Influence of boundary masks on dimensions and surface roughness using segmented exposure in ceramic 3D printing

Xiangquan Wu,Qin Lian,Dichen Li,Xiaoning He,Jiali Meng,Xiaodong Liu,Zhongmin Jin

Mask projection stereolithography can be used to fabricate complex ceramic parts layer by layer through the photopolymerisation of ceramic suspensions. The broadening or lateral overcure of the curing shape occurs because of light scattering effects. Achieving a better dimension and strength quality by adjusting light energy delivery in the boundary mask area has been insufficiently investigated thus far. In this study, the conventional mask was segmented into boundary and interior masks. The exposure time and power of the boundary mask (two pixels wide) were varied to investigate the effects of segmented exposure. The segmented exposure constrained the dimension errors to a width of within two pixels for a feature dimension of less than 1200 µm. It further smoothed the lateral surface of the green part to achieve Ra values of below 6 µm. Moreover, enhancing the boundary mask increased the flexural strength and Weibull modulus to 248 MPa and 11.1, respectively. The results indicate that segmented exposure can potentially be used in complex lattice ceramic structures.

Crown fit and dimensional accuracy of zirconia fixed crowns based on the digital light processing technology

Jiali Meng,Qin Lian,Shuang Xi,Yingjie Yi,Yi Lu,Guofeng Wu

Zirconia is extensively used for manufacturing dental prostheses because of its superior mechanical properties . The idea of using 3D printing to manufacture zirconia dental prostheses has gradually become popular, but printing accurate shapes and obtaining excellent dimensional accuracy still remain challenging. In this study, the optimal curing parameters and shrinkage ratios of zirconia slurry were investigated using a multi-angle model and a standard fixed crown model. Then the dimensional accuracy and crown fit were investigated, and the fixed crown and fixed bridge were fabricated by using digital light processing (DLP) technology. Further, the dimensional accuracy and crown fit were investigated. The results showed that the optimal curing parameters and enlargement factors for zirconia fixed crown printing were 80 PWM (light source power), 2s (curing time) and 1.400, 1.400, 1.500 (in X, Y, Z directions), respectively. The internal fit was 239.3 ± 7.9 μm, which met the clinical criteria (≤300 μm), whereas the marginal fit was 128.1 ± 7.1 μm, which was extremely close to the clinical criteria (≤120 μm). For dimensional accuracy, the standard error of sintered fixed crown was 0.14 ± 0.06 mm, and the boundary dimensional accuracy and anatomical landmark points’ dimensional accuracy were also investigated. In addition, the density of sintered zirconia was 6.01 ± 0.02 g/cm 3 . From the results of this study, it could be found that the crown fit of zirconia fixed crowns printed using the DLP technique could be close to clinical standards, although there is still a gap with the zirconia fixed crowns from the milling technique. In addition incomplete removal of the support structures have a negative impact on dimensional accuracy, hence it is necessary to further explore the optimization strategies of the support structures for improving the dimensional accuracy of fixed crowns printed by DLP.

KH571 construct interfacial molecular bridge in calcium silicate/TMPTA/HDDA scaffolds for improving mechanical properties, biodegradability and photopolymerization

Yutong Chen,Zhitao Yin,Yue Zhao,Zhengyang Jin,Seeram Ramakrishna,Yan Xu,Xujing Zhang

Digital Light Processing (DLP) offers the potential for personalized bone implants. Within this method, the interfacial bonding capacity of inorganic/organic materials and the solid-phase content of the slurry emerge as primary factors influencing scaffolds mechanical properties. In this research, KH571 was applied to establish an interfacial “molecular bridge”, adopting in situ coupling technology to forge stable covalent bonds between calcium silicate (CSi) and KH571. Chemical grafting, surface photografting, and photopolymerization techniques were then utilized to construct a photo-crosslinked network by CSi-KH571-TMPTA/HDDA slurry, thereby transforming the weak physical connections at the interface into strong chemical bonds. Consequently, the curing capacity and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were enhanced. Further control grain size, crystal phase transition, and shrinkage of CSi-KH571 scaffolds, post-treatment sintering processes were employed, resulting in scaffolds with a high content of β-CSi. Moreover, the optimal process parameters were selected concerning grafting rate, chemical composition, microscopic morphology, crystalline transformation, dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility of CSi-KH571. The elastic modulus and compressive properties of CSi25-55 scaffolds exhibited a notable improvement of 29.71 % and 59.30 %, respectively, compared to CSi-50 scaffolds. By regulating the phase composition of CSi, CSi25-55 scaffolds were designed to possess a controllable degradation. In vitro cell culture experiments validated its excellent biocompatibility and promoted the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) as well as the deposition of bone matrix. Herein, a novel and sustainable approach has been promoted for enhancing the interfacial bonding capacity of inorganic/organic materials and the solid-phase content of printing slurry, which lays the foundation for the printing of high-resolution degradable bioceramic scaffolds.
