The practical application of yarn electrode materials has been restricted because of the inherent insulating properties and adverse electrochemical properties of conventional yarns. The aim of the study was to make yarn electrodes with higher specific capacitance and construct a type of yarn-like manganese dioxide (MnO2) electrode. In this work, polyacrylonitrile-wrapped carbon fibers (CFs) core-spun yarn (CFP core spun yarn) was prepared by electrospinning with CF yarn as the base material. The highly conductive yarn (CFPP yarn) was then prepared by depositing polypyrrole nanoparticles by in situ polymerization on top of the CFP cored yarn. Finally, based on CFPP yarn, the CFPP@MnO2 yarn cathode material was prepared by coating MnO2 on CFPP yarn by an impregnation coating method. The CFPP@MnO2 yarn cathode showed outstanding electrochemical performance in the three-electrode system test, maintaining 89.76% of the initial capacity after 100 charge–discharge cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm–1, which indicates that the CFPP@MnO2 yarn cathode has outstanding cycling stability. The yarn cell can therefore be used as the cathode electrode for yarn batteries, providing an effective strategy for applications in smart textiles and wearable electronics.

Stretchable electrical conductors hold great promise in the wearable electronic devices, such as flexible display and human-machine interface. Stable conductivity is vital for wearable devices to maintain their stable performance. However, the electrical resistance of most reported yarns dramatically increases when they are deformed. Herein, we propose a design for a coaxial-helix structure by wrapping the polyaniline/MXene-based elastic core-spun yarn on itself in the form of coils. The fabricated coaxial-helix structured yarns (DCSs) exhibit excellent strain-insensitive properties, including low relative resistance change (25.4%), large strain (200%) and high quality factor (17.95). Moreover, the DCSs can be used as the stretchable electrodes for the supercapacitors , and delivers a linear specific capacitance of 256.7 mF cm −1 , which is higher than most stretchable yarns. Therefore, the proposed coaxial-helix structure design creates a new approach for the strain-insensitive stretchable conductor, thereby paving the way for the development of stretchy electronics.

Although the coating of conductive graphene onto commercial yarns is promising for scalable production, the resulting conductive yarns are susceptible to the coating detachment, causing reduced conductivity and poor stability. Herein, we propose a scalable and cost-effective interfacial enhancement strategy for fabricating highly conductive yarns with satisfactory mechanical properties by modifying polyamide yarns with polyethyleneimine to enhance their interaction with graphene oxide (GO) sheets and subsequently reducing the GO component with hydroiodic acid. Because the enhanced interfacial interactions of the polyethyleneimine-modified polyamide yarns with the GO sheets improve the loading of GO and the coating stability, the resultant yarns can withstand bending, embroidering, sewing and weaving, maintaining an extraordinary conductivity of 4.7 × 10 3 S m −1 after 10000-cycle bending. The conductive textiles woven by the yarns reach an excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of 66.7 dB at the thickness of 0.615 mm along with superior hydrophobicity, satisfactory air permeability, and high electrothermal and solar-thermal energy conversion performances. The EMI shielding effectiveness of the textile is well maintained even after 5000-cycle bending, demonstrating its satisfactory stability. This work demonstrates an interfacial enhancement strategy for the large-scale fabrication of multifunctional yarns that hold great promise for EMI shielding, personal thermal regulation, and deicing applications.

Simultaneously achieving high mechanical elasticity and electrical conductivity is essentially required for wearable electronics and smart fabrics. However, great challenges still remain to achieve high electrical conductance under large mechanical deformations due to the “trade-off” effect between them. Herein, inspired by curling structure of climbing plants, hierarchically interlocked helical conductive yarn for ultra-stretchable electronics and smart fabrics was developed, via over-twisting silver nanowires (AgNWs)/MXene multi-dimensional synergistic conductive networks that hierarchically entangled with elastic thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) nanofiber networks. High-aspect-ratio 1D AgNWs bridged 2D MXene nanosheets into synergistic interconnected conductive network while interlocked with elastic 3D TPU nanofiber skeleton. Unique hierarchically interlocking effect between highly conductive networks and highly elastic nanofiber networks during the twisting process induced helical conductive yarn simultaneously exhibits excellent mechanical stretchability and electrical conductivity. Excellent intrinsic elasticity of TPU macromolecular chains coupled with its hierarchically helical structure enables the conductive yarn exhibits excellent mechanical stretchability. While the hierarchically interlocked conductive structure ensures the stretchable yarn possess high electrical conductivity which could resist large mechanical deformations during stretching process. The hierarchically interlocked helical conductive yarn could still exhibit high electrical conductivity (1.12 × 10 5 S/m) even under large mechanical deformations (300%), which effectively avoid the “trade-off” effect. Moreover, the ultra-stretchable conductive yarn exhibits smart responsiveness to multi stimuli (mechanical/electron/light). The helical strain sensor has excellent electromechanical performance with stable GF (1.7) in the 600%–1000% linear range. The hierarchically interlocked helical conductive yarn holds great promise for ultra-stretchable electronics and smart fabrics.

Yarn-based flexible strain sensors with advantages in wearability and integrability have attracted wide attention. However, it is still a big challenge to achieve yarn-based strain sensors with a wide linear strain range, low hysteresis, and durability synchronously that can be used for full range detection of human body motions. Herein, a new structure, double-threaded conductive yarn with rhythmic strain distribution, is reported to markedly widen the linear strain range of microcrack-based stretchable strain sensors. A new method of winding and thermally adhering hot-melt filaments on the surface of the elastic fiber is used to achieve double-threaded yarn (DTY) with rhythmic strain distribution. The proposed strategy, the integration of heterogeneous materials, is reported to significantly reduce the mechanical hysteresis of composite yarns. Rhythmic strain distribution of the DTY during stretching causes multi-level microcracks in different regions of the carbon nanotube (CNT) conductive layer deposited on the surface of the DTY. Besides, the sensing performance of DTY-based strain sensor can be adjusted by designing the structural parameters. The final prepared flexible strain sensor has the advantages of a wide linear strain range (100%), great sensitivity (GF = 12.43), low hysteresis, rapid response (158 ms), high repeatability (> 2000 cycles at 50% strain), and hydrophobicity, etc. The sensor can monitor human motion repeatedly and stably well, and shows great advantages in flexible wearable devices.

Wearable electronic textiles, capable of detecting human motions and recognizing gestures, represent the forefront of personalized electronics. However, the integration of high stretchability, sensitivity, durability, and self-healable/self-bondable capabilities into one platform remains challenging. Herein, mussel-inspired stretchable, sensitive, and self-healable/self-bonded conductive yarns enabled by dual electron transfer pathways and dual encapsulation technology are presented. Specifically, covered spandex yarns provide the necessary stretchability and adsorption capacity, while supramolecular polydopamine layer affords enhanced interfacial interactions. Reduced graphene oxide nanosheets and silver nanoparticle-based sensing layers offer dual electron transfer pathways. Dual encapsulations with self-healable/self-bondable ability not only mitigate the crack propagation but also protect inner conductive materials from detachment. Benefiting from these rational designs, the composite yarns exhibit a large sensing range (158% strain), high sensitivity (22.88), low detection limit (0.0345%), fast response/recovery times (105/150 ms), and remarkable robustness (enduring 10 000 cycles at 20% strain). Furthermore, pressure sensors and sensing arrays are assembled by stacking conductive yarns perpendicularly using a self-bondable function, and self-healable helical-structured conductors are fabricated through the shape-memory effect. Important applications of multifunctional yarns in physiological motion detection, gesture recognition, and circuit connection are demonstrated. This concept creates opportunities for the construction of multifunctional and high-performance wearable electronic textiles.

Wearable piezoresistive sensors have attracted wide attention for application in human activities monitoring, smart robots, medical detection, etc. However, most of the sensing signals collected from the piezoresistive sensor are triggered by coupling forces, such as the combination of tension and pressure. Thus, the piezoresistive sensor would be incapable of accurately monitoring and evaluating specific human motion due to the mutual interference from tension and pressure, as the tension is difficult to be decoupled or eliminated from the coupling forces. Herein a prestretchable conductive yarn (PCY) sensor with pressure sensitivity but tension insensitivity was introduced to remove the disturbance from tension. The PCY-based piezoresistive sensor is tension insensitive (gauge factor of 0.11) but pressure sensitive (sensitivity of 187.33 MPa–1). The fabric-based pressure sensor assembled with cross-arranged PCY weft and warp revealed magnified pressure sensitivity compared with the single PCY yarn sensor, as well as tension insensitivity to strain and tensile angle. Moreover, it possessed benign cyclicity during 5000 cycles of pressing/releasing. Therefore, the fabric piezoresistive sensor based on weaved conductive yarns is suitable for highly accurate and large area pressure detection, such as monitoring massage intensity of acupuncture points.

With the rapid development of wearable electronics, conductive yarn strain sensors have attracted much attention due to their excellent flexibility, conformability, and knittability. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare flexible conductive yarn strain sensors with high sensitivity and wide working range simultaneously. Here, a large-scale fabrication of conductive spandex yarn (SY) with synergistic conductive coating composed of lower stable carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-polyaniline (PANi) hybrid layer and upper ultrasensitive cracked PANi layer was successfully achieved via the simple solvent swelling , non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS), and in-situ reduction processes. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the double layered conductive coating and its tunable microstructure based on the PANi content, the assembled conductive SY strain sensor exhibits wide working range (0–321 %), high sensitivity (GF is 43, 950, and 2439 for strain range of 0–100 %, 170–270 %, and 280–321 %, respectively), ultralow detection limit (0.5 %), fast response/recovery time (140 ms/160 ms), and excellent fatigue resistance (4000 cycles). As a proof of concept, the strain sensor can be used for wearable applications to achieve the effective detection of full-range human motion and physiologic signals. Besides, it also displays great potential in human-computer interaction for reliable operation of remote-control manipulator and flexible electronic textile for spatial pressure distribution identification. Finally, owing to the excellent optical absorbing ability of PANi and CNTs, the conductive SY exhibits high-efficient and stable photothermal conversion capacity even under the stretching and bending states, endowing it with good wearing comfort. This study provides a convenient but effective strategy for the fabrication of high-performance wearable strain sensor with excellent thermal management capacity.
