Two-component modified polyurethane sealant for insulating glass: Design, preparation, and application

Wan Li,Xingjiang Liu,Jinbi Wu,Linzhi Wu,Ailing Sun,Liuhe Wei

A new two-component modified polyurethane (PU) sealant was designed and synthesized for insulating glass. This sealant was designed based on a crosslinked reaction between a p -chlorophenol-blocked PU pre-polymer (Pre-polymer 2 ) in Component A and a poly-functional hyperbranched polyamine polymer (polyamide resin 300 # ) in Component B. During the synthesis of Pre-polymer 2 , Fourier transform infrared spectral analysis was used to track the process, and the optimal reaction time and temperature were 1.5 h and 80 °C, in the presence of 4, 4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). Different curing agents also used as deblocking agents were screened and it was found that polyamide resin 300 # was a good candidate for the curing reaction. In addition, the low-temperature curing rate was also improved by using dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) and organobentonite together as a composite catalyst. Finally, the prepared two-component modified PU sealant for insulating glass was successfully used in an assembly line with good performance. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A strategy for synthesis of silane terminated polyether triggered by click reaction and its application in preparation of modified silane sealants

Li Yinhe,Guo Zhiqiang,Ma Shunfa,Tian Rumeng,Liu Xingjiang,Wei Liuhe

A new hydroxy-silane coupling agent was synthesized from 3-butene-1-alcohol and mercaptopropyl-3-methoxysilane based on a click reaction between double bonds and sulfhydryl groups and was successfully used in the synthesis of silane-modified polyether (STPE). The effect of molecular weight of polypropylene glycol (PPG) on the properties of silane-modified polyether was studied. It was found that with the increase in PPG molecular weight, the initial thermal decomposition temperature and hardness of STPE elastomers decreased, but the molecular structure hardly changed. In addition, with the increase in molecular weight, the elongation at break of the elastomer will gradually increase, but the tensile strength of the elastomer does not change much. When the molecular weight reaches 20 000 g/mol, the resin with a viscosity of 1.6 × 10 5 mPa s can be obtained, and the elongation at break of the cured elastomer reaches 383.4% and the tensile strength is 0.25 MPa. After the STPE resin was prepared into a silane modified sealant, the tensile strength reached 1.31 MPa and the elongation at break reached 406.2%, which had the best mechanical properties among the prepared sealants. This shows that the sealant prepared from high molecular weight resin has stronger mechanical properties, which provides a new idea for the preparation of sealants.

Preparation of high-performance one-component polysulfide adhesives and modification by silane side chains

Xu Han,Le Chang,Zeqian Wang,Feng Liu

One-component polysulfide adhesive preparation by diisocyanate-terminated prepolymers and 1,4-butanedithiol (BSO) can provide convenient moisture curing and excellent mechanical properties, but the formation of polysulfide-urea (–NHCOS–) groups causes some reduction in solvent resistance limiting their further application in aircraft fuel tank sealing. Introducing silane side chains into polysulfide adhesive systems is a viable approach to improving the solvent resistance. In this work, a series of novel silane side chain-modified one-component polysulfide adhesives were synthesized by using chain extenders in different proportions of BSO and (3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS). The results showed that a moderate amount of silane side chains and restricting the formation of Si–O–Si crosslinked networks can effectively enhance the elongation, interfacial interaction and solvent resistance. The optimal overall performance was obtained when the mass ratio of BSO and AEAPTMS was 7 : 1 (Si-OCPS3). Conversely, the oil and water absorption content after 21 days of Si-OCPS3 were 2.21 ± 0.06% and 2.81 ± 0.31%, being 20.50% and 43.57% lower than before modification (Si-OCPS0), respectively. Moreover, Si-OCPS3 exhibited higher tensile strength of 17.34 ± 0.66 MPa (oil) and 15.67 ± 0.32 MPa (water) than Si-OCPS0. We believe our paradigm can provide a feasible approach for designing high-performance one-component polysulfide adhesives.

Self-Healable and Reprocessable Polysulfide Sealants Prepared from Liquid Polysulfide Oligomer and Epoxy Resin

Wentong Gao,Mengyao Bie,Fu Liu,Pengshan Chang,Yiwu Quan

Polysulfide sealants have been commercially applied in many industrial fields. In this article, we study the self-healing property of the epoxy resin-cured polysulfide sealants for the first time. The obtained sealants showed a flexible range of ultimate elongation of 157–478% and a tensile strength of 1.02–0.75 MPa corresponding to different polysulfide oligomers. By taking advantage of the dynamic reversible exchange of disulfide bonds, polysulfide sealants exhibited good self-healing ability under a moderate thermal stimulus. A higher molecular weight and a lower degree of cross-linking of polysulfide oligomer were helpful in improving the ultimate elongation and healing efficiency of the polysulfide sealants. After subjecting to a temperature of 75 °C for 60 min, both the tensile strength and ultimate elongation of a fully cut sample, LP55-F, were restored to 91% of the original values, without affecting the sealing property. Furthermore, the sample exhibited excellent reshaping and reprocessing abilities. These outcomes offer a paradigm toward sustainable industrial applications of the polysulfide-based sealants.

Molecular Engineering Super-Robust Dry/Wet Adhesive with Strong Interface Bonding and Excellent Mechanical Tolerance

Luyao Gao,Shuanhong Ma,Luyao Bao,Xiaoduo Zhao,Yangyang Xiang,Zhizhi Zhang,Yanfei Ma,Zhengfeng Ma,Yong-min Liang,Feng Zhou

Despite the fact that synthetic adhesives have achieved great progress, achieving robust dry/wet adhesion under harsh operating environments is still challenging. Herein, inspired from the extraordinary adhesion mechanism of nature mussel protein adhesive, the balanced design concept of co-adhesion and interfacial adhesion is proposed to prepare one kind of novel copolymer adhesive of [poly(dopamine methacrylamide-co-methoxethyl acrylate-co-adamantane-1-carboxylic acid 2-(2-methyl-acryloyloxy)-ethyl ester)] [p(DMA-co-MEA-co-AD)], named as super-robust adhesive (SRAD). The SRAD exhibits ultra-high interface bonding strengths in air (∼7.66 MPa) and underwater (∼2.78 MPa) against an iron substrate. Especially, a greatly tough and stable adhesion strength (∼2.11 MPa) can be achieved after immersing the bonded sample in water for half a year. Furthermore, the SRAD demonstrates surprising wet bonding robustness/tolerance even encountering harsh conditions such as fluid shearing, dynamic loading, and cyclic mechanical fretting. The great advantages of SRAD, such as strong interface bonding, stable wet adhesion underwater, and good mechanical tolerance, makes it demonstrate huge application potential in engineering sealants and underwater adhesion.
