Engineering porous carbon with small mesopores and narrow pore distribution is an effective strategy to trade-off the capacitive performances and pore structure of carbon materials. Here, mesoporous carbon with small pore size and bimodal distribution is successfully constructed from the mixture of coal tar pitch and agar via one-pot pyrolysis method in molten salt (KCl/KHCO 3 ). The formation process of bimodal pore structure is unveiled. During pyrolysis process, the agar with rich oxygen-containing groups generates abundant free radicals, which can not only accelerate the cross-linking reaction rate of pitch molecules to construct the carbon sketch, but also introduce oxygen-containing functional groups between carbon layers to effectively prevent the stacking effect of carbon. Therefore, the diffusion of molten KCl/K 2 CO 3 into the interior of the carbon layer is facilitated to achieve homogeneous activation to form bimodal pore structure. In three-electrode testing system, the optimized carbon shows superior rate capability with a specific capacitance of 220.0 F g −1 at 200.0 A g −1 in 6.0 mol L −1 KOH electrolyte. In two-electrode system, the capacitors in 1.0 mol L −1 TEABF 4 /acetonitrile achieves maximal energy density of 44.6 Wh kg −1 and power density of 34,000 W kg −1 . This work supplies a facile strategy to prepare small-sized mesoporous carbon material with high capacitive performances.

TiO 2 nanotubes prepared by anodization of titanium metal substrates are widely used as functional materials in various fields. Small pore size TiO 2 nanotube arrays are demanded because of their excellent performance in applications. However, the minimum pore size of TiO 2 nanotube arrays has been limited to ~15 nm (nm) despite of long time extensive studies. In the present work, we have fabricated TiO 2 nanotube arrays with diameter down to an unprecedented low value of ~6 nm in ammonium fluoride-containing ethylene glycol electrolyte by a simple one-step anodic oxidation method under optimized condition. The influences of concentration of ammonium fluoride, viscosity of solution, amount of adding water and applied voltage on the anodic growth of small pore TiO 2 nanotubes are studied systematically. Pore initiation and widening determined by the competition between chemical dissolution and field driven growth of anodic oxides under relative low formation field strength are investigated, where local concentration of fluoride anions and acidity near pore bottom are believed to play significant roles in the formation of nanoporous or nanotubular TiO 2 with ultra-small pore diameter and cell size. By sealing the reaction cell to prevent the solution from absorbing ambient water, typical TiO 2 nanotube arrays with a pore diameter of ~10.8 nm can grow up to ~1.1 μm in length, i.e. an aspect ratio up to 100, which is remarkable for TiO 2 nanotubes with such small pore size.

Due to their unique structures and physicochemical properties, porous anodic metal oxides including Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , Ta 2 O 5 and so on, prepared by anodization of corresponding metal substrates in appropriate electrolytes have found applications in various fields. Pore diameter plays a significant role in applications of these anodic metal oxides. It is a common knowledge that the pore diameter of porous metal oxides increases with formation voltage despite of a vast variation of anodization parameters and electrolytes used. Here, we demonstrate that the pore diameter and cell size of anodic TiO 2 nanotube arrays can decrease dramatically under high voltage accompanied by high current density. Impact factors determining the formation of small pore TiO 2 nanotubes under high voltage were discussed. Typically, with the same electrolyte used, the average pore diameter of TiO 2 nanotube arrays changes from ca 26 nm at a formation voltage of 10 V to ca 13 nm at 200 V. It is also demonstrated that at high voltage, small pore TiO 2 nanotubes could be grown with a rate orders of magnitude faster than those grown in a classic way with low voltage and current density.

3D superwetting materials struggle to maintain high-flux steady-state demulsification for oil-in-water emulsions because the accumulated oil within the material is difficult to discharge rapidly. The water flow shear force can swiftly remove the oil from the anti-fouling surface. In this study, by introducing nanofibers and carbon nanotubes and chemical modification, a superhydrophilic-oleophobic copper foam with pores of several micrometers is prepared, which can achieve a continuous demulsification process with steady-state flux over 57000 L m −2 h −1 for oil-in-water emulsions and rapid hydraulic-driven oil release under an additional pressure of 5 kPa. Thanks to the ultra-small pores of the copper foam, the steady-state demulsification efficiency can be still maintained at over 97.5%. During the demulsification process, the accumulation of oil and surfactants within the copper foam can be maintained at low levels, achieving dynamic equilibrium. With the aid of second-stage superhydrophilic copper mesh, the demulsified oil-water mixtures can be rapidly separated. This high-flux, steady-state, and efficient demulsification process shows great potential for industrial applications.
