In this study, a series of high temperature resistant water-soluble thermoplastic sizing agents were designed and synthesized to improve the interfacial bonding of CF/PPESK composites. The effects of the ratio of water-soluble functional monomer (PPL) and high temperature resistant monomer (DHPZ) on the performance of the pastes were investigated. The results showed that the sizing agent with PPL: DHPZ = 6: 4 had the best performance, and its thermal decomposition temperature was up to 348 °C, which met the requirements of the composite molding process. The ILSS and flexural strength reached the peaks of 67.2 MPa and 1526.5 MPa. The retention rates were 89.7 % and 81.8 %, respectively, after hydrothermal aging treatment, compared with 77.7 % and 79.2 % for the epoxy sizing agent. The bottleneck of traditional epoxy sizing agent and CF/PPESK composites molding process mismatch has been broken.

To enhance the interfacial adhesion of short carbon fiber (SCF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites, a new modified chlorinated polypropylene resin (g-CPP) was synthesized and utilized to manufacture the sizing agent for SCF. The findings of thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed that g-CPP had high thermal characteristics, with its glass transition temperature (Tg) raised by 11°C.The g-CPP sizing agent that has been developed has increased storage stability (particle size was 109.8 nm). The contact angle of SCF was reduced from 81.52° to 60.04° after sizing, and the surface free energy was raised from 29.31 mN/m soared to 47.13 mN/m. The SCF/PP composites with 1 wt% sizing agent demonstrated the best interfacial adhesion, with improvements in flexural and tensile strengths of 54% and 39%, respectively. The interfacial reinforcement mechanism of sizing agent to improve interfacial adhesion was investigated. This work proposes an attractive way for the future preparation of high-performance SCF/PP composites.

Despite the impressing advances on sizing agents for CF/PEEK composites, the aromatic backbone of the polymer precursors utilized in the vast majority of reports compromises the dispersity and ductility of the slurry, subsequently resulting in inferior overall performance of the composites. Meanwhile, most resins employed for sizing agents in existing reports are based on petroleum resources. Herein, a bio-based waterborne sizing agent utilizing semi-aromatic poly ether ketones (PIEK-C) derived from isosorbide and phenolphthalein has been disclosed, featured by its salutary dispersity, exceptional thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures, and broader applicability. Due to the structural similarity between the sizing and resin matrix, the protocol endowed CF/PEEK composites with ameliorated overall performance, addressing issues related to inadequate adhesion of CF with PEEK resin, as well as environmental pollution commonly associated with existing commercial epoxy and solvent-based sizing agents. The T g and T 5% of PIEK-C-5050 were 205.08 and 427.16°C, respectively. The particle size range of the PIEK-C sizing agents spanned from 66.32 to 84.63 nm. The flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of the composites experienced a respective 993.92 MPa (30.73%) and 83.32 MPa (36.97%) increase compared to untreated CF/PEEK composites following sizing treatment with PIEK-C-5050, underscoring expedient intermolecular interactions based on comparable solubility and π-π stacking effects between the PEEK and PIEK-C components. This study introduced an efficient and eco-friendly approach to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK composites. Highlights PIEK-C resin is employed for the first time to prepare carbon fiber sizing agents. The PIEK-C sizing agent significantly fortified the surface energy and wettability of carbon fibers. The CF/PEEK composites after treatment with PIEK-C sizing agent showed excellent heat resistance. The ILSS and bending strength of the composites were significantly increased by 36.97% and 30.73%, respectively.

The inert structure and high molding temperature of thermoplastic resin bring new challenges to carbon fiber (CF) sizing agents. Herein, an easily purified semi-aliphatic polyimide (SA-PI) was synthesized as CF sizing agent. The SA-PI has no significant decomposition before 300 °C and a 5% decomposition temperature of 442 °C. Based on the solubility of its polyamic acid ammonium salt, the SA-PI is configured as an aqueous solution for CF sizing. The results show the surface of sized carbon fiber (SCF) is covered with a sizing coating. At the same time, the polar group of the sizing coating increases the surface energy by 28.45%. Compared with bare CF, the tensile strength of SCF is increased by 11.43%, the ILSS and flexural strength of SCF/PEEK increased from 55.71 MPa and 485.34 MPa to68.98 MPa and 523.33 MPa, respectively. In addition, the micro-morphology at the fracture of the composite clearly proves that the sizing agent improves the interface performance of the composites effectively.

Considering the development of CFRPs , addressing the challenge through the simplistic industrial operational methods to achieve high strength and toughness in carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (EP) composites (CFRPs) is imperative. In this work, an innovative approach introduced to improve the strength and toughness of CFRPs by application of a nano emulsion encapsulated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) sizing agent (POE sizing agent). The employment of a POE sizing agent markedly enhanced the surface energy and roughness of carbon fibers (CF) as well as the interface properties of CFRPs. Furthermore, the 10-PCF (10 wt% POE sizing CF) reinforced EP unidirectional CFRPs demonstrated superior strength and toughness. Relative to the DCF (Desizing CF) reinforced EP unidirectional CFRPs, their interlaminar shear strength , flexural strength , and unnotched impact strength increased by 24.9 %, 37.8 %, and 45.6 %, respectively, reaching 99.8 ± 2.3 MPa, 1376.8 ± 21.6 MPa, and 94.9 ± 4.6 kJ/m 2 . Concurrently, the 10-PCF reinforced EP composite laminates exhibited outstanding impact resistance, minimal damage area, and enhanced compressive strength after impact. Additionally, the strength, bundling, and flexibility of the sized CF were maintained, ensuring the processability of CF. The utilization of POE sizing agent for strength and toughness improvement in CFRPs offers a straightforward and industrially feasible approach. This research opens up a novel strategy for high-performance CF and CFRPs preparation.

Carbon fiber/PEEK composites have gained significant attention in the field of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). However, it remains challenging to improve the weak interfacial strength between carbon fiber (CF) and PEEK matrix. In this paper, strong interactions at the interface of sizing agent and carbon fiber were effectively achieved by introducing chemical bonds. Specifically, a soluble PEEK sizing agent where aniline served as pendant group and phenylacetylene served as blocking agent was synthesized. In the meantime, the phenylacetylene group was grafted on the carbon fiber surface through electroreduction . Then, the soluble sizing agent was used to size the electrochemical treated carbon fiber. After the heat treatment, chemical bonds were established by the crosslinking reaction of phenylacetylene groups existed in both the surface of carbon fiber and sizing agent. Meanwhile, the crystalline structure in the sizing layer was remained, which could improve the toughness of the interphase. As a result, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased by 137.5% from 43.4 MPa of the untreated carbon fiber (U-CF) to 103.1 MPa of the reductive electrografted and coated carbon fiber (E-C-CF). The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) also increased by 66.8% from 58.4 MPa of untreated CF/PEEK composites (U-CF/PEEK) to 97.4 MPa of reductive electrografted and coated CF/PEEK composites (E-C-CF/PEEK). The outstanding performances could be attributed to better compatibility of sizing agent and most importantly, the existence of chemical bonds between the carbon fiber and sizing agent.

A series of novel aqueously soluble semi-aromatic (co)polyamides, poly[(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylene) terephthalamide]- ran -poly[(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylene) (2,5-dihydroxy-3,6-diallyl)terephthalamide] (CRPAOT-x), were prepared via the solid-state Claisen rearrangement reaction of poly[(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylene) terephthalamide]- ran -poly[(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylene) 2,5-bis(allyloxy)terephthalamide] (APAOT-x), where x (= 0, 13, 25, 50, 75, and 100) represents the molar fraction of allyloxy containing unit. APAOT-x was obtained through the interfacial copolymerization of terephthaloyl chloride, 2,5-bis(allyloxy)terephthaloyl chloride, and 2,2′-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine). The reaction conditions including reactant concentration, temperature, and solvent were optimized. The chemical structures of the target (co)polyamides and their precursors were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies. The incorporation of hydrophilic (ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylene) units greatly improved the polymer solubility. CRPAOT-x dissolved not only in polar organic solvents such as dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and N-methyl pyrrolidone but also in ammonia water. Due to the presence of hydroxyl groups and oxygen-rich aliphatic units, CRPAOT-x showed excellent affinity toward epoxy resins. The microbond test indicated that the aramid fibers sized by these dual-functional polymers exhibited remarkably enhanced interfacial shear strength in epoxy matrices. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A thermally reversible sizing agent was prepared by directly mixing the furfurylamine-modified epoxy resin (FAE) and the maleimide-functionalized Jeffamine T403 (MAT), and it was used to impart self-healing ability at interface based on the reversible Diels–Alder reaction for potential application in carbon fiber composites. The surface characteristics of FAE/MAT-modified carbon fibers were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dynamic contact angle meter and tensiometer. The initial interfacial shear strength of modified carbon fiber composites and the multiple healings of the interface were investigated via a microbond test. The results demonstrated that the healing efficiency of the continuous and uniform FAE–MAT sizing layer functionalized carbon fiber composites was up to 93.8% for the first healing cycle. Furthermore, it is expected that the interface self-healing of carbon fiber reinforced composites can be achieved from research laboratory to industrial applications by this strategy.
