Liquid crystal elastomer-based all-printed actuator and sensing array systems

Ke Zheng,Bin Tian,Panwang Guo,Haoye Zhan,Jing Liang,Youfusheng Wu,Wei Wu

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are valuable in soft actuators, sensors and other emerging fields. However, it is still a huge challenge to build high-performance LCE-based functional devices in a simple and fast way to achieve the orderly and patterned integration of multiple functional layers and LCE. Herein, screen-printing technology is used to realize the multi-layer pattern deposition of silver fractal dendrites conductive ink (with excellent Joule heating effect and strain-sensing function) and carbon black conductive ink (with photothermal conversion ability) on the surface of LCE. A series of LCE-based electronic devices are prepared through customized printing patterns. The as-obtained actuator possesses excellent electric actuating performance (bending angle of 102° at 200 mA) and self-sensing function (maximum relative resistance changes of −55.0%), and also exhibits NIR light-driven self-sensing bending actuation behavior (bending angle of 81° at 1.43 W/cm 2 ), which can be used to control the robotic arm. The as-printed NIR light sensing array system can accurately sense the intensity, spot size and position of NIR light, showing good application potential in the field of unmanned aerial vehicle flight safety. This work provides a new strategy for the efficient preparation of LCEs-based flexible electronics.

Facile and High-Yield Replacement Reaction-Assisted Synthesis of Silver Dendrites by Jet for Conductive Ink

Muhammad Murtaza,Naveed Hussain,Junchen Liu,Hui Wu

Metallic dendrites with uniform morphology, high purity, and large yield remain challenging to synthesize. In this work, single-crystalline silver (Ag) dendrites with uniform morphology, high purity, and large yield are successfully synthesized by employing single replacement reaction between aqueous silver nitrate (AgNO3) and solid copper (Cu) by jet. The combined effect of diffusion-limited aggregation and the locally oriented attachment of Ag particles is responsible for the formation of silver dendrites under nonequilibrium conditions. Finally, the potential applications of as-synthesized silver dendrites are demonstrated by successfully preparing silver-based conductive ink for flexible electronics and wearable equipment. The conductive pattern exhibits resistivity of 7.2 μΩ·cm, showing good conductivity of the prepared conductive material. This facile and time-efficient synthetic route can be extended to synthesize other noble metal nanostructures with desired morphologies by adopting selective precursor salt concentrations and substrate metals with proper redox potentials.

Self-Reducible Cu Nanoparticles for Conductive Inks

Xiaofeng Dai,Wen Xu,Teng Zhang,Tao Wang

Copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) are a potential material for conductive inks because of their low price, high conductivity, and high electromigration resistance. However, Cu NPs are prone to be oxidized in air, which is lethal to conductivity. In this work, we report on the self-reduction of Cu NPs which are synthesized by the thermal decomposition of copper formate (Cuf) using oleylamine (OAM) as the complexing ligand and stabilizing agent. Although the particle surface partially oxidized to Cu2O in air, the cuprous oxide could be reduced to copper during sintering, because of the release of H2 through the decomposition of OAM adsorbed on Cu NPs. This self-reduction ability without the help of additional reduction agent makes the Cu NPs a promising material for conductive inks. The feasibility to formulate conductive ink with the prepared Cu NPs is demonstrated.

Facile preparation of stable reactive silver ink for highly conductive and flexible electrodes

Yun Mou,Hao Cheng,Hao Wang,Qinglei Sun,Jiaxin Liu,Yang Peng,Mingxiang Chen

Stability of conductive ink and mechanical flexibility of conductive pattern are essential for flexible printed electronics. In this work, we reported a stable reactive silver ink for the facile fabrication of flexible electrodes. The ink was mainly composed of silver-isopropanolamine (IPA) complex, formic acid reductant, and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) adhesive agent, and it displayed good chemical stability. The flexible electrodes on polyimide (PI) substrates were achieved by mask-printing and thermal sintering of the ink, and the effects of sintering parameters and HEC adhesive agent content on the electrical and flexible properties and microstructure evolutions of silver layer were systematically investigated. Consequently, the silver layer sintered at 110 °C yields low electrical resistivity of 12.1 μΩ·cm, which is only eight times higher than that of bulk silver. Furthermore, the sintered silver layer still presents excellent flexibility and low relative resistances after the bending, twisting, and folding tests. These results demonstrate that the stable reactive silver ink provides a promising and low cost opportunity for low temperature design and fabrication of high performance flexible printed electronics.

Preparation of low-temperature sintered high conductivity inks based on nanosilver self-assembled on surface of graphene

Liu Piao,He Wen-qiang,Lu An-xian

Finer nanoplates of silver are prepared by self-assembly on the surface of graphene, and the low-temperature sintered high conductivity ink containing the silver nanoplates is prepared. Most importantly, graphene is added to the solution before the chemical reduction reaction occurs. Firstly, it is found that silver nanoplates have self-assembly phenomenon on the surface of graphene. Secondly, the Ag nano hexagonal platelets (AgNHPs) with small particle sizes (10 nm), narrow distribution and good dispersion are prepared. Especially, smaller sizes (10 nm) and narrower particle size distribution of AgNHPs particles can be easily controlled by using this process. Finally, the conductivity of the ink is excellent. For example, when the printed patterns were sintering at 150 °C, the resistivity of the ink(GE: 0.15 g/L) reached the minimum value of 2.2×10 −6 Ω·cm. And the resistivity value was 3.7×10 −6 Qcm, when it was sintered at 100 °C for 30 min. The conductive ink prepared can be used for the field of printing electronics as ink-jet printing ink.

Acidic-Induced Liquid Metal–Montmorillonite Self-Sintering Conductive Ink with Multilayer Sandwiched Structure for Flexible Printed Electronics

Zhice Song,Jiao Ma,Rong Fang,Jie Liu,Hua Wang

By virtue of a high conductivity comparable to rigid metals while possessing special deformability like liquid, liquid metal (LM) has presented a huge potential application in the field of flexible printed electronics. However, the typical core–shell structure for the LM ink, which aims to facilitate the stable dispersion of liquid metal nanoparticles (LMNPs), would impede their spontaneous connectivity and require extra techniques to externally rupture the organic shell layer, thus limiting the standardization for the LM ink application. Herein, we instead report an LM-based self-sintering conductive ink relying on inorganic montmorillonite (MMT) acting as an intercalated nanocomposite. In detail, we found that in the ethanol/water mixtures, hydrochloric acid (HCl) in combination with ultrasonication could induce the dissolution of the oxide shell of LMNPs and meanwhile achieve the exfoliation of MMT, subsequently self-assembling into a nanointercalated composite of LM-MMT due to the strong electrostatic interaction. When subjected to elevated temperature during curing, the MMT nanosheet would undergo a horizontally orientated stack and squeeze the LMNPs with the evaporation of the solvent, thus inducing their deformation, aggregation, and further connectivity, and finally, a conductive coating with a multilayered sandwich structure is formed. The optimized coating possessed an initially high electrical conductivity of up to 1.2 × 105 S m–1 and exhibited a unique anisotropic mechanical-electrical response, i.e., good resistance to shear deformation and sensitive response to tensile deformation. Moreover, the ink has good flowability and processability, allowing its availability on various flexible substrates with high-temperature resistance and long-term stability. Finally, LED array circuits, photosensitive circuits, and motion strain sensors were respectively fabricated on different flexible substrates as a proof of concept for the ink’s processability, electrical integration capability, and future application potential.

Facile and scalable fabrication of self-assembled Cu architecture with superior antioxidative properties and improved sinterability as a conductive ink for flexible electronics

Xinyan Hu,Gang Li,Pengli Zhu,Jiaoning Tang,Rong Sun,Ching-Ping Wong

The inherent susceptibility to oxidation and poor sinterability significantly limit the practical application of Cu-based conductive inks. Most methodologies employed for the inks like organic polymer coatings and inorganic metal deposition are generally ineffective. Herein, we report the design of a novel hierarchical Cu architecture to simultaneously improve the antioxidative and sinterability via a self-passivation mechanism and loose interior structures. The hierarchical Cu architecture was prepared using copper hydroxide, L-ascorbic acid, and polyvinylpyrrolidone in aqueous solution; 40 g Cu were prepared in a scale-up experiment. A possible growth mechanism is proposed, involving the Cu2O-templated and mediated nucleation and growth of Cu nanocrystals, followed by the PVP-directed electrostatic self-assembly of Cu nanocrystals. The synthesized Cu shows high oxidation resistance after stored in ambient environment for 90 d by self-passivation, wherein the dense oxidized external layer prevented further oxidation of Cu, unlike other antioxidative strategies. In addition, the structure became 2D flake after a simple ball-milling for 10 min of 2000r, thus forming a good conductive network at the temperature of 180 °C. Importantly, no obvious decline in the electrical performance after severe surface oxidation. Although the structure cannot offer excellent conductive performance, but it proposes a new solution for the balance of antioxidative capabilities and good sinterability in Cu nanomaterials, thus facilitating greater utilization of Cu-based conductive inks for emerging flexible electronic applications.

Controllable Surface-Grafted MXene Inks for Electromagnetic Wave Modulation and Infrared Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Zhiming Deng,Lulu Li,Pingping Tang,Chenyang Jiao,Zhong-Zhen Yu,Chong Min Koo,Hao-Bin Zhang

Two-dimensional transition metal carbide/nitride (MXene) conductive inks are promising for scalable production of printable electronics, electromagnetic devices, and multifunctional coatings. However, the susceptible oxidation and poor rheological property seriously impede the printability of MXene inks and the exploration of functional devices. Here, we proposed a controllable surface grafting strategy for MXene flakes (p-MXene) with prepolymerized polydopamine macromolecules to protect against water and oxygen, enrich surface chemistry, and significantly optimize the rheological properties of the inks. The obtained p-MXene inks can adapt to screen-printing and other high-viscosity processing techniques, facilitating the development of patterned electromagnetic films and coatings. Interestingly, the printed MXene polarizer can freely switch and quantitatively control microwave transmission, giving an inspiring means for smart microwave modulation beyond the commonly reported shielding function. Moreover, the introduction of polydopamine nanoshell enables the infrared emissivity of MXene coating to be adjusted to a large extent, which can produce infrared anti-counterfeiting patterns in a thermal imager. Therefore, multifunctional antioxidant p-MXene inks will greatly extend the potential applications for the next-generation printable electronics and devices.

Facile Preparation of Monodisperse Cu@Ag Core–Shell Nanoparticles for Conductive Ink in Printing Electronics

Gang Li,Xuecheng Yu,Ruoyu Zhang,Qionglin Ouyang,Rong Sun,Liqiang Cao,Pengli Zhu

Copper-based nanoinks are emerging as promising low-cost alternatives to widely used silver nanoinks in electronic printing. However, the spontaneous oxidation of copper under ambient conditions poses significant challenges to its broader application. To address this issue, this paper presents an economical, large-scale, and environmentally friendly method for fabricating Cu@Ag nanoparticles (Cu@Ag NPs). The as-prepared nanoparticles exhibit a narrow size distribution of approximately 100 nm and can withstand ambient exposure for at least 60 days without significant oxidation. The Cu@Ag-based ink, with a 60 wt% loading, was screen-printed onto a flexible polyimide substrate and subsequently heat-treated at 290 °C for 15 minutes under a nitrogen atmosphere. The sintered pattern displayed a low electrical resistivity of 25.5 μΩ·cm (approximately 15 times the resistivity of bulk copper) along with excellent reliability and mechanical fatigue strength. The innovative Cu@Ag NPs fabrication method holds considerable potential for advancing large-scale applications of copper-based inks in flexible electronics. Keywords:core–shell nanoparticles;antioxidation;conductive ink;printing electronics

Stretchable, flexible, transparent PEDOT:PSS electrodes by doping strategy

Xianchun Chen,Junjie Liu,Haoran Zhu,Longzhen Qiu,Xiaohong Wang

Flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) have been widely used in the field of flexible optoelectronic devices due to their simultaneous conductivity and optical transmittance. However, traditional fabrication methods often struggle to achieve an optimal balance between high conductivity and flexibility, and may also involve high costs and complex processes. Consequently, developing a cost-effective strategy for the large-scale production of high-performance FTEs is crucial. Here, high-performance poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) spray-coated FTEs were prepared by optimizing the PEDOT:PSS conductive ink formulation through doping strategies. The PEDOT:PSS FTEs exhibit a surface resistance of 70 Ω/sq and a transmittance of 80 % at 550 nm. Notably, their optoelectronic properties remain stable after 100 bends, continuous illumination at 2.43 mW/cm 2 , and exposure to 90 % relative humidity. In addition, large-scale FTEs (15 × 15 cm) were successfully produced using the spray-coating method and effectively implemented in flexible touch screens. These results show that optimized conductive ink formulations have great potential for the preparation of low-cost, large-area and uniform FTEs.

Profile improvement of blade coated circuits by the capillary force originating from the hydrophobic sidewalls

Cheng Tang,Rui Liu,Shanyou Zhu,Subin Jiang,Ke Shui,Jian Lin,Chang-Qi Ma

Restricting the diffusion of conductive inks plays a key role in printed electronics application. Micro-channels with different sidewall surface energies, which can be approximated as a capillary, are fabricated to restrict the blade-coated ink diffusion using both of the gravitational effect and the capillary force. The coffee ring effect of aqueous silver ink is inhibited by the capillary force when the hydrophobic sidewalls distance is no more than 50 μm in this paper. As a result, the conductive lines with improved cross-sectional profiles are obtained by this method, with the typical resistivity more than 108 times lower than the measured results with hydrophilic sidewalls. The capillary force was also found to lose its effect when the width is larger enough, which needs surfactant addition to improve the silver film property. I–V curves of the original aqueous ink and the ink improved by traditional methods shows that the profile improvement by the hydrophobic sidewall can be used with other ink improving methods cooperatively. These studies open up the possibility of improving the printed conductive patterns by this method as an auxiliary tool used together with the traditional methods reported before.

Liquid Metal Particles Decorated by Poly(imidazole-urea) as Versatile Adhesive and Recyclable Inks for Substrate-Irrelevant Direct Writing

Jingjing Chen,Shuqiang Xiong,Na Li,Junrong Yu,Yan Wang,Zuming Hu

Liquid metals (LMs) with fluidity and conductivity are widely applied in flexible electronics. However, the surface patterning of liquid metals (LMs) is restricted by the low adhesion effect on the substrates because of the intrinsic high surface tension. In this study, a versatile adhesive conductive poly(imidazole-urea)/eutectic Ga75.5In24.5 alloy (PIU/EGaIn) ink is proposed by wrapping the EGaIn particles with PIU through metal coordination to realize substrate-independent direct writing. The adhesion of PIU guarantees that the PIU/EGaIn ink can be written smoothly on different substrates, ranging from flexible to rigid and plane to camber. Complex patterns can also be stamped on the substrate by transfer printing. The maximum conductivity of the handwriting trace can reach as high as 1.3 × 106 S/m due to the highly efficient stability of EGaIn particles with a low content of residue PIU. The written circuit demonstrates high stability and maintains constant conductivity after 500 cycles of deformations (folding, bending, and stretching), thanks to the good adhesion effect of PIU with substrates. In addition, the resistance touch sensor was patterned to detect finger contact as a demonstration of potential application. The PIU/EGaIn ink waste can be recycled using an alkaline solution owing to the intrinsic degradability of PIU. This strategy offers a new choice for universal adhesive conductive ink that is suitable for environmentally friendly flexible electronics.
