Fatty acids from cooking fumes and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) released from indoor cleaning adversely affect respiratory health, but the molecular-level mechanism remains unclear. Here, the effect of cooking oil fumes [palmitic acid (PA), oleic acid (OA), and linoleic acid (LA)] on lung model phospholipid (POPG) hydrochlorination mediated by HOCl at the air–water interface of the hanged droplets was investigated. Interfacial hydrochlorination of POPG was impeded by OA and LA, while that of POPG was facilitated by PA. The effect on POPG hydrochlorination increased with the decrease in oil fume concentration. A potential mechanism with respect to the chain length of these oil fumes, regardless of their saturation, was proposed. PA with a short carbon chain looses the POPG packing and leads to the exposure of the C=C double bonds of POPG, whereas OA and LA with a long carbon chain hinder HOCl from reaching the C=C bonds of POPG. These results for short chain and low concentration dependence suggest that the decay of oil fumes or the conversion of short-chain species by indoor interfacial chemistry might be adverse to lung health. These results provide insights into the relationship between indoor multicomponent pollutants and the respiratory system.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are potentially persistent, bioaccumulating, and toxic substances. However, limited data are available on the occurrence of LCMs in indoor and outdoor air particle matter (PM 10 ) in residential areas. Herein, residential areas near an e-waste dismantling center (Guiyu Town, Shantou City), as well as areas away from the e-waste site (Jiedong District, Jieyang City) were selected as the sampling areas. PM 10 was collected from the indoor environments of Guiyu (IGY) and Jieyang (IJY), as well as those from the outdoor environments (OGY and OJY) using the high-volume air samplers (TH-10000C). The levels of 57 LCMs in PM 10 were analyzed, and the highest concentrations of LCMs were found in IGY (0.970–1080 pg/m 3 ), followed by IJY (2.853–455 pg/m 3 ), OGY (0.544–116 pg/m 3 ) and OJY (0.258–35.8 pg/m 3 ). No significant difference was observed for LCM levels in indoor PM 10 between the two areas ( p > 0.05), which were significantly higher than those in outdoors ( p < 0.05), indicating that the release of electronic products in general indoor environments is a source of LCMs that cannot be ignored. The compositions of LCMs in outdoors were not consistent with those of indoors. The correlation analysis of individual LCMs suggested potential different sources to the LCMs in indoor and outdoor environments. The median daily intake values of Σ 46 LCMs via inhalation were estimated as 0.440, 1.46 × 10 −2 , 0.170 and 1.19 × 10 −2 ng/kg BW/day for adults, and as 2.27, 2.60 × 10 −2 , 0.880 and 2.10 × 10 −2 ng/kg BW/day for toddlers, respectively, indicating much higher exposure doses of LCMs indoors compared with the outdoors, and much higher doses for toddlers compared with adults ( p < 0.05). These results reveal the potentially adverse effects of LCMs on vulnerable populations, such as toddlers, in indoor environments.

Building materials with the dual function of temperature and humidity regulation can improve people's living comfort and reduce energy consumption. In this work, a simple and convenient strategy for building a comfortable indoor temperature and humidity environment was proposed. The phase change humidity control material (PCHCM) was prepared by the mixing of form-stable composite phase change material (CPCM) as temperature-control component and hygroscopic MIL-100(Fe) as humidity-control component. In PCHCM, the CPCM was obtained by molten recombination of myristic acid, tetradecanol, and capric acid (MA-TD-CA) as phase change material and hydrophilic fumed silica (SiO 2 ) as porous carrier, and MIL-100(Fe) was synthesized by low-temperature solution method. Thermal analysis indicated that, under the optimized mass ratio of 28.8%MA-61.2%TD-10%CA, the CPCM containing 30 % SiO 2 could effectively prevent the leakage of ternary eutectic , with a suitable phase change temperature and enthalpy (21.74 °C, 96.70 J·g −1 ). The thermal and wet performance evaluation confirmed that the PCHCMs containing 40–50 % CPCM had human body comfortable phase change temperature (26.96–27.26 °C) and high saturation adsorption capacity (0.179–0.205 g/g) at 60 % RH as well as outstanding thermal and wet cycle reliability, indicating the novel MA-TD-CA/SiO 2 /MIL-100(Fe) PCHCM has broad application potential in room temperature and humidity control and building energy conservation .

In this study, multi-morphological g-C 3 N 4 / Fe 2 O 3 were prepared via hydrothermal supramolecular preorganization for the removal of formaldehyde in simulated indoor environments . We synthesized bulk, spherical and tubular g-C 3 N 4 under hydrothermal conditions and subsequently attached Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles by impregnation method. Tubular g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 2 O 3 (27.46 m 2 /g) and spherical g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 2 O 3 (33.50 m 2 /g) synthesized through hydrothermal supramolecular preorganization method possessed the higher specific surface area than bulk g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 2 O 3 (11.05 m 2 /g). Among three morphologies of g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 2 O 3 , tubular g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 2 O 3 exhibited the best performance (65%) than bulk (41%) and spherical (59%) and possessed favorable stability. In addition, we explored and optimized the effects of different indoor simulation conditions (formaldehyde concentration, relative humidity, light source power) on the photocatalytic removal of formaldehyde. The mechanism was proposed that g-C 3 N 4 /Fe 2 O 3 formed Z-type heterojunction to promote the separation of photo-generated electrons and holes, further generating hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical to oxidize formaldehyde.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are a class of emerging organic pollutants widely used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) of various electronic products. LCMs can easily be released from LCDs into indoor environments and may pose potential environmental and health risks. Meanwhile, LCMs exhibit a wide range of saturation vapor pressures (PL) and octanol-air partition coefficients (Koa), which enable their presence in various indoor metrices. However, current research on LCMs within indoor multi-medium contexts remains limited. The development of effective analytical methods could significantly advance related research endeavors. This study developed a method using ultrasonic extraction to extract 70 LCMs from dust, gas, and particle samples, and analyzed them using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-TOF MS). The recoveries of 70 LCMs in dust, gas and particle phases ranged from 77.7 % to 116 %, 73.8 %–127 %, and 62.1 %–147 %, respectively. The instrument's detection limits and quantification limits were 0.01–1.10 ng/mL and 0.04–3.67 ng/mL, respectively. This demonstrated that the method exhibited satisfactory accuracy and sensitivity, and was further applied to analyze 70 LCMs in indoor dust, gas, and particle phases. 52 LCMs were detected in all three matrices, with significant differences in the distribution of these LCMs across the multi-medium. This method is suitable for determining LCMs concentrations in dust, gas, and particle phases, facilitating a more comprehensive analysis of the occurrence levels of indoor LCMs, and providing a technical reference for future studies on the partitioning behavior and risk assessment of LCMs in indoor multi-medium environments, thereby enhancing our understanding of their environmental impact.

Carcinogenic nitrosamines have been widely studied due to their risk to human health. However, the universality and evolutionary processes of their generation, particularly concerning their secondary sources, remain unclear at present. We demonstrated through laboratory flow tube experiments that corresponding nitrosamines were generated from heterogeneous reactions of nitrous acid (HONO) with five structurally diverse amines commonly found indoors, including diphenylamine (DPhA), dibenzylamine (DBzA), dioctylamine (DOtA), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), and N-phenyl-1-naphthylamine (PANA). The heterogeneous reaction rate constants of DBzA and DOtA with HONO (∼70 ppb) were 1.21 × 10–3 and 2.13 × 10–3 min–1 at 30% relative humidity (RH), resulting in a lifetime of 13.8 and 7.8 h. As compared to higher RH (∼80%), more nitrosamines were produced from the reaction of HONO with surface-sorbed DBzA, DOtA, 6PPD, and PANA at lower RH (30%), with product yields ranging from <0.1% to 0.5%. Furthermore, we observed the formation of nitroso-6PPDs and nitro-6PPDs during room air exposure of 6PPD in a genuine indoor environment, in addition to various other transformation products indicative of reactions of 6PPD with HONO, NOx, and ozone indoors. This study confirmed the universality of the heterogeneous reaction of surface-sorbed amine with HONO as a source of nitrosamines indoors.

Novel heat-storage composite coatings containing microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) are prepared to enhance the thermal energy storage of the inner walls of an indoor environment. MPCMs with n-octadecane as core and polyurea as shell are synthesized via interface polymerization. They, along with the coatings, are characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), SEM, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The SEM results show that MPCM can maintain its original morphology and be dispersed uniformly in the coatings with 30 wt% MPCM loads. Moreover, the latent heat capacity of MPCM and the heat-storage coatings are 151.89 J/g and 45.5 J/g, respectively. Other properties, such as thermal stability, temperature time lag, and film-forming are also tested, and the test results indicate excellent performances. After 200 heating-cooling cycles, MPCM and the heat-storage coatings still exhibit good thermal stability. Two reduced-scale test chambers enveloped by wall boards painted with and without MPCM coatings are tested under the same conditions and compared. Overall, the chamber with MPCM coatings can keep a stable temperature of 26-28 °C for approximately 77 min when the heating load is 80 W/m 2 . However, the chamber without PCM coating can only maintain such temperature for 13 min. Thus, the heat-storage coatings can improve the thermal comfort of indoor environments and have a high potential application in building thermal energy storage, especially for old buildings retrofit.
