Earth-abundant TiO 2 is a promising negative electrode for low-cost sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its high capacity, rapid (dis)charging capability, safe operation potential and nonflammability. Crystalline anatase TiO 2 is not suitable for reversible Na + (de)intercalation, but it displays pseudocapacitive response after repeated cycles. Herein, we find and demonstrate that ordered rocksalt (RS) NaTiO 2 nanograins are in situ formed by electrochemically cycling with Na + ions in anatase and amorphous TiO 2 . The in situ formed RS-NaTiO 2 follows a solid-solution reaction with small volume changes of only 2.0%, that determines the pseudocapacitive “mirror-like” cyclic voltammetry curve with a couple of broad redox peaks at 0.75 V vs. Na + /Na, a high capacity of 253 mAh g −1 , high-rate capability and thousands of stable cycles. The multistep crystalline-to-amorphous-to-RS transformations are able to be electrochemically activated during the aging process of assembled full cells. Our finding provides a direction for developing unconventional Ti-based high-performance active materials for SIBs with both high energy and power densities.

Na-ion layered oxides have attracted considerable interest due to their structural and electrochemical similarities to Li-ion counterparts, positioning them as promising cathode materials for sustainable energy storage. However, O3-type Na-ion layered oxides experience severe structural distortions and phase transitions during electrochemical cycling, which significantly deteriorate battery performance. In this study, an ultra-stable O3-type high-entropy doping cathode material is developed, NaNi 0.3 Mn 0.5 Fe 0.05 Li 0.05 Ti 0.05 Cu 0.05 O 2 (NMFLTC), for high-performance Na-ion battery. By partially substituted Ni of NaNi 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 2 (NM) with Fe, Li, Ti, and Cu, Na + diffusion and maintained the structural integrity of NMFLTC is successfully enhanced through the in situ formation of a high-entropy rock salt phase on the surface of the cathode material. This modification not only protects the cathode from structural degradation but also effectively mitigates phase transitions during cycling, leading to favored sodiation/de-sodiation electrochemistry and enhanced structure stability. Attributed to its structural superiorities, the high-entropy doping layered oxide cathode maintains 85.9% and 73.7% capacity retention at 0.1 C and 0.3 C after 200 and 600 cycles, respectively, which marks a significant improvement over traditional undoped NM cathodes. The proposed facile synthesis strategy enables the high entropy cathode material with possibility for large scale production, holding great promises to be utilized for practicalization.

The development of high-voltage cobalt-free spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) by conventional solid-state methods is hampered by its rapid capacity decay due to the impurity phases, inhomogeneous particle size, and dissolution of transition metals. To realize large-scale production and application of LNMO, a two-step modified solid-state method with Mn 2 O 3 nanosheets as a precursor is proposed here. The resulting material (P-LNMO) shows a reduced rock salt impurity phase and enhanced ionic transport through a more uniform control of particle size. As a result, the cycling stability of the disordered LNMO is remarkably improved, where LNMO half-cell capacity retention is 89.5 % at ambient temperature after 1000 cycles. What's more, the LNMO/Graphite full-cell is further assembled showing a discharge specific capacity of 110 mAh g −1 at 1C, and remains 97 % of its initial capacity after 100 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance indicates that this modified solid-state approach brings a new avenue to the synthesis of LNMO for the upcoming generation of commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Nickel-rich layered transition metal oxide is limited by the poor structural stability during cycling as cathode materials for next-generation lithium-based automotive batteries . In the past, the poor electrochemical performance was mainly attributed to cracks and formation of rock-salt phase on the particle surface at high potentials. Rarely is the effect of bulk phase structure evolution on properties discussed. Here, we report a bulk oxygen release induced dynamic accumulative electrochemical–mechanical coupling failure mechanism. Domain-like rock salt phases are generated due to the oxygen release and transition metals migration in the bulk region of LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622) particles at the first cycle high cutoff voltage. Then, reversible compressive/tensile lattice strain alternately dominate around the domain boundary and accumulate with cycling, leading to capacity fading and becoming the origin of intracrystalline cracks. The results suggest that, in addition to the side effects from the surface, the structural transformation of the bulk plays an important role in the capacity fading. The stabilization of lattice oxygen in bulk region is a feasible solution to suppress the structural transition and the inhomogeneous stress distribution.

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is a critical link in the global transition to new energy systems. Direct single-crystal regeneration has emerged as a key research direction for recycling of spent cathode materials, yet it faces inherent conflicts between high-temperature kinetics for single-crystal transformation and structural stability, and the dilemma of balancing particle fragmentation with crystal integrity. Herein, the study presents a strategy of targeted etching of heterogeneous phases and crystal-induced regrowth to achieve efficient single-crystal regeneration of spent cathode materials. In the molten salt-mediated system, the precise etching of the rock-salt phase via Cl − penetration induces local lattice distortion and stress accumulation, leading to the controlled and oriented cleavage of polycrystalline particles. Leveraging the strong ion migration effect, this process facilitates simultaneous relithiation and single-crystal regeneration. Owing to the restored morphological and structural integrity, the regenerated single-crystal cathode delivers a high initial discharge capacity of 183.60 mAh g −1 at 1C and an exceptional capacity retention of 93% after 100 cycles. Economic and environmental analysis further confirms the significant cost advantage of this strategy over conventional pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical recycling routes. This study provides an innovative solution for the direct regeneration of cathode materials in spent lithium-ion batteries.
