-1.0Nd exhibited the best corrosion resistance in the SCP2 solution, which was attributed to the formation of a dense protective film on the surface. The corrosion in the high alkalinity SCP1 solution was first enhanced within 12 h and then somewhat decreased within 72 h attributed to the destruction and re-formation of the surface film. AA6061 corroded severely in the SCP1 solution and suffered significantly less corrosion in the SCP2 and SCP3 solutions. Nd alloying contributed to the reduced corrosion rates of AZ80 in the simulated concrete pore solutions, attributed to changes in the microstructure and electrochemical properties.

Mitigating chloride attack in cementitious materials without compromising other properties via the use of viscosity modifying admixture

Lixiao Zhao,Pan Feng,Xuyan Shen,Hui Rong,Changwen Miao,Guoqing Geng

To mitigate the harmful chemicals ingression into cementitious materials , traditional methods often aim to densify the pore structure , posing challenges for concrete dead-load or crack control. This paper proposes a facile method to mitigate chloride attack via increasing the pore solution viscosity in cementitious material without changing the matrix density or compromising other properties. The results indicate that the addition of viscosity modifying admixtures (VMAs) to the mortar, as an equivalent mass replacement of mixing water, can mitigate chloride ingress. Although it reduces the early age hydration heat, the mechanical strength at full age (3 d–28 d) and the porosity at 28 d remain unchanged when using an effective VMA (PEG1000). In addition, the matrix resistance to leaching is improved as well. These results may be attributed to the enhanced pore solution viscosity and the coexistence of VMA and C–S–H with decreased interlayer distance and shortened mean chain length. After 28 d of exposure, the most effective experimental group (PEG1000) showed approximately a 28 % decrease in chloride diffusion coefficient compared to the control group. This paper may inspire new technology to mitigate ions diffusion and promote its practical application.

Synergistic inhibition of benzotriazole and sodium D-gluconate on steel corrosion in simulated concrete pore solution

Tengfei Xiang,Yanli Zhang,Linjing Cui,Jiaqi Wang,Depeng Chen,Shunli Zheng,Yujie Qiang

Herein, the synergistic inhibition of two typical corrosion inhibitors benzotriazole (BTA) and sodium D -gluconate (SD) on the corrosion of Q235 steel in simulated concrete pore solution (SCP) were systematically studied. The results demonstrated that the mixed BTA/SD showed an excellent anti-corrosion performance and the inhibition efficiency of (BTA/SD, 1ː1) was as large as 98.33 % which is higher than that of BTA (88.65 %) and SD (92.16 %). Furthermore, the synergistic inhibition effect of BTA/SD was also researched by surface analysis technologies, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) result verified that the BTA/SD adsorbed on steel, while both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images proved that the mixed BTA/SD can effectively protect the steel from corrosion in SCP solution which containing corrosive ions. In addition, the anti-corrosion mechanism of the mixed BTA and SD was revealed by adsorption model and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation, the mixed BTA/SD corrosion inhibitors showed the largest K ads , the lowest ∆ G ads and the largest binding energy values , demonstrating the strong adsorption on steel and the best anti-corrosion performance. The results of this work can provide experimental and theoretical references for the corrosion protection of reinforced concrete structures while using synergistic inhibitors.

Self-healing anticorrosion one-step electrodeposited layered double hydroxide coating on steel rebar in concrete pore solution

Houze Zhou,Wencong Deng,Qi Wang,Rui Liang,Danqian Wang

A phosphate-intercalated layered double hydroxide (PO 4 -LDH) coating was fabricated on carbon steel via a facile one-step electrodeposition method for enhanced corrosion protection. The resulting nanoscale coating, incorporating PO₄³⁻ ions and Cu/Al oxides, exhibits improved integrity and compactness. Electrochemical tests in saturated Ca(OH)₂ solution (simulating concrete pore environment) demonstrated that the PO 4 -LDH coating significantly improves corrosion resistance, offering protection two orders of magnitude greater than bare steel. The coating effectively prevents corrosion upon chloride attack and exhibits self-healing capability for artificial scratches in chloride-containing solution. During immersion, the LDH structure reconstructs via dissolution of Al and incorporation of Ca, leading to increased crystallinity. The release of inhibitor ions (PO₄³⁻ and NO₃⁻) during this reconstruction is considered the key mechanism for the observed anticorrosion and self-healing performance.

An imide-based organic polymer as an inhibitor for HRB400 steel in simulated concrete pore solution: Experimental and theoretical calculations

Qi Wang,Shaopeng Fu,Xingyao Yang,Qinghao Sun,Junwei Zhang,Yichun Peng,Rongling Zhang,Zezhou Liang,Jianfeng Li

An organic nitrogen/oxygen-rich polymer (PFN-NDIN) was prepared via Suzuki reaction between 2,7-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-9,9-bis(3-N,N- dimethylaminopropyl)-9H-fluorene (FNB) and 4,9-dibromo-2,7-bis(3-(dimethyl-amino)propyl)naphthalenediimide (NDINBr 2 ) and utilized as a new inhibitor for HRB400 steels corrosion in alkaline medium of simulated concrete pore solution. The inhibition efficiency of this inhibitor was evaluated by electrochemical techniques. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that the protective capacity of PFN-NDIN on HRB400 steel increased with increasing concentration to attain 92.85% efficacy with 400 ppm at 288 K. Potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) plots indicated that PFN-NDIN is effective and acts as a hybrid inhibitor. The adsorption behavior of PFN-NDIN was fitted and found to follow the Langmuir isothermal adsorption line, with discussion of the relevant thermodynamic parameters. The effect of temperature on this inhibitor's the rust-inhibiting effect was investigated. The surface was then studied, showing that the interfacial corrosion of HRB400 steel was inhibited by PFN-NDIN molecules. The relationship between PFN-NDIN molecules’ structure and the inhibition efficiency was investigated by quantum chemical calculations. Several parameters were calculated, the findings revealed that the prepared materials correlated well with their electronic contribution capability.

Corrosion Inhibition Effect and Mechanism of Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitors on Mild Steel in Simulated Concrete Pore Solution: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Minghui Jiang,Xiao Liu,Yurui Xu,Shiyu Li,Xiangju Liu,Xiaokai Niu,Lei Lu,Xinru Sun,Zhitian Xie,Ziming Wang,Su-ping Cui

Natural biobased materials, which can be obtained from crustacean exoskeletons, angelica sinensis, vanilla beans, amino acids, etc., have significant potential as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors. In this study, several eco-friendly materials (chitosan (CTS), ferulic acid (FA), cysteine (Cys), and methionine (Met)) were proposed as corrosion inhibitors to improve the corrosion resistance of steel. Their inhibition effects and mechanisms in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution were evaluated by electrochemical, surface measurements, quantum chemical (QC) calculations, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results showed that these inhibitors effectively improved the corrosion resistance of steel, especially for CTS (with a maximum inhibition efficiency of 92.6%). The adsorption of these inhibitors followed Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, revealing the physical–chemical mixed adsorption modes. Surface characterization techniques revealed that the protective layers formed by these inhibitors could effectively inhibit the corrosion of the steel. QC calculations and MD simulations further confirmed the experimental results. Performance of cement mortar measurements revealed that these four inhibitors exhibited no effect on the workability of fresh mortar and improved the strength of mortar specimens, with a maximum increase in the compressive strength of 11.18%. This study is of great significance to improving the durability of reinforced concrete in the future.

Preparation and corrosion inhibition performance of controlled-release ethyl cellulose@D-sodium gluconate microcapsules in simulated concrete pore solution

Wen Yang,Yunbo Tong,Yong Yang,Qianping Ran,Lei Dong

The application of corrosion inhibitors is a widely adopted strategy for protecting reinforcing steel against electrochemical degradation. However, conventional direct-addition approaches often lead to premature inhibitor depletion and lack controlled-release functionality. In this study, a novel sustained-release capsule-type inhibitor was developed to combat chloride-induced steel corrosion. Ethyl cellulose with high alkali resistance, controllable release and good mechanical properties was used as the shell material and D -sodium gluconate as the core, using a phase separation method and the preparation of the capsule was verified by TG, FT-IR and SEM. The experiment showed that the resulting capsules displayed a "pea-pod" shape (about 0.5–1.0 μm in length and 0.2 μm in diameter) with a compact core/shell structure and when the core/shell ratio was 1:5, the maximum encapsulation efficiency of the capsules was 73.3 %. When dispersed in simulated concrete pore solution, the capsules enabled sustained release of D -sodium gluconate over multiple days. EIS and LPR were used for electrochemical test. And the electrochemical analysis confirmed that the capsule-based inhibitor effectively suppressed corrosion and improved corrosion resistance. Specifically, a dosage of 0.05 % resulted in an inhibition efficiency of 90.7 ± 1.2 % after 7 days. The core-to-shell ratio was identified as a critical factor governing both the release kinetics and the overall protective performance, with the 1:5 formulation demonstrating optimal corrosion inhibition. This study offers a promising strategy for the design and application of intelligent corrosion inhibitors in reinforced concrete structures.

Revisiting the strengthening mechanisms of graphene oxide reinforced cement: Effects of dispersion states

Xinming Wang,Jing Zhong

When GO suspension is mixed with cement, different GO dispersion states exist, including well-dispersed state (WDS), grain-adsorbed state (GAS), and self-agglomerated state (SAS). Although the seeding effect mechanism of GO in WDS is well accepted, how GO in GAS and SAS impacts hydration is still an open question. In this study, we selectively studied the effects of GAS and SAS on tricalcium silicate (C 3 S) hydration. The results revealed that GO in GAS limits the accessibility of reactant for hydration at early age, without notably affecting the subsequent hydration. Instead, GO in SAS strongly absorbs calcium ions from pore solution to significantly decrease its over-saturation degree, which results in more tightly compacted hydrates formed on C 3 S surface and thus inhibits hydration. These results lead to an improved understanding of GO in cement hydration , and help us unlock the potential of GO in cementitious materials .
