There are a large number of nano-micron pores on the surface of the rock layer, and during the drilling process, water molecules will penetrate into the formation through these nano-micron pores, causing hydration and expansion of the rock, causing instability of the wellbore and other problems. Nano-micron plugging agents can effectively seal the nano-micron pores in the formation, reducing the hydration and expansion of the formation. This paper synthesized the ternary copolymer (AAK) using modified nano silica (KH-570), acrylamide (AM), and 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) as raw materials, and used it as a plugging agent in water-based drilling fluids. The characterization and performance of AAK were studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, particle size analyzer, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric experiments. The plugging performance was evaluated using microporous filter membrane temperature and pressure tests, liner swelling tests, immersion test, and contact angle tests. In addition, its tackiness and salt resistance were also tested. The results indicate that the particles of AAK are nanoscale particles, which can effectively seal the nano and micro pores in rock blocks. At the same time, AAK has good temperature and salt resistance. The addition of AAK does not significantly change the rheological properties of the drilling fluid and can be used as a plugging agent in water-based drilling fluids.

The development of nanomicrometer pores and microfractures in shale gas formation leads to frequent wellbore instability during shale gas drilling, which seriously restricts the safe and rapid drilling of shale gas. In this work, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM), N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (HEAA), styrene (St), and nano-SiO2 were used as raw materials to prepare the temperature-responsive nanocomposite named NHS/SiO2. NHS/SiO2 was highly sensitive and exhibited reversible temperature sensitivity, with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 82 °C. The amphiphilicity of NHS/SiO2 positively affected the stability of oil-based drilling fluids (OBDFs). The effects of NHS/SiO2 on the plugging property of shale were tested by experiments on fluid loss, pressure transfer rate, shale specific surface area, shale pore volume, and shale strength. NHS/SiO2 significantly plugged shale pores at 130 °C, with a specific surface area reduction rate of shale from 22.19% to 65.95% and pore volume reduction rate of shale from 30.73% to 68.51%. NHS/SiO2 exhibited obvious oil adsorption in white oil and the water-in-oil emulsions after reaching the LCST. The maximum oil adsorption rate of NHS/SiO2 in the water-in-oil emulsion was about 23.41 g/g. Finally, the mechanism of NHS/SiO2 to improve the shale stability in OBDFs was further proposed. At high temperatures, NHS/SiO2 increased its elastic deformation ability by adsorbing oil for a long time, thus improving the plugging efficiency.

Wellbore instability of deep and ultra-deep formations is critical in the drilling industry. To solve the problem of plugging material failure in high-temperature environments and plug micron-scale pores, it is crucial to develop a plugging agent that can maintain its effectiveness in high-temperature scenarios. In this study, a high-temperature-resistant plugging agent was synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The copolymer consisting of acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), styrene (St) was named ASDS. ASDS was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), particle size distribution, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The rheological property and filtration performance of ASDS in various temperature conditions were evaluated by rheological and filtration performance tests, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that ASDS was smooth and malleable with a median particle size distribution of 1720 nm, and it exhibited good thermal stability with an initial thermal decomposition temperature of up to 316.9 °C. The ASDS maintains persistent plugging performance up to high temperatures of 180 °C for various pore sizes of filter medium. This resulted in a 56.6% reduction in filtration loss with filter paper and a reduction from 122 mL to 60 mL with ceramic sand disks under 180 °C 3.5 Mpa. This paper presents a preparation method for a plugging agent with good plugging performance in high-temperature conditions, which has potential applications in water-based drilling fluids.

Severe shale wellbore instability accidents in water-based drilling fluids encourage research and development of new inhibitors and nanoplugging agents. In this work, we synthesized a multifunctional superhydrophobic nanosilica (SA), which could form a hydrophobic film on the shale surface, imparting inhibiting and plugging properties. The composition and surface morphology of SA were characterized, and the results showed that SA was spherical at around 30 nm. The inhibiting performances were evaluated by hot-rolling recovery, linear swelling, and water spontaneous imbibition tests. The plugging performance of SA was appraised by the filtration test with nanofilter paper and pressure transmission tests. The strengthening of shale core mechanical stability properties of SA was also appraised by the uniaxial compressive tests. The results showed that SA performed excellently at inhibiting shale hydration. The recovery rate of shale cuttings at 180 °C reached 64.8%. In addition, due to the low surface energy, SA particles could disperse stably at the nanoscale and perform well at plugging the nanopores and fractures, effectively reducing the filtration loss by 75% compared with the base fluids and limiting the pressure transmission through the shale. The compressive tests showed that after the shale cores were immersed in deionized (DI) water, 2% SA, and 3% aqueous suspensions at 150 °C for 48 h, the compressive strength of the shale cores decreased by 26.69, 3.88, and −2.22%, respectively, proving that SA could effectively alleviate the decrease of shale strength and even increase it at higher concentrations. The mechanism research showed that SA could decrease the surface energy of the shale from 81.86 to 1.15 mN/m and change its wettability to superhydrophobic, significantly inhibiting surface hydration. By changing the wettability, SA reversed the direction of the capillary force to offset the osmotic pressure, thereby decreasing the amount of water entering the shale through the nanopores or fractures and effectively inhibiting osmotic hydration. In addition, SA could accumulate on the surface of the shale and form a dense superhydrophobic membrane, providing proper plugging properties.

Effective pore and fracture plugging typically requires the integration of various types and sizes of particles, ranging from nanoscale to microscale, to minimize drilling fluid invasion into the formation. Here, we report novel thermosetting silica nanoparticles decorated with resin (RSNP), which not only retain their nanoscale distribution even at high temperatures but also promote the formation of micrometer-sized particles through interactions with clay in drilling fluids. Characterizations using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TGA-DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were employed to confirm the chemical structure of the synthesized silica nanoparticles and their interaction with clay in the drilling fluid. The plugging effectiveness was systematically assessed using various filter media and natural shale rock samples. TEM and SEM images revealed a narrow, monodisperse particle size distribution of the synthesized silica nanoparticles in the nanoscale, which were found to adsorb on the edges and surfaces of clay lamellae. Original pores and fractures were effectively sealed by silica nanocomposites of comparable size. The strong adsorption of silica nanocomposites on clay particles facilitates clay flocculation in the water phase and expels water molecules from the clay interlayer due to the intercalation and plugging effects of the silica nanocomposites, thereby inhibiting water invasion. Due to the thermosetting nature of the silica nanocomposites, which encapsulate and bridge clay particles at high temperatures, the drilling fluid evolves from a monodisperse to a bimodal particle size distribution, particularly under high-temperature conditions. This transition results in the formation of micrometer-sized particles in water-based drilling fluids, effectively matching the pore and fracture sizes ranging from nanoscale to microscale. These findings offer a novel strategy for designing nanocomposites for multi-stage plugging, optimizing additive usage while minimizing drilling fluid invasion into porous formations.
