Cellulosic fiber (CF) has gained extensive attention as the flexible and supporting substrate of silver nanowires (AgNWs) due to its excellent mechanical properties and high specific surface area. However, its susceptibility to corrosion and abrasion still remains a limiting factor for widespread adoption in flexible electronic devices. Herein, we report a lignin-abundant cellulosic fiber (LCF)/AgNW conductive paper synthesized through a sample self-assembly method. Benefiting from the strong chemical/physical properties of the presence of lignin in the LCF, the LCF/AgNW paper was proved to possess enhanced stability to various chemical corrosions and excellent conductive reliability and reusability during mechanical abrasions (i.e., bending and friction). Importantly, the LCF/AgNW paper exhibited a high conductivity of 4561.88 S/cm at the laden AgNWs of 18.57 wt %, much higher than that of the CF/AgNW paper and other reported biomass-based conductive papers. Moreover, the LCF/AgNW paper also showed superior thermal management performances, possessing sensitive temperature driving capacity and rapid heat dispersive capacity. These efforts could provide a facile and feasible route for the design of next-generation heat dissipation components for flexible smart devices.

Herein, a novel, facile, and versatile approach to fabricate highly flexible and conductive paper is proposed by electroless deposition (ELD) with the assistance of aminocellulose as the interface layer. The obtained Cu nanoparticles (NPs)-coated cellulose paper is highly conductive with a significant low resistance of 0.38 Ω sq −1 after only 10 min of ELD treatment. This conductive cellulose paper shows excellent stability when it suffers from bending, folding, and tape adhesion cycles. With the same method, the Cu NPs can also be successfully deposited on the polypropylene (PP)-filled hybrid paper. The conductive paper exhibits very smooth and hydrophobic surface with high reflection, which can be used for special electronic devices. In a word, the fabrication of aminocellulose interface permits a controlled ELD of metal nanoparticles on paper substrate, and this mild and low-cost method opens up new opportunities for large-scale production of flexible and wearable electronics.

Paper-based sensors have good application prospects due to their flexibility and environmental protection. However, paper-based materials are difficult to balance both conductivity and flexibility. This paper mainly reports a high porosity conductive paper based on bamboo wood mixed fiber materials through the wet-manufacture method. The crucial material properties, and long-chain structure of PEDOT:PSS, play an important role in conductivity and flexibility. The relevant experiments show that conductive paper has excellent physical properties and electrical signal transmission capacity. Among them, the conductivity of paper-based electrodes is up to 18.52 S/cm, and there is a low delay in the transmission of the electric signal, when the signal frequency is 300 kHz, the phase frequency angle changes by only 4.9°, not only that, as an electrode, the human pulse signal measured in the capacitive sensor is normal. Under the action of other composite materials, the manufactured electronic paper has a certain mechanical strength, and the thickness is about 90 μm, lower than ordinary paper products. The research shows that the paper-based electrode has the advantages of high conductivity, low hysteresis, light, and thinness, which provides the possibility to be used as a flexible electrode. Conductive paper has the advantages of being low-cost, lightweight, disposable, flexible, and foldable, giving it promising potential in future electronics. However, mainstream conductive papers are opaque and rigid, which seriously affect the wide application of conductive paper. In this paper, we demonstrate a highly transparent, flexible, and conductive paper, fabricated by mixing cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) with silver nanowires (AgNWs) and then plasticizing with choline chloride/urea solvent. The as-prepared CNF/AgNW paper showed high transparency (~90% transmittance) and flexibility (~27% strain), and low sheet resistance (56 Ω/sq). Moreover, the resistance change of CNF/AgNW paper increased only ~1.1% after 3000 bending−unbending cycles under a 150° large angle, implying a long working life and stability. In view of this, our methodology has the potential to open a new powerful route for fabrication of paper-based green electronics. Keywords:conductive paper;cellulose nanofiber;silver nanowires;choline chloride/urea

Cellulosic conductive paper/film reinforced by graphene is a promising substrate for energy storage applications due to its comparable conductivity, great flexibility and low cost. However, how to balance the content ratio of graphene/cellulose well is still a challenge. Because conductive paper of low graphene content usually has poor electrical property, while high graphene content is also discouraged owing to the decrease in other properties though electrically improved. Based on this, we developed a different method to produce the graphene/cellulose composite conductive paper. Instead of a separate intermediate-fabrication, starting materials here are continuously one-pot processed, in prior to casting the intermediate paper (solid phase). Next, it is reduced by the l -ascorbic acid solution (liquid phase), followed by a filtration to give the hetero-reduced conductive paper (HRCP). Our results indicate that HRCP possesses high conductivity up to 376 ± 4 S/m, along with good thermal and dynamic behaviors, at a relatively low graphene content of 20 wt%. Therefore, HRCP is expected to be utilized in the field of emerging energy storage.

Silver nanowires were successfully prepared by polyol method using silver nitrate as silver source, ethylene glycol as solvent and reducing agent, and ferric chloride as nucleating agent and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as structure directing agent and protective agent. The obtained silver nanowires were mixed with Kraft pulp fibers and bacterial cellulose to prepare conductive paper via simple filtration process. The results indicated that the size of silver nanowires can be regulated by the dosage of ferric chloride used. At optimal dosage of FeCl3, the prepared silver nanowires can reach 20 μm length, 100 nm width, and 200 of width/diameter ratio. The adding of bacterial cellulose in preparing the conductive paper greatly enhanced the retention ratio of silver nanowires as well as the stress and strain of the conductive paper. The stress and strain of the paper with bacterial cellulose were increased by 60% and 7%, respectively, compared with that of the paper without bacterial cellulose. The maximum retention ratio and the highest recovery ratio of silver nanowires in conductive paper reached 94% and 75%, respectively. The resistance of as-prepared conductive paper was only 0.9 Ω. In conductive paper, the silver nanowires attached to the paper-based materials with cellulose fibers as the substrate, which achieved the electrical conductivity of paper-based materials. This conductive paper can be applied as antistatic, antibacterial packaging and conductive material.

Exploring an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material with lightweight, flexible and easy fabricating process to deal with the increasingly serious electromagnetic environment pollution has become a current developing trend. Here, we reported a novel cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/silver nanowire (AgNW) conductive paper with a distinctive hierarchical structure by a facile “blending-filtration-peeling” process. Results showed that the obtained paper with a thickness of ~40 μm exhibited excellent tensile strength of ~49.1 MPa, a low percolation threshold of 1.4 vol% AgNWs, no significant changes in electrical conductivity after 2000 bending. The outstanding synergy between green CNFs and AgNWs endowed the paper with high EMI shielding effectiveness of up to 39.3 dB in X band and effective shielding effects on electromagnetic signals for realistic mobile phone communication. The special CNF/AgNW papers are expected to broaden new application fields as electronic devices e.g. flexible electronic components or effective ultra-thin EMI shielding materials for daily demands.

To date, flexible pressure sensors built on silver nanowires (AgNWs) have attracted tremendous attention, owing to their versatile applications in wearable, human-interactive, health-monitoring devices. Cellulose and its derivatives, which show great promise in serving flexible pressure sensors as the desired substrate due to their natural abundance, biocompatibility, easy processibility, and low costs. Herein, we reported a rational strategy to design a silver nanowires-dual-cellulose conductive paper. Its morphology, chemical and crystal structures, thermal stability , mechanical performances, and electrical properties were carefully studied. The results suggested that good tensile properties (tensile strength ≤8.10 MPa), high electrical conductivity (≤ 1.74 × 10 4 S·m −1 ) with long-term stability, and good adhesion stability (bending cycles over 500) were obtained. Furthermore, the use of such conductive paper as substrate for versatile flexible pressure sensors was demonstrated, which exhibited fast response (~ 0.48 s) and high sensitivity, in response to finger motion, voice recognition, and human pulse, etc.

A novel conductive paper based on cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with a sandwich structure was successfully prepared through step-by-step vacuum filtration followed by a chemical reduction process in which a CNF layer is sandwiched between two thin RGO layers. This unique design strategy not only provides a highly conductive network for its surface but also maintains the structural integrity of CNF. The sandwich-structured paper exhibits a significantly conductive anisotropy, and the in-plane electrical conductivity is drastically enhanced as 4382 S m–1 with only 4 wt % RGO, whereas it is insulating along the cross-plane direction. This can be attributed to the RGO layers at the top and bottom surface connected in parallel. This high electrical conductivity is greatly superior to most of the cellulose/graphene composite papers obtained by conventional blending processes. Compared with the similar layer-by-layer assembly technique, the present method is more feasible and time saving. Moreover, the sandwich-structured paper shows excellent mechanical strength and good flexibility, which may facilitate its applications in future flexible electronics.

How to survive under various harsh working conditions is a key challenge for flexible electronic devices because their performances are always susceptible to environments. Herein, we demonstrate the novel design and fabrication of a new kind of the all-weather flexible electrically conductive paper based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HNs) with unique combination of the superhydrophobic surface, electrothermal effect, and flame retardancy. The superhydrophobic surface with water repellency stabilizes the electrically conductive performance of the paper in water. For example, the electrical current through the superhydrophobic paper onto which water droplets are deposited shows a little change (0.38%), and the electrical performance is steady as well even when the paper is immersed in water for 120 s (just 3.65% change). In addition, the intrinsic electrothermal effect of the electrically conductive paper can efficiently heat the paper to reach a high temperature, for example, 224.25 °C, within 10 s. The synergistic effect between the electrothermal effect and superhydrophobic surface accelerates the melting and removal of ice on the heated electrically conductive paper. Deicing efficiency of the heated superhydrophobic electrically conductive paper is ∼4.5 times that of the unheated superhydrophobic electrically conductive paper and ∼10.4 times that of the heated superhydrophilic paper. More importantly, benefiting from fire-resistant ultralong HNs, thermally stable Ketjen black, and Si–O backbone of poly(dimethylsiloxane), we demonstrate the stable and continuous service of the as-prepared electrically conductive paper in the flame for as long as 7 min. The electrical performance of the electrically conductive paper after flame treatment can maintain as high as 90.60% of the original value. The rational design of the electrically conductive paper with suitable building materials and structure demonstrated here will give an inspiration for the development of new kinds of all-weather flexible electronic devices that can work under harsh conditions.

There is growing interest in the development of “green” electronics fabricated from “natural” materials, which could lead to renewable, sustainable, and potentially inexpensive organic optoelectronics. In this paper, a novel, facile, and full-solution processed approach has been successfully demonstrated to fabricate a highly flexible and conductive paper electrode by electroless deposition with dopamine molecules as an adhesion layer on newly hybrid paper. The novel paper substrate was prepared through a simple hot-press process with commercial paper and polypropylene (PP) film. It has a smooth surface and improved mechanical properties. Importantly, it is flexible and highly resistant to water, which are important for solution processes. The obtained highly conductive paper exhibited a smooth and hydrophobic surface with high reflection. In addition, these conductive papers also showed excellent mechanical flexibility and stability, indicating the strong adhesion between the metal and hybrid paper, which facilitates the roll-to-roll process of the device. As a possible application, this paper electrode can be effectively used as a mechanical support and an electrode in an organic light-emitting diode (OLED), showing potential possibilities in future electronics.

With the rapid development of wearable intelligent devices, low-cost wearable strain sensors with high sensitivity and low detection limit are urgently demanded. Meanwhile, sensing stability of sensor in wet or corrosive environments should also be considered in practical applications. Here, superhydrophobic microcracked conductive paper-based strain sensor was fabricated by coating conductive Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene on printing paper via dip-coating process and followed by depositing superhydrophobic candle soot layer on its surface. Owing to the ultrasensitive microcrack structure in the conductive coating layer induced by the mismatch of elastic modulus and thermal expansion coefficient between conductive coating layer and paper substrate during the drying process, the prepared paper-based strain sensor exhibited a high sensitivity (gauge factor, GF = 17.4) in the strain range of 0–0.6%, ultralow detection limit (0.1% strain) and good fatigue resistance over 1000 cycles towards bending deformation . Interestingly, it was also applicable for torsion deformation detection, showing excellent torsion angle dependent, repeatable and stable sensing performances. Meanwhile, it displayed brilliant waterproof, self-cleaning and corrosion-resistant properties due to the existence of micro/nano-structured and the low surface energy candle soot layer. As a result, the prepared paper-based strain sensor can effectively monitor a series of large-scale and small-scale human motions even under water environment , showing the great promising in practical harsh outdoor environments . Importantly, it also demonstrated good applicability for spatial strain distribution detection of skin upon body movement when assembled into electronic-skin (E-skin). This study will provide great guidance for the design of next generation wearable strain sensor.
