This study evaluated the effects of adding various concentrations (0 %, 1 %, 2 %, and 3 %) of peach gum (PG) to films made from polyethylene oxide (PEO) combined with Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCEO) to be utilized as active packaging for food in the future. The findings showed that the film containing PG 2 % concentration had the best physic-mechanical properties. In films made with PG, the glass transition temperature was significantly improved. Combining PG and PEO resulted in films that were brighter in color, had lower WVP values, and had the lowest water activity. Furthermore, XRD demonstrated that PG additions were compatible with the film of PEO blended with LCEO. The PG films formulated with PG presented high antioxidant and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli . Wrapping beef with P2G2 film led to maintaining its quality with suitable levels of pH, TBARS , and TVB-N. This also decreased the number of E. coli and S. aureus in beef throughout the storage period. The results indicate that adding PG to PEO films enhances their suitability for food preservation.

The infection of Campylobacter jejuni ( C. jejuni ) in food can cause huge economic and health costs, and liposomes based on biological switch is a promising antibacterial strategy. In this study, a bio-responsive composite liposome was designed with silk fibroin and L-fucose (FLPs) based on the chemotaxis and protease of C. jejuni , and Litsea cubeba essential oil as antibacterial agent. The oil encapsulation and protein mosaic rates of the composite liposome were 70.6 ± 0.5% and 47.9 ± 1.0%, respectively. The in vitro release experiment verified that the release rates of essential oil from the liposome exceeded 95% at 5 days. Furthermore, FLPs possessed excellent antibacterial activity , the inhibition zone was 23.5 mm and 20% ( v /v) of the composite liposomes could inactivate 99% C. jejuni . Moreover, laser scanning confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the antimicrobial activity of FLPs was better than that of other liposomes, and it could attach to bacteria well. Sprayed liposomes revealed sustained ability of retarding bacterial reproduction within 5 days with the refrigerated chicken meat inoculated with C. jejuni , and had no impact on the color and texture of the food. Hence, the bio-responsive composite liposome has a promising application in inhibiting C. jejuni growth in food. Industrial relevance In this study, the composite liposome with high encapsulation efficiency shows significant and sustained antibacterial activity, and has no negative effects on the color and texture of chicken meat. The findings of this study will facilitate the development and application of liposomes as active antimicrobial packaging in food industry.

Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCEO) has garnered widespread attention due to its robust biological activity. However, challenges such as high volatility, limited water solubility, and low bioavailability impede its application. Nano-emulsion encapsulation technology offers an effective solution to these issues. In this study, we prepared litsea cubeba essential oil nano-emulsion (LCEO-NE) for the first time using whey protein (WP) as the emulsifier through an ultrasonic-assisted method, achieving high efficiency with minimal energy consumption. Transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering analyses revealed that the nanoparticles were uniformly spherical, with a particle size of 183.5 ± 1.19 nm and a zeta potential of −35.5 ± 0.95 mV. Stability studies revealed that LCEO-NE exhibited excellent thermal and salt stability, maintaining its integrity for up to four weeks when stored at 4 °C and 25 °C. In vitro digestion assays confirmed the digestibility of LCEO-NE. Furthermore, evaluation of the DPPH, ABTS, and antimicrobial activities revealed that LCEO-NE displayed superior bacteriostatic and antioxidant properties compared to LCEO. Scanning electron microscopy elucidated that its bacteriostatic effect involved the disruption of bacterial microstructure. Hemocompatibility and cytotoxicity assays demonstrated the safety of LCEO-NE within the effective concentration range. This research supports the utilization of nanoparticles for encapsulating LCEO, thereby enhancing its stability and bioactivity, and consequently expanding its applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCO) has a wide range of industrial uses. This study found that LCO has significant anti-TMV activity and that its active components are monoterpenoids. Citral , the main active component of the oil, showed outstanding anti-TMV activity. The protective, inactive, and curative efficacies of citral (500 μg/mL) against TMV were 76.27%, 55.14%, and 50.42%, respectively, which were significantly better than those of the positive control agent, chitosan oligosaccharide . Citral showed no direct effect on TMV particles but did induce hypersensitive response (HR). Bioassay results showed that citral induced significant plant disease resistance activity (68.20% at a concentration of 500 μg/mL). The results of physiological and biochemical experiments showed that citral induced the overexpression of defense enzymes such as SOD , CAT , POD , and PAL in tobacco (which increased by 5.3, 1.9, 3.0, and 4.0 times at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively) as well as induced the overexpression of PR proteins, including NPR1 , PR1 , PR2 , and PR5 (which increased by 23.49, 39.27, 34.47, and 52.07 times at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively). These results suggest that citral could induce systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in tobacco. Further mechanism studies conducted suggest that citral induces the overexpression of genes related to salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis, including PAL , ICS , and PBS3 (50.74, 30.41, and 31.95 times higher than the control at a concentration of 500 μg/mL, respectively) and the accumulation of SA (5.1 times higher than the control at a concentration of 500 μg/mL). These results suggest that citral activates SAR through the SA pathway. The control efficacies induced by citral (500 μg/mL) on Erysiphe cucurbitacearum , Botrytis cinerea , and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum reached 67.39%, 59.61%, and 63.81%, respectively, indicating that citral can induce plant resistance against fungal diseases. The induced plant disease resistance activity of citral is prominent, with a long duration and a broad spectrum, performing better than the commercial agent chitosan oligosaccharide. Citral thus has the potential to be developed into a new botanical-derived anti-virus agent and plant immunity activator.

Lignin is an important component of plants, and its utilization is essential for biorefinery. Litsea cubeba fruit residues (LSRs) are abundant renewable lignin-rich bioresource with enormous potential for producing value-added monophenols. Herein, the lignin from LFRs was isolated with organic solvent, which was characterized by two-dimensional HSQC-NMR, FT-IR, Py-GCMS and GPC. The results indicate that the lignin in LFRs is mainly composed of guaiacyl (G) subunits (93 %), with small amounts of syringyl (S)/ p -hydroxyphenyl (H) structural subunits. The reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) of LFRs was investigated using methanol (MeOH) as the solvent and a commercial Pd/C (5 wt% Pd) catalyst. Two major phenolic compounds, 4- n -propylguaiacol and 4- n -propanolguaiacol derived from β-O-4 structure, were generated with high yield (19.4 wt%). This result was different from G-type pine wood powder, where 4- n -propanolguaiacol was the main product with a selectivity of 93.8 %. Besides, the influences about several important reaction parameters like time, temperature, solvent, H 2 pressure, and catalyst stability were also investigated based on monophenol yields and average molecular weight. Overall, the lignin components of Litsea cubeba fruit residues were identified and transformed into high functional phenolic chemicals in this work.
