This study investigates the novel application of microwave heating to optimize the rheology, interlayer bond, and buildability of 3D-printed geopolymers at various printing stages. Unlike conventional methods, microwave heating significantly enhances stacking performance (buildability) while reducing flowability, addressing critical challenges in 3D printing. The findings also indicate that deformation resistance coefficients for fiber-free and fiber-reinforced geopolymers reaches 0.933–1.00 after 30 and 45 seconds of microwave exposure, respectively, demonstrating superior shape retention ability after microwave heating. Notably, microwave heating improves ultra-early (i.e., 2 h and 4 h) interfacial strength proportionally to power and duration, offering a breakthrough for rapid construction. In addition, drying shrinkage decreases by 0.096–0.226 % (fiber-free), 0.054–0.166 % (PE fiber), and 0.067–0.17 % (steel fiber), highlighting the efficacy of microwave heating in mitigating cracking of 3D-printed geopolymers. The optimized microwave processing parameters establish in this study serve as a foundation for in-line, large-scale 3D printing applications, offering a scalable solution in printability and structural integrity.

Interlayer bonding strength (IBS) is the decisive factor governing the performance of fused deposition modeling (FDM) parts. However, limited research has been conducted on regulating the material molecular structure within FDM processes to enhance IBS. In this study, different acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) specimens for FDM were fabricated by strategically modifying the molecular structure of ABS through emulsion grafting polymerization (to control grafted layer thickness) and seed amplification methodology (to achieve a bimodal particle size distribution). The grafted layer thickness of ABS polybutadiene (PB) phase particles, the compatibility between the two phases, the IBS, and the resulting properties of the FDM parts were investigated. The results demonstrate that increasing the grafted layer thickness of the ABS PB phase particles enhances the compatibility between the phases and increases the fluidity of the ABS melt. Consequently, this improves both the diffusion ability and time for molecular chains during the FDM process, thereby further enhancing IBS. Regulating a bimodal distribution of PB phase particle size further increased ABS melt fluidity, leading to additional IBS improvement. The IBS was directly quantified by T-peel tests, revealing an 110.8 % increase from ABS-1 to ABS-3, with ABS-3 exhibiting a 32.2 % higher peel strength (3.12 N/mm) than a commercial ABS. Following IBS enhancement, the impact strength increased by 60.7 % at 25 °C and by 161.5 % at −30 °C, while the tensile strength increased by 55.6 %. The retention rate of low-temperature impact strength increased by 62.6 %. Furthermore, the dimensional stability of the FDM parts demonstrated significant improvement.

This study investigates the interlayer bonding mechanism between epoxy primers and polyurethane topcoats commonly used in marine coatings. Previous studies have focused on the physical bonding between the coatings, but this study focused on the theory of chemical bonding. Using E-44 and HP2000 as primers and MDI toluene solution to simulate a polyurethane topcoat, the changes in the molecular structure at the interface between the epoxy primer and the polyurethane topcoat after curing were revealed by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy (SFG) technique. The experiments showed that the hydroxyl (-OH) signals on the surface of the epoxy primer disappeared after contacting with the MDI solution, and the isocyanate (-NCO) and carbonyl (C=O) signals on the urethane topcoat were revealed, suggesting that a chemical reaction occurred between them. The results of SFG analysis were further supported by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that chemical bonding had a positive effect on the macroscopic properties of the coatings, indicating that the interlayer bonding between the primer and the topcoat could be significantly enhanced by chemical bonding, which provides new theoretical support for the interlayer bonding of the coating support system for marine environment.
