Oil spillages and industrial discharge of oily water have caused severe damage to global environment. Currently a great many of oil-absorbing materials including graphene aerogels, superhydrophobic cellulose aerogels and polymer foams have been developed to effectively separate oil and water. However, most of the absorbing materials show limitations in separation of high-viscosity oils because the diffusion speed of high-viscosity oils into the porous materials is very slow at room temperature. In this article, a novel oil/water separation material was fabricated from rock wool superhydrophobically modified by PDMS/SiO 2 nanoparticle treatment. The modified rock wool could circularly absorb spilled oil and reload after combustion or squeezing. Most importantly, the modified rock wool worked well in continuously collecting high-viscosity oil with the aid of electric heating due to its excellent heat resistance. Because the rock wools have been industrially produced in large scale with very low prices and they are degradable naturally, this kind of spilled oil treatment was demonstrated to be a low-cost and environment-friendly method for the high-viscosity oil separation.

A novel nanocomposite, named as ARWZ, was fabricated using zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticles supported by acid-modified waste rock wool (ARW). ARW displayed a porous rod-like structure and could load plenty of ZVI nanoparticles. Meanwhile, ARW could effectively inhibit the aggregation and oxidation of ZVI nanoparticles because of steric-hindrance effect. ARWZ exhibited a large specific surface area and high removal capacity (197.69 mg/g) in 30 min for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from water and soil through adsorption and reduction, and the resulting ARWZ-Cr could be easily collected under a magnetic field because of the superior magnetic property. Importantly, when ARWZ was loaded in filter cotton with a micro/nano networks structure, the resulting system could be conveniently used as an excellent filter layer to control the migration of Cr(VI). This work provides a low cost and promising approach to remove Cr(VI), which also promotes the reuse of waste rock wool.

Rock wool, as an external wall insulation material, is crucial in improving the energy efficiency of structures. However, a large amount of rock wool furnace slag (RWFS) generated during the production of rock wool panels manufacturing causes environmental problems. To address these issues, this study focuses on the use of waste RWFS as a precursor in alkali-activated cementitious materials. In addition, the effect of anatase nano-TiO 2 (ANT) and rutile nano-TiO 2 (RNT) as an additive to the alkali-activated rock wool furnace slag cementitious materials (AARWFSCMs) was evaluated and quantified. Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM), Isothermal Conduction Calorimetry (ICC), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were used to identify the effects of modulus 1.0–1.8 water glass modulus (Ms; SiO 2 /Na 2 O), 3%–7% Na 2 O content on AARWFSCMs. Experimental tests was conducted to quantify the properties such as the setting time, the fluidity, the compressive strength of AARWFSCMs after hardening. Results found that the optimal content of Ms, Na 2 O content in preparing AARWFSCM were 1.4, 5 % for obtaining 28-d compressive strength of 96.36 MPa. The atomic percentage of Ca/Si of the hydration products in the AARWFSCMs fluctuated within 0.94–1.50. The hydration products were a mixture of C–S–H and C–A–S–H. Moreover, the experimental results illustrated that the nano-TiO 2 , which highly beneficial in improving the compressive strength of AARWFSCMs. The additions of 0.50 % ANT and 0.75 % RNT resulted in increments of 5.9 % and 12.8 % in the 28-d compressive strength of AARWFSCMs, respectively. The obtained results provide a new method of utilization of RWFS and improving the sustainability of the construction industry.

As a passive solar design technology, the Trombe wall can improve buildings’ energy efficiency and thermal comfort. However, the traditional Trombe wall heating efficiency is low and cannot meet the needs of continuous night heating of the building. To solve these problems, a new type of sheet-like composite adsorbent is proposed in this study, prepared from calcium chloride supported by a rock wool board, a high-porosity building material. The high adaptability of rock wool board to the building wall makes it possible for the composite adsorbent to be directly applied to the Trombe wall. The results show that the macroporous structure of the rock wool board provides a wealth of space for loading hydrated salts. The smaller the density and thickness, the more calcium chloride the rock wool board can carry, speeding up the absorption/deportation process. The rock wool slab-based calcium chloride composite adsorbent has a maximum adsorption capacity of 51% and a heat storage density of about 838 J/g. Achieving the desorbed balance within 8 h and applying it to the Trombe wall is expected to attain continuous heating of buildings and has significant potential in building energy conservation.

The development of superlyophobic materials in liquid systems, enabling synchronous oil/water separation and dye removal from water, is highly desirable. In this study, we employed a novel superwetting array-like BiOBr nanosheets anchored on waste rock wool (RW) fibers through a simple neutralization alcoholysis method. The resulting BiOBr/RW fibers exhibited superoleophilic and superhydrophilic properties in air but demonstrated underwater superoleophobic and underoil superhydrophobic characteristics. Utilizing its dual superlyophobicity, the fiber layer demonstrated high separation efficiencies and flux velocity for oil/water mixtures by prewetting under a gravity-driven mechanism. Additionally, the novel BiOBr/RW fibers also exhibited excellent dual superlyophobicity and effective separation for immiscible oil/oil systems. Furthermore, the BiOBr/RW fibers could serve as a filter to continuously separate oil/water mixtures with high flux velocity and removal rates (>93.9%) for water-soluble dye rhodamine B (RhB) simultaneously by directly activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in cyclic experiments. More importantly, the mechanism of simultaneous oil/water separation and RhB degradation was proposed based on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. Considering the simple modified process and the waste RW as raw material, this work may open up innovative, economical, and environmentally friendly avenues for the effective treatment of wastewater contaminated with oil and water-soluble pollutants.

An advanced oxidation process was developed under LED blue light (BL) photocatalysis in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) for effective degradation of tetracycline (TC) from contaminated water . Waste rock wool (RW) fibers modified with BiOBr nano-sheet (BiOBr/RW) using impregnation combined with hydrolysis process, was employed to activate APS to produce reactive radicals under LED BL irradiation (BiOBr/RW+APS+BL system). The influence factors on TC degradation were investigated. Besides, the radical scavengers such as methanol (MA), phenol (PN), tertbutanoland (TBA) and ethylene diamine tetraacetate (EDTA-2Na) combined electron spin paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were used to confirm the reactive radical species. The developed BiOBr/RW+APS+BL system exhibited much higher TC removal efficiency compared with other reported oxidation systems. In addition, the BiOBr/RW could directly activate the APS leading to degrade TC in the darkness. A maximum TC removal of 84.3% was achieved under the optimal conditions such as initial concentration of APS 100 mg/L, BiOBr/RW dosage 0.1 g/L and pH 7 in 80 min. Results also ascertained that h + , •OH and •SO 4 - over surface of the BiOBr/RW were the primary active chemical species in the BiOBr/RW+APS+BL system. It was found that the •OH and •SO 4 - in solution play critical roles for degradation of TC on the BiOBr/RW+APS system in dark. Finally, the repeated experiments indicated the excellent stability, photocatalytic ability and cycling property of BiOBr/RW.

This study investigated the combined effects of rockwool, a novel seedling substrate, and tricyclazole (TCA) on the bioavailability of TCA to Eisenia fetida . The single addition of rockwool and TCA alone to the soil inhibited the growth of E. fetida . A high concentration (300 mg·L −1 ) of TCA significantly decreased the biomass of E. fetida . The addition of 20-mesh rockwool reduced this effect on earthworm biomass by decreasing the soil TCA through adsorption, effectively mitigating TCA bioaccumulation in earthworms. A mechanistic analysis showed that the Mg–O functional group on the rockwool surface combined with the C C functional group in TCA to generate Mg–O–C, and the adsorption process was dominated by chemisorption. Toxicology experiments demonstrated that malondialdehyde and cellulase could be used as biomarkers of inhibitory effects of combined rockwool and TCA in soil on E. fetida . Macrogenomic analyses revealed that small particle sizes and high concentrations of rockwool caused co-stress effects on earthworms when TCA was present. When the particle size of rockwool increased, the toxic effect of TCA on earthworms instead decreased at higher rockwool concentrations. Therefore, in practical agricultural production, the particle size of rockwool can be controlled to realize the adsorption of TCA and reduce the toxic effects of TCA and rockwool on earthworms.
