A novel surface molecularly imprinted polymer based on the natural biological macromolecule sporopollenin for the specific and efficient adsorption of resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum extracts

Run-Ze Cao,Zi-Yi Zhang,Jiao Jiao,Qing-Yan Gai,Ying Liu,Yuan Wang,Dan Qu,Yu-Jie Fu

Sporopollenin is a natural biological macromolecule consisting of highly cross-linked carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms, with a highly porous structure and multifunctional groups. In this work, a novel surface molecularly imprinted polymer based on magnetically aminated cattail sporopollenin (MACSp-SMIP) was prepared for the specific and efficient adsorption of resveratrol, with the aim of purifying resveratrol from Polygonum cuspidatum extracts. MACSp-SMIP was found to have a porous structure covered with the multi-layered sponge-like imprinted polymers. MACSp-SMIP had a high adsorption capacity for resveratrol (65.77 mg·g −1 ) and excellent selectivity (imprinting factor 5.64). The adsorption of resveratrol by MACSp-SMIP was a homogeneous diffusion dominated by chemical adsorption with three stages of external diffusion, internal diffusion, and micropore diffusion. MACSp-SMIP was used as an adsorbent in molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction for the purification of resveratrol from P. cuspidatum extracts, achieving a resveratrol recovery of 94.33 % and a purity of 76.67 % in the final products. MACSp-SMIP maintained a satisfactory recovery of resveratrol (88.18 %) after six cycles. Overall, this work developed a promising biological macromolecule-based adsorbent MACSp-SMIP for the specific and efficient adsorption of resveratrol, and also provided an efficient and simple approach for the selective purification of resveratrol from P. cuspidatum extracts for food/nutraceutical applications.

Sporopollenin microencapsulation as a strategy to improve soybean peptide acceptance

Albahi Amgad,Korin Ali,Elkhedir Abdeen,Elsir Elbasheer,Wu Di,Liang Hongshan,Li Bin

This study investigated the potential of using sunflower pollen grains (SPGs) as a carrier for soybean peptides (SoyP) to improve their palatability by masking their bitterness. SoyP is a bioactive macromolecule with various nutritional and medicinal benefits, but the high bitterness makes it unappealing to many consumers. To address this issue, the researchers encapsulated SoyP within SPGs using sodium alginate (SA) as a coating material. The resulting SoyP (Pellet) were analyzed using various techniques, including SEM, CLSM, FTIR, DSC, and XRD. The effectiveness of this taste-masking approach was evaluated using an E-tongue and dissolution under simulated oral conditions. The study found that SoyP (Pellet) exhibited significantly reduced bitterness and increased palatability compared to unencapsulated SoyP due to the moderate interaction between SoyP, SPGs, and SA. The use of sporopollenin microencapsulation presents a promising strategy for masking bitterness in nutraceutical applications and could lead to the development of more palatable functional foods and supplements.

Dual-Propelled Sporopollenin-Exine-Capsule Micromotors for Near-Infrared Light Triggered Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Sihao Pan,Jiaoyu Ren,Enhui Ma,Ke Wang,Sicheng Yang,Hong Wang

Graphical Dual-propelled sporopollenin-exine-capsule (SEC) micromotors loaded with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) have been developed towards on-site degradation of organic pollutants. Near-infrared (NIR) light is employed to trigger the rupture of the magnetic polydopamine (PDA) outer coating and release the platinum-coated SECs loaded with HRP enzyme. Towards on-site degradation of organic pollutants, dual-propelled sporopollenin-exine-capsule (SEC) micromotors loaded with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) have been developed. The magnetic propulsion of SEC micromotors enables them to follow predesignated paths to arrive the pollution site, while the chemical propulsion on the site accelerates the degradation process taking advantage of the fluid mixing effect induced by their movement and bubble generation. Near-infrared (NIR) light is employed to trigger the rupture of the magnetic polydopamine (PDA) outer coating and release the platinum-coated SECs loaded with HRP enzyme. The dual propulsion system combined with the biocompatible nature of the components paves the way for on-site bioremediation of organic pollutants.

Natural pollen extract for photothermal therapy

Yao Yang,Qianwen Zhang,Junwen Zhang,Anqi Chen,Yanxin Chen,Shengyu Li,Mingde Ye,Xuan Xuan,Xiaokun Li,Huacheng He,Jiang Wu

Herein, we discovered that the sunflower sporopollenin exine capsule (SEC) is an effective photothermal agent. In vitro study finds that the spikes on the surface of the sunflower SEC and its structural integrity are the two key factors to determine the photothermal effect. In vivo melanoma mouse model proves that the sunflower SEC can effectively inhibit tumor growth by inducing cell apoptosis and reducing cell proliferation through the near-infra red light triggered photothermal therapy. The in vivo biosafety of the SEC is also validated. In consideration of its safety, uniform size distribution and abundant availability, the sunflower SEC will be a promising photothermal agent candidate for clinical translational application.

Natural sporopollenin cooperated with Cu2O for enhancing fenton-like reaction and insight into its adsorption contributing to the degradation of rhodamine b and methylene blue

Ying Liu,Jiao Jiao,Qing-Yan Gai,Yu-Jie Fu,Yi-Bo Qiu,Yuan Wang

The extensive use of refractory organic dyes in the textile, printing, paper, food, and pharmaceutical industries is a significant source of water pollution. In this study, a novel magnetic hollow porous copper-based Fenton-like catalyst using cattail sporopollenin as a skeleton support (CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O) was developed for the first time for the adsorption and efficient degradation of two refractory organic dyes rhodamine B and methylene blue in aqueous environments. Under the optimal conditions, CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O showed complete ability to degrade the mixed dyes. The degradation kinetic constant of CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O increased by 10.57 times compared to the control Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O. The hollow porous structure of cattail sporopollenin (CSp) in CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O not only adsorbed the dyes, but also promoted the continuous generation of active species by facilitating the redox cycling of Cu 2+ /Cu + through the adsorption of Cu 2+ , which synergistically realized the efficient degradation of mixed dyes. Furthermore, CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O showed promising application potentials as follows: degradation rates of over 96 % for mixed dyes in a wide pH range of 3.0–11.0; complete degradation of mixed dyes in various water matrices including ultrapure water, tap water, and Songhua River water; and degradation rates of over 98 % for mixed dyes after six consecutive cycles. Overall, the novel Fenton-like catalyst CSp/Fe 3 O 4 -Cu 2 O developed in this study was found to be highly promising for the treatment of organic dye-contaminated water in chemical industries. This study also provided new insight into using the excellent adsorption properties of natural sporopollenin for the Fenton-like catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Harnessing the Power of Nature: Monodisperse Pickering Emulsion Droplets and Yolk-Shell Microcapsules Utilizing Bee Pollen Particles

Hang Jiang,Hengxing Yu,Xin Guan,Weijie Jiang,Yunxing Li,Wei Liu,Cheng Yang,Jianzhong Jiang,Bernard P. Binks,To Ngai

The preparation of monodisperse Pickering emulsions currently can only be achieved using microfluidics or membrane emulsification, limiting its widespread applications in many fields. Here, by simply introducing naturally occurring pollen grains during mechanical emulsification, it becomes extremely feasible to fabricate uniform Pickering emulsions. The process of shearing and turbulence leads to a constant reduction in the size of the droplets of the dispersed phase. The robust exine of the pollen grains in the continuous phase enables them to retain their structural integrity during emulsification, resulting in the formation of a single pollen-in-water-in-oil structure. Meanwhile, the intrinsic monodispersity of the pollen grains allows for the resulting emulsions to be similarly uniform, and they can be easily collected through centrifugation. As a result, this novel methodology achieves the effective formulation of monodisperse Pickering emulsions in an unprecedented way. Furthermore, the utilization of sporopollenin exine capsules (SECs) as a replacement for pollen, in conjunction with sol–gel interfacial engineering, enables the attainment of “yolk-shell” dual-shell microcapsules. This approach not only effectively addresses the issue of cargo leakage in SECs but also imparts exceptional uniformity and stability to the microcapsules.

Sporopollenin-chitosan microspheres loaded with an endophytic fungus Talaromyces neorugulosus R-209 for promoting development and controlling root rot in pigeon pea

Jin-Xian Fu,Jiao Jiao,Qing-Yan Gai,Yu-Jie Fu,Mo-Nan Wen,Xiao-Qing Wang,Jing He

Plant-beneficial microbes can be effective as biological agents for promoting development and controlling diseases in plants. However, direct inoculation of non-encapsulated plant-beneficial microbes into the soils can affect their vitality and efficacy. A novel bio-based encapsulant, sporopollenin-chitosan microspheres (SCMs), was developed to load an endophytic fungus Talaromyces neorugulosus R-209 with antagonistic activities against the root rot pathogen ( Rhizoctonia solani AG4) and plant growth-promoting functions. The results showed that T. neorugulosus R-209 encapsulated in SCMs ( Tn R-209−SCMs) could significantly enhance fungal spore germination rates and available nitrogen/phosphorus levels in the soil compared to the non-encapsulated fungus. In addition, the preliminary evidence suggests that Tn R-209−SCMs have a basic safety profile for practical applications. Inoculation with Tn R-209−SCMs could effectively promote development and enhance resistance in pigeon pea seedlings by promoting chlorophyll synthesis, improving photosynthesis, and enhancing phenolic compound accumulation. Meanwhile, T. neorugulosus R-209 was found to endogenously colonize root intercellular spaces. Moreover, co-inoculation of Tn R-209−SCMs and R. solani AG4 could reduce host defense responses compared to R. solani AG4-infected roots, as reflected by lower levels of phenolic compound accumulation and pathogenesis-/biosynthesis-related gene expression. Overall, Tn R-209−SCMs is a promising biological agent that can promote development and control root rot in plants, which also provides an innovative approach to biomaterial-supported agricultural practices.

Microalgal sporopollenin from Chlorella vulgaris cultivated using coal power plant CO2

Jirong Long,Wenguang Zhou,Jing Cao,Yuxuan Mao,Peilun Xu,Jin Liu,Yanghong Yao,Chenguang Wang,Yong Liu

Sporopollenin is a chemically robust biopolymer known for its resistance to environmental degradation and diverse functional potential. This study pioneers the successful extraction of sporopollenin from Chlorella vulgaris cultured in coal-fired flue gas using an innovative alkali-acid two-stage protocol. Multiscale characterization revealed that, despite its irregular morphology, microalgal sporopollenin shares high structural similarity with pollen-derived counterparts. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis confirmed similar functional groups and elemental profiles. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry identified fatty acids as the major structural units, while solid-state 13 C SSNMR spectroscopy revealed a hybrid architecture comprising aliphatic, aromatic, and heterocyclic components. These findings provide molecular insight into the evolutionary continuity of sporopollenin and highlight a scalable, green approach for transforming industrial emissions into high-value biomaterials.
