Polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDTs) are a class of compounds structurally similar to dioxins that possess various toxicological impacts on living organisms. Unfortunately, information on the levels of PCDTs in freshwater lakes in China is still scarce. In this work, the occurrence of 14 congeners of PCDTs in different matrices (i.e., sediment, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and water) of Chaohu Lake was investigated. It was determined that the concentrations of 14 PCDTs (Σ 14 PCDTs) in the sediment, SPM, and surface water were 0.40–3.55 ng g −1 (dry weight, d.w.), 0.38–2.95 ng·g −1 d.w., and 0.34–2.61 ng L −1 , respectively. The dominant congener found in sediments was 1,2,3,4,7-penta-CDT (19.54%), and 1,3,9-tri-CDT was the predominant congener in SPM (19.13%) and water (20.08%). Medium- and high-chlorinated PCDTs were detected as the major compounds in sediments and SPM. The low-chlorinated PCDTs (e.g., mono-CDTs) have higher relative percentages in the water than those detected in the sediment samples. The annual Σ 14 PCDT input of the eight main tributaries to Chaohu Lake was 19.90 kg. A strong linear correlation between the Σ 14 PCDT levels and the organic carbon (OC) content demonstrated that OC had an important influence on the PCDT redistribution in Chaohu Lake. In addition, the organic carbon normalized partitioning coefficient (log K OC ) of PCDTs in the SPM-water system in Chaohu Lake was 1.95–2.49 mL g −1 , and correlations between log K OC and other typical environment-related properties of PCDTs were established. This study provided useful data on the evaluation of ecological risks of PCDTs in Chaohu Lake.

Sediment samples were collected from the Chaohu Lake basin to investigate the spatial distribution and historical deposition behaviors of 17 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Concentrations of the total PFASs (∑PFASs) in limnetic sediments ranged from 0.719 to 2.429 ng/g dry weight (dw), with an average of 1.449 ng/g dw. A clear gradient in the spatial distribution was observed from west to east in surface sediments of Lake Chaohu. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid were predominant in limnetic sediments, with an average of 0.383 and 0.275 ng/g dw, respectively. The ∑PFASs concentrations in riverine sediments were the highest in the Shiwuli River, followed by the Nanfei River. PFASs in riverine sediments indicated that industrial discharge and urban runoff played key roles in PFAS distribution and pollution levels. In vertical profiles, concentrations of the ∑PFASs and PFAS congeners in three sediment cores generally increased with decreasing depths, indicating that the input history of the ∑PFASs could be attributed to the development of industrialization and urbanization in the Chaohu Lake basin. The correlations between PFASs and sedimentary characteristics, organic carbon, nutrients and inorganic salts suggested that both hydrophobic and electrostatic effects played important roles in PFAS distribution and pollution levels in sediments of Lake Chaohu.

Urban geoheritage sites are vulnerable to anthropogenic pressure linked to urbanisation. To understand the necessity of conservation of the geological heritage of the Chaohu Lake region of Hefei (China), the first assessment of the geological sites in the area was undertaken based on in-depth field studies and a literature review. The area possesses significant geoheritage of 16 types, the most important being stratigraphical and palaeontological. In the lake region, geoheritage is being destroyed by rapid and often uncontrolled (even illegal) urbanisation and a shortage of strategies for the popularisation of Earth sciences, as well as the weakness of practical strategies for geo-knowledge transfer and the unsustainable pursuit of economic benefits by government. Many important sites have been damaged and destroyed. Some aesthetic properties have also been lost, reducing the significance of these geological features for tourists, as well as students and researchers. Designation of an official protected zone and possible geopark creation could facilitate efficient conservation of the urban geoheritage of Hefei.

Chaohu Lake, a vital freshwater resource for surrounding communities, faces environmental stress due to industrial and mining activities, leading to metal contamination. However, the potential ecotoxicological effects of these metals remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed spatial metal distributions in the lake and developed a Drosophila model exposed to region-specific raw water samples. Our results revealed significantly elevated total metal levels in the western region compared to other areas. Male Drosophila exposed to western raw water exhibited >20% reduced climbing ability and reproductive deficits, suggesting metals as likely contributors to these adverse effects. Notably, the primary characteristics of the observed reproductive dysfunction included a >20% reduction in motor activity and a more than twofold increase in brain aging in offspring following paternal exposure to western water. Comparative analysis with China’s surface water standards identified barium (Ba), molybdenum (Mo), and cadmium (Cd) as key metals in the western region. Crucially, paternal exposure to these metals alone recapitulated the offspring’s motor decline and brain aging. We conclude that Ba, Mo, and Cd may be the key metals responsible for Chaohu Lake water-induced paternal motor/reproductive dysfunction and impaired offspring motor performance, with brain senescence potentially mediating the offspring’s motor deficits.

Desertification and water body eutrophication are two severe environmental problems worldwide. To alleviate these two problems simultaneously, a new idea, introducing aquatic cyanobacteria (AC) from Lake Chaohu to the surface of the Tengger Desert to encourage the growth of biological soil crusts, was proposed. A network-structured nanocomposite (SXA) consisting of sodium polyacrylate (SP), xanthan gum (XG), and attapulgite (ATP) was also fabricated. The SXA showed high water-retention ability, viscosity, and biosafety and could provide a suitable microenvironment for AC and desert cyanobacteria (DC) growth. It was found that the combination of AC and SXA effectively increased sand nutrient levels, facilitating the growth of DC and biological soil crusts. Importantly, the resultant biological soil crusts maintained stability for at least 210 days and played a key role in stabilizing the sand surface. Therefore, this work provides a novel technology not only for desert immobilization but also for the utilization of aquatic blooms.
