Destabilization of the Charge Density Wave and the Absence of Superconductivity in ScV6Sn6 under High Pressures up to 11 GPa

Xiaoxiao Zhang,Jun Hou,Wei Xia,Zhian Xu,Pengtao Yang,Anqi Wang,Ziyi Liu,Jie Shen,Hua Zhang,Xiaoli Dong,Yoshiya Uwatoko,Jianping Sun,Bosen Wang,Yanfeng Guo,Jinguang Cheng

RV6Sn6(R= Sc, Y, or rare earth) is a new family of kagome metals that have a similar vanadium structural motif asAV3Sb5(A= K, Rb, Cs) compounds. UnlikeAV3Sb5, ScV6Sn6is the only compound among the series ofRV6Sn6that displays a charge density wave (CDW) order at ambient pressure, yet it shows no superconductivity (SC) at low temperatures. Here, we perform a high-pressure transport study on the ScV6Sn6single crystal to track the evolutions of the CDW transition and to explore possible SC. In contrast toAV3Sb5compounds, the CDW order of ScV6Sn6can be suppressed completely by a pressure of about 2.4 GPa, but no SC is detected down to 40 mK at 2.35 GPa and 1.5 K up to 11 GPa. Moreover, we observed that the resistivity anomaly around the CDW transition undergoes an obvious change at ~2.04 GPa before it vanishes completely. The present work highlights a distinct relationship between CDW and SC in ScV6Sn6in comparison with the well-studiedAV3Sb5.Keywords:ScV6Sn6;charge density wave;high pressure

Superconductivity under pressure in a chromium-based kagome metal

Liu Yi,Liu Zi-Yi,Bao Jin-Ke,Yang Peng-Tao,Ji Liang-Wen,Wu Si-Qi,Shen Qin-Xin,Luo Jun,Yang Jie,Liu Ji-Yong,Xu Chen-Chao,Yang Wu-Zhang,Chai Wan-Li,Lu Jia-Yi,Liu Chang-Chao,Wang Bo-Sen,Jiang Hao,Tao Qian,Ren Zhi,Xu Xiao-Feng,Cao Chao,Xu Zhu-An,Zhou Rui,Cheng Jin-Guang,Cao Guang-Han

Superconductivity in a highly correlated kagome system has been theoretically proposed for years (refs.  1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ), yet the experimental realization is hard to achieve 6 , 7 . The recently discovered vanadium-based kagome materials 8 , which exhibit both superconductivity 9 , 10 , 11 and charge-density-wave orders 12 , 13 , 14 , are nonmagnetic 8 , 9 and weakly correlated 15 , 16 . Thus these materials are unlikely to host the exotic superconductivity theoretically proposed. Here we report the discovery of a chromium-based kagome metal, CsCr 3 Sb 5 , which is contrastingly featured with strong electron correlations, frustrated magnetism and characteristic flat bands close to the Fermi level. Under ambient pressure, this kagome metal undergoes a concurrent structural and magnetic phase transition at 55 K, with a stripe-like 4 a 0 structural modulation. At high pressure, the phase transition evolves into two transitions, possibly associated with charge-density-wave and antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave orderings. These density-wave-like orders are gradually suppressed with pressure and, remarkably, a superconducting dome emerges at 3.65–8.0 GPa. The maximum of the superconducting transition temperature, T c max  = 6.4 K, appears when the density-wave-like orders are completely suppressed at 4.2 GPa, and the normal state exhibits a non-Fermi-liquid behaviour, reminiscent of unconventional superconductivity and quantum criticality in iron-based superconductors 17 , 18 . Our work offers an unprecedented platform for investigating superconductivity in correlated kagome systems.

Superconductivity in Platinum-Intercalated 2H-TaS₂

Lijia Zhou,Xiangjiang Dong,Qiang Li,Xianran Xing

We systematically investigated the superconducting properties of 2H-PtxTaS2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.08). As the platinum (Pt) content increases, the charge density wave (CDW) in 2H-TaS2, which appears at approximately 75 K, is progressively suppressed and completely disappears in Pt0.06TaS2. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) first increases and then decreases, reaching its maximum value of approximately 4.85 K at x = 0.06. This phenomenon suggests a competitive interplay between CDW and superconductivity (SC) in this system. Further measurements of the superconducting parameters of Pt0.06TaS2 indicate that the enhancement of Tc is primarily attributed to an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level.

Orbital-selective charge-density wave in TaTe4

Xu R. Z.,Du X.,Zhou J. S.,Gu X.,Zhang Q. Q.,Li Y. D.,Zhao W. X.,Zheng F. W.,Arita M.,Shimada K.,Kim T. K.,Cacho C.,Guo Y. F.,Liu Z. K.,Chen Y. L.,Yang L. X.

TaTe 4 , a metallic charge-density wave (CDW) material discovered decades ago, has attracted renewed attention due to its rich interesting properties, such as pressure-induced superconductivity and candidate nontrivial topological phase. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of TaTe 4 . At 26 K, we observe a CDW gap as large as 290 meV, which persists up to 500 K. The CDW-modulated band structure shows a complex reconstruction that closely correlates with the lattice distortion. Inside the CDW gap, there exist highly dispersive energy bands contributing to the remnant Fermi surface and metallic behavior in the CDW state. Interestingly, our ab initio calculation reveals that the large CDW gap mainly opens in the electronic states with out-of-plane orbital components, while the in-gap metallic states originate from in-plane orbitals, suggesting an orbital texture that couples with the CDW order. Our results shed light on the interplay between electron, lattice, and orbital in quasi-one-dimensional CDW materials.

Superconductivity in CuIr 2–x Al x Te4 telluride chalcogenides

Dong Yan,Lingyong Zeng,Yijie Zeng,Yishi Lin,Junjie Yin,Meng Wang,Yihua Wang,Daoxin Yao,Huixia Luo

The relationship between charge-density-wave (CDW) and superconductivity (SC), two vital physical phases in condensed matter physics, has always been the focus of scientists' research over the past decades. Motivated by this research hotspot, we systematically studied the physical properties of the layered telluride chalcogenide superconductors CuIr2−xAlxTe4 (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.2). Through the resistance and magnetization measurements, we found that the CDW order was destroyed by a small amount of Al doping. Meanwhile, the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) kept changing with the change of doping amount and rose towards the maximum value of 2.75 K when x = 0.075. The value of normalized specific heat jump (Δ C/γ Tc) for the highest Tc sample CuIr1.925Al0.075Te4 was 1.53, which was larger than the BCS value of 1.43 and showed the bulk superconducting nature. In order to clearly show the relationship between SC and CDW states, we propose a phase diagram of Tc vs. doping content.

Magnetic field-induced non-linear transport in HfTe5

Zhang Cheng,Yang Jinshan,Yan Zhongbo,Yuan Xiang,Liu Yanwen,Zhao Minhao,Suslov Alexey,Zhang Jinglei,Pi Li,Wang Zhong,Xiu Faxian

The interplay of electron correlations and topological phases gives rise to various exotic phenomena including fractionalization, excitonic instability and axionic excitation. Recently discovered transition-metal pentatellurides can reach the ultra-quantum limit in low magnetic fields and serve as good candidates for achieving such a combination. Here, we report evidence of density wave and metal-insulator transition in HfTe5 induced by intense magnetic fields. Using the non-linear transport technique, we detect a distinct non-linear conduction behavior in the longitudinal resistivity within the a–c plane, corresponding to the formation of a density wave induced by magnetic fields. In high fields, the onset of non-linear conduction in the Hall resistivity indicates an impurity-pinned magnetic freeze-out as the possible origin of the insulating behavior. These frozen electrons can be gradually reactivated into mobile states above a threshold of electric field. This experimental evidence calls for further investigation into the underlying mechanism of the bulk quantum Hall effect and field-induced phase transitions in pentatellurides.

Filling-Dependent Intertwined Electronic and Atomic Orders in the Flat-Band State of 1T-TaS2

Yanyan Geng,Haoyu Dong,Renhong Wang,Jianfeng Guo,Shuo Mi,Le Lei,Yan Li,Li Huang,Fei Pang,Rui Xu,Weiqiang Yu,Hong-Jun Gao,Wei Ji,Weichang Zhou,Zhihai Cheng

The delicate interplay among the complex intra/inter-layer electron–electron and electron–lattice interactions is the fundamental prerequisite of these exotic quantum states, such as superconductivity, nematic order, and checkerboard charge order. Here, we explore the filling-dependent multiple stable intertwined electronic and atomic orders of the flat-band state of 1T-TaS2 encompassing hole order, phase orders, coexisting left- and right-chiral orders, and mixed phase/chiral orders via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Combining first-principles calculations, the emergent electronic/atomic orders can be attributed to the weakening of electron–electron correlations and stacking-dependent interlayer interactions. Moreover, achiral intermediate ring-like clusters and nematic charge density wave (CDW) states are successfully realized in intralayer chiral domain wall and interlayer heterochiral stacking regions through chiral overlap configurations. Our study not only deepens the understanding of filling-dependent electronic/atomic orders in flat-band systems but also offers perspectives for exploring exotic quantum states in correlated electronic systems.
