Triclosan is a widely used biocide against microorganisms and is ubiquitously distributed in the environment. Triclosan can be accumulated into plants from soil and hydroponic media. However, little information is currently available on the comparative fate of triclosan in plants under soil and hydroponics cultivation conditions and factors governing uptake. Therefore, this study was designed to comparatively elucidate the uptake mechanism of 14 C-triclosan in youdonger ( Brassica campestris subsp. Chinensis var. communis ) grown under different soils and hydroponics and clarify dominant uptake factors. Results showed that 77.2% of 14 C were accumulated in youdonger grown in a hydroponic system, while only 1.24%–2.33% were accumulated in the two soil-planting systems. In addition, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of 14 C-triclosan in soil-plant systems was approximately 400-fold smaller than that in the hydroponics. In the soil-planting system, a strong linear correlation was found between concentrations of triclosan in soil pore water and youdonger plant (R 2 > 0.85, p < 0.01) at different incubation times. Therefore, triclosan in pore water might be a good indicator to estimate its accumulation in plants and is significantly affected by soil pH, clay, and organic matter contents. The estimated average dietary intakes of triclosan for youdonger grown in hydroponic and soil-planting systems were estimated to be 1.31 ng day −1 kg −1 and 0.05–0.12 ng day −1 kg −1 , respectively, much lower than the acceptable dietary intakes of triclosan (83 μg day −1 kg −1 ), indicating no significant human health risks from youdonger consumption. This study provided insights into uptake routes of triclosan into youdonger plants from both soil and hydroponic systems, bioavailability of triclosan in different soils, and further assessment of human exposure to triclosan from youdonger.

A new fabrication strategy of the graphene-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber is developed. Graphite oxide was first used as starting coating material that covalently bonded to the fused-silica substrate using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as cross-linking agent and subsequently deoxidized by hydrazine to give the graphene coating in situ. The chemical bonding between graphene and the silica fiber improve its chemical stability, and the obtained fiber was stable enough for more than 150 replicate extraction cycles. The graphene coating was wrinkled and folded, like the morphology of the rough tree bark. Its performance is tested by headspace (HS) SPME of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) followed by GC/MS analysis. The results showed that the graphene-coated fiber exhibited higher enrichment factors (EFs) from 2-fold for naphthalene to 17-fold for B(b)FL as compared to the commercial polydimethylsioxane (PDMS) fiber, and the EFs increased with the number of condensed rings of PAHs. The strong adsorption affinity was believed to be mostly due to the dominant role of π–π stacking interaction and hydrophobic effect, according to the results of selectivity study for a variety of organic compounds including PAHs, the aromatic compounds with different substituent groups, and some aliphatic hydrocarbons. For PAHs analysis, the graphene-coated fiber showed good precision (<11%), low detection limits (1.52–2.72 ng/L), and wide linearity (5–500 ng/L) under the optimized conditions. The repeatability of fiber-to-fiber was 4.0–10.8%. The method was applied to simultaneous analysis of eight PAHs with satisfactory recoveries, which were 84–102% for water samples and 72–95% for soil samples, respectively.

A novel method for the extraction of Sudan dyes including Sudan I, II, III, and IV from environmental water by magnetic titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 ) coated with sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) as adsorbent was reported. Fe 3 O 4 @TiO 2 was synthesized by a simple method and was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, and vibrating sample magnetometer. The magnetic separation was quite efficient for the adsorption and desorption of Sudan dyes. The effect of the amount of SDS, extraction time, pH, desorption condition, maximal extraction volume, and humic acid on the extraction process were investigated. This method was employed to analyze three environmental water samples. The results demonstrated that our proposed method had wide linear range (25–5,000 ng L −1 ) with a good linearity ( R
2 > 0.999) and low detection limits (2.9–7.3 ng L −1 ). An enrichment factor of 1,000 was achieved. In all three spiked levels (25, 250, and 2,500 ng L −1 ), the recoveries of Sudan dyes were in the range of 86.9–93.6 %. The relative standard deviations obtained were ranging from 2.5 to 9.3 %. That is to say, the new method was fast and effective for the extraction of Sudan dye from environmental water.

Covalent organic frameworks with tunable porous crystallinity and outstanding stability have recently exhibited fascinating pretreatment performance as solid-phase microextraction coatings. In this report, a β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic framework (TpPa-1) was successfully constructed through a Schiff-base-type reaction between 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and para-phenylenediamine (Pa-1). A TpPa-1 coating was then fabricated on a stainless-steel fiber for capturing trace synthetic musks. This TpPa-1 coating exhibited strong interaction with synthetic musks because of its hydrophobicity and π–π affinity. This TpPa-1-based solid-phase microextraction methodology, coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, provided high enrichment factors (1214–12 487), wide linearity (0.5–1000 ng L−1), low limits of detection (0.04–0.31 ng L−1), and acceptable reproducibility (relative standard deviation, <10%) for nine synthetic musks. Recoveries at three spiked levels in three types of water samples were between 76.2% and 118.7%. These results indicated the promising applicability of the TpPa-1 as a solid-phase microextraction fiber coating for reliably detecting trace concentrations of synthetic musks in the environment.
