Rare earth elements (REEs) in porewater can be useful proxies in the studies of marine geochemistry. The main challenges for the determination of REEs in porewater samples from marine sediments lie in three aspects—low concentration, high salinity, and limited sample sizes (usually only a few millilitres). In this study, a method based on laser ablation (LA) solution sampling ICP-MS for REEs analysis of small volumes (2–4 mL) of porewater is established. With the help of matrix removal and REEs preconcentration from natural liquids by a miniaturized Fe(OH)3 co-precipitation method, a high enrichment factor (10–20 fold) was achieved with only 2 mL of the original liquid, which was preconcentrated to be as small as 100–200 μL. Ultratrace (sub-pg mL−1) analysis was realized through the use of high laser ablation pulse frequency (up to 250 Hz) and based on the high transport efficiency of aerosol particles by the LA system. Due to the almost “dry” ICP condition generated by LA and nitrogen addition (5 mL min−1) to the plasma, the CeO+/Ce+ ratio was reduced to approximately 0.05%, and the total yields of BaO+ and BaOH+ ions were reduced to 0.003%, which means that the potential biases induced by oxide and hydroxide interferences could be negligible. Method validation was achieved through the analysis of the seawater reference material NASS-7 and a spike recovery test with quantitative recoveries of 94–101% for REEs. The application results of porewater samples characterized by no or slight Ce anomalies together with significantly positive Eu anomalies may be indicative of highly reducing and neutral to basic pH conditions. Reagents consumed by the LA-ICP-MS method were significantly reduced, making it a more environment-friendly method. Moreover, the simplicity in sample preparation and lack of need for special reagents or devices give the proposed method great potential for wide applications in the determination of REEs in natural water samples.

This study investigated the efficacy and mechanisms of humic acid (HA)-loaded ferrihydrite (Fh) and magnetite (Mag) in suppressing phosphorus (P) release from sediment into the overlying water (OW) via direct capping, fabric-wrapped capping, and sediment amendment. The results showed that the direct capping, fabric-wrapped capping, and sediment amendment with HA-loaded ferrihydrite (HA-Fh) and magnetite (HA-Mag) effectively mitigated the sedimentary P migration into OW. Specifically, the average reduction efficiencies of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in OW were 94.6%, 74.6%, and 45.0% for HA-Fh under direct capping, fabric-wrapped capping, and amendment conditions, respectively. For HA-Mag, the corresponding efficiencies were 83.9%, 71.1%, and 47.1%. Under HA-Fh and HA-Mag capping, P in the sediment continued to mobilise into the pore water through the microbial and sulphide-mediated chemical reduction of iron (III) (hydr)oxides. However, the capping layers significantly reduced the concentrations of pore water SRP and labile P measured by diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) in the upper sediment. This reduction was crucial for effectively intercepting the sedimentary P migration into OW by HA-Fh and HA-Mag. Our study demonstrates that HA-Fh and HA-Mag are effective capping materials for managing the sediment-derived internal P loading. In other words, even after HA aging treatment, Fh and Mag still remain effective sediment phosphorus release control materials. In addition, the direct capping methods using HA-Fh and HA-Mag are promising due to their high control efficiency and ease of application in preventing P release from sediment into OW.

The immobilization of sedimentary phosphorus (P) by capping sediments with amended calcium peroxide material (ACPM) and CaO 2 was investigated, the sediments and overlying water from a black-odor river. Under the capping with ACPM and CaO 2 , the pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the overlying water were higher than in the control. This contributed to the more loss of external P under the ACPM (the phosphate sorption was fitted well by the Langmuir equation, the maximum P sorption capacity up to 29.28 mg P g −1 ). Additionally, ACPM improves the decrease of the reduction materials (e.g., NH 4 + -N, Fe 2+ ) in the pore water compared to that associated with CaO 2 , resulting in a less obvious dissolved inorganic P (DIP) in the pore water, but the accumulation of DIP in the pore water with CaO 2 suggested an explosive release once the micro-environment conditions encounters adverse conditions. The sharp reduction of Fe/Al-P and Res-P contributes to the increase of DIP in the pore water, with a release of up to 390.60 mg P kg −1 DW (dry weight), whereas the value is only 62.55 mg P kg −1 DW when capped with ACPM. Correspondingly, the percentage of the bioavailable P to Tot-P decreases rapidly from 17.27% (control, 0–2 cm) to 7.21% (ACPM, 0–2 cm) and 10.57% (CaO 2 , 0–2 cm), indicating the obvious P immobilization. The implication is that the application of CaO 2 is not suitable for direct use, while the combination with other materials (e.g., WPS) is a better choice.

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), as persistent emerging contaminants, can migrate into rice systems through the soil-water interface (SWI) during irrigation, threatening food security and human health. However, the diffusion characteristics of PFAS at the SWI under carbon-based material regulation and their solute exchange kinetics remain unclear, particularly the quantitative differences between short-chain (PFBA) and long-chain (PFOA) PFAS behaviors. To address this, this study innovatively integrated molecularly imprinted polymer-diffusive gradients in thin films (MIP-DGT) and high-resolution pore water sampling (HR-Peeper) techniques to systematically investigate the regulatory mechanisms of control (WBC), rice husk biochar (RBC), and montmorillonite-modified biochar (MBC) on the migration and accumulation of PFBA and PFOA in the paddy sediment-water-plant system. The results showed that in WBC-treated soil, the surface C DGT -PFBA and C DGT -PFOA concentrations were 6.76 ± 1.44 ng L −1 and 7.21 ± 2.14 ng L −1 , respectively, while biochar treatments significantly inhibited PFAS migration to deeper layers. Compared to WBC, RBC reduced C DGT -PFBA and C DGT -PFOA in deeper soil layers by 32.80 % and 87.50 %, respectively, with modified biochar exhibiting even stronger retention effects. The constructed 2D-DIFS (DGT-induced fluxes in soils/sediments) model indicated that PFAS re-supply capacity (R-value) from soil to pore water declined with irrigation cycles. PFBA had shorter response times (T c ) and higher mobility, while PFOA was more immobilized due to higher adsorption rate (k −1 ) and partition coefficient (K d ). Notably, compared to WBC, RBC reduced PFBA and PFOA accumulation in rice organs by 24.21 ~ 26.26 %, confirming the dual role of carbon-based materials in altering PFAS interfacial behavior and thereby inhibiting plant uptake. This study clarifies PFAS migration and biotransport responses to carbon-based materials under irrigation, supporting strategies to mitigate PFAS contamination in farmland.

Current methods for determining dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in sediment porewater mainly rely on ex-situ analysis, which can be labor-intensive and introduces errors due to changes in the concentration and morphology during sampling and transportation. Therefore, there is a clear need for in-situ measurement methods for DRP in sediment porewater. In this study, a novel in-situ analytical method was developed by combining diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) and digital imaging techniques, based on the classic phosphomolybdenum blue (PMB) method. During deployment, DRP in sediment porewater diffuses into the DGT device, while reducing reagent (ascorbic acid) from the diffusive gel simultaneously diffuses into the binding gel and reacts with ammonium molybdate, resulting in the formation of PMB compounds. The color of the PMB compounds was recorded in-situ using a digital imaging technique, and the resulting images were analyzed to calculate the concentration of DRP in surface sediment porewater. By using the new method, analytical data of DRP in surface sediment porewater could be quickly obtained in the field near real-time, without water sampling and any further sample treatment, transportation and instrumental analysis in laboratories. The key parameters including the loading procedure for colorimetric reagents in the gels, the concentrations of ammonium molybdate and ascorbic acid, the amount of C18, and the thickness of the C18 binding gel, were systematically optimized. The optimized method demonstrated a wide linear range (4 ‒ 1000 μmol L-1, R2=0.993), with satisfactory accuracy (-6.23% ‒ 8.68%, n = 3) and good precision (6.60% ‒ 13.46%, n = 3) at an exposure time of 60 min. The method also performed well across different salinities (0 ‒ 35) and in the presence of interfering ions (SiO32‒, AsO33‒, F‒, and S2‒). The method was successfully applied to both freshwater and seawater sediments, with results comparable to those obtained using traditional analytical methods. Overall, the proposed method provides a new strategy for in-situ determination of DRP in surface sediment porewater.
