The intractable nature of oil-contaminated soil (OS) constitutes the chief limiting factor for its remediation. Herein, the aging effect (i.e., oil–soil interactions and pore-scale effect) was investigated by analyzing the properties of aged OS and further demonstrated by investigating the desorption behavior of the oil from the OS. XPS was performed to detect the chemical environment of N, O, and Al, indicating the coordination adsorption of carbonyl groups (oil) on the soil surface. Alterations in the functional groups of the OS were detected using FT–IR, indicating that the oil–soil interactions were enhanced via wind-thermal aging. SEM and BET were used to analyze the structural morphology and pore-scale of the OS. The analysis revealed that aging promoted the development of the pore-scale effect in the OS. Moreover, the desorption behavior of oil molecules from the aged OS was investigated via desorption thermodynamics and kinetics. The desorption mechanism of the OS was elucidated via intraparticle diffusion kinetics. The desorption process of oil molecules underwent three stages: film diffusion, intraparticle diffusion, and surface desorption. Owing to the aging effect, the latter two stages constituted the major steps for controlling oil desorption. This mechanism provided theoretical guidance to apply microemulsion elution for remedying industrial OS.

The rising prominence of energy security and climate change issues necessitates the advancement of sustainable energy development and energy storage technologies. Enhancing the capabilities of mesoporous composite phase change materials (CPCMs) has gained considerable research interest. CPCM’s heat storage and release performance is largely determined by its thermal conductivity. While the existing literature has documented the individual effects of the composition ratio of mixed molten salts, scale effects, and interfacial effects on thermal conductivity, no studies have been found that investigate the competitive interplay among these three factors with respect to their impact on thermal conductivity. This study aims to gain a deeper insight into the thermal conductivity changes of CPCM consisting of mixed molten salts as the phase change material (PCM) and mesoporous skeleton. A combination of molecular dynamics simulations and experimental investigations was employed to explore how interface effects, scale effects, and the proportion of mixed salts contribute to the thermal conductivity of CPCM. The findings indicate that augmented thermal conductivity, resulting from interface effects, supersedes the diminishing effects of interionic interactions. Compared to mixed salt ratios, interface effects primarily result in variations in the thermal conductivity of CPCM. The thermal conductivity of mixed nitrates escalates alongside scale increases. In the 3–4 nm range, the scale effect and mixed nitrate proportions do not notably compete in terms of influence on thermal conductivity, interface effects are more profound than scale effects. In the 4–9.5 nm range, the scale effect is more profound than mixed nitrate ratios. If the skeleton transitions from SiO 2 to Al 2 O 3 , the impact of the interface effect on thermal conductivity is greater influential than the scale effect. While transitioning the interface from Al 2 O 3 to ceramic, the effect of the interface is less than or equal to that of the scale effect on the thermal conductivity.

Polybenzoxazine (PBZ) has been recognized as a potential substitute for traditional phenolic resin. However, poor flexibility and low heat resistance limited obviously the application of PBZ. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) nanosheet and its amino-rich derivatives ( f GO- g -SiO 2 ) with multi-scale surfaces were designed, synthesized and incorporated into main-chain PBZ through in-situ polymerization to fabricate PBZ composites. The morphology, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the composites were systematically investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), contact angle tests, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), tensile and impact tests, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed the multi-scale surfaces of GO derivatives and ordered structures, respectively. The size of the in-situ grown SiO 2 and the thickness of GO coated on PBZ were estimated as 6.5 and 19.07 nm, respectively. The contact angle test revealed that f GO- g -SiO 2 and BZ had the closest solid surface energy of 32.002 and 43.519 mN/m, respectively, among the components of the composites. The impact and tensile evaluation revealed the highest impact, tensile strength and Young's modulus of 16.75 kJ/m 2 , 107.24 MPa and 3.17 GPa, respectively for 1.2% f GO- g -SiO 2 /PBZ composite. The modified Halpin-Tsai equation was also utilized to develop a predictive function for the tensile strength. FESEM of f GO- g -SiO 2 /PBZ composites indicated that the multi-scale effect and amination effectively improved the restriction of GO derivatives on crack propagation in PBZ composites and played a more significant role in crack deflection and bridging. In addition, the highest thermal decomposition activation energy of 166.94 kJ/mol was achieved for 1.2% f GO- g -SiO 2 /PBZ composite. Highlights Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were incorporated into main-chain polybenzoxazine (PBZ) to improve its mechanical properties and heat resistance. GO with multi-scale structure and amino-rich interface were designed, synthesized to improve the interface interactions with PBZ matrix. The GO with multi-scale structure and amino-rich interface showed excellent similarity in the term of solid surface energy with benzoxazine oligomers. The morphology, mechanical and thermal stability of resulting PBZ composites was systematically investigated by using experimental and mathematical model to elucidate the relationships between the structure and properties. The composites exhibited excellent mechanical and thermal properties, and it is expected to be used as advanced engineering material in demanding environments.

Microchannel reactors have garnered significant attention in various chemical processes due to their ability to achieve rapid mixing. However, there remains ample opportunity for the development of microchannel reactors with simple structures and high throughput. In this work, we propose a novel microannular rotating bed (MARB) that integrates the high-gravity field and microscale effect to enhance the micromixing efficiency. The Villermaux–Dushman reaction system is employed to investigate the influence of the operating parameters on the mixing performance. The micromixing time of the MARB ranges from 10–4 to 10–3 s for low-viscosity Newtonian fluids and from 10–4 to 10–2 s for shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluids. In a lab-scale setup, the MARB demonstrates a throughput of 6 L/min, markedly surpassing the capabilities of the existing microchannel reactors. Furthermore, the evaluation of energy dissipation rate underscores the MARB’s remarkable energetic efficiency in intensifying mixing processes. The MARB, with its simple design, high throughput capacity, and efficiency, presents a promising alternative for the intensification of mixing across diverse chemical applications.

Composite chloride salts have become molten salt heat storage materials with high development potential due to their excellent heat storage performance. Since chloride salts are prone to leakage, they need to be adsorbed onto porous materials to prepare composite phase change materials (CPCMs). Changes in the pore size of porous materials will lead to changes in the scale of chloride salts. Currently, there is little research on the impact of scale variation on the thermophysical and phase change characteristics of composite chloride salts, and the underlying mechanisms are not yet clear. With the ZnCl 2 -NaCl-KCl (3:1:1 mol%) eutectic salt as the phase change material (PCM), this study integrates molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with an experimental approach to investigate the impact of scale on the thermophysical properties and phase change properties of CPCM. The inherent influence mechanism of scale effect is analyzed from a microscopic perspective. The results indicate that as the scale increases, the interaction energy between molecules within the system gradually increases, and the system structure becomes more compact. The thermal conductivity first increases and then decreases, reaching a maximum of 0.45 W/(m·K) at 8 nm; the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient gradually decreases. As the scale increases from 3 nm to 15 nm, the melting temperature rises by 8.1 %, while the solidification temperature decreases by 1.73 %, resulting in a significant increase in the degree of supercooling. The latent heat gradually increases with scale, which is consistent with the coordination number.
